Tier Listing My ENTIRE Collection - 2022 Edition

- Which board games are the best? Which are the worst? How have opinions changed over a year? And which board games are gone? As usual, we got a ton of different tabletop genres and mechanics across this tier list. Tons of different complexity levels, time lengths, and gameplay types ranging from area control to euro, and even party games. And as a usual reminder, these are nothing but personal opinions, completely separate from the recommender scores in our Shelfside Reviews! After all, things like great 2 player or solo game nights aren't usually our cup of tea, but that doesn't mean those are bad board games!

wow, thank you for this! Pinned :)
No collection is complete without SPACE HULK. ; ) Seriously, great to see Daniel and Ashton back together again! ; )
Such a great, chill watch after work! Love the easy camaraderie between you guys and enjoyed the friendly debate & conversation.
It's 1130 pm, I'm saving this to watch later for tomorrow. Very excited!
Always fun to watch this change each year. Even more fun to watch your list of patrons grow!!!
thanks! Excited to see how far we'll get next year!!! Here's to more games and more TI4! -Ashton
I love watching the tier listing vids, they are so fun and the banter between you two is very interesting. i get the sense that i would love to come and chill with you guys (except you are like tens of thousands of km away lol)
LORD DANIEL surprise addition to a mega Tier List collection? This day will go glorious.
Trying to figure out what board game you guys were talking about around 9:04 (mentioned briefly) for a bit and can't figure it out 😢. Anyways, really fun to hear both yer opinions on a bunch of different board games, keep up the good work!
Aaah, sidereal confluence is the game that is mentioned next to Chinatown! Had to cut that tangent out to keep the runtime shorter. cheers! -Ashton
You guys are great, the high production quality and honest reviews really deserve more attention!
Thanks man! More vids headed your way :) -Ashton
Star Trek Ascendancy is one of my favourite games.
i really enjoy watching this and have been watching the last few years tier list
Love how you guys can be so different minded (Cards against Humanity in this vid, for example), then when you agree on a score it really lends credence to the quality of game you're ranking.
Happy to see you two together again
Your collection has grown. You now have an Ashton-of-games. Please don't have Dan-yell at me for the puns, I can't handle it - I am an S-Tear commenter.
oh gosh... you make me tier-y eyed -Ashton
Tiering boardgames is such a good idea, especially as the industry gets saturated with new releases. I won't be surprised if it outright replaces Top N lists. 👏👏👏
cheers! Curious to see if something will happen like that too, always enjoyed watching discussion of tier lists -Ashton
I wonder how Mosaic will fall in your group. I backed the Kickstarter hoping for a Civilization experience.
I have all of Eldritch Horror and I think you definitely should try to get your hands on the Cities in Ruin small-box expansion. It really amps everything to 11 :-) Other than that, you have Forsaken Lore which is considered the other must-have. The big boxes expansions are not as worthwhile IMHO, but if you're enjoying Under the Pyramids then that's cool.
thanks for sharing! We'll have to squeeze in more eldritch somewhere :) -Ashton
I love watching these kind of videos!
Can't wait to see what we come up with next year! -Ashton
Dude, I have and still love, Clue the Great Museum Caper.
if you only have the core Arkham Horror card game it can get predictable quickly. Like Civilization, the expansions are where the magic happens.
Next try Carnivale of Horrors. a stand alone scenario. Very difficult but it will demonstrate the flexibility of the system. The Dream Eaters cycle is very interesting. Two teams play four different, interconnected scenarios. One as the scientists monitoring the other team that descends into the Dream World. And of course what happens to one team affects the other team even though they are in a different scenarios.
And of course different investigators really make it more interesting. Try one or two of the separate investigator packs.
I agree, most of the problems that were raised about AH were specifically about the weakness of the base game and not getting the depth from that limited scope. Plus he compares it a lot of eldritch horror which they aren't the same style of game.
have you played pandemic rising tide? i dont like pandemic but i do like that one
Thanks for the video. Curious as to where you would have put Unfathomable
I'd put it around A tier, it's a game I was ok with at first but has begun growing on me, dunno bout Ashton lol
-Daniel
Movie dune definitely deserves some love
Red dragon in "who's it made for?" Me. It's made for me :)
Do you plan on keeping those really low tier games? I find game space is hard to find so anything less than a C gets given away.
i would love to see a POK updated review after this video! Also, where is blood rage? and in what tier would you put it in?
I actually got rid of blood rage, since I played it SO much and my group isn't too into it here. I would put it at a low B though! -Ashton
@Shelfside thanks for the answer! any particular reason to put in low B despite the high score the game got?
@@kaeltxwz The recommendation is still a 10/10 for sure! For my B, I actually think I wanted the game to being doing more for its length. After the draft is done, the pillaging mechanics didn't grip me that much over time. And I did get irritated at loki bahaha. -Ashton
You guys need to check out Unmatched. About as simple as possible but with complex strategies and every character is completely different. 30 minute playtimes are the usual.
Had this on my radar for while! Will have to bit the bullet and pick it up :) -Ashton
@@Shelfside Do check out Vorpal the software used to play Unmatched tournaments online. Expensive and you have to make your own content but it is REALLY simple. A video showed a guy scanning cards in real time and implementing them while playing an on line game. WOW!
@@robertthurman9866 sweet, thank you! -Ashton
War of the Ring is the greatest 2p game ever made. The end
Have you played Cthulhu DMD -- Lovecraft universe.. I wonder where you'd stack it next to Eldritch horror
I personally like dmd at around the same level, but I also don't have any expansion content so just base game, unlike Eldritch. I'd imagine that would change if I did pick up more content haha
-Daniel
where can I hear your thoughts about last word?
we actually unlisted it because a vid with low watchtime hurts the algorithm here. It's on our patreon only as of now :) -Ashton
You guys and I have practically identical tastes in board games. I'm surprised that you aren't into Puerto Rico as much as our group.
I played it once in high school and really liked it! Just never had a reason to buy for some reason. Think the theme is really dry for my buds. Cheers! -Ashton
I also own Fireball Island. It _is_ a kid's game.
Love your vids!
thank you! Can't wait to do this again next year :D -Ashton
Took a few days but watched this whole thing over lunches lol nice list. What game do u think has hardest learning curve but is most rewarding once understood?
Games that jump to my mind for this are Root and Gloomhaven, but I'm speaking for myself not Ashton (I'm going to guess he might say Gaia Project).
Also nice Vash prof pic lol
-Daniel
@@Shelfside Thanks lol Trigun my fav
Hell yeah love and peace all the way
-Daniel
YOU ARE BOTH AWESOME! ❤❤❤
Tigris & Euphrates is A tier. Yes it"s a bit abstract, but not more than Brass. And the strategy in this game is awesome, better than most other games.
Takenoko, played 3 times and found it boring.
Pretty sure Eclipse second dawn will be in your S tier based off seeing what you like so far!
Daniel certainly loves it! I'm not as warm on it, but still have to try the asymmetry! -Ashton
was waiting 1 year to see brass in S tear 😊
need to play it again! -Ashton
Highly agree with the rating you gave for CAH, it is the anti-thesis of its goal of being a "funny" game. Apples to apples is way more fun and hilarious because you actually have to be funny to make funny matches.
You can get SanGuoSha in English now as War of the Three Kingdoms by Yoka Games. Only the base game though
well dang. Gotta pick that one up -Ashton
I liked the look of puppetmaster, card game/board games are my fav
Would love to see a review of Last Word following that super high ranking !
We actually already did one but it's currently unlisted cause we don't want super low view vids hurting the algorithm unfortunately :(
-Daniel
@@Shelfside shieeet you guys should put it on the patreon if it isn't already
@@Shelfside that's a shame, it was your video that got me and the gf to buy the game and it's great!
@@crinklechips6950 Super awesome! Yeah the game is so fun, need to play it again :) -Ashton
Haha love how the f game got pushed off the table
For me Star Wars Rebellion was way more easy to teach and play than LotR.
We play Red Dragon Inn at every halloween party. We dress up like our characters, make special drinks for it and make it a real party. Its the only time of the year i play it, but i fukken love it.
Yoooo that's so cool!
-Daniel
Surprised how polar we are in our tier rankings
thanks for sharing! Always curious to see what's next for the collection here :) -Ashton
I disagree with so many of the takes here but a fun watch(T&E is borderline perfect to me for example). I really love watching these and the reviews cuz it gives a very clear view of your tastes and this continues that trend. Great work fellas.
Would love to see your folks take on Kemet and Cyclades, both dudes on a map games but both feature their themes and allow players to get up to some real cool stuff.
Cheers! Agree that TE is a rreally well made game, just not for me I suppose. We've played Kemet once, perhaps we can get a review out in the future! -Ashton
I personally love kemet lol
-Daniel
I didn't know that there is separate Android game! I only played Android: Netrunner and it's so good! The best card game ever!
Red dragon inn gets wayyyy better with the newer characters. S for me
waiting for top 2022 edition
username checks out. Will be dropped later this year! -Ashton
I'll take that Empires of the North off your hands lol
ahaha sure thing Mark :) -Ashton
Seeing Arkham Horror, Pandemic, Empires of the North in the D tier is what keeps me from subscribing. I mean I do respect your opinion, I just can't relate to it and therefore how can I interpret your reviews to my interests?
Totally understand. These are just my personal tastes, and in our reviews we definitely try to give an overall (Tentative/Recommender) and a personal score to keep things a little more grounded to you guys. I also hope to be playing more of Arkham Horror LCG in the future and seeing if the score goes up :) Kept that box prime and ready for the newer campaigns! -Ashton
Sad that you rated Empires of the North low. Great list nonetheless
I'll have to play it again someday, but definitely didn't grip me hard ona first impression, cheers! -Ashton
It's really not that good. You play cards and trigger them. Pretty standard engine builder with a weak rondel. I thought it was dull.
Catan deserves to be ranked higher.
oh no - chaos time is back with a vengeance
EDIT: bless daniel for bringing a sense of normalcy and organization
EDIT2: i'm gonna buy you the english version of sanguosha sometime LOL
I just searched for and failed finding a game I had sold.
DO NOT SELL YOUR BOARD GAMES.
Because the fomo is pretty real in this case.
dang. Yeah I'm only getting rid of stuff I'm REALLY sure about, and even to this day I have slight regrets on selling Chaos. Yet that simultaneously makes me really curious about finding a good replacement -Ashton
Your channel is s-tier!
how come u dont have Inis in your collection?!
never got to play it! One day :) -ashton
@@Shelfside That day is today! go to the store and inta buy it and place it in S-tier!
I liked Inis, but the friend who has it just never brings it out because we always just play Root lol
-Daniel
Yesses
Hero Quest is eternally S Tier.
will need to play it again one day :) -Ashton
Ashton likes PoK now? Need to update the PoK quick review -TH-cam watcher.
I've always liked Pok! Just need to another play to ensure its either 9/10 or 10/10 for me. -Ashton
Play terraforming mars!
Heck yea
heck ya!
So sad seeing Arkham Horror The Card Game at D... but its true, the core box only is only a taste of the system, like a demo. Hope you get one full cycle and become one of us one of us!
It's on the chopping block! -Ashton
Does Daniel and Ashton have seperate collections? I Know Daniel gave Root and Oath a 10/10 while Ashton gave those much lower so I figure that would be in there.
Also interesting to see how my old favorite do age a bit with time and as new board game designs come out. Still really like some originals but have to think more critically as new designs come out
We do have separate collections, which some slight overlap as we constantly just borrow each other's stuff. Like, the copy of Gaia Project here is technically Daniel's ahaha. Really interesting to see how my thoughts on TE have aged, since that game used to be in my top 10! -Ashton
isnt there a better firefly game? i recall one with a giant board and tiny spaceships? any one else remember this ?
Yeah I think that one is just called Firefly, something about gathering a crew and keep flying. Didn't ever get to play it, but heard it was a pick up and deliver sandbox-ish. cheers! -ashton
Yeah its just firefly. If you haven't seen the show/movie, its a good (if not long) pick up and deliver sandbox game. If you have seen the show, it really is an amazing game. So many games come down to the wire with players risking a rush through reaver territory to try and sneak a win. Its so fun.
I like The Resistance but Avalon is better. And since Quest came out I've been kind of drifting toward that
I'm surprised you STILL haven't gotten rid of your F tier games! You've had those for how many years now?
And root? :c
ahaha haven't played it in years. Guessing it wouldn't be too high for me :) -Ashton
Where the fuck is Gloomhaven? Where is Jaws of the Lion?
These are the games at Ashton's place lol, not my collection
-Daniel
Where is Blood Rage?
Alas, I happened to sell it off shortly after my video review, since it wasn't a game I wanted to own anymore (but still down to play when suggested)! -Ashton
@@Shelfside Where would you rate it if you still had it?
@@xxtardelixxable B tier! -Ashton
shoulda forced the groupings to a normal distribution
"There aren't many team games" followed by "I don't like coop games"? Coop games are team games!
He be going off intuitive thought lmao
But also, I think he wants more 2v2/3v3 games not pure co-op
-Daniel
Whats the guy doing with his hair all the time ?
Coup got a 1/10 from me on bgg :P what a bad game.
Good games for teens?
You guys are my fav board game reviewers but I wish Daniel doesn’t swear that often. I sometime listen to your videos while my kids are around and had to turn the vid off because of the swearing.
Jumanji? Really? 🤣
Once you begin... you have to finish... or something like that from robin williams ahaha -Ashton
Cards against humanity is just vulgar.
Glad to hear you weren't a fan.
Get a life guys. Putting 2 games in S tier that take 4-8 hours to play is ridiculous. Putting Arkham LCG in D tier is criminal. No Stonemeir games? C’mon
chill man
