  • We went to Italy to try out Trek's third-generation Domane. It's 27% more compliant and saves you 12W at 40km/h. Plus it has REALLY big tyres (for a road bike).

I love the storage space in the down tube. I have seen that on Specialized MTBs and always wanted that for my road bike. Safe storage, no ugly saddle bag and it frees up your jersey pockets. Why are not more manufacturers doing that?

Trek Domane vs. Specialized Roubaix Fight!
These are for the occasional gravel rider or the cyclist who prefers riding to and from the trail or fire road with a minimum of compromise. Trek has clearly spent its engineering resources at the rear of the bike, while Specialized focused at the front. I've sampled both, albeit the last generations. Both really work to remove high frequency "noise" on bad roads or light gravel but become overwhelmed by large hits. Expected. The effect is similar to running an extra 10mm wide tire with 30 to 40 lower psi without the increased rolling resistance or heft. My condensed opinion is the Trek has the advantage in seated climbs and sweeping turns while the Roubaix will do better on steeper, chattery descents while feathering the front brake. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but I prefer the silhouette of the Roubaix. I'll also add that while the Trek has done an admirable job of hiding away the guts of the Isospeed from casual view it appears all the exposed seams, fasteners, trap doors, and cable retention will inevitably require additional care and cleaning. Ultimately, I think Trek edges out a victory simply because of the increased tire clearance. I know for fact that the Roubaix will accommodate 38mm x 650b (42mm in front) and it would be interesting to see what the Domane can swallow for road plus adopters.

These top models usually focused on seem pointless. I can’t see many dropping 10k. I’m guessing most people are spending 1500 to 2500 or so. Need more vids on the bikes the masses buy. Thx.

What type of seat post do they use for the new Domane? I hate the seat mask type they have on the current Domane. It such a PITA to adjust the saddle. Also, love the storage. I thought that's a brilliant idea. I remember Spez ruby has that compartment, but I don't fit with Spez. Do they allow to buy Project One frame only? I love that lava paint, but I don't buy a full bike anymore.

What are the main advantages and disadvantages of those bikes? Or maybe you can recommend something else? Price is ok for me. Thanks in advance

One has to think that any new Checkpoint will be quite different; as this new Domane seems to do most of the things that does. Maybe any new Checkpoint will now allow for a choice of wheel sizes; 650 or 700 And maybe 1x will be available also??

Is the claim of 12 W at 40 km/hr based on wind tunnel data or CFD of the bare bike or a bike with a rider, water bottles, etc. on the bike in a wind tunnel or with CFD. Bare bike results could be irrelevant since things like water bottles and the rider are going to change the flow past the bike tremendously.

I would only use the bike to ride on the road. So those thick tires are a letdown for me. I now drive with 25 mm tires and possibly switch to 28 mm. I do not want wider tires because the rolling resistance increases. Can I mount 28 mm tires on the standard rims of the Domane SL?

    • @jphillips472

    • @jphillips472

We have 2 sl5. I live in an overly abundant area of massive hills and the sl5 is a great rider, up hills, and at 40mph going down. Thats well above the 40Kmh you hear about people often riding. Yes, the sl5 is amazing and unless you are racing pro, will be awesome in just about any race. And very comfortable.

This bike was really easy to assemble th-cam.com/users/postUgkxMesz3KOGEmwmvyKQfLfrRSUXLFzfVHZA and required very few adjustments out of the box. The wheels did not require any truing/adjustments. The frame had some small scratches, but nothing major.I did replace the seat though - the seat it came with was very uncomfortable. The tires need to be re-inflated every 4-5 days, but this appears to be quite common for the narrow 700x25 tires.Overall, in my opinion, this bike looks and rides like a much more expensive bike.

Great bike but again, they should be made here in the food ol USA and be a hell of a lot cheaper. Wowzers the average Joe who can get away with buying a bike to last him over 7 to 10 years is just north of $2.5k, really. I’ve been riding bikes since I was 10 years old and all my bikes last me 10 years. The improvements are fantastic but the cost is terrible. I’ll just have to wait and get a used one off eBay.

Confortable ? No. this bike is hard on slick tires, even with the isospeed.
Note that on Domane + series, when you do not use the battery for more than 15 minutes, you need to remove it to reset it and reinstall it, a stupid procedure that does not exist to other manufacturers. Then the removal of the battery is much harder (because the eject button is very hard to displace) than on a VTC like e.g. Cube Kathmandu.
Then not easy to climb steep roads (10-15% or more) with a so low couple, or you are muscled and trained.
