- เผยแพร่เมื่อ 18 ก.ย. 2024
- Welcome to our first-time watching as we react to Deepwater Horizon (2016).
Directed by Peter Berg Deepwater Horizon is a dramatization of the disaster that occurred in April 2010, when the offshore drilling rig called the Deepwater Horizon exploded, resulting in the worst oil spill in history.
It stars Mark Wahlberg, Kurt Russell, John Malkovich, Gina Rodriguez, Dylan O'Brien, and Kate Hudson.
We hope that you enjoy our reactions, commentary and review as we discuss the film's mind-blowing special effects, intense action scenes, and nail-biting moments of survival that had us rooting for the entire crew on the Deepwater Horizon oil drilling rig

Please watch Oppenheimer, Inception, Shutter Island, Arrival and Looper.
it's sad that this movie didn't get the praise it deserves for telling the story of something few people know about & unfortunately was basically swept under the rug even though it was devastating to the families involved & the environmental impact it still has
@divyanshsahai Adding the ones we haven’t seen to the list! ❤️
@luxleather2616 This was a fantastic movie. Not only does it depict a true event but it does so with some great cinematography, great sound and some gripping performances.
+ 1 for Inception.
When we went to see this in the theaters, there was laughter in the beginning with the jokes, but once the moment happened, it was nothing but silence with tears for the rest of the movie. They did an amazing job with this movie and honoring those who died on the Deepwater Horizon. One of my favorite Mark Wahlberg movies along with Four Brothers.
Oh absolutely, the beginning lures you in with its humor and light hearted banter and once the switch up happens, it's non-stop. It was incredible how they managed to make such a good movie and still be so respectful!
@@OfficialMediaKnights Awakenings1990 react!!!!!!!
Man, four brothers is definitely one of my favorite films of all time.
Four Brothers is a cult classic indeed.
@@OfficialMediaKnights please watch 4 brothers! I’d love to see your guys reaction even if you’ve seen it before
This film is truly remarkable. It's not the first time an event like this has occurred; a similar tragedy unfolded just off the coast of Britain on an oil rig named Piper Alpha, where 167 lives were lost.
It’s so sad when an event like this happens. We hope something can be learned so they can minimize the risk these people have to deal with day by day.
@@Lloyd-Franklin I was 18 when that happened. I remember hearing about that on the news at the time.
Truly horrible disaster
@@OfficialMediaKnights there's a 2013 documentary movie about that one called "Fire in the Night"
It's crazy that due to events like these fossil fuels have a MUCH higher casualty count than nuclear energy.
I saw this movie on SYFY last month and I was shocked that not one of the oil executives went to jail for criminal and safety negligence charges after the oil rig caught fire and it cost the lives of 11 workers. The oil spill cost $65 billion dollars in damages and that the lawsuit cost over $20 billion dollars.
It’s insane! The negligence cost people their lives and it caused so much damage. You’d think they’d be consequences
@@OfficialMediaKnights You have to prove intentional negligence in a court of law to send someone to jail. Same thing happens when jets crash, design flaws can be found, but the negligence is not intentional.
@@Joe67343i think thats easily proven when safety regulations and procedures are blatantly ignored. If one is ignored it can be a simple mistake, but multiple thats a pattern. The only two possibilities are either complete and total incompetence or complete disregard for safety. Incompetence is NOT a legal defense
@@Joe67343 Intent is proven when you blatantly ignore and disregard safety procedures for ANY REASON. Even if it’s due to your lack of knowledge. In this case it wasn’t, they wanted to finish quicker, cheaper, and make more money. Intent, intent, and intent.
This is the reason 3 of these people WERE charged and COULD have had jail time, the reason they didn’t was because they work for a multi-billion dollar company.
@@joshuacoldwater The reason the criminal involuntary manslaughter charges were dropped against the 3 men was become the burden of proof was extremely difficult to prove beyond a reasonable doubt. Prosecutors would have had to prove that they acted with a "wanton or reckless disregard for life."
This is one of my favorite Mark Wahlberg films. I live in Florida and the effect of Deepwater Horizon had on my state and the entire gulf coast
It's truly an incredible film! We were so shocked at the devastation this catastrophe has caused, for the environment and for the people. It's truly awful
@OfficialMediaKnights
Indeed. All because BP wanted to just cut corners and expanded their profit margins
The sound design in this film is absolutely insane!! The build up to the explosion is just perfection. X
My god the sound and the mixing! Phenomenal job! It really puts the audience right in the middle of all of it and sells the impact.
Please react to "Patriots Day," starring Mark Wahlberg. It's about the Boston Marathon bombing. I was there that horrific day and sustained minor injuries. I can honestly say that this movie was filmed with the utmost respect for all the victims and heroes. It tells the "full" story from every detail. Not just the highlights the news focused on. Rip to Martin, Lingzi, Krystal, Sean, and Dennis. 🥺💙💛
Thank you for your suggestion, adding it to the list. Glad these movies based on true events are doing it with respect. May they rest in peace ❤️
@OfficialMediaKnights thank you so much. I feel very fortunate enough to have only sustained hearing loss due to the blast. (Deaf left ear).
My heart remains shattered for those who lost so much more. 😢💔
@robertg7396 I (Ari) was born in Boston but my parents had us move when I was still young so we weren’t there when it happened. But I remember seeing the news and being devastated for all the people affected. We’re sorry you had to go through that but we’re glad you’re still with us. Proud of you and all the Bostonians who showed the world their strength and resilience ❤️
@@OfficialMediaKnights Thank you, Ari. It means a lot to me. I appreciate you and Denise so much. You're right when you say how devastating this senseless event was. Yet, at the same time, what came from it is, and was beautiful. Ordinary people, racing into danger to help total strangers, and becoming heroes in the process. All while not knowing if there was more dangers to come. Sacrificing themselves with the love of the human spirit. First responders, police, medical personnel etc. Many of the victims also went on to start charities to continue helping others to this day. This movie, Patriots Day shows all of this. It tells the full story, without having to add a "Hollywood" narrative to it. It is extremely well written, and directed. The acting, the score, cinematography, are all superb. Not to mention a cast of incredible actors. I hope you'll consider adding it to a future reaction. God bless! 😇💙💛
@@robertg7396 originally from Boston myself and I watch patriots day every year (as well as the documentary) and they were very well done and respectful. Boston strong!
The crazy thing is the crew of the Deepwater Horizon were well known for their safety record. It was reported that they had not lost any time as a result of personal injuries in 7 Years. And in one night, everything changed
It shows how seriously they took the safety of their crew. Thats why many people blame BP for the disaster.
Such a shame! At least the way it was depicted here and by what we’ve read they really cared a lot and put a lot of emphasis on the security of the crew, as you should!
Thank god someone finally reacted to this movie. I hope the trend catches on because it's such a massively slept on movie I recommend to everyone.
Such a shame it’s underrated! We thought it was a great film!
I LOVE Peter Berg movies for THIS VERY REASON. He honors those that are depicted.
You guys have become my favorite reaction channel, hands down. You have such good energy, it actually radiates through the screen. And i love when one of you has watched a movie before and gives a stare into the camera during pivotal moments, it always makes me laugh.
I live in New Zealand, loved your LOTR reactions.
Keep it up, wishing nothing but success for the channel.
Thank you so much! It means the world to us. Sending all the love to New Zealand ❤️
Some of my friends are in that movie. I worked as a pilot for Bristow Helicopters who did the flying and heliport scenes in the movie. The workers at the heliport were the real employees of Bristow Helicopters and friends of mine. PHI helicopters did the actual flying for the real Deepwater Horizon rig and for BP but they refused to do the movie. As such, Bristow Helicopters did the movie.
BTW, the Deepwater Horizon rig was not that far offshore. We regularly fly over 100 NM offshore. I’ve flown on occasion over 200 NM offshore.
(I’m a offshore helicopter pilot and Electrical Engineer.)
This movie is incredible and tells the story in a way that makes you feel like you’re really there. To this day the gulf coast in Louisiana and even in Mississippi is disgusting waters.
Absolutely agreed - it didn't take it easy on the audience and still managed to be respectful of the subject matter! Our hearts are shattered at how devastating the after effects of this event are...
I remember the disaster of Deepwater Horizon because for a few months, a lot of seafood was not available because of the spill. I was a kid, no one told me what happened, all I knew was that I couldn't have shrimp, crab or fish which were my favorite. Another movie you should check out is Sully with Tom Hanks. That's based on a real event.
It's honestly shocking how severe the consequences of this event were... Can't believe it.
We'll add that to our list, thank you so much for the recommendation!
Yes Sully is amazing!
this movie was based on the Oil spill of the century, plus the survivors probably had PTSD after that explosion
After seeing what they had to go through and god knows what else I’m not surprised. This event was horrific.
@@OfficialMediaKnights indeed, if I went through all of that I would have high level PTSD
I CLICKED ON THIS SOOOOOOO FAST - THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!!!! Incredible story that needs to be reviewed by way more people!
I think part of what makes big time actors work for roles likes this is that in the back of our heads we know that we are looking at people we respect and listening to a story they chose to tell together. It invokes this sort of “the elders are telling a story we should listen” feeling when you have not just famous actors but long respected artists as the face of your film.
I'm glad you guys reacted to this movie. It's really a hidden gem and i never hear anyone talk about this movie but it's such a good film. The scene at the end where they find him on the floor always gets me in the feels
The guy that Kurt Russell's "Mr Jimmy" has a quick conversation with on the helipad when they first arrive is the Director himself, Peter Berg, who's also a very experienced character actor in his own right, and always appears in small roles in his own films.
Say what you want about Marky Mark, but his movies are almost always worth a watch and this was one of my faves. Went in blind and was blown away.
I have only recently discovered your channel and absolutely love you two. So refreshing to see reactors that analyze the style and camera work in movies. Been going through your backlog the last week and I'm finally caught up. First channel I actually consider getting into patreon for.
Keep up the great work and sending all the love from Germany!
Marky Mark certainly has some incredible movies under his belt!! This one is such a highlight - it's just an incredible movie!
Thank you so much for your kind words and support, you really made our day with your comment! We're so glad to have you with us!
Liebe Grüße!
One hell of a movie it was. Based on a true story, all the actors did a great job.
Completely agreed - fantastic movie and incredible performances!
Peter Berg needs to continue making “based on true story” movies. That’s HIS genre. Friday night lights. Lone survivor. Deepwater Horizon. The Kingdom. Patriots Day.
I live near Galveston Texas and there is a museum of off shore drilling and it also includes a memorial for the crew of the Deepwater Horizon. Its pretty moving.
What, that's amazing that they did that! If we ever end up there, we have to check it out!
Classy touch too by you to leave in the video at the end all 11 people that passed away. Those poor people and families affected. R.i.p.
Such a powerful movie. Such a well made movie too.
I live in Australia, and i was in year 12 at school and still remember this event was even such massive news over here at the time. Chilling stuff.
And I just realized the angry father at 42:12 is country music singer Trace Adkins!
Holy cow it is!!
He does a lot of little things like this now.
If you guys loved this one, I highly recommend Patriots Day also with Mark Wahlberg and directed by Peter Berg
It’s on the list! Thank you for the suggestion ❤️
When this disaster occurred, I always knew about the aftermath. I never knew about the actual disaster itself that set itoff. I’m glad this movie was able to give audiences an idea, of terrifying that was.
It's horrifying to think about the terror those people on the oil rig went through... This film definitely captured that and was still able to be respectful of the event itself, which is so important!
When Mr. Jimmy stares at the BP guy after realizing no one from the drill shack made it, look at the guy beside Mr. Jimmy....that was the real Mr. Jimmy ❤
Jimmy Harrell played by Kurt Russell passed away in 2021 after living with cancer. Rest in peace. And all those who died that day.
FANTASTIC reactions guys!
This is one of the very very few rare movies where I genuinely forget that I'm watching a movie.
Thank you so much!
I live in SELA, and we felt the impact so deeply. The poor people that were lost, the animals and everyday people who lost their livelihood from the seafood impact. This movie is a favorite for me, mainly because of the very reasons you pointed out, but it never fails to make me tear up at the end. Love watching your reactions!
I worked on the class action lawsuit against BP that resulted from this catastrophe. I know this movie focused on what happen on the rig, but what not many people think about are the local fishing businesses that were destroyed by the tons of oil that filled the gulf. Literally thousands of local fisheries and private businesses on the coast went out of business because of this.
I really love the respect you showed to the men who lost their lives and their families by showing the memorial at the end. A lot of reactors skip it!!!
Ya'lls personal character is a big reason why you're my favorite reactors!
I've been hoping for so long for somebody to react to this movie on TH-cam, it is criminally underrated and the real people that were involved in this event deserve to have their story told. I think you two are the first ones to react to it and I wish all the big TH-cam reactors would watch this movie. Everyone should see this movie
lone survivor, patriots day, deepwater horizon - what a trilogy from wahlberg/peter berg. all serious, surprisingly get-a-lump-in-your-throat, well paced movies. and in patriots day, wahlberg gives one of his best monologues.
I remember seeing this film in the cinema, it brougth to attention this horrible events back to my mind, i was 10 years old when it happened and i could only recall the damage to nature the oil did, but i never thought about the people until the film came out. Its raw, its real. Its a good tribute to the heroes, the victims and the evil greedy men that create problems for those honest people that just want to earn a living for themselves and their loved ones. Rest in peace. ❤😢
Wow! Just wow. I have never seen a movie like that. The terror that follows for the rest of the movie after everything goes to shit is just mindblowing! I was crying with you guys. Thanks for introducing this movie to me!❤
Right?! The movie does not let up and horrified us throughout the entire thing! What a fantastic movie! Thanks so much for your support!
no way i love this movie 😭 back when it came out i initially watched it for Dylan O'Brien.. but i very quickly got invested into the story. Such a good movie, and very underrated
Oh completely agree, we were not prepared for how intense this movie was gonna be!!
@@OfficialMediaKnights you guys should consider adding "Only the Brave" to your list to watch/react to sometime.. it's also based on a true story about a wildfire that happened in 2013, it's absolutely incredible
My daughter had me watch this because Dylan O'Brien is in it. I had no idea that it was a true story til the end
Haha Dylan O'Brien had everyone in a chokehold in that era! We had heard about this before but had no idea just how awful it was.
Speaking of Dylan O'Brien, have you watched The Maze Runner Trilogy? Cannot recommend it enough.
I love the way you kept it silent while the pictures of the lost ones were rolling…. Big respect for you two. I absolutely adore u ❤ Merci !
Thank god finally someone did an actual full length reaction to this movie
“Imma talk to an offshore drilling rig. Hey Rig, how’s it going? Lotta people wanna stop you, and I just wanna talk to you ok? We should do a movie together. Whaddaya think?”
*Deepwater Horizon burns*
“Rig I’m not joking around ok this is the real thing, this could be huge”
*rig continues to burn*
“Alright well, think about it. Say hi to your mother for me, alright?”
How Marky Mark would handle this, for sure!
One of the most well made docu-movies.
Sound design is off the scale.
... and they managed to highlight all the key technical nuances.
Incidentally also this was the first movie that Kate Hudson and Kurt Russell actually did together. And remember he is her father well technically your stepfather but as far as she's concerned he's her father. He's been her stepfather since she was 3 years old. She said it was super emotional and especially when she was able to give Mr Jimmy a hug. She said when her character was able to hug Mr Jimmy it was a very emotional thing for her. For them both.
Everything in this film was totally captivating, from the writing, the editing, the visuals, etc. Every scene felt necessary and captured each point of the story so well. Combined with Steve Jablonsky's score and the fact that it was a true story and you have a clear winner. Great reaction guys.
Peter Berg is underated director. I love his movies. He has cameo in this - the man on the heliport saying that they didn't do tests.
So glad you two reacted to this! This movie graphically illustrates what happens in heavy industry when profits, loyalty, and productivity are prioritized over safety. TBH, the crane scene is very powerful and one of my favorite scenes in the whole movie.
Other true stories you can react to are Unstoppable, Sully, Lone Survivor, Black Hawk Down, American Sniper, The Outpost, Patriots Day, Midway, and 13 Hours: Secret Soldiers of Benghazi.
I remember seeing this movie yrs ago, (& remember when it happened irl.) I never expected it to be as good as it was.
This movie really nailed it in every single aspect!! They were so respectful and still didn't pull their punches when it came to the consequences and severity of the situation!
I was born and raised on the Gulf Coast in TX. I remember when this happened and the unmitigated disaster the entire situation way. BP has always been known as a half a*s money above safety company, but this finally proved it
So on April 20th 2010 the Deep Water Horizon oil rig caught on fire and sank the oil leaked out of the well and into the ocean. It took 5 months before they were able to cap the well it was the worst oil spill in history killing many wild life mostly fish and birds.
Such a sad outcome…
The fact that the woman that gina Rodriguez played got fired for calling the coast guard. Makes them more stupid and pathetic
It took almost 3 months to cap that well.
after you guys watched 2012 I was literally going to comment and request that you watch this movie but then I thought, “I’m the only one who likes this movie, I’ve never heard it be on anyone else’s radar so I’m not even going to bother” and then I saw this notification and I was like “no way” lol, I actually really like the soundtrack to this movie. And to add on, since I wasn’t sure of myself to request a movie last time i’ll say now that you guys should watch The Foreigner, I think is very underrated as well.
This is the first time I write a comment on a YT channel and I join a YT channel membership. I like their reactions and they bring me nostalgia for these movies 😂
Holy cow that's a big compliment thank you so so much!! We are so glad you're enjoying our videos, it makes our day!
I always remember my late grandfather telling me about a similar disaster that happened in the 80s in Scotland. The Piper Alpha explosion was extremely similar to the Deepwater Horizon explosion. He was a rigger too and he'd tell me stories of it. Piper Alpha was arguably worse, as the platforms were all connected. When Piper Alpha exploded, it sent a daisy chain of fire to the connected platforms.
Finally! You are the first TH-camrs to react to this movie, totally off the radar of the other TH-camrs who have not yet taken it into account. 2 others that have not been reacted to by anyone and are good are: Patriots Day just from this same director and also with Mark Walhberg and Only The Brave from the director of Top Gun Maverick, with Josh Brolin, both based on true stories.
I love you two I know I say it every video lol but your reactions are 2 sides of coin you two bring emotion and passion to every movie and game. To be honest you two are the best couple I'm glad to be on this journey much love ❤️
Thank you so much @beard1895 It means a lot to us. We’re glad to hear you’ve been enjoying these ❤️
- Just occurred to me that Kurt Russell and his step-daughter, Kate Hudson (playing Marky Mark's wife), are in this movie together. Very nice!
- The movie's director (and actor in his younger years) Peter Berg cameo'd at the beginning. He was the guy Mr. Jimmy was trying to talk to over the helicopter noise near the beginning.
10:08 he brought back his character from “Fear” in this scene 🎬
You guys will want to watch a presentation on the accident by Professor Roland Horne, Stanford. One of the absolute best ever introductions to any incident, factual and gripping at the same time.
so glad to see yall react to this movie. one of the most underrated movies ever made. and to know the actual survivors said this is one of the most accurate true story movies helps the impact of it. especially when you have family members that do this work for a living. good work guys.
I love how Kurt Russell and Kate Hudson are in the same movie as stepdad and daughter in real life
A different disaster. But I still remember the Piper Alpha disaster in 1988 located 120 miles of the coast of Aberdeen. 167 lives were lost. This is such a great film. Love your reactions.
Being from the oilfield, I bawled my eyes out at the end of the movie when the family ran to each other. My wife and I had just started dating and was one of the first movies we watched together.
A lot of guys down here in Louisiana, funnily enough it's where the movie takes place, are taking up oil rig and plant jobs. Gets a little spooky thinking about those jobs after hearing about this story.
Also, the accents are pretty spot on for this region. 👌
I didn't expect much from this movie when I first watched, but I really enjoyed it. They characters are competent and interesting which give you tension as they express their safety concerns. The film really sells the scale of the eventual explosive ending with great cgi all through, I had no idea what was real or a set. A testament to the vfx guys who worked on this.
You guys need to watch every movie directed by Peter Berg. No kidding. He’s the best out there now. Specifically, The Kingdom & 13 Hours. You will be blown away.
I loved the development of our main charecter. It are a degree of authenticity to the story.
Kurt Russell also gives a spectacular performance in this as well as in another film called Poseidon. As well as he did in Tombstone and St argate.
Another disaster, true story film is 13 Lifes with giggle Jorgensen that i hope to see you guys do as well.
Until then have fun and keep the movies rolling
I really appreciate your choice to cut audio and lower transparency a bit and just leave the memorial in its entirety. Actions like that (alongside a high media literacy and realistic reactions) are what make you two folks one of my favorite channels on the site.
This is one of my favorite disaster movies…Mark Walhberg is amazing and I always love Kate Hudson…THE John Malkovich is stellar as well…parts of it gives me Cherynobl vibes…
My best mates dad works on a offshore oil rig as a medical officer. He said when him and his wife watched this movie. They had to stop the movie as his wife was breaking down from what can possibly happen
This film is so anxiety inducing the pressure literally keeps on building and building till it all literally comes crashing down it’s so good and made so well and very effective of showing the aftermath
It really does just that! Such effective storytelling. It did a great job driving the point home.
I would recommend the movie - Sully. Another real event based movie. It would be a good continuation of the theme. ;-)
Its insane how considering how big a disaster this was that only 11 people lost their lives. Not to diminish the losses in any way but considering what happened its amazing that more people didn't lose their lives.
You guys should also check out the movie Sully, that's another incredibly done movie about the events of the Pilot Sully having to land his plane on the Hudson river. The pacing and how they tell the story is absolutely phenomenal, I think I went to see it in theaters like 10 times
the other guy in the movie, with mr jimmy, starring at don Vidrine on the boat after they got rescued , is the actual mr jimmy
"you can see it through a satellite?" trust me they can see you through an open window with a sat lol
First time I saw this movie was in school! I still remember my high school teacher putting this on and we were actually happy

Great movie! I’d highly recommend Berg and Wahlburg’s other films Lone Survivor and Patriots Day. Both also based on true stories and both are extremely well written and acted
Oh absolutely, we are adding those to our list now! Thank you for the recommendation!
@@OfficialMediaKnights you’re so very welcome, happy to help! There’s also another true story film Wahlburg did with George Clooney and director Wolfgang Peterson(Das Boot among others) called The Perfect Storm…GREAT DISASTER FLICK!
Thank you for taking the time to learn about this story🙏 Theres 2 other movies Peter Berg did that are both true stories and are well worth watching. Thank you
Thank you for reacting to this video. Remembered the disaster and oil spill aired on the news, and this movie really conveyed that pretty well. Yall should watch the CSB analysis of deepwater horizon.
I lived in FL at the time this happened - to this day, BP pisses me off based on how they refused to fairly compensate people and businesses who lost money on this disaster - tourism took years to rebound in the Gulf Coast
i remember this. the effects of this was/is so huge. i believe the effects are still felt along the coast. a differnt movie id recomend is "unstopable" (theres a few actors the have surportive roles in both movies)
I like this movie too. This movie taught me that every life is valuabe.
There is another movie based on a true story that I would recommend.
"Only the brave" it about a group of firefighters from California serves to extinguish forest fires.
I was in panama city the week before this happened. I NEVER visit the gulf coast so it was strange. The entire gulf coast was black from oil for what seems like years after this. The destruction to the environment was unreal.
i love this movie, i work offshore too and it really depicts corporate greed and the fellowship of people who work these jobs well
This is not usually my kind of movie, but it's gripping stuff and expertly directed.
I also love how at 8:30 they refer to the song "I Need Money" which was one of Mark Wahlberg's songs from Marky Mark and the Funky Bunch 😂
Ahahahha nice catch!!!
Titanic, The Towering Inferno, and Deepwater Horizon are examples of disasters due to greed, as opposed to natural disasters and accidents. What keeps me up at night is knowing that nearly every piece of infrastructure that is not immediately visible (like sewers, bridges, and dams), is more than likely in the same perilous condition, for the same reason.
I recommend Patriots Day, another great movie with Mark Wahlberg. Also another real life disaster.
I have relatives that work on oil rigs there's always a 3-week rotation in most cases
I remember seeing beach cleaning crews at Panama City Beach FL afterwards.
Amazing reaction to a stunning telling of a devastating disaster event. A great tie in to your 2.0 channel would be Still Wakes The Deep, a survival horror game based on a oil rig.
Only The Brave, great movie based on real events. Brings tears to your eyes.
