Each state has its own legislature, so the state capitol building is where the state Senate and House of Representatives meet to set state law. In addition to the legislative chambers there are offices for committees, the governor and many other state departments' business.

The state capitol is the seat of the state government We have four layers of government in the US: Federal, State, County and City and we pay taxes to all of them. In New Mexico we value our indigenous population and culture, the Capitol was built to reflect that.

Each state has its own capital city and the state government meets in the capitol building. Capital spelled with an A is the city and capitol spelled with an O is the building where the state government meets. For example, the state capital of New York State is Albany, and the capitol building is located in Albany.

The capital building in Texas is built with pink granite that was quarried and cut in Texas. The dome is taller than the capital building in DC. The granite looks exactly how it’s supposed to look. The architects and powers that be didn’t want a dull white building.

    • @jonadabtheunsightly

I do think the Texas capitol is definitely the nicest of the ones in that color range. But, I have to say, given the scale of the building, if you're zoomed out enough to see the whole building, you can't tell that that's granite, or see the texture of it at all: you really do just get an overall color impression, at that distance, and I don't think it looks as nice as some of the lighter-colored buildings. Up close, if you're standing right next to the building and can see the grain of the marble, might be a different thing.

At 14:14, Montana's state capitol looked like the architect's kid thought the model was Legos, pulled off the dome, set some other model (maybe a bank?) in its place, stuck the dome back on top of that, and the builders just went with it. That whole section looks like an entirely different building sort of just grafted in.

I'm in Delaware, I found Kyle's comments on our state capitol fair, but like Kabir I might put it just a couple of spots higher. I like when these buildings choose a style other than the typical one (neoclassical rectangle with a dome), and that certainly applies to Delaware's use of the old-style East Coast university architectural image (red brick with white wood trim). Yes, it does make it look somewhat like a university building, but this is the region where that style is so prevalent, and that makes it all the cooler as the state's symbol.

I just read an article published about our CA state capitol paying more than half a million dollars to upgrade the lights to LED, and to upgrade the heating and cooling system. They stated that by upgrading they will recoup the savings in monthly energy costs in a year and a half to the local tax payers. I have no idea what we as tax payers are currently paying for utilities to the Capitol, but I am sure it is a FORTUNE based on how much we pay monthly for utilities in our homes here in our State! I am happy you put California at the top of your favorite list Kabir, if you could see our Capitol in person, I know you would be amazed at it's beauty and the grounds are beyond gorgeous!

As previous posters have mentioned, each state has its own legislature, so the capitol building houses that. Additionally, some capitol buildings (such as Wisconsin’s) also house the Governor’s office and the state Supreme Court. The building will have the chambers where the the state assembly and the state senate meet, as well as offices for the representatives and senators. There will also be conference rooms for committee meetings, hearing rooms, etc. There will also be public spaces for the citizens.

When N C was a colony, we had a Royal Palace called the Tryon (Try on) Palace in New Bern & originally built between 1767 and 1770 and was the first permanent Capitol of the Colony of North Carolina and was home to the Royal Governor William Tryon and his family. In 1798, a fire started in the cellar and devastated the main building. The kitchen and stable were saved, The kitchen was demolished in early 19th century; only the kitchen office remained. The Tryon Palace standing today is a re-creation and is a popular tourist attraction.

Nebraska's capitol might be my favorite--love the crisp lines and symmetry of the low-rise perimeter structure surrounding the Art Deco-ish tower, reminiscent of the L.A. city hall. Also think Oregon's capitol is refreshing, albeit the central section has a bit of mausoleum vibe to it. (The tower was cut off too short and blunt, though. They should add another section, maybe a little smaller in circumference, but continuing the "gear teeth" motif of the lower section!)

You were asking about the color of Washington State's capitol building dome. It's lichen. The capitol city is Olympia, Washington, where the weather is quite damp, and the dome is made of sandstone. It's very porous. It absorbs water and dirt collects, which creates a perfect environment for lichen to grow. It has to be blasted away every few years.

Technically, the UK does have capital cities for Wales, Northern Ireland, and Scotland. The USA is a federation of 50 states, and each of those has its own government that's structured similar to the federal government and governs most aspects of public safety and criminal law. Personally, I like the classical architecture with a dome, because it's good symbolism.

For example, Albany is the capital of New York, you saw the photo of the capitol and the governor is based there but also has an office in New York City.

Washington State's capitol building gets masonry preservation work about every 6-7 years (costing about $3.4 million). That photo was taken probably 5-7 years after it was last cleaned. The building is mostly made of sanstone which is very pouorus so it retains water due to the wet climate, so as time goes on the roof tends to darken in color due to lichen growth, which is very common in the northwest. When cleaning they don't use harsh cleaning agents due to sandstone being fragile ( which also means you can't just powerwash it, or clean it as soon as it gets dirty) but gentle cleaning agents are used along with a spray compound that works to try to slow the growth of the lichen. The Washington State capitol building has the tallest masonry dome in the U.S. and the fifth tallest in the world. I can assure that Washington State does everything they can in order to help preserve the capitol building, and that they're not just sitting around while it looks gross 😂

@@quinn-tessential3232 it’s definitely not the most ideal lol, but sandstone is kind of special to Washington, even more so to the areas around Olympia. 20 minutes from the capitol, in the town i grew up in, they’re famous for their sandstone, the town is quite literally built out of it, and its the same sandstone that was used to build parts of the state capitol. sandstone also represents the state of Washington at the Washington Monument in D.C., and currently some state representatives are trying to get it to officially become the state rock.

North Carolina and Arizona are the only states with copper domes. North Carolina let theirs naturally oxidize by exposing it to the air, so it has that beautiful greenish hue. Arizona treated their dome, so it stays shiny like a new copper penny. So both domes are unique and beautiful. Too bad he doesn't point this out, so you can choose a copper dome as your favorite. 😅 If you ever fly to Phoenix and your plane comes in from the west, you will see the dome shining in the Arizona sun. There were other builds of it that looked more like a capital building like Sacromento's. If capital buildings like the ones in Sacromento, Missori, Arkansas etc. got a modern build, they would look something like Oregon's. State capitols are where the state legislatures meet. They have chambers for the State House and State Senate and offices for the Governor. One of the hardest things for foreigners to understand about the US is that the vast majority of laws that affect Americans are state laws not federal / national. From business licensing to driving laws to homicide - all are passed by state legislatures, signed into law by state Governors whose state executive branches enforce the laws and adjudicated by state courts. Federal law pretty far more rarely directly affects Americans beyond federal taxes. I worked for a decade in the Oregon state legislature. While we certainly had plenty of disagreements / political fights it is notable that the vast majority of bills passed either unanimously or overwhelmingly on a bipartisan basis. Often we were problem solving or reforming bad effects of prior legislation.
Our OR capitol building is weird looking from the outside - we called it the bowling trophy or the squirrel cage. But the inside is nice enough. I think Geography King missed a lot by not including the interiors in these rankings (and pics) - the state house and senate chambers, Governor’s offices, rotundas, etc.
State capitol-the building where the legislature and governor works. State capital (note different spelling): the city that is the capital city of the state (the city where the legislature meets). Note that the city is often not the biggest economically population wise. Think Albany in NY or Tallahassee in FL or Sacramento in CA or Salem in OR or Olympia in WA. Sometimes it is the biggest city (Boston in MA).

I disagree with Kyle on some of the rankings, but like he said, this is just his opinion. I particularly like Oregon's Capitol, and I saw it a few days ago on my recent vacation to Oregon. I also like North Carolina's as well. It's modest and represents the stature of the state when the building was built. It's humble, is well sited, and is the very center of the planned city of Raleigh. It sits on its own square block and doesn't share its context with anything other than some memorials on its grounds.

You like my state's capitol building? Next time you visit take it with you. Just leave the Golden Pioneer, it's the only cool part of it. The narrator forgot to mention that the two previous capitol buildings both burned down, the first one was in 1855 before it was even a state. The second one, a lovely Greek Revival building, burned down in 1935 and was replaced by the POS that you see now. Pointyhead-speak calls it 'Stripped Classical', I call it POS.

Edit - I forgot, I've been to Honolulu, and while I did go past the Capitol building, I thought it looked nice but not as memorable as the settings around it.

The state congress and state senate meet in the capitol building to discuss and vote on various bills. But there are tours when those aren’t in session. Honestly I wish that the capitol building in Tallahassee was in Central Florida as the capital city is just meh. It’s really not nice.

Don't agree with him about the Arizona State Capital. He doesn't even mention the beautiful copper dome. Copper was 1 of the 5 big industries that all started with the letter C. There is a mosaic inside of the state seal with the 5 Cs pictured. Local stone was used. All of that makes it unique and southwestern. The historic structure is a museum. The house and senate buildings are off to the left and right. And there is a tower behind. These buildings are all in use and newer. Remember that Arizona was the last mainland state entering the union in 1912, so the structures are young, except for the original building. The 1960 Legislature buildings don't look cold war to me but typical for the era. The tower is from 1974. You can tour the museum for free and also see the full silver service from the USS Arizona. The silver service is stunning and is engraved with natural and cultural highlights of Arizona. Copper dome much better and more unique than a black dome. Imho

State Capitals are just like nation capitals… people forget all the time that The United States is basically 50 nations in a permanent and unbreakable alliance. Each state has a fully functional government, with its own legislature, Supreme Court, and Governance. The European Union is basically Europe attempting to consolidate like the USA. Multiple nations in a fiscal and military alliance.
Also, the Washington State capital is one of the best in the country. It sits atop a plateau and is not just the capital building, but an entire campus of white marble columned buildings. Including the Supreme Court and a large library. There are parks and gardens, and the governor’s mansion. Also, he picked a horrible picture. We clean the capital regularly. Washington State capital is located on the edge of a temperate rainforest, things grow moss. It is sparkling white most of the time. I should send you a picture…

I'm from Washington. I have to protest here, which is typical for a Washintonian. It rains in the capital city of Olympia A LOT. Therefore, stuff grows on the capitol building. Thus, it is, INDEED, power washed on a regular basis. Judging by his accent, my guess is that he lives in a place that is much more arid. Washintonians have a joke that, instead of armpit hair, we grow moss.😅

Nobody in America cares about any state capitols, it's just another city to us, I am in Illinois and the state capitol is Springfield, and it is just another city to me. I have been there a few times, but it is nothing special, I played in a few pool tournaments at a pool hall there, and went to a strip club, and that's about it.
I think Peoria Illinois is a better city than Springfield, and it is not even the capitol city, just another big city in Illinois.

Being that you are not from the States, let me break this down for you as simple as possible. If you watch our politics in DC, where we have a president, a congress, and a senate who are all supposed to work together to pass laws, states have basically the same thing on a smaller scale. In DC, the do it with several buildings on Capitol Hill, and in each state does it in their Capitol Building.
States elected officials will meet at the Capitol to discuss and vote on laws that are state specific, and they also hold offices there. There is also a court there for state level court hearings. Depending on the state you go to, some of them will have other things included, like records rooms, libraries, things like that.

The legislature of the federal government, and 49 of the 50 states, consists of a _Congress_ which itself consists of a _House of Representatives_ and a _Senate._ The house is the lower chamber, and the senate is the higher chamber, akin to the House of Commons and the House of Lords commonly found in parliamentary systems. Members of a House are properly called _representatives_ not _congressmen_ since both together form the Congress.

Maryland is always the best at everything. No need to rank. :). I wish he’d mention the reason why we still use the original capitol building is the historical significance. It predates the U.S. since it was built in 1772 and it’s inside that building where George Washington resigned his commission as commander in chief and where Congress ratified the treaty of Paris which ended the Revolutionary War. I think it looks a lot like a Capitol building so I’m not sure what he’s expecting.

What this guy fails to realize is that the Rhode Island State Capitol building is so large because at the time it was built, Rhode Island was the wealthiest state per capita in the nation. Additionally, he's assuming that the North Portico [back side] is the Front of the building. In actual fact, the far more imposing South Portico facing the City is the Front. He really should have looked at more photographs before he wrote his script.
