@@jefgibbons Standard price for Cubase Upgrade in the US is $99 USD, but I got version 13 on sale for $69 USD. I stopped using Reason as a DAW when I bought Cubase 11. I only use Reason as a VST plugin now inside of Cubase. I originally bought Cubase because Reason Studios was so far behind it was painful to use compared to any other DAW (sad truth). I haven't used Reason since Reason 6, and 13 looks like a "worthy upgrade" but $199 is a bit much. Seems like the upgrade price was always around $129. I always think they could be doing more than they do, however in the end I usually upgrade but Never! as soon as a new release comes out, after a few months they usually offer a large percentage off the upgrade price. I have used reason since the beginning of time 😊.
Jef, Can you PLEASE make a video on the sequencer only in REASON 13. The New features are not making things easier. I have not seen a step by step sequencer turorial at all. If you know of one I sure could use it about now. Ready to GIVE UP ON REASON ALL TOGETHER. I just want to have my Reason 12+ back!
Thanks SS, except now I'm realizing things about it that merits another video. Are you a happy subscriber? Or a happy full-license owner? I'd love to hear your perspective. I wouldn't be happy if I paid the big upgrade price and found out there are a bunch of things missing that aren't clearly labelled on the Reason 13 page. All it says is "Reason Core"... Not cool...
It is a lot better, and I'll always use reason as a vst within Cubase for sound design but I just can't work with the sequencer anymore even after the improvements
@@coldskoolbeatz don't get me wrong I cut my teeth with rebirth back in the day then moved over to reason, at maybe version 2 or 3 ... it's still amazing for sound design, the limits are endless and some of the players have been ahead of anything else available over the years for quick inspiration but I just don't understand why they never updated the sequencer until now and tbh the update for the sequencer still feels archaic.
I haven't used Reason in many years, but I wanted to buy a copy and start making music again. The only thing that has stopped me is I don't see them selling a physical copy. I like to own the physical copy so I don't need to go online when I install, plus it doesn't feel like I own it if I can't sell it later when/if I'm done with it.. But it looks like they only sell a download version.
Sorry to vent here but I'm _very_ pessimistic about FL Studio's future. We used to get *cutting-edge powerhouses* like Maximus, Vocodex, Harmor, Sytrus... some _hidden gems_ like Morphine, Ogun or Drumpad.... In comparison to that, a chord generator (do artists not feel insulted by the deeply personal music-writing process being replaced with a "generator"?), a Splice clone sample subscription service (FL Cloud), a preset machine that _locks you out_ of the internal controls (FLEX), _redundant_ substractive synths (Kepler does not bring much to the table if you already have Sawer, GMS, Wasp, Wasp XT, Simsynth, Poizone, 3xOSC etc and a chorus plugin you feel me?), slapping a _free_ AI model onto a menu... don't seem like compelling updates to me. The "free life time model" has resulted in updates being more shallow each time, in my humble opinion...
@@meru_lpz Nothing wrong in venting, I am sorry you have found no joy in FL, but I have used it for that long now and I dont need to pay again, like all other DAWS which charge nearly every year. I dont like subscriptions for DAWS either. I hope one day you will find the perfect DAW for you. Take care.
Been a reason user since version 10. Last upgrade was version 12. I am not upgrading to version 13 as I did not like their response when I asked them if my license was perpetual. FYI, their response was that no software is ever perpetual. F Reason Studios long term. So no, not upgrading anymore
The old browser was horrendous, and slow to load patches. Is it loading faster, or the same? Anyhow, I've been making KK NKS with previews of Reason devices, that way you also just keep just the good sounds. To much fillers everywhere that slows you down. I'll stay on 12 as there is no new feature that I need as a Rack and KK NKS user.
I went from 6 to 10, I would have thought they improved on the sound, it was still tinny.. You'd probably have to wait till v20 before they catch up with what we have in 2024, decent sounds from the devices, but a long and wounded experience if you were to use it as your main daw, make a 1 hour job take 10 hours..
I don’t know I bought reason 12 a while back and have barely used it maybe only a handful of time since I got it so I’m not sure if I’m gonna do the upgrade because I don’t know if they added enough new stuff for it to be worth it unless you’re using it as a DAW. I only use it as a rack plug-in
On paper it seems like a good DAW. In fact, it is a different story. In 2024, having to connect cables and more cables is already more of a hassle than a solution. There are other DAWs that make life easier, and get straight to the point. We want to compose, and not have to deal with miles of cables and this 2005 way of working. It's still a toy. More cumbersome every time, yes.
When is the last time you used Reason? I almost never touch the cabling, they connect automatically. It's as fast as any DAW. The difference is IF you want to get under the hood, the workflow is like the analog gear many of us are already used to using.
@@_P_M_ That is precisely his problem. It's a niche DAW in your words. How many people in 2024 opt for analog vs. the ease of computing? The number of people who would choose that way of working is anecdotal.
@@marcelochagra3307 How is that a problem? Reason has always used the virtual rack concept. Many people prefer that style of analog routing. If you don't then you should use something else. There are many options out there. Something for everyone.
Very small update actually, that completely ruins the browser. No one wants a floating browser that obscures the project/rack/mixer/plugin in 2024 just because it has tagging. NO other DAW is without a docked browser, only Reason does this now. You think that's a GOOD thing? All the others seem to do tagging easily within a docked browser. That's all they needed to do, update it and not take the docking option away. It's a complete deal breaker indeed, stopping my Reason+ immediately.
My biggest gripe with Reason Studios is not just the upgrade price, or the fact that they removed the favorites for devices.. ..it’s the fact that they never upgrade the devices that are already in the software. I guess this goes against the business model of offering substantial improvements that most users would appreciate. Instead, we get a shiny new something or another’ that is similar to devices that are already in the RE shop. The epitome of quantity over quality
They did update all devices that use samples and made them able to record dirrectly into them. I would to see some of the devices get an update same as Dr Rex did but part of Reasons charm is the fact that there ikd devices are like real hardware and dont change.
@@HOLLASOUNDS Real hardware devices get upgrades all the time. That's why we have so many different versions of the SSL, Neve Console, 1176, etc. Personally, I'd love to see Thor NN-XT/19 and Kong get an upgrade. Reasons time stretch Algo is pretty dope. Wish they'd incorporate that into those samplers.
@@coldskoolbeatz Well I'm only talking about the old Reason devices because the new devices often dont follow the realistic Rack devices in the way they look and function. They either have multiple faces that switch with buttons like Polytone or they simply look nothing like a rack device like Objekt. Looks like they gave up on the realistical hardware style devices long ago as was to restrictive.
This is a common complaint with NI as well, lots of new instruments but few updates on things like Battery, Massive X, and Maschine. I'd love to know just how close these companies are from not making ends meet... It might shed light on upgrade prices that are too high, lack of essential updates, and subscription prioritizing... everyone has to eat I guess...
@@jefgibbonssince they’ve been sold by their founders, both NI and Reason Studios have many more hungry mouths to feed (a.k.a. investors), rather than “just” the people who make the software.
At that price I am shocked!. Been using Reason since Reason 5, but at this upgrade price I am thinking it may be time to move on to another DAW. I could understand 99$ for the upgrade, but not the price of a complete other DAW .
Been playing with 13 since this morning. This is the best update to Reason in a long long time. The Sequencer/Edit improvements alone are worth the upgrade for me.
My Friends .....all reason users are friend for me....I think you Say true words.....199 € and you buy evrythink from reason studio..... Who do not love reason studios politics can look in other place.....you all go to restaurant in a year you pay more than 199....why peaplo Say Is a lot Money? I do not think so ......that's all!!!
The upgrade price is too high for what you actually get. Looks like they want to nudge people towards Reason+ by making regular upgrades increasingly expensive, and holding back some features for subscribers only (which are otherwise sold separately). As soon as companies get a taste of that recurring revenue, they get less and less friendly about letting people actually buy software instead of just renting it.
I have Reason 11, might upgrade when it goes för €99 (199 is a bit much I think) but also thinking to get Studio One hybrid instead for less money than the Reason upgrade & because I might get the Native Instruments komplete kontrol MK3 & Native Instruments lists Studio one as a compatible DAW but Reason is not, strange that Reason is not compatible? Thanx for the Reason video :)
why bring up chord sequencer? it doesn't come with the full version. it's like 69 bucks extra, and was released a year ago, it's not a reason 13 feature. not mad atcha, but i was pretty disappointed to open reason 13 finally and not find it in there
Yes that's not good, I was annoyed by that to at the time, infact I'm also annoyed and bit bitter over haveing to pay more then twice the price to get the equivalent of 11 suite in 12.
@@HOLLASOUNDS It's not even the price that upsets me, it's the fact that the non-subscription version is not even the full version... I didn't realize this until after making the video. Thinking about making a follow up video to clear this up. But it's just not right!
@@jefgibbons The full version is Plus subscription that would be the equivalent of Suite. I don't like it and yes as a stand alone user I payed 3x the price of 11 suite to get all the same devices in 12. One thing that is annoying is the plus offline mode requiring licence owners to also have to log in either ones a month or year. As a license owner I never want to be blocked from using the software I payed for. Currently I cant open Reason on one of My laptops, bloody annoying.
Defiantly one of the best Reason updates of late. I've been with it since version 2 (back in 2002) and have always found it very uniquely different to other DAWs.
@@MrMarcLaflamme Exactly. I'm a reason fanboy but it's both madening the fact the they lost time for people who don't RTFM and the poster saying this is a novelty. It's more like Reason 13 - So much the same...
@@MrMarcLaflamme its still a pointless addition....piano roll needs a semi major upgrade, also i mainly to trap and hip hop. I would love for reason to put a boost and eq knob and out knob all in one section like fl studio has for 808s.
I've been a Reason user since version 2.5, but I stopped at version 11. I love the CV and audio routing capabilities offered by the DAW version (which can't be done when using it as a VST Rack). However, I haven't upgraded to version 12 and I'm unsure about upgrading to version 13 (regardless of the price) because in 2024 it's not possible to have such an archaic MIDI management. Direct routing from the MIDI out of VSTs like InstaComposer or Scaler to the MIDI in of VST or Rack Extension synths isn't possible. Nowadays, the market for MIDI generators is rich (thanks in part to artificial intelligence), and Reason Studio's are preventing their users from accessing all those delights. Not to mention MPE management. I've had a couple of MPE devices for 4 years and there's no way to use them to their full potential when working in Reason.
have been using this software since version three, I stopped at version seven and still nothing understood, this software is not fluid and the sounds output by the different machines are outdated... I prefer fl studio mpc but it will teach you everything about production if you are a beginner
£199 = 235 Euros . That's right - every time Reason updates - or releases a new rack device - UK users get kicked in the balls by having to pay a surcharge of 36 Euros more (for the update) than everyone else just for being British. And no-one from Reason has tried justifying this discriminatory behaviour.
I am loyal reason user fro 2000,and willing to ugprade to 13 fron 12 ,but the took away edit option from top bar and its pissing me off,why not to have two options ,everytime i have to go left?i never almost use tool window ,but do lenth transpose and volume wich was infront of me,reason years behind ,and all new toy they released most of us have in vst, like the tool chain you can find it in arturia effects
LOL. I've actually been sitting on the fence for a Reason upgrade for about 20 years. The last version I bought was 2.5. - I got interested when they made the plug-in version but didn't upgrade. The upgrade price seems to be the same no matter what version you have. I'm still not sure if I should upgrade, so I got Reason+ for one dollar for the first month and will test it out.
TBH I haven't used multitimbral anything in Cubase for 5 years... I did a test a while ago that showed it makes minimal difference with RAM and CPU... so any modern day computer it really doesn't matter if you have 16 separate instances of Kontakt or Omnisphere. I'm guessing the performance hit would be similar in Reason.
R13 Upgrade price is $ 199 This is too high price with no additional benifits as compared to R13 subscription which contains all instruments, effects, utilities and sounds. R13 standalone should have all instruments, effects and utilities atleast with ugrade price of $199.
They dont ajust for currency's so UK price is £200 which means I'm paying £40 extra because $200 is not the same as £200. Now I have to go around to find a 3rd party selling to get the price I should get.
I still have my first Reason sessions ever from 2000-01 long time user. Stopped @ R11 Suite because the value in updating was not there in the features an instruments added. I will take a peek back at it now.
One of my current flaws with Reason is my ability to match loudness in this DAW compared to Studio one in my headphones. I think its cool they focused on some mastering tools for this upgrade but since 12 cant users use Izotope as a VST for that?
Wish they had Kontrol S integration. Although you can map some areas manually. I’m still on Reason 12. I use reason inside of Studio one professional so that way I can have integrated features. Hope to see it come to reason one day. More videos please!
Shills be shilling, how can you say this update is the best ever for $199, lost vst thumbnail pictures, lost favourites...and got a delay and some other stuff that we didn't need. oh but we have sound categories now...only not for vst's. Awesome.
man....I been using reason for 15 years...they definately fixed 80-90% of everything annoying about the old versions in the new one....its really smooth now its set up more like cubase 13 and studio one mixed with reasons.......you gota use it to know what Im talking about
@@johnisrael5183 They only gave you a new browser and devices. The tool bar was already there they just moved it down. Gain, side chain, and stereo tool already there just turn them into devices. So if you upgraded for 200 you got a browser, synth, delay, and new edit view. No MPE, ARA, stem separation, midi routing, strum, editing midi features, piano lock to scale feature, and mastering audio. For 200 I can get all that and more in any other DAW 😂 but too each it’s own.
I upgraded to 12 from 9.5 during the Black Friday sale for $100, and I'll likely do the same for 13. Upgrade prices used to be $125. I honestly think the price hikes were to push the value of the subscription model. I love Reason but it pisses me off that they treat subscribers better than those of us who bought their software.

The first Reason 13 video I'd watch. Thanks, Jef.
Same.
@@R1PPA-C Excellent for sound design. And everything you said is why they made it a plugin.
But it looks like they only sell a download version.
you can sell your license by transfering it, im selling my license of reason 12 for £200 if anyone is intrested
I love it !!!!
Yes, more reason videos!
FL Studio, free life time updates. New update soon, a chord generator and so much more.
Yeah, that’s just beautiful… upgrade price here is too high for sure.
Chord Sequencer should be part of the DAW if not go back to companion and either update or install as indicated in companion
If U turn on direct record on the player, it would have all the chord notes in the sequencer
Twice what a Cubase update costs?
I went from 6 to 10, I would have thought they improved on the sound, it was still tinny.. You'd probably have to wait till v20 before they catch up with what we have in 2024, decent sounds from the devices, but a long and wounded experience if you were to use it as your main daw, make a 1 hour job take 10 hours..
Too much of a sell on your behalf, Jef...
Why?
I don’t know I bought reason 12 a while back and have barely used it maybe only a handful of time since I got it so I’m not sure if I’m gonna do the upgrade because I don’t know if they added enough new stuff for it to be worth it unless you’re using it as a DAW.
I only use it as a rack plug-in
I'm hoping to make some good use case videos in the future... I didn't use 12 much, but with the new browser I can see myself using it a lot more!
I upgraded because of the browser.
Ive moved on to bitwig . 350 CAD . Not from 12 to 13 . Reason is a vst
They outpriced themselves for me as a longtime user.
Just got it for £99 would not upgrade otherwise
Very small update actually, that completely ruins the browser. No one wants a floating browser that obscures the project/rack/mixer/plugin in 2024 just because it has tagging. NO other DAW is without a docked browser, only Reason does this now. You think that's a GOOD thing? All the others seem to do tagging easily within a docked browser. That's all they needed to do, update it and not take the docking option away. It's a complete deal breaker indeed, stopping my Reason+ immediately.
Many people say that Reason is useless and FL Studio would be better.
That upgrade price.
I've literally bought a second hand car for less. 😂
I JUST WANT A FREE COPY OF OBJEKT !!!
Upgrade def not worth it
At that price I am shocked!.
I have to agree here, the upgrade price is way too high…
I have Reason 11, might upgrade when it goes för €99 (199 is a bit much I think) but also thinking to get Studio One hybrid instead for less money than the Reason upgrade & because I might get the Native Instruments komplete kontrol MK3 & Native Instruments lists Studio one as a compatible DAW but Reason is not, strange that Reason is not compatible? Thanx for the Reason video :)
Yeah, we need more compatibility with our keyboards!
why bring up chord sequencer? it doesn't come with the full version. it's like 69 bucks extra, and was released a year ago, it's not a reason 13 feature. not mad atcha, but i was pretty disappointed to open reason 13 finally and not find it in there
Yes that's not good, I was annoyed by that to at the time, infact I'm also annoyed and bit bitter over haveing to pay more then twice the price to get the equivalent of 11 suite in 12.
@@HOLLASOUNDS Yeeeeah, I didn't know about this!! There isn't an official document on it, gonna have to make a vid about this...
@@jefgibbons Reason 11 had 3 price points $99 lite, $300 Standard, $500 Suite, Reason 12 had 2 price points $400 standard, $20 a month subscription.
Come on man all those midi features you say reason needed were already in the Tool Window.
This ^^^ . The only new MIDI tool is the velocity ramp.
@@MrMarcLaflamme Exactly. I'm a reason fanboy but it's both madening the fact the they lost time for people who don't RTFM and the poster saying this is a novelty.
It's more like Reason 13 - So much the same...

@@yaBoyRome Yes with the pen tool but there is a new method of applying it using the "tools"... That's what I was referring to.

I hate them so so so much !🤬🤬🤬
Cheers 🥂
No Mpe Support no Update for me..
I am on 10
With you... would love to see that!
I've had a couple of MPE devices for 4 years and there's no way to use them to their full potential when working in Reason.
i’m with you on the lack of MIDI in here. i found workarounds but i mean, you can’t even reverse/inverse notes in the editor?
@@doodoostickstain You can actually
have been using this software since version three, I stopped at version seven and still nothing understood, this software is not fluid and the sounds output by the different machines are outdated... I prefer fl studio mpc
but it will teach you everything about production if you are a beginner
£199 = 235 Euros .
That's right - every time Reason updates - or releases a new rack device - UK users get kicked in the balls by having to pay a surcharge of 36 Euros more (for the update) than everyone else just for being British.
And no-one from Reason has tried justifying this discriminatory behaviour.
Offline authorization is worth it enough for me
Yo great vid. I think the R13 upgrade is great❤. But yeah I sooo need that Reason hat too!
So you still have to subscribe to it or not? I stopped upgrading a few years ago when Reason went to a subscription base.
this should have been a simple update and the synth a RE. Reason once again nickle and diming its core users
No way... Reason 1? Wow!
Faithful Reason user since version 5
LOL. I've actually been sitting on the fence for a Reason upgrade for about 20 years. The last version I bought was 2.5. - I got interested when they made the plug-in version but didn't upgrade. The upgrade price seems to be the same no matter what version you have. I'm still not sure if I should upgrade, so I got Reason+ for one dollar for the first month and will test it out.
where'd u get that hat!!!????
Love the update but we need MIDI tracks for multitimbral instruments like Kontakt and Omnisphere
Not seing $199. That's an almost comical asking price for an upgrade that should have been $49 with the synth an optional buy in the shop.
I’m with you on this…
R13 Upgrade price is $ 199 This is too high price with no additional benifits as compared to R13 subscription which contains all instruments, effects, utilities and sounds.
R13 standalone should have all instruments, effects and utilities atleast with ugrade price of $199.
i agree on this
They dont ajust for currency's so UK price is £200 which means I'm paying £40 extra because $200 is not the same as £200. Now I have to go around to find a 3rd party selling to get the price I should get.
I agree 100% wish I had addressed this in the video.
I used that upgrade money... to buy a Bitwig license :P
That’s intriguing! Gotta try it one of these days…
@@jefgibbons Refreshing to have midi through and a decent midi editor for starters. So creative in many ways... Worth a look 👍

@@johnisrael5183 They only gave you a new browser and devices. The tool bar was already there they just moved it down. Gain, side chain, and stereo tool already there just turn them into devices. Think you pay 150 for the upgrade and 50 for support. Like in Steam.
