I’m a DIY’er, and I’ve used it a couple of times. Their premium line has a one-coat coverage guarantee, and it’s not hype. For my living room, I used two gallons, compared with four gallons of a cheaper brand earlier. So while it’s certainly more expensive per gallon, it cost me less in the long run. I didn’t spray it, I rolled & brushed, and I don’t think it runs any more than anything else. It’s fairly thick, so perhaps even less. For a contractor, they may have an interest in something else, from a cost containment and availability perspective. But for me, it just works.

I own multiple rental properties and Behr is always my friend. It does the job and is cheaper than other high end brands. If I am doing same paint color , I can get away with just one coat.

What every contractor wants to know is if the paint covers very well with coat and how expensive or cheap it is. I personally use Berh all the time just because it covers very well with one coat because it has paint and primer in one and the price is the Icing in the cake. I’ll use Berhs premium plus over Sherwin William Emerald even if it was free. What’s the different material price and cuts labor in half

Exactly. Basic business. I didn't start a paint company because I love it, I was just naturally good at it and start up costs are low so I quit my job and went all in to learn business hands on. Knowing your numbers when it comes to man hours is the most important thing. Also morale tends to drop if you're kickin ass at a house to find out it will take two coats instead of being almost done.

I painted a two story stucco exterior in Upland Pa with Behr masonry and stucco paint in Nov 2013 and I liked it very much. Rolled it on. I looked at the house recently and it still looks great. I've also done interiors with Behr paint and running was a problem. Especially with ceiling cut ins on walls.

The Premium Plus Ultra exterior was just rated overall score of 75 (Jan 2020) as #1 exterior by Consumer Reports. Ratings primarily based on appearance at 3-6-9 years. About $188 for 5 gallons of flat at Home Depot (exclusive). Their Premium Plus came in with a rating of 73 and is around $145 for 5 gallons.

Titanium dioxide is the white pigment in all paint that you see before its dyed. Its the key ingredient in primer and it's what covers stains and color on walls and ceilings. Take a look at the MSDS sheets of SW Duration paint and Behr Ultra Premium Plus. 10% more in Behr. You get way more coverage with much fewer coats needed. SW paint rolls nice because it doesn't have as much solids but sags horizontally. Behr is a bit more gloppy and will sometimes run vertically. Home owners will get more done for less with Behr. Pros can paint faster and get the job done earlier because it rolls and sprays better. That's your answer.

Tyson Harris I learned this the hard way by trying all the different paints. If you learn how to roll and spray behr you save a lot of time by covering everything one coat.

BEHR Marquee sags when brushing and rolling, forget back rolling over the sags as it peels the paint back off the wall. Spraying has better results. I am a paint contractor in South Florida with high humidity.

Here's my experience with Behr paints: I built my house 20 years ago - a pretty large, two-story home - and I used the top-rated Behr Paint of the day, in a range of colors throughout. It has held up unbelievably well! Hasn't faded, cleans easily. Now, recently, I wanted to touch up some places in my bathroom that had gotten dinged up. I still happened to have a can of that two-decade old paint in a can in my garage (which gets very hot and very cold). Opened it up and it was dried to a sludge. I got some water and stirred it to hydrate it. But it had debris in it that was unstrainable. So, I got me a small pieced of wood and got the cleanest portion I could find - which was very watery and thin, and kept I kept painting it onto a piece of wood, intermittently drying it with a dryer, and doing multiple layers until I had a solid color. Took that small sample to Home Depot, they scanned it and it perfectly matched my 20-year-old paint on the wall - saving me an entire paint job, as the rest on the wall looks very good. I'm sold on Behr paint! And as Behr has remained a top-rated brand, and as the chemistry behind paints has greatly improved over the last 20 years, I can only imagine how good Behr paints are now!

      1. First reason I prefer Bher. A) Recently visited Sherwin-Williams store and purchased three quarts of three different colors of Latitude acrylic paint $50.00. (They won't sell you anything smaller than a quart😩) for my stucco home painting project after the Sherwin-Williams representative told me the A-100 (100 percent acrylic paint) that I came there to purchase was "a cheap paint that won't have a good result at $45 a gallon!" (On sale for $38)☹️🤔
( Then why do they sell it?) The representative told me to use their $70 per gallon interior exterior paint for my stucco home project! (which is also not made for rough stucco exteriors or hairline cracks and is not 100 percent acrylic nor is it a specialty masonry stucco waterproofing paint). Those were the two choices that I had in mind. A high build masonry waterproofing paint and a 100% acrylic paint for my stucco.🤔
      B) I asked them if they have a high build thick waterproofing paint for masonry and stucco that would compare with the Bher Specialty high build waterproofing paint for masonry and stucco with hairline cracks? They said no, there is no Sherwin-Williams paint that is designed to help stucco with hairline cracks.😡 They told me to use a $50 per gallon primer underneath the $70 per gallon interior exterior paint. 😠They also do not have any paint that includes a primer although I do believe that that is just a selling gimmick. 🤔
      C) Went to Home Depot purchased five small jars (5 colors ) of Behr Ultra premium paint for $23.👍😁 (First reason I prefer Bher. ) Also found their Bher Specialty Elastomeric high build waterproofing paint for Masonry and stucco which is supposed to work well on stucco with hairline cracks etc!😁
      C) Next I watched Sherwin-Williams videos related to waterproof coatings used by a builder on commercial high-rises in Daytona Beach Florida! This is what I learned. A)after significant concrete stucco repair. The Sherwin-Williams expert on the project had the contractor use LEXON conditioner on top of all existing surfaces and SW MODAC smooth primer after all areas of the stucco repairs with high PH and finish all those surfaces with SW Super paint satin finish ACRYLIC on everything. ( I knew I was right) They also used SW surecrete flexible waterproofing for the concrete balconies after a cathodic system was used by the builder ( cathodes are placed in the concrete where rusting rebar is a problem, it's known to slow down the breakdown of rebar in concrete especially on oceanfront property. It's a real problem here in Florida with waterfront or oceanfront properties.)
      D) the Sherwin-Williams store employees made me feel like I didn't know what I was talking about when in fact I did know exactly what I was needing and looking for to do my project and I was willing to purchase the best product for the job. Just because something is $70 or more per gallon doesn't mean it's the right product for the job! If the Sherwin-Williams employees don't know how to help me get what I want and need they should have shut up and stopped wasting my time rather than try to sell me some high-end paint for no apparent reason. And that's why I prefer Bher! 😁 A) My time has value B) they should have just shut up and given me the 100% acrylic paint samples which by the way is on sale at Sherwin-Williams right now. D) I contacted another Sherwin-Williams store. I got another moron on the phone. I called back an hour later and got a great knowledgeable guy who explained. You can't get super paint anymore. But they do have the LOXON XP waterproofing paint that I discovered watching videos by pros like you on TH-cam. 💕They have it in a flat they don't have the satin in stock but they can get it. They also don't have some of the other products that I listed above from the SW Daytona project video like Super paint. They can't get it anymore. They do have some surecrete products. He shared with me they haven't been able to get multiple products for many many months not necessarily related to covid and now because of supply chain issues they have no idea when they will be able to get some of those items. So, it's either SW LOXON XP waterproofing paint as my first coat and A-100 acrylic as my second coat unless someone advises me otherwise. Or the masonry specialty paint from Bher as my first coat and 100% acrylic paint from Bher as my second. However I'm still PO'd at the rotten customer service I received at Sherwin-Williams near my home in Sebastian Florida. Because I actually am not a paint expert and that's all they do is sell paint. I'm seriously wondering if I can't just color the masonry waterproofing paint in a satin and call it a day? Anyway home Depot makes it easier for people like me. Thank God for guys like you put so much of their knowledge online for others in their trade as well as for homeowners like me. Thank you for your valuable time and your expertise 🥰💕. I'm just really concerned about getting the right products. The painting contractor I am planning on using doesn't give any advice. Other than he prefer Sherwin-Williams. I'm worried about fading since I've seen a lot of houses fade in my area and also they don't fade evenly. I'm worried about some chalky spots on the front of my house which only occurred after someone pressure cleaned with chlorine. There's no Chalky residue anywhere else but in front. It wasn't there before the guy pressure washed the front of my house and my garage. Now my garage door and the front of my house is chalky. I'd really appreciate your opinion and so far as what should I put on top of the waterproofing paint or should I just color the waterproofing paint and use two coats of it? Or would that be a mistake because the paint is so thick? 😭 Anyway. It would be so nice if the painter made these decisions or helped me make these decisions and more fun if all I had to worry about was the colors 😁

I have painted my own houses for 35 years now so interesting your point about contractor vs DIYer. Behr does market to DIYers and prices are not cheap but manageable. Paint stores like SW and PPG will charge a DIYer full price (with some sales here and there but who can time that.....) So due to small quantities I get charged $10/gal more, paint stores cater to pros first for obvious reasons. So only high vol. contractors such as yourself enjoy the privilege of wholesale/volume discounts. So makes sense DIYers are going to end up buying Behr but over the years all paint has gotten so much better and I just finished spraying 10 gallons Ultra satin on my exterior, very nice to spray, had some runs with the brush!! May have to try SW next project though thanks for the vlog I learn something new every time I watch.

I’m not sure how old this video is but i would like to see you look back at this job in 2-3 years. I used Behr on a complete exterior paint job. After a few years the paint showed a chalky film coat. Had to clean entire service with a pressure wash and then clean with denatured alcohol. Sprayed Sherwin Williams Super Paint, looks great three years later.

Due to our climate I pressure washed and looks brand new...the only part that had to be sanded and painted were the eaves. My painter never complained about this paint. He prefers Benjamin Moore.

The Big Box DOES give discounts to contractors and painters. It’s called ProXtra, and you can get up to a20% discount on Behr and Kilz. They will also do free next day delivery to your job site when you order 24 gallons or more. They also store your color information you use for each job. If you like SW ProMar, then you might want to try the Behr Pro line. Consistently out performs ProMar and with ProXtra discount it’s less expensive as well.

I used Behr Ultra satin on my homes exterior ( Tucson AZ ) 17yrs ago, and it’s still looks like new and has retained its color very well.
Just painted the full interior - primered all walls white - then applied Sherwin Williams Emerald - every single color required 2 coats. Behr has always covered in 1 coat.

I used Bear paint for many years. I thought it was great. Then I tried a good paint like Benjamin More or Sherwin Williams. There's no comparison.
I've seen Bear paint that was so thick you could stand a five-gallon stir stick in a one-gallon can and it would stand straight up. My helper asked me if it was spoiled when he opened the can. It was close to as thick as pudding.
I find the trim paints, (semi-gloss or gloss) needs to be thinned a bit or it leaves brush lines down to the old paint. So you then must paint it again to cover.
I personally use Benjamin More Paints. For trim, doors, handrails, and shelves. I only use Benjamin More Advance Interior Waterborne paint. I love that stuff. It's alkyd like oil paint but cleans up with water. There's no blocking and it looks hard like oil paints when dried. without the yellowing!
It goes on a bit more like oils. You can't just slap it on thick like latex paints, or it will run or sag as oil does.
There's a sixteen-hour recoat time, but I think it's worth it. You can see the difference when it dries. I tend to work alone most of the time so I can usually only get one coat on the trim in a day anyway.

The reason why it runs is because it has high amounts of titanium dioxide, which is a heavy content, that's why it covers so well. It's also the most expensive part of any paint. For those that don't know, titanium dioxide is the replacement of lead paint. I use to get runs as well but I have mastered cutting, rolling, and spraying with this paint. No drips, no skips, no sags. I roll and cut in heavy, you have to be one with the paint ;) lol

Use Marquee, it's excellent, hands down their flat interior paint is worth the money and it helps if you have a %20 pro discount, ($34/gallon flat). I've used their Marquee flat/matte paint and love it because it is has great coverage, is easy to clean, durable and a great value. Marquee does smell though and it is the only drawback and some home owners just can't deal with it. The biggest issue I have with HD is that they only deliver on very large orders, something like 50+ gallons ? Their paint department is clueless and rarely do you find someone who knows what their talking about. They just don't carry a good selection of items for painting and they run out of things all the time because they don't stock for a commercial painter. I simply call my SW store and the same day or next day I have my paint and supplies either delivered to my job site or my home. The pricing is just slightly more expensive than HD but the convenience and time savings that my SW store provides me can't be measured.

That's because of the rheology modifiers Behr uses. It not necessarily a sign of good paint. They focus on the DIY end user versus contractors who know how to work with a variety of finishes. Some of the most garbage paint doesn't run. You could put a paint stick in it and it wouldn't fall over.
Behr isn't bad, it's just not formulated regionally, like SW, Rodda, KM, DE, Vista, etc. You can get a equal or better product for less from the wholesale paint suppliers if you negotiate with a rep and use a decent amount of paint. I was a rep for KM and eventually sold ICI products against Behr in Home Centers.

I called in thinking I was only filing a complaint, and they sent me TWO new gallons to repair it... that's like $100 of replaced paint. No hassle, nothing, I didnt even have to ask. Behr paint has changed its chemistry over the years. pros: it covers good. It's not as pungent as it used to be. The Marquee brand is worth EVERY penny & truly covers with 1 coat. very little to no holiday on 1 coat. The hi-glossbis very durable and finishes nice. The ceiling paint thick and bright. It really covers well with a bright true white. 11 years ago I did not like Behr paint at all.
cons: if u leave it in a paint pan it develops a skin. The brushing capabilities for cutting or trimming is tough though. I tend to mix a little water when brushing baseboards.

We used behr ultra recently on a job. I had never used it but another hand on the job said this is all he used on his other jobs and had high compliments for it. I noticed I had to find that magical place where I didn’t load my brush too much and almost dry brush it in the end because it ran so much. I ended up following behind the hands paint areas also cleaning up his runs. It does seem like it would be great for spraying but you can’t just slap it around.

BEHR is very runny , as a professional painter I say it sucks . I've been called to homes many various times to fix a mess from a homeowner . Often a homeowner will roll out a room and say wow it looks great to return to look at it in an hour to find out the paint sagged . Sucks because you can't really sand fresh paint , I usually just skim coat over it with joint compound to fix it .

I applied two coats of Behr Ceiling White Flat paint in a
    kitchen/dining room/living room (all one room - 45'x35') and had a very
difficult time hiding roller marks using a Wooster 3/8" nap polyester
roller cover and dipping straight out of a clean 5 gallon bucket with a
roller screen. It was like I was using an "eggshell" sheen. After
reading numerous complaints online about others having the same issues, I
switched to their i300 line of Dead Flat white. I re-rolled the
kitchen/dining room area one evening, and came back the next to roll the
living room. There is a definite difference between the two areas.
Kitchen/ dining was more creamy white, and the living room was a bluer
white. I thought maybe different drying temperatures. I bought another 5
gallon pail to re-roll the whole area in one shot and still have
issues. When did "flat" paint become "not flat" paint? When Behr says
"superior touch-up" and uniformity, I say BS. As soon as you would try
and do a touch up, you'd see it. This stuff does not blend and is NOT
flat. FYI~ General contractor for over 35 years, so yes, I've painted before.

I'm not a big fan of behr and only use it by request, but if you look at CR's criteria (Hiding, surface smoothness, Gloss change after scrubbing, staining, cleanability, mildew resistance, fade resistance). Those are mostly "in service" characteristics. If they were to weigh those factors against ease of application it would probably end up lower on the list. In my experience it runs too much and tends to contract around surface imperfections rather than flowing over them so the end result is less than ideal, especially on any trim. That said I can't question it's durability because I've never done such tests myself, and if that is the customers top priority it seems like a top choice.

  • @GilBatesLovesyou

I think Behr's exterior paint was pretty OK (last used in 2015) rolled and brushed smooth. The biggest problem I see with it from a DIY vs pro painter perspective (the exterior was less bad in this way, but the interior was really bad...) is basically it doesn't level out well at all, and roller/brush marks just stay there because it's made to dry quick, and be "easy to apply" by poking paint/using a cheapo brush, so it sacrifices the ability to level for that. The interior ultra I remember approx 2012 being good as a beginner painter, but then I used some again in 2015 and it was just absolutely horrendous, and I think it was a formula change, and even the Behr shill Jack Pauhl admitted to a formula change and stopped using it around then, too. Premium Plus I used about the same time frame was OK and oddly better than the Ultra, and basically handled similar to Promar 200, etc.

Oh, one Behr paint I do like as an exception is actually Behr alkyd, though. There's obviously better stuff on the market, but it's not bad at all. It levels super well, and dries hard on primed surfaces. Just it has an 8-12 hour dry time. But for what it is, it's not bad at all, especially for $35 at HD. Just adhesion is only acceptable, not great, as in, it still won't go over poly/varnish with no primer, but again, for what it is, not bad at all.

try benmoore ultra spec 500. a lot better paint, and has color lock tech, meaning if you have a bright red, it will not turn pink when the sun bleaches out the color.

ive been a painter for about 10 years now... i try to avoid behr at all costs :p its just not the same quality as a paint from a paint store, ben moore, sherwin williams, dulux.. some costumers really want behr or theyll buy the paint themselves and supply us with behr.. but for the most part we try avoiding it.. had an issue with their paint once too, bought 10 gallons and the paint wasn't sticking, luckily when we called them they actually refunded us on the 10 gallons, we only used 2.. 1 was giving us issues so we opened another to see if it was just mixed poorly.. but the 2nd one gave the same issues, it wouldnt cover and was runny and jsut a nightmare. and they refunded the 2 we opened and used as well.

Curious 3 years later how the paint job lasted. I live in an area HD is my only option for paint. Behr is the best they have. I want this to last at least 8 years on older wood siding with peeling. I called behr they told me i didn’t have to clean it but I chipped , sanded and I”m power washing today. They have a life time warranty so how bad can it be?

I just used 4 gallons of Behr. 2 of the Behr Ceiling paint and 2 of the Marquee. I have to say the Marquee does look good but it is not a one coat paint. You really need to have enough paint and roll it slowly in order to be one coat but it just doesn't seem like enough coverage over certain walls with one coat. The Marquee does seem thicker than other paints, it takes a little longer to dry too but for the price you pay for it's about the same price as Super Paint from SW which rolls better and have less splatter. As for the Behr ceiling paint, it is garbage. Way too much drips and splatters compared to SW Eminence which really rolls easily without drips. So I can't say Behr stuff is great, they are ok if you have a HD 10% coupon and get it cheap. You get what you paid for.

FYI....The Home Depot is the only company that sells Behr. Behr is exceptionally priced well...the top of the line Marquee retails for $42.....if you have an account you can get 10%, 15%, and 20% off of that. SW top of the line Emerald costs $75 retail..you will need a 45% discount to be in the same price range as Behr on the shelf. Consumer reports after doing 22 separate tests on all paints available in North America, has deemed Behr paints rated #1, #2, and #3...and Behr has had that standing going on 12 years now. Sherwin Williams doesn’t even fall in the top 10. The Home Depot and Behr both deliver paint. They have services in place at the paint counter as well as down at the pro desk to keep track of all jobs and colors used. There is not one thing a SW does that The Home Depot doesn’t do. Rollout the products next to each other and its a black and white difference. The tests that Consumer Reports does is consistent with all things that matter to both a diy’er and also a pro. Literally everything I just mentioned in this comment is verifiable, recorded, and factual. No opinions.....you have to test it, not just take someone’s word for it.

you are comparing apples to peanuts, benjamin moore ultra spex exterior and interior is the same price as the marquee but a much better paint, you comparing their top line to their middle line in pricing,,and consumer reports are not real reports, so you can not go by them, ask people who have painted for years and the real quality

and there is no pro at home depot at paint dept, they took a 2 hour course now they are experts in paint, i played stupid one day, asked them i was painting my kitchen cabinets that had oil varvish, they told me i didnt need to prime and just paint them with there primer in one paint, which will not stick, so i said ohh primer and paint, i replaced all the sheerock there as well so i do not need to prime, they said no i didnt need to prime, because their paint have primer in it,,,,again will bubble and not adhere to new drywall and crack fill..

Rodney Monk I work at a Home Depot paint desk full time. SW contractors come in all the time to buy Behr because Behr is as good and better than SW and priced at less than half the cost

I use both but I will never ask a Home Depot paint department mixer for advice. Wolf, I had a girl tell me the same thing. You want an honest attempt getting a good color match and a person that can make the judgement call for color adjustments, go the Sherwin Williams. They've kept paint for a good half day or more tweaking it for me to get as close as humanly possible.
I use Marquee for interior walls unless I'm going for a "true" flat sheen. Marquee doesn't roll out too well and cut in is bit mucky but I try to work it quick. I use Super Paint on exteriors and Pro Classic for trim. I use e600 for clients with rentals that want to just dress it up. They both have their advantages, but I get annoyed by Behr representatives telling me how much better their paint is because of spec sheets, not mentioning the quality of the ingredients . I can't sit there and argue with someone that is telling me their spec sheet says it's better while my experience is wrong especially when they are ex painters with way less total years of experience.
Overall, Sherwin Williams ought to be flattered because Behr is constantly trying to compare themselves to them.
