    The one with Natalie Gilbert and Maurice Cheeks was actually pretty cool. Natalie started singing on her own, but got nervous and froze. Maurice Cheeks was the head coach of the Portland Trailblazers (?) and stepped over to help her get through it. It started as a solo, but ended as a duet thanks to Cheeks stepping up to help a girl in need.

    Here's the issue. As someone who sang semi-professionally. The US Nat'l Anthem is actually a very hard song to sing. Even some people who are normally good singers, have trouble with it because it requires having an enormous vocal range, which not all singers, even good ones, have. So I think some singers agree to do it, having never sung it before, and not realizing it's not a good fit for their voice. It also requires very good breath control as some of the lines are very long without a break for a breath. If you are an amateur or poorly trained singer, this can be very difficult. And of course the other part is that some vocalists will try to "make it their own" or disguise the fact that it doesn't really fit their vocal range by adding a bunch of weird runs and singing an odd arrangement of the piece. Which is not what people are looking for when they want to hear the nat'l anthem.

She was obviously super embarrassed and looked as if she was on the verge of tears. So he went out there to support her, and even though his voice is terrible, I thought it was a very compassionate thing to do. IIRC, the girl was only like 14 or 15 at the time, too.

    Rule one: Remember the lyrics. If you just remember the lyrics, you can sort of get away with speaking the song as if you are doing a bar song.
    Rule two: If you can't sing high, start as low as you can and for the love of Sam don't push those high notes.
    Rule three: Grab earplugs so you can actually hear yourself and not your stadium echo. That's the main reason why you will doom loop your lyrics.
    Rule zero: Don't be Roseanne

    I used to be a semi-professional singer (it wasn't my "main" employment, but I made as much money that way as I did running a cash register in a shop during the same period), and everyone who sings for events dreads the Star Spangled Banner - it's physically challenging, there's so many places you can screw up, and everyone knows it well enough that when you screw up it's obvious and not fixable.

      This reminds me of the speech from Heart and Souls. I don't doubt you are correct, but surely sticking to the right lyrics and the basic song helps?

    • @davidray6962
      @davidray6962 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@RandomFandomDragon Nope. The "basic song" has a range of an octave and a half, which while well within most singers' ranges on their best days is quite a stretch on a not-best day - and you can't fool around with dropping pitch or riffing like you can with other songs if your throat muscles can't handle a twelve note jump that day. And because of the phrasing and cadence, you can't slide through words if you don't remember (which is likely, because even reciting the words as a poem is hard. English has a natural iambic meter, but the Star Spangled Banner was written as duples - which is close enough to the same thing that I can't even explain the difference, but you can hear it - so your brain is constantly telling you that's the wrong word because it's not a natural English pattern). This pattern also makes the tempo and signature weird - the song is usually written as 6/8 in older scores and 3/4 in newer ones, but it really should be notated as 8/8 - which you hardly ever see in written music and is unfamiliar for most performers. It's easy to get either ahead or behind your backing music.

    • @bobbyanderson1054
      @bobbyanderson1054 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@davidray6962 you're right. And not only that, the music arrangement used is from an old English drinking song, "To Anachreon in Heaven."

    For the dishonorable mention to answer your question of who that man was behind the girl singing it goes like this. I believe the girl was singing the song and got distracted by the crowd and forgot her words to the anthem. The man is named Maurice Cheeks and was a coach of one of the teams at the time and he came over to help her out with the words since she was in shock. It was a very cool moment even though the rendition of the anthem was butchered. Cheeks got a lot of respect from me for that.

    Gotta give Roseanne credit- at least she knew the damn lyrics and the tune, lol. I've heard before this song can be difficult for even trained singers, but honestly I think the biggest issue comes when a performer tries to add their own flair. Rehearse, and then sing the song the way it was meant to be sung. If you can't quite hit the highs and lows, fine. Don't screech, and we'll forgive you.

    Sound issues are a huge thing in those big parks, so I believe Zarlenga. You could see her touching her ear- she had it playing back through the loudspeakers and it sounded different than the audio she was getting in her ear. Also, I think Bolton was having trouble with the reverb. Have you ever been on the phone and you can hear yourself talking back on a slight delay? It’s really confusing.
    I KNEW Roseann Barr would be included. That was horrible. And then she grabbed her crotch and spat on the ground-she was punking the ball players who do that sometimes-but it came off as disrespect.
    I don’t know if you’re aware but R. Kelly is likely to spend the rest of his life in prison. He was convicted of sex trafficking and racketeering.

    The Star Spangled Banner is notoriously difficult to sing, with a pretty wide range of a twelfth from the lowest note to the highest. People either start too low and can't reach the low notes in the first stanza, or start too high and run out of range near the end.

    As several others have mentioned, the song can be quite difficult, especially if a singer doesn't start out low enough. However, I know there have been at least a couple of famous singers who admitted they failed because they didn't practice, thinking they were already plenty familiar with the song. Or even completely forgot the words due to lack of rehearsal.

    That Christina Aguilera one. I mean... yeah, we know you have the chops, the range, etc. etc. ...we get it. But don't do that to EVERY. SINGLE. SONG. YOU. SING. Sometimes you just need to sing the song the way it is supposed to be sung. The song is about the words and meaning, not about showing off. I remember watching the Osbournes reality show and in one episode Kelly Osbourne was making fun of Christina Aguilera for doing the same exact thing to some Christmas song like Jingle Bells. The way she was imitating her was so funny. I was laughing and thinking riiiight???

For one thing, the slap back echo makes you want to slow down and slow down and slow down, to let what you're hearing catch up to what you're singing. So you force yourself not to slow down, but still you have this much delayed sound of your own voice assaulting you and competing and interfering pitchwise. If you can't hear yourself properly, that can do horrible things to what's coming out of your mouth.

      Because sometimes when you have cross-border exhibition, regular season or playoff MLB, NBA, or NHL games between American and Canadian teams it's not always available to have a singer from each country perform their respective anthems, so sometimes a Canadian may have to do both and may not get it right. Have you seen an American sing "O Canada" flawlessly, let alone the bilingual English and French version?

      I can tell you more about the hockey one. So the Memorial Cup is a tournament played against the team that wins their league under the 3 CHL (Canadian Hockey League) Umbrella, along with the hosts. The Portland Winterhawks, an American team in a Canadian league, ended up winning their league and thus qualifying for a tournament that usually hosts only Canadian teams

    The advice my music teacher gave me before I sang the National Anthem always sticks in my head when I hear the song going badly, she said that this is the one song that you can’t forget or mix up the lyrics or arrangement since everyone knows it by heart. The people who screwed up this song won’t ever live it down.

    I kept waiting to see where Fergie was but surprisingly she’s not on the list. I remember that was a big thing on the news. But tbh it is a hard song to sing with a big vocal range so you can’t be too harsh except for the remixes and mumbling.

  • @chitown1098
    @chitown1098 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    It is so incredibly that a singer like Michael Bolton would not know all the words to our national anthem. But believe it or not Kabir a former president didn’t know the words either and was caught on tape mumbling to look as if he were singing. That was both unbelievably sad and really embarrassing for this country. Rosanne Barr’s rendition was so horrible and offensive to so, so, so, so many in this country and many including then President George W Bush thought she was purposely trying to get a laugh at the expense of our national anthem that her tv show was cancelled the next day.

    It's hard to sing in the big stadiums. The sounds reverberate around the stadium, so the singers are rehearing their own lyrics, not always in the correct order. As some might bounce back to the singer before others.

    Its really not hard to sing if you can sing even a little bit. The trick is to start off in a low enough key so when you hit the high notes you can handle them. Kind of like people singing "Happy Birthday". You gotta start low and most people don't remember to and then it gets screechy. lol
