  • A nice Stihl 031AV I built out of two parts saws I got from the scrapyard for $5. Add one carb kit for $18, total investment = $23 for a clean runner. It's running a 25" 3/8 round-filed chisel skip chain. Way too big for a little 48cc saw, but it was all I had lying around at the time and it's still pulling it alright.

Chain is freshly hand-filed. I don't claim to be an expert but I know I do a competent job.
    1. Maybe you've never cut hard, dried Douglas Fir before. Big chips are rare.
    2. Perhaps you're unaware of the blurring effects of video compression on areas with fast motion. The 090 and 181SE videos appear to be throwing mostly dust too, but there were 1" long chips on the ground from them.
    3. Did I mention this is a 48cc saw pulling a 25" chain?
Thanks for the constructive criticism though.

I have two of these saws -- one I've had for years that's currently in pieces and another I just bought on craigslist. They're great small saws and are built to last. They really feel great when you replace all the anti-vibration mounts. The sixteen inch bar is about right and that's what I have on mine. Gotta get it to run right now. Need to clean out the carb screen and put new fuel lines in it. Great vid!

Big bar, but it handles it great! Love seeing that old saw go to work

@bikerbenny some of the 031av's had points and others had coils...the one and only problem w/ these saw is that once you shut them down there isn't enough airflow to keep the points/coil cool and they eventually in theory burn up...i've had my 031av for awhile and i cut enough wood to heat my house in northern ohio and no problems so sometimes itts just bad luck

The electronic ignition coils were problematic on these. A coil should put out several thousand volts if it's working properly; you'll need an AC voltmeter.

Sharpen your chain, and you'd have some chips, instead of dust..
