Probably he best prepared Eddie ever was for a fight. Trained rock hard and motivated. The fights against Marvin Johnson and Martin showed what EMM could have been had he not been so lazy at times in and out of the ring.

Funny how styles dictates fights. Jerry Martin whipped James Scott, who whipped Eddie Muhammad, who just whipped Martin

I always tell the casual fan that linear way of thinking don't work in boxing. Like you say, styles dictate fights.

Well they were sure entertaining. I guess Mustapha and Saad Muhammad were good friends because they never fought. Would have been a hell of a fight.

Give Eddie credit. Martin had just defeated the monster of the division, James Scott. Eddie could have taken it easy against a lesser opponent in his first defense, but he took out Martin when he was at the top of his game.

Muhammad is one of the more aggravating fighters to watch b/c of what he should have been but because he didn’t want to throw punches he was just a fucking boring dude to watch. He coulda been a star if he threw punches. It’s probably why he isn’t a popular trainer. "Hey Eddie will you train me to be a passive bore?" I like how Clancy was calling him out on it. The guy thought he could punch so hard that he could fight heavyweights. little did he know that no one wanted to watch him walk around and throw a punch every seven minutes.

He just did not have a big motor. A term used for defensive football players. He just did not have the ability to throw a lot of punches especially in 2 straight rounds.

No way Eddie could beat a prime Larry Holmes.

Neither could Michael Spinks, Michael fought a 35 year old Holmes. Eddie lost to Renaldo Snipes and didn't look very good.

@@danielE.muhammad7622 Thanks for the info. Makes sense since he was around a while before becoming really famous. I have sometimes wondered what woulda happened if Eddie was fighting when they had the 168 pound division and how much damage he would have done in that class. He is a fighter who came around in a really tough era at 175 and if he was fighting in the 90's, it's possible he'd go through everyone except Roy Jones from 168 to light heavy. He was absolutely superb. And it's a shame that he gets slept on with Michael Spinks and Matthew Saad Muhammad getting most of the limelight back then. Sorry for the rant.

Mainly based on his one win over the seemingly invincible James Scott, Jerry Martin had plenty of opportunities. After this try (and loss) against Eddie Mustafa Muhammad in '80, Jerry ran off three wins against no-name opponents before being given the chance of a lifetime: fighting in back-to-back fights against two different champions. What followed were a loss to Matthew Saad Muhammad (thank you Larry Hazzard) in 1981 and nearly six months later a destruction at the hands of Dwight Muhammad Qawi. That is how much respect Martin was given.
