You are a hero, I have a mystery leak into my trunk and rear footwell and was completely lost for a solution until I saw this video. I checked under the roof trim and found a similar crack in the sealant at the rear corner of the roof. The water was tracking down along the wiring loom for the rear lights (which runs inside the near side sill along the rear footwell. I cleaned the area and applied sealant and the car is dry despite ongoing heavy rain (I live in Cornwall). People like you do a great job. Thanks from the far southwest (st. Ives).
Hi Jim, I have a 2008 Civic and have a wet rear passenger carpet. I found water in the boot well 2 days ago. it seems the water has traveled from the boot to the rear carpets. Annoying as hell. I live in the High Peak (UK) and it rains A LOT here. I have inspected the weather strip on the roof and sure enough I have a hair line fracture near the hinge. How have you gotten on? has sealing that fracture solved your problem?
2002 accord where my rear floor passenger side is always wet, how do you get that roof trim off to check does it pop out with a plastic wedge type tool?
Lol I have a ponda also man is frustrating mines started on passenger side pillar I bought silicone from auto zone and it work for like 3 months then is started leaking again a few days later the driver side pillar started to leak please let me know if you find a solution thank you.
Thank you for the informative video. This is a great example of poor car design. Same problem with my 08 Honda Civic; same design, same problem. What happens is over time (ten years+) and miles of rough roads, car being jarred by pot holes, the car frame flexes and twists. Because of the poor design, this area where the roof is joined to the door frame and A-pillar is highly susceptible to metal fatigue and cracking, which results in cabin leaks. This only occurs to older vehicles with this design. By the time the leak occurs, the vehicle warranty has expired and Honda will not own up to it. Writes it off as "wear and tear". I removed the drip molding, cleaned the effected areas with a wire brush and alcohol, then applied two coats of Flex-seal.
I did everything that Honda service bulletin TSB 03- 03 recommend but for some reason the leak got worst! I removed the damn "$31 3M seal crap" and I used a $6 J-B Weld SteelStik Steel Putty Stick instead on most of the seam roof molding channel. Leak problem solved no more leaks and it did rain for about 3 days in row in MN. I hope this help someone with the same problem ✌
Wonderful video and analysis! I have a 2003 Honda Accord LX which I love so much. I hardly drive it, but it has the very same leak. Unbelievable! I am starting to lose my love for and trust in Honda products.
The "spot welds" between the roof and the side panels which goes across front windscreen, A, B, C pillars and ends at the rear screen, the space in between the "spot welds" are filled with an epoxy filler (the same epoxy filler that is around the front shock absorber mounts in the engine compartment). The epoxy filler dries out in the engine compartment because it is always hot and dry because of the engine heat. The roof and side panels are not, becuase it is covered with the black strip that does not allow the epoxy filler to dry and before it dries at the factory, it is covered with body paint, so the epoxy does not dry at all, and with heat and cold, expansion and contraction, it will soon crack and allow heavy water with pressure to flow through the cracks. It is not only a structual defect, it is also the porcess of NOT allowing the epoxy to dry out before applying paint. The same occurs with Kia Spectras or Shuma around the back and fron area. I redid it my self by removing the epoxy filler and replacing it with Fiberglass filler, but after 8 years it has started again. I have to redo again. Old ways of attaching the side panels to the roof are a better design as there is a water channel on top of the car doos that run across the A, B and C pillars, it looks dated and a little bit ugly at times, but it prevents these type of occurrance
Had to redo again in 2018 with Epoxy sent car in for spray painting (whole body). In 2022, body filler started to crack because car flexes at both sides of the rain gutter. Removed Epoxy, surprised that there was no rust. Proceeded to send it to a professional to get it all welded. Professional has done roof replacement for many Toyota Alphards and Vellfires so it must be a good job. 3 weeks have passed, so far no cracks. Everything welded, coated, underseal applied and metal powder (automotive epoxy) and metal welding completed.
Great video. I have a 2008 Honda Civic (EU) and have discovered water in spare well and wet rear carpets. After researching it seems this is a common issue. I've inspected under my weather strip and sure enough I have a small hair line fracture. Mine is right near the boot lid hinge. I'm going to strip all the boot trim in a couple of days and seal all the weld seams up. Also going to remove the weather strip and seal the fractures up there too.
I have had an essentially trouble-free 2007 Honda Ridgeline, so I just bought a super clean, low mileage 2013 Civic Si less than 3 months ago. I had water coming in on the driver's side A-pillar and soaking the floor. Water was also filling the right side of the trunk. Dealer said it was leaky glass seals, so I had Safelite replace both front and rear glass. The problem continued after the next rain. Safelite tested all around the glass seals and sunroof with both high and low pressure water, but there were no leaks. I am having a hard time finding anyone who will diagnose and repair this problem on my car. This has been a 3-month drain on my time and money. :'-(
The car has never been in an accident or had any sort of frame damage. windshield was replaced due to rock damage ( cracked windshield). The windshield does not go up as high as the defective area so this was not the result of replacing it. My best guess...over time, whatever compound Honda used to seal the opening had shrunk, cracked, something which started to let the water enter the pillar and travel down into the cockpit. I fixed it myself by adding Black Permatex to the opening and tapping the raised metal section down with a hammer. I then layered the surrounding area with additional Permatex and let dry. Been through a few car washes and 5 rain storms and no leaks! So, problem fixed.
Good morning sir did you ever got to fix the leak on your 09 accord I'm having the same problem I'm thinking of taking it to a body shop I would appreciate any advice you can give me thank you
Thanks for your help! My 2009 Odyssey leaks from the Driver side/ side airbag and my van has never been in an accident, like other post suggest! This is definitely poor craftsmanship from Honda! It's not just the Odyssey.... Just check out all the Honda leaks on youtube!
Great video. Thank you! It helped me diagnose a similar leak. Now, as a suggestion, it would be helpful to pin this comment to the top. Once I figured out that my leak was similar, my next question (of course) was about how to fix it.
I've got a 2006 Accord with the same problem and I've never had roof damage. It started suddenly and comes out at the bottom of the glove box as a very slow drip. I haven't seen it come out where the cloth roof meets the plastic. Thanks for the fix, I'm gonna try that.
Interesting video. I noticed a leak in the same place on my 2013 Honda Jazz, with the rain water dripping inside the cabin where the plastic a pillar trim meets the fabric roof lining.
ATG has addressed this major problems (driver, passenger, foot-well & back), to Honda. Honda followed the American ways of building cars because they all agreed most owners buy new after 4 to 6 years. So let the poor /or Honda's suckers pay for it if she/he keep the car beyond 100K or 6 years.
Every Honda car I ever owned leaked water inside the cabin. All the leaks were a result of similar issues with the way the body panel sections were assembled together and sealed.
2007 Honda Civic 3 door and yes! Leaking on both driver side and passenger side. I have to now shop vac the carpet and shampoo it with vinegar. Put mold stuff on it to help that mold and mildew.
I’ve worked on cars since 1988 Started off working on Honda and love them. But I can tell you with absolute certainty Honda quality has gone downhill since about 2002. I don’t recommend Honda to my friends anymore. Toyota only now And I never buy models with sunroofs
The trick is to dry it out quick, I actually put a small home dehumidifier in the car for 24 hours, that dried everything perfectly. Then sprayed lysol on the padding, carpet etc. And put the car all back together of course after the leak location was sealed at that seam under the plastic strip .
Terry - good video. Unfortunately, water leaks seems to be a rather common problem across many makes & models of cars. Complicating the issue is some cars have more than one common source for a leak. I own a 2005 Accord Coupe, and have had water leaks for a few years in my trunk. The spare tire area can become a lake after a strong rain. While I haven't diagnosed the issue yet, after much research, the rear tail light gaskets are likely suspect (they tend to become fragile and no longer seal as the car ages). I also suspect I have a secondary leak in the rear cabin area. Your video has opened another possibility for me to look into (all Hondas going back to the 80s, and maybe further, have that same channel in the roof). It is unlikely Honda will help you as your car was 7 years old at the time you posted the video. It likely didn't leak when brand new, and as it aged, the sealant & weld in that area opened up, allowing water to leak into the interior. Most people would try a silicon sealant where you discovered your leak and leave it at that. I love Hondas myself, but the Japanese cars aren't miles ahead in quality as they once were. Other manufacturers have improved, and manufacturers such as Honda & Toyota have had to cut costs to compete.
Exact same problem in my 2009 Honda and I’m very disappointed!!! My car has no accidents and this manufacturing defect isn’t acceptable at all, did you contact Honda regarding this matter? They should recall all these models and fix them for free!
They used to be. I work on Honda’s for a living and I can tell you Honda’s quality went to absolute shit in 2009-2010 timeframe. I used to only drive Honda’s for my daily drivers. I won’t buy another one after the issues we have been seeing In the shop. Guess Toyota has my business now
HI ........... I bought my car Honda accord 2008 from Dubai and I am using it her in Iraq Baghdad since Oct 2009 and there is no Honda agent , unfortunately this winter, I am having the same problem water is leaking from roof back side and front side same as in your video ..........Honda must do some thing for this OR I am not recommending the car to any one anymore............ By the way The car has never been in an accident or had any sort of frame damage and no any glass or body repair.
Thank you for the info Same problem with Acura TL 2011 but in the drivers side leaking to the fuse box cuasing the alarm going off in the middle of the night.
@ Seven Corners did you find out where the leak is coming from? I have the same problem, replaced windshield going to replace wiper cowl and I need to replace fuse box. Any idea how to fix that?
I have a 2009 Honda Accord EX . This is also what happens to the passenger side. So much water I have to use a shop vac when it rains. Did you contact Honda? If so, what was said and what happened?
That sucks but if you think that's bad.. on my 7th gen civic they completely FORGOT to seal where the gas tank meets the trunk quarter panel. Failing sealant is forgivable but forgetting to use it completely on a seam is.. like wow.
I had a similar problem in my honda 2005 same leaking spot, it was one of sunroof drainer on the both side blocked by dust and dirt, when i clean the sunroof drainers the problem solved
Yours was different then. I pumped water through my sunroof drain; no leaks. I tried windshield; no leaks. Checked thoroughly, narrowed it down to roof moulding, add in the video. Yet to fix it though.
My 2003 is now leaking somehow and has a pool of water in the back driver side foot area. I'm really worried it's the area under the roof trim as it's a pain in the butt to repair. 100% I would JB weld that shut like the other user because I've used JBweld to repair a trash disposal which gets constant water and abrasion. I was worried that i'd have to replace the roof trim, as mine is in terrible condition, the plastic has stripped from it, it doesn't seal in the front window area anymore, and it costs a lot, like $175 each, or even if both that's expensive as heck.
Exact same thing on my honda integra dc5. The sealant goes bad. Mine leaked at both ends of the roof gutter. Had to take everything out of the car to find the leaks. Also check the shower plastic behind the door as the sealant round here goes off as well
Add my mother's 09 to the list. During heavy extended rains the front/rear passenger side floor literally is a pool. Suspected she left the windows cracked but after 3x I grew suspicious. BTW this is not just Hondas. I have seen Chev/Fords... you name it leak. I would attempt to fix this but 10+ yrs old it is time for another car.
Just to update... My father who has fooled with cars his entire life simply got a piece of tin foil and a thick rubber band. Has not leaked since. Took him maybe 30 seconds. I did not see it but there is a "drain" hole or pipe?? and he simply covered it. Now any rain just lets gravity take care of it. Also open your back trunk and look just above the tail light. Any water runs down the channel and will go right into the noticable gap. No clue as to where it goes but I usd some clear silicon to fill that "hole". Do both sides.
seems like this is a common problem for old honda cars. my 95 civic leak at the side of the windshield. put a new silicon sealant and the problem solved once and for all.
I am having the same problem, how you fixed yours? Replaced wind shield, wiper cowl and need to replace fuse box still leaking. I bought 09 acura tl, any advice is appreciated
Me too! My 2009 Acura TL was w water specialist who ripped out passenger carpet thru out pad seat out and can seem to recreate a leak. I have brought to Acura dealership hoping for diagnosis. Any update on your conclusions ? You’ve posed 3 yr ago maybe can help My situation. Ty
The Honda Accord is absolute trash anymore. Look at the lawsuits Honda has got themselves into recently. I used to be a Honda fanboy. Always talked up Honda and their engineering. Honda R&D is like 20 miles from me. Im about half tempted to take my 2010 accord and drive it through the front door of their plant. Honda sucks anymore. Go Toyota and don’t look back.
I have an '07 Lexus rx400h and the B pillars inside show water marks and the seatbelts are damp when it rains a lot. I've been looking for a reason for weeks. Finally will bring it to a body shop...when they are taking new appointments at the end of August! (More than a month away. Because they are booked solid)
I Got Honda Civic 2008 and from the same spot panels came out from joint and water is inserting and leaking inside cabin. Due to this reasons here in Australia , Honda gonna soon wrap up their business and companies like Mazda are selling 10 times more car than Honda. Very disappointed Honda customer .
+aleem khan One possibility could be your tail light gaskets. This seems to be a rather common problem with several different Honda models here in North America once the car has aged. The gaskets apparently age, become brittle, and allow water to leak into the vehicle. However, this isn't the only known issue for water seeping into the rear of a Honda.
It appears that you car at one time has damage - i don't think that Honda had a defect. it looks like body work was done on roof and why was windshield replaced??? why is car just leaking now and not in 2009 or 2010?
I have a 2008 malibu and on the driver side the floor was getting wet. I thought I had a bad windshield seal. I pulled the piler cover off on the driver side and could see the water running down from up high. I thought it was a leak up high on the windshield seal. Nope pulled the head liner down a little and the air bag was wet up above the windshield so I guessing under my roof trim Ill find my leak issue.
You are a hero, I have a mystery leak into my trunk and rear footwell and was completely lost for a solution until I saw this video. I’m from New York and we had a rain storm last night and I’m going through this exact feeling rn same spot on my 08 accord lx-p so unfortunate
Did you fix this problem? I'm from New York too, and I have the same problem that you, and I have Honda Accord 2008.
Honda 2006 same crap except on drivers side everytime it rains,,,, i had enough....
I have same problem bout to fix it same year as yours. Deff not the drains hoses from sunroof.
Having the same problem with my 2006 Acura RL all of the sudden. Has never happened before now everytime it rains it leaks in.
Thank u!!! I have 2008 Honda Accord. It's doing the exact same thing. So Honda recall.. make it right...
seems like this is a common problem for old honda cars. my 95 civic leak at the side of the windshield. put a new silicon sealant and the problem solved once and for all.
2008 exl- I bet we will find the exact same defect!! Very disappointed in Honda!
my EG civic has this issue as well
I thought it was sub seal or sunroof drains but man. Your was leaking really bad my just stains.
Did you fix the issue? I'm facing the same issue and I cannot stop the leakage. Would you please help me? You reply is highly appreciated
I have the same problem with my 08 Honda accord. I will never buy another Honda. did you figure out a way to fix it?
He said he used RTV but you're actually supposed to use seam sealer
Same issue with 2009 accord on both sides.. I see that it is very common
i have the same defect on my Honda Fit.....can you direct me to any Honda email or phone you use...
hello so how did you fix it
Filled the gap with Permatex heat resistant sealant. You can buy it at your local auto shop or on Amazon. Good luck.
I have 03 Accord EXV6 coupe same problem.
Same thing with my 2001 civic lx on driver side
I'm having the same problem, leaking in the same spot as yours. this sucks
I have the same problem on my Acura TL 09
I am having the same problem, how you fixed yours? Replaced wind shield, wiper cowl and need to replace fuse box still leaking. I bought 09 acura tl, any advice is appreciated
Me too! My 2009 Acura TL was w water specialist who ripped out passenger carpet thru out pad seat out and can seem to recreate a leak. I have brought to Acura dealership hoping for diagnosis. Any update on your conclusions ? You’ve posed 3 yr ago maybe can help My situation. Ty
@@atefazmi7707 did you find source ?
Just fill it in with some silicone sealant
I am having a leak on both sides and my son is too we both own hondas
Me too on one side. I will never buy a honda again
I have honda civic fd 2008 with same problem as well,,
Step Up ,helpful Honda
Wow, i think most honda have this problem
My honda civic having the leak from the same area, i think i found the rpot cause after watching your video.
Yup, have the same problem with my Honda. Applying sealant seems to be the fix.
Same in mines
I have had multiple hondas. And will never buy another honda. Will buy toyota instead.
Did anyone solve this issue? Please help me guys
Yeah it's the frame the glue seal
I Got Honda Civic 2008 and from the same spot panels came out from joint and water is inserting and leaking inside cabin. Due to this reasons here in Australia , Honda gonna soon wrap up their business and companies like Mazda are selling 10 times more car than Honda. Very disappointed Honda customer .
Thanks
yea I have honda civic I also have same issue...
I have the same problem in my Honda Jazz 2007 the water leakage in the boot.
I have the same issue.
I really doubt Honda ever cared about videos like these.
I have the same damn problem
It looks same problem is in my car Acura rdx
It appears that you car at one time has damage - i don't think that Honda had a defect. it looks like body work was done on roof and why was windshield replaced??? why is car just leaking now and not in 2009 or 2010?
Damn your car is dirty
I have the same problem with 08 odyssey on the driver side IS BULLSHIT!!!!
I have a honda with the same problem grrrrr
What yu do about the fix?
lots of talk but little fix ;(
Hondas are garbage now
Buy American.
