    I had been looking for this fight for years. I was in attendance and was in the ring at the end of the fight. My stepfather trained Jerry Martin and I accompanied them up to Rahway. Amazing to see my 17 yr old self behind Jerry. A great fight. This was when the light heavyweight division was exciting and very competitive.

    I remembered this fight Jerry Martin said"" I came here to beat Scott"".
    Once Scott lost the networks forgot about him.

    Thanks for the upload! I watched this on TV back in the day and wondered whether it existed anywhere on TH-cam. I searched several times but it never popped up until now. I watched several of Scott's bouts and he was tough, but Martin really had his number this day.

    Wow...was James Scott drained by the heat before the fight started? He looked sluggish from the start.

    • @theparalexview785
      @theparalexview785 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Yup, I remember thinking that when this fight was televised back then. I watched every James Scott televised fight and something about him seemed off this day. But it was a bad matchup for Scott. Jerry Martin was inconsistent but very good this day and outworked Scott. In retrospect I wonder whether Scott indulged in too many gym wars and didn't save enough for the real bouts. That was one of Angelo Dundee's pet peeves -- he didn't like the Philly style gym war culture, bashing each other's brains out in sparring.

    Thanks for the upload. This turned out to be the only big win in Martin’s career. He got three title shots but came up short in all three. Excellent fight here though.

    • @mattpearce6465
      @mattpearce6465 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      He was beating Matthew Saad Muhammad convincingly in his title shot with him as I remember, when the fight was stopped--possibly prematurely-- after he got tagged in the 10th or 11th round. By then, Matthew was fading badly, but still a good champion. I always wondered what might have happened had the referee let the fight go on a bit longer. Martin was staggering forward in what looked like a trance after a hard right...I guess we can only wonder.

    • @teofemo7000
      @teofemo7000 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      He gave Saad a tough go. Martin was strong as hell.

    • @teofemo7000
      @teofemo7000 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@mattpearce6465 Saad was breaking him down and I'm sure Martin was not gonna see the final bell. He did pit up a worthy challenge. Muhammad was landing clean right hands and you could see Jerry's legs weakening.

    I remember whenI was a member of joe Frazier’s gym and jerry Martin was there 1982 Leon tabbs was training him and Leon tabbs was my trainer at the time. Later on I would get another trainer . This fight was inspirational for jerry he trained very hard for this fight if James Scott would have won things were going to change in his life dramatically but he loss and I never heard anything from him again they never televised a fight from prison since not that I know of Nice video.

    I remember there was such an uproar over Scott and the morality (Ha...this is boxing...morals? That's a good one!) of allowing an inmate fight on national TV and contend and be ranked. Seems funny today. I don't know if the fact that today this would be no big deal speaks well or not of our present standards. James just got nailed on the temple and suffered that "Where did my legs go" phenomena. Never really recovered. I think this bout led to him trying a different style and trying to box against Dwight Braxton. It was a stupid decision by his trainers. James was a banger...not a boxer and when he was pressed into slugging in the Braxton fight, he did very well but he was mauled badly by Dwight when he circled and jabbed. RIP James Scott.

  • @PhilAndersonOutside
    @PhilAndersonOutside 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Years later it was revealed Scott’s strategy was to lead with his left jab and straight left to Martin’s body. Someone from Scott’s entourage “sold” this info to Martin’s corner (there is no honor among thieves) Martin was waiting to launch that overhand right, and Scott never fully recovered from that 1rd knockdown.
    Never the less, Martin outworked Scott almost from the start, the best win of his career.
