Last weekend was the final clean out of their place before an estate sale, its demolition and splitting into 4 lots. I always hoped my dad would gift it to me when i was older. Claiming it out if his dusty, quiet, 2 yrs unused shop wasn't what i invisioned. Glad it gets to outlive its original owner
I just restored m.y 031AV. Hadn't run since the early 90s. Put in a new ignition module, carb and replaced the ordinal 20" bar with a new forester 18". I love this old saw and it get used more than either of my two newer saws. Thanks for your video.
Fun stuff i bought one of those thru an action site not complete but still its going to be good fun to restore , hard to find the starter and carburator cover with choke here in Sweden but il try for a couple of months to find some the shipping from the States is silly really . They look cool to be so old !
Im pretty sure i have an 031 from the early or mid 70s but in comparison with every other 031 i see the gas cap is on the top (like both your saws) while mine is actually on the lower corner of the broad side of the tank. Ive never seen another one like that. Saw is great though, true power and upgraded it to an electronic ignition. "Fell off the back of a truck" in 1980 and the fortunate finder sold it to my grand dad, who gave it to me this past year.
Hi kain, I have a points 031. Put a electronic module (atom I think) in it as the condenser was not working.. starts and runs well, but have no grunt.. I heard that the flywheels are slightly different on the points vs electronic versions as they have differing timing? Will keep messing about with it till I work it out. Great old saws the 031. We used them in the 80’s as scrub cutting saws in the steep hill country. You’ve got a good channel.
Dude, just found your channel a couple days back. Awesome stuff brother. I have an old 041 av. Those 70s-80s stihls were badass and bulletproof! Love the 031’s. Definitely Want to add one to my growing collection of saws.

So I have an 031 from 1970s somewhere in the 70s I need a carburetor for it and when I look it up all the carburetors say that it fits an oh 31 but not the 1971 version. How can I tell if it’s the 1971 version, and is there a difference in the carburetors? I do not have the original carburetor to go off of🇺🇸
Love your videos! I just recently picked up an 031 red top like the one in your video and an 020 in mint condition both for $400. Both are in mint condition. Hardly any paint wear! The 031 still has factory paint on muffler. Do you know how to look up what year it is? The starter assembly doesn’t have the tree stump logo just says stihl. Do you think this part was replaced. Thanks! This is the cleanest 031 I’ve ran across. Bought from a guy selling his saw collection!
That's Awesome Ryan! Love those red Tops, yeah starter might have been changed cause you would think it would have the log logo...you know I'm not sure how to check year on those, good question...might have to Google it...appreciate you Brother!😊

They look badass! My grandpa was a lumberjack in Yugoslavia when it still existed and he loved Stihl so much he wouldn't even touch any other brand :)
