It's my opinion that anyone getting painting tips from your videos is gaining real, useable information in both safety and painting techniques. Keep up the great work.

Really helpful guys. This is a good format to reveal important thing that pop into your minds off-script. Thanks!
    P. S. You can PROVE that there is no explosion risk by finding out what the Lower Explosive Limit of your solvent is (the lowest ratio with air that can explode) and then comparing the volume of the room with the amount of solvent in the cup. Worst case in your scenario, with his 25% thinning and 8 oz. product: if you threw the whole 2 oz of laquer thinner into the air in that space, it probably wouldn't reach the limit. Of course, I don't know the room size or the thinner's LEL, but it also doesn't include the fact that the fans are increasing the air volume wildly, that the inbound fan's sparking motor is in clean air, and that the outbound fan can only light thinner on the way out. So don't point it at the kid's sandbox and your golden. (It's just mentioned because it's a gas to do the actual calculation sometime for professional fun {pun intended}).
Great show! I learn a lot from you!

For the past 2 years I have been doing 3 to 4 kitchen cabinet jobs/month.
With inside hinges I never take off the doors anymore. I just mask off the whole kitchen and spray it all in place.
The time saving is incredible and I have never had a complaint about the hinges chipping or peeling.
More profit for me while at the same time I can charge my customers less.
Can complete the job in fewer days also. And I only use airless as well (although I don't use lacquer) since the
application is 4x faster at least. Never get complaints about the finish either.

I still use the latex products because it is less brittle, also people in Seattle see a painter and they are sick from the fumes even before we open the can. I used to use lacquer primer surfacer on all millwork and top coated with Kelly Moore Durapoxy. The Durapoxy had super impact resistance.

    • @dansummerhill7179
      @dansummerhill7179 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

yeah, solvent won't fly everywhere. I was cringing thinking about some of the places we work. We shut down ventilation systems before we go in. We were on a job in DC where the painters were using a oil based stain the the sub basement. The ventilation system carried the fumes through all 10 floors of the building. They evacuated. It was ugly.

Sometimes you sand. Sometimes you don’t. Depends on the quality of the cabinets. Depends what kind of wood. If you sand too much with cherry wood, it will bleed through. Do not use TSP. It leaves a residue. Use denatured alcohol. 2 coats of primer. 3 coats of paint,3-4Buff inbetween coats. First use a 240 sanding pad to get rid of the little bumps , then use a 500 grit sand pad to make it slick and smooth. I use general finishes paints. I have never tried anything else, although I’m about to venture out and try new paints.

This is a great video by pros for pros, learning about using lacquers. For the everyday homeowner looking to paint 1 set of their own cabinets and trying to learn how to, this is a decent video for ideas. But do not use lacquers, it is a while different league then regular paints.
Everyday homeowner (and many other painters not looking to use lacquers), would be fine using a primer like a couple coats of Zinsser Smart Prime for waterbased, or original BIN (smelly). For paints Sherwin Emerald Urethane, Ben Moore Waterbased Satin Impervo. If you have Kelly Moore or Dunn Edwards in your area they have good cab paints.

Nice video. Similar to automotive paint process. I use TSP to remove greasy residue and give the surface a 'tooth'. That cup gun system is cool. I'm guessing a bit pricy for DIY folks. A reduction gun HVLP sprayer is a nice (cheap) alternative to a full HVLP rig since you can use your existing compressor but you do have to keep the cup mostly upright. I think you can get these for about $90.

I wonder what John would think using some of the recently available water based alkyd enamels for doing cabinets. Sherwin and Benjamin Moore sell these special paints. I'm not sure when these became available. Back when I was doing high-gloss stuff I used Imron and automotive paint. In recent years, I've been using water based poly for covering solid wood (from General Finishes . varathane product is good too). Those are amazing and you can achieve beautiful high-gloss or satin finishes by brushing or using paint pads -- you would need to paint flat - one side at a time though. as usual it all boils down to prep.

Excellent commentary on the explosion hazard. As long as the fans are not ACME brand you should be OK.
More sensibly, they’re induction motors which don’t spark. Brushed universal motor power tools and brushed cordless tools might well be avoided though.

A few related questions based on the beadboard panels on the doors (and what's in my kitchen now)
    1) Do you apply any caulk or anything to the bottom edge of the panel where the beading meets the frame? I've had issues with the ones in my kitchen where some gunk has collected. Of course cleaner roommates would have helped here, too...
    2) The ones I have had MDF panels & also have water damage from either cleaning attempts and/or stains getting in. I don't think the paint used is very durable for wiping, anyway. How repairable are these where some swelling has occurred?
    3) If I'm able to repair/repaint these doors, will the laquer primer you use bond to the existing paint & the later coats smooth out the finish, or will a lot of sanding be required?
Thanks so much & keep up the great content! Gonna go check out more of these vids for masking & other cabinet techniques.

Question: Is that a 3M PPS system ? What is the adaptor I would need? I have the Titan 0524041 or 524041 Capspray Maxum II HVLP Spray Gun - So what I am trying to figure out after watching this video is , I use my gun just convert it over to the 3m PPS system? I just order this system off Amazon or get it at Sherwin Williams? THanks

Hi, I've seen a method that starts by coating a layer of paper maybe(I don't know exactly the name and details) and then going to lacquer. Is it a better way to have a better smooth and polished ending?
And do you know what is the name of that material in industrial cabinet painting?

Hi Chris. What is the brand name of the pre cut lacquer you use and where do you buy it? Also the same of the primer. What is the brand name and where do you buy it.

I'm looking to lacquer my cabinets but found they have a polyurethane top coat on them. What do you guys suggest I do to prep them? What products would you use to prime/paint?

Hey guys, great information. Do you use a clear coat over the pigmented lacquer? I am being told at Sherman Williams that it is necessary.

Great video. I like watching them. I have a question. What do you do for tiny cubby holes? I ALWAYS get blowback and more paint on my face than in the 6 x 6 cubby hole. Also in tight areas like between the hood and surrounding cabinets? Thanks

Low pressure blow back is just part of it

You talk about 2 prime coats followed by 2 clear coats. So where is your actual color? Is your primer colored or is your clear tinted to your desired color? I would have suspected a color coat over your primer & under your 2 top coats (clear)?

I always prime cabinets with white shellac. Your comment on this? Also you are exhausting paint out the door. Doesn't this get on stuff like sidewalks, cars or outdoor furniture?
