    Thanks for the video. Bike looks very nice. I've never seen the down tube used for storage before. Great for lengthy rides where you need to carry more food, etc but also completely out of the way.

      Many thanks for good video and review. Was considering between SL5 and SL6. Since the SL6 was quite a bit more, the sales manager said, if you really want a great bike and willing to spend $1,000 more, get the SL5 and buy the AEOLUS Pro 3V carbon wheels. I ended up buying the SL5 and put on the AEOLUS Pro 3V with 28c Continental Gator Skin. The SL5 now weighs 2 lbs less just from changing the stock Affinity to the AEOLUS Pro 3V. Love the bike even more now. BTW, the AEOLUS Pro 3V has internal rim width of 25mm. This transformed the Gator skin 28c into a 31.5mm width tire, more confidence on the corners, no penalty in speed and gravel capable as well, It is a dream bike now. I went over board and put a 32c Gator Skin on it and it transformed the tire into a 35.5mm width. Still no penalty in speed, however, because it is a 32c tire, it weighs 130g more. I'm going to loose more belly fat to compensate for that...LOL

      Nat S. I’ll have a look at those wheels, thanks! I was leaning towards the Hunt Aero 30’s at 1370g myself, but it will be after the winter now. I’m just uploading my full review video as well. So hopefully that will help anyone interested in the bike.

    Congratulations on your new Domane SL5. It's the color I would pick. Beautiful bike.

    • @DarrenPhillips
      @DarrenPhillips  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The colour was why I chased this bike, trying to find it in stock, but the bike itself is awesome. It’s brilliant on the road and just steps up a level on gravel. I couldn’t be more pleased with it. The colour is also better in person than on camera 👌

      Mendip Cycling Vlogs Looking at the sizing for my height of 5’8” with an inseam of 30, it says I would need a size 52. Just curious, how tall are you if you don’t mind my asking since you have a 52. How well does it fit you? Thank you in advance.

    • @DarrenPhillips
      @DarrenPhillips  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I’m 5ft 6, and it fits me very well. My inside leg is 29” I have my saddle height at 70cm, and there is plenty of seat post left. If anything, with 100cm stem, it’s on the shorter reach side, even for me.

      Not sure if they just came out. My LBS owner had been riding the 25c on his Emonda SLR without any issues. So, I went with the 32c. Today’s ride of 40 miles on fresh chip and seal plus venturing onto far less traveled (not really maintained) country roads has me convinced I made the right tire choice. They’re going to give the Vitoria Rubino Pros on my Roubaix a run for their money.

    I couldn’t;t get hold of an SL5 anywhere last June in my size, but I found an SL4. After a lot of climbing, I became very jealous of the bigger cogs at the back and went for an 11-32 cassette. Not possible on Tiagra, so I went for 105. Front mech on the SL4 is already 105 and the crank is a very decent Praxis Alba X, so it was only a partial group upgrade. Still cost a healthy amount, but I’m much happier.

    • @DarrenPhillips
      @DarrenPhillips  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I love my 34 cassette on my SL5, it’ll be interesting switching back to my 28 on my Canyon, even if it is 3kg lighter. I will no doubt mention it in an upcoming vlog, a I’m itching to get the Canyon out in the sunny weather now it’s starting to get warmer.

    Thank you for your wonderful reviews of Trek Domane SL5 2021. After watching your detail reviews, I was finally able to decide between Giant Defy vs Trek Domane SL5.
    I purchased Trek Domani SL5 orange/gray last week. Drove 6 hour in the rain to pick it up from New Jersey.
    Interestingly there was only 1 SL5 in size 52/orange/grey color was available in a Trek dealer in the entire eastern sea board of the United States.
    I am so happy so say, your reviews are right on the spot. it is a well balanced, comfortable and wonderful bike for long rides.

    Hey Darren. Well done and congrats. Nicely shot, yes! Please forgive if this is asked/answered elsewhere, but would you mind giving your height, inseam, long or short in the torso, etc? Since these are, indeed, tough to track down, also here in NYC, doing as much personal assessment of what size to look for. I'm either a 52 or 54, and those are tough to find! Enjoy the ride! Cheers.

    • @DarrenPhillips
      @DarrenPhillips  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I am 5ft 6 with a 29 inch inseam. My saddle height is 70cm. I went with the 52cm as the inseam was better for me in the range specified on Treks size guide and I previously rode a BMC 51cm frame. The fit is perfect for me and I was easily able to adjust it to suit my stack and reach. I hope this helps.

    Thanks for the awesome vlog!
    I am considering Domane AL5 for my first road bike. It’s quite cheaper and the only noticable difference is carbon frame, right? Or should I think of investing more into SL5?
    Another thing, I see that you are 169cm tall and got 52 size. But Trek recommends 54 size bike from 168cm height. The issue on my side is that my local bike store only has 52 size. Would you recommend getting it for 170-171cm tall, with inseam at about 79cm?

    • @DarrenPhillips
      @DarrenPhillips  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      My inseam is only 74cm, so you might be better off with a 54cm frame, if that’s what they recommend. I personally think the bike is the perfect size for me, and I have my saddle height set at 69cm. It would really depend on your budget, there is a big difference in price and that’s mainly the carbon frame which is about 1kg lighter than the Aluminium frame. I’d always go carbon, but that’s just my choice.

    • @blackfrey7976
      @blackfrey7976 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I've just had some test ride on both 52 and 54cm frames, and with my 172,6cm and 79,5cm inseam the 54cm frame was just to large, and 52 cm fits just perfect! Far more control over the bike than on 54cm frame. And have you bought one already?

    I’ve just ordered an SL4 with tiagra. £450 cheaper than the SL5 which is not in stock anyway. I am tempted to upgrade the wheels and tyres right away. What is your verdict on the bontrager wheels and tyres? Are they decent enough despite the weight?

    • @DarrenPhillips
      @DarrenPhillips  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      So far so good with the wheels, they’ll be a very noticeable upgrade though, due to the weight and rolling resistance. I’m not going to be able to upgrade them for a while though. But the tyres are bulletproof, until today when even with a massive piece of flint in the tyre, they still went on for 20 miles before they started to deflate!

    Hi, I have my old bike since 2008 and i'm looking to get a brand new one and Domane is on the list of possible replacement bikes. My actual bike has 23mm tires. now 28-32mm tires seems to be the standard size for this kind of bikes. I also have an Hybid equipped with 32mm tire and it's a world of difference with my road bike. I am a bit scared that my "new bike" with 32mm tire would feel like my hybrid on the raod. what are your toughts about it ? Thank you ! Great video ! :)

    • @DarrenPhillips
      @DarrenPhillips  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I was sceptical too at first, but I don’t thinks it’s any slower, it’s just so much more comfortable. I think once I’ve gone tubeless and added some better tyres, it will make it feel faster again. I’m still the fastest downhill in the group, that comfort combined with the disc brakes, gives you so much more confidence on the bike. If it’s just the tyre size that’s stopping you, go for it. It’s not even one of my cons about the bike.

As I am 60 years young and retiring in 6 months I am looking to hopefully realy enjoy road riding and going on long rides. I am seriously thinking of paying the extra £950 to upgrade to the SL5 mainly for the IsoSpeed upgrades but not sure if a carbon frame slighly lighter bike with Isospped is worth it. You do mention the Isospeed being impressive is it really taht good and worth paying for?

    • @DarrenPhillips
      @DarrenPhillips  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The Isospeed is one of those things that you read in the spec and think it’s just a selling point that you’ll never notice, but it feels incredible, it really does. It just seems to dampen all the bumps in the road, making this the most comfortable bike I’ve ever ridden. It really stands out on the gravel though, as the bike just goes and eats up the ground with ease and comfort. If you can afford it, go for it. I cannot praise how good this bike is, it is one hell of bike! Whatever choose, let me know what you think? You may have seen in the Where’s Ollie video, he had a Trek Domane SL6 demo to test, and he was pretty much in agreement about the bike and it’s comfort, that he was going to buy it as well.

      @DarrenPhillips  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It’s definitely aero and endurance. The bike is definitely comfy and I am so impressed. The vlog coming out today at 5pm will show how good it is off road too. It’s not the lightest bike, but it flys downhill. The downtube storage is a great idea in principle, but getting the bits bag in and out is not as easy as they make it look in the promotional video. But it’s better than a saddle bag.

      Apurva Agnihotri The bike is amazingly comfortable, the isospeed suspension thing really works, it just absorbs all the bumps in the road and on gravel and makes it really smooth to ride. I’m doing 100km rides with no problems at all, but can’t see why it would change going further. The bike is awesome!

    • @DarrenPhillips
      @DarrenPhillips  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      To be honest, I also looked at the weight, the winter bike I replaced was 8.5kg, this is around 9.5kg. I haven’t noticed it whilst riding it though, it’s more aero, with no saddle bag due to the downtube storage, and intergrated cables etc. If anything the wheels are 2.1kg and something I will look to upgrade first, and the saddle is on the heavy side. I will probably put my Fizik Antares on it and save 200g alone. Don’t let the weight put you off basically, it is one hell of a bike! I love it and the 11-34 cassette just eats up all the hills, and I’m finding them easier than my 7kg Canyon that has an 11-28 cassette on it. I am 100% certain I bought the right bike, I am unbelievably happy with it.

    • @DarrenPhillips
      @DarrenPhillips  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I didn’t, as I needed a road bike to replace my winter bike. The Domane SL5 ticked all the boxes for me and had the bonus of being labelled an all road bike, which if you’ve seen our gravel ride vlog in the Quantocks, you’ll see it definitely is. Pete is sold on the Checkpoint though, due to its mounts and better suited for bike packing, which he is very keen to do. It all depends on what type of riding you want to do.

      @@DarrenPhillips I am really torn between the Checkpoint AL5 and this one. I am a fairly novice rider and not bothered about breaking records or being aero, but mainly want to be comfortable on rides where I can push myself to go further. Would you say this is a fairly relaxed geometry or more aggressive compared to a specific gravel bike like the Checkpoint? I've heard the Checkpoint is very capable on roads too if you're a mainly leisure cyclist like myself.

    • @DarrenPhillips
      @DarrenPhillips  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@sharonmc5192 The Domane is aimed at all day comfortable riding, so if that what you’re after, it sounds like the bike for you. The Checkpoint is cheaper and has more mounting options for backpacking, so is also capable of riding all day. @@DarrenPhillips Well this is my most expensive bike purchase ever, so I am wanting my choice to be the right one. I love the look of both. Obviously the Checkpoint is chunkier and more robust and has different features to the Domane. For me its the geometry that needs to feel right as I've alway had female specific bikes til now (as I have long legs and shorter torso). I was under the impression that gravel bikes are more relaxed/upright which is why i was initially swayed more in that direction, but nowdays there are even different ends of the gravel spectrum where some are more road capable as well. I guess thats why the Domane turned my head. Its the orange and grey combo I really like and I was surprised at its price point at only £700 more than the AL Checkpoint. For a carbon frame I thought that was pretty good. Really like your content style. Have subscribed! Thanks for replying 👍🏻

      Just a quick update. I changed the stock 32s with about 50 psi and put on a pair of Conti 5000s and tried them at 90psi. They were DEFINITELY much faster but also definitely not as conformable.
      I'm gonna play around with the PSI to try to find a balance in both areas.
      I still found it a lovely bike. Good on the hills, over the rough stuff and for a decent turn of speed. I look forward to your wheel comparison video👍🏼

      It’s that or try the “look what I won in a competition “ but I don’t think she’d fall for that one 😂

      @@DarrenPhillips I usually get away with half of the real price, I also won a pretty premium electric guitar in a "competition" once. ;-)
