      Not my Dad. We've never bonded over comedy. His focus was Blackjack.
      When I was really young, around 4 years old, he'd bring me to the tables, and the first thing I learned to read was a drinks menu.
      Don't get me wrong. You could say I bonded with Dad.
      I bonded him out of jail when he got busted stealing money from payphones on the Strip.
      I lost that bond, and the bond for his unit, when he slipped out across state lines.
      And when I finally turned 21 and married a stripper, he spent my wedding day on the phone to his bookie. Gave me 50 bucks as a wedding present the day before the wedding then took it back the day after.
      Yeah, some of us get dealt bad hands in life. And some of us watch comedy with our Dads.

    There are so many ways he forces a reaction from the crowd outside of just telling jokes it’s actually brilliant. The whole thing is a desperate attempt to get literally any kind of reaction. Names popular music artists, brands, etc just to get an applause. He doesn’t even care if it’s for him. Forces a marriage proposal just to hear the audience clap. • @Graemyr
      @Graemyr 4 ปีที่แล้ว +93

      I think it was less about alcoholism, and more about how he and his wife had settled into a genuinely enjoyable routine. They found pleasure in each other's company, shared meals and wine together, got through each monotonous day comforted by the prospect of being together at the end of it all. It's sentimental and beautiful, and a genuinely vulnerable moment. So naturally he has to shatter that moment by bragging about how shit-faced he got on the weekends. My interpretation was that "Tim" probably didn't actually get shit-faced all that often, but was forcing bravado and exaggerating his weekends to appeal to the audience when what he really enjoyed was the rhythm of his week and the time spent with his wife.

    • @ThePsho
      @ThePsho หลายเดือนก่อน

      Totally agree. It's common for people to look at this as easy or lazy, as just a guy just going up on stage and confidently bombing. In reality, it's quite difficult to pull off. Need proof? Go out to an open mic and try it.
      Think about movies that are so bad they're good. They work because the filmmaker isn't in on the joke. Once they become self aware, it becomes obvious and they tend to lose the natural humor. When you have to write jokes under that premise, and the audience knows what you're doing, and you still pull it off... impressive. It's all in the delivery. Imo, Norm MacDonald was hysterical, but few people on Earth could take his material and make it as funny as he does.

    I've watched this three times now and one thing that I find kind of subtle is how he (ie. the character, obv.) is never building off what the audience finds funny and is only trying to tell the audience what he wants to be funny. He either ignores or lashes out at the audience's laughter when it doesn't comply with what he deems laugh-worthy, and when he doesn't get the response he was hoping for he basically forces it out of the audience. It's a sort of anti-charisma.

    Man I have been having a very hard time lately and have been scarily depressed today and I’m trying to rely on my sense of humour to get me thru this and decided to rewatch this. The head meds part made me have my first audible laugh in a while and I needed it. Super grateful for Tim’s comedy right now

    I just love how he's talking about his wife's candle business, brings a guy up to talk about his candles, then gets him to propose to his girlfriend (dropping the topic of candles altogether), and then somehow transitioning into a rant about Obamacare. No punchlines, just moving from topic to topic without resolution.

    I'm embarrassed to admit that it took me at least 2 seasons of On Cinema to realize he's doing a character, and I saw this and thought oh nice it'll be the real Tim, he gets me every time.

      It's funny, I've been a Heidecker fan since Awesome Show and I used to watch clips of his stand-up character. But when On Cinema first came out I would watch an episode or two on and off and it never fully clicked with me. I knew he was making fun of something but I was under the impression it was just about bad movie critics. I had to reassess everything when The Trial came out and watched the whole thing from beginning to end, hadn't even realized Decker was part of the Cinemaverse until then. Now I go through the whole damn saga nearly every year before the newest Oscer special.
