    I have too many pencils, too many books, and I watch a lot of color alongs. It does all become overwhelming at times.

      Me too, and find I am watching for hours and not doing enough colouring, so I am trying to reorganize my tiny little corner space and think I have quite a few supplies that could go to the op shop ... I definitely got too carried away just buying after practically every review I watched ... absolutely crazy, and the worst part is most of the books on Amazon and Ebay have really crap paper which doesn't help !!! Also I bought heaps of markers and I'm really hopeless using them. Maybe I should learn to walk before I can run, hahaha

      I second both statements!! I find myself just collecting and not actually coloring much. And I always feel like if I just have the exact pencils they are using I can get better results.
      Amazon printed books are the worst!! And I still find myself watching hauls on them. It’s a losing game at this point! 🙃

    Love your first tip. I’m new to this hobby so I’ve spent an inordinate number of hours watching TH-cam videos. After watching a coloured pencil review I always feel an overwhelming need to purchase that set. I have both the Prismas and Polys plus the Mungyo soft pastels for backgrounds. I have added Black Widows and Derwent Inktence to my Amazon cart. Fortunately budget has prevented me from making these impulse purchases. Your video was the wake-up call I needed. I have more than enough with the two sets I have to spend many years of colouring while getting to know them. I am about to go into my Amazon cart to delete the Black Widows and move the Derwent Inktense to “buy later” (much later 😏). Thank you.

      The Derwent Inktense is a wonderful set to have because they’re different than your typical colored pencil. I love mine but always go right back to my Prismacolors. It can be very overwhelming when you have too much.

    • @patriciaherd8167
      @patriciaherd8167 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I came across a video tutorial on how to use Inktense pencils using a page from Joanna Basford’s World of Flowers. I plan to buy the pencils used in the tutorial from my local art store that carries open stock for all the major brands. It will give me the opportunity to find out if I like them while learning how to use them. I understand they have quite a learning curve. I won’t feel as bad if I spent the money on a few pencils if I don’t like them rather than having bought a full set to collect dust in the back of a cupboard 😊.

      Yes, she is so right! I would implore new hobbyists to heed this advice. I wish I had listened. I have too many pencils but my go to set is still my 150 Prismacolor Premieres. They really have everything you need in it.

    I bought the dahle 133.. i think it was the best purchase..I think it can fit any pencil probably with the gripping mechanism it has.. so far. I'm loving my Brutfuner Squares, I put them in a case with the Brutfuner Macaron to have more pastel colors. I just love the feel of both of these pencils. I wish I would have snagged one more case before they went out of stock. I'm doing it first thing when they come back.. oh and I finally got prismacolor 150 set for a birthday present.I'm just using them for tutorials until I get a little more use to them..you can use one pencil up so fast.. lol. So I think the Brutfuner Square pencils are definitely my set I just really love them I just wish they wouldn't sell out. But I think I've learned to stack up..lol

    One of the biggest things that I avoided when I started was swatching out the colors. This was a huge mistake. I highly suggest you follow Pam's tip #3, and swatch your colors. It really allows you to plan color combinations with a lot more confidence.

    • @PamelasPassionforPencils
      @PamelasPassionforPencils  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you James. I avoided it too when I first started coloring. it just seemed so time consuming, but I quickly learned how much time it can save me in the long run and how much frustration it takes away when I'm trying to plan my colors for my pages.

    Hello Pamela 🙂 I wanted to start off by saying CONGRATULATIONS on having over 20,000 subscribers!!! Like WOW!! So amazing and I know that you are over the moon excited about that! I am so very happy for you! You deserve all the adult coloring followers of the world! Honestly, you're the best teacher of this hobby that I have come across. You are able to break things down in a way that we can understand the information and the rationale behind each thing that you teach! Which I do believe helps us to remember the information and to apply it to our own coloring style. This is yet another wonderful tips video from you!! Disclaimer: this is a long post so please forgive me I wanted to get out all that I needed to say lol Each tip given here; you have taken the time to decipher what us new to the adult coloring world need to know the most! Seriously it's like you read my mind and I'm sure that I am not the only one that feels this way. Each one of these tips are sooooo very important to being able to work on becoming a more confident colorist. #1 Choosing one set of pencils is so important because if you have multiple sets on just one page you are bound to get lost and forget which set you have used on what. Not to mention having to have all the space to keep them separate and what not. #2 Sharpen your pencils when you get them to get that wax coating off and to get into those smaller spaces. Also not using such a heavy pressure when you do because that tip WILL break. Especially with the Prisma's and I have noticed that it is with pretty much ALL of the wax-based pencils that I have. This is a great tip because a lot of people, including myself at first, didn't know there was a wax coating on your pencils when you get them, and they won't color as well with it on there and it may not show the true color of the pencil at first. #3 I think is one of the most important tips you gave. Swatch your pencils when you get them!! You hit the nail on the head with this one. I didn't understand why I was doing this last year when I first got into adult coloring, but I did it anyway because you said it was important and boy oh boy can I testify to that tip! I couldn't tell you how many pencils I have swatched and thought WHAT?? The barrel or lead of this pencil looks NOTHING like what is coming out of it LOL! And that includes all mediums, not just pencils. I had a marker the other day that I was swatching and the cap and end cap of the marker is pink however guess what color came out of it?? Brown!! No lie! Straight up brown! I couldn't believe it. And I have had several pencils preform the same way. And the best way to mess up one of your coloring pages is to put a color to it that you think is one way and turns out to be something completely different! Oh, what a surprise that will be lol thank goodness for your advice on the Tombow erasers as well Pam! But swatching also lets you get a feel for how your pencils are going to perform on paper especially if you swatch with a gradient from light to dark. Really great advice with this one. Side note: I've swatched each of my pencils a few times trying to get the system down that I think works best for me. I've swatched in artist sketch books, other people's swatch sheets until I FINALLY found Pamela's downloadable swatch sheet that has the longer rectangle boxes with enough space to write the name and number and then the rectangle for a light to dark gradient. Wonderful tool that she has created and it's my final time swatching with her printout! I use my canon printer and the Bristol Vellum 67lb paper that I LOVE, that Pamela also recommended, and after I am finished, I put them in a sheet protector and into a GIANT old time trapper keeper that is about 4inches with side pockets, as well as a section with an expandable file folder that I keep all my extra copies of things in sorted out and my color wheel for quick reference. I've divided notebook paper into different sections such as color theory, notes, Pamela's tips, tricks, and hacks and a few others. I've also got her color combination sheets printed off and in order of each set of pencils I have to keep up with my favorite color combinations I have found from Pam's video's! #4 and so important, spending time getting used to one pencil set! Thank you for that one because I am just NOW after a year into this figuring out that is EXACTLY what I need to be doing! I've spent so much time "playing" with all my pencils that I have not given just one set enough time to actually learn how they preform! Which btw, is exactly what I am doing now with my current WIP from Hannah Karlzon Daydreams and it's the kitty with the mushrooms and weeds picture from that book. Since I have only colored 2 full pages since I started coloring July of last year, I let myself get overwhelmed and wouldn't start a whole page because I didn't have the confidence in myself that I would be able to finish it, I grabbed one set of pencils and I got out my color wheel and started small. With the little weeds first I picked out the colors I wanted to use then onto the larger ones, then the hanging flowers, the larger mushroom shaped flower and I still have the kitty and large mushrooms, the ground, and background to complete but it's coming along nicely and it's because I picked this one brand of pencil and I have focused soley on my swatch sheet of them, my color wheel, my Sarah Renee Clark Color Catalog, and pictures that were already colored, and my imagination for inspiration to color what I have so far and I am honestly proud of myself and I have had tons of fun coloring. In between taking care of 3 littles, a household on my own, AND getting fresh produce from the garden my dad has put away and canned or frozen such as the field peas and butter beans I've had to shell, the corn I have had to shuck and take off the cob, bell peppers, jalapeño's, tomatoes, strawberries, potatoes, okra, squash, cucumbers, watermelon, cantaloupe and on and on I could go so my progress is very slow but I am so close to being done. And the tip of staying with one set of pencils has really been key. #5 working on figuring out my own coloring style has been a process but is an excellent tip because no one colors the same as someone else and if you continually try to you will become discouraged and give up. This hobby is meant to be relaxing and fun and a stress relief for those of us that are stressed or depressed to the max with just life in general. So, the fact that Pamela gives us this tip is AWESOME!! It's so important to find our own way because we are not all gonna be the Chris Cheng's (whom I adore, and her work is AMAZING) of the world we are gonna be *insert your name here* of the world! You got this! And Pam's bonus tip of NOT overwhelming ourselves with coloring books. Because too many options and trying to find a page we want to color and what pencil works best in which book and if we are trying to color with several different pencils in several different books and we don't know which pencils work best in which book that can become OVERWHELMING and cause you to get stressed and give up! You guys I am SOOOOOO sorry for this long comment, Pamela forgive me, but I just think you're amazing with all the work that you put into helping us become the best colorist that we can be and keeping this hobby fun and relaxing and not getting stressed, overwhelmed, and give up. Again, congratulations on 20,000 followers! I am so happy for you and thank you sooooo much for these wonderful tips and tricks!

    Thanks Pamela for your tips and reminders. I started with the 120 set of Faber Castell Polychromos pencils then the 150 set of Prismacolor pencils. Since the Polys are oli based and harder I got lazy about careful pressure and blending. Big Mistake! Now no matter what brand of pencils I use I need to take a few minutes and kinda loosen up my hand and mind so that I'm always aware of the pressure on the pencils. This applies to colored pencils, and even my Inktense (especially) pencils and Albrecht Durer watercolor pencils too.

    I'm sorry to have come to this late--I fell asleep early. (The last few days have been rough. I got a bad sinus infection from allergies gone berserk.) I don't know if it's my imagination or not, but I sense a little grumbling in the comments, but I don't feel they are directed at you, Pamela, so much as maybe an overall tension going around. The world IS nuts right now, and money is tighter. It's just harder to relax these days.
    I liked this video a lot, and wish I'd had it before I did everything backwards. I thought the way to approach coloring was to buy a lot so I could keep up. Got pencils especially on sales, books, books, books, books. But even though I did that, I still more or less followed your guidance. I quickly discovered I liked wax base pencils better than oil based (tend to be cheaper than oil), and certain coloring books come up again and again as the seasons change. If I could add one thing to your suggestions, it would be to strive to have an autumn book, a Christmas/winter book, a floral/nature book, and maybe a jungle or underwater theme book, and maybe a mandala book. Whichever type of book is someone's favorite is going to be at the heart of their collection. I love everything, adding faces and hair, gowns, and fairies and mermaids and cute lil animals. [In other words, I have a lot of books.] I appreciate that you even help us with pencil sharpeners. It's really good to have an electric or battery sharpener, or hand crank one, or you will have blisters (2 right now, from sharpening a new set of Crayola, with that hard wood. I thought I would just sharpen a few by hand. Right.) I forgot I had the Jarlink. Duh.....well, and the TV was on. [I didn't notice any lagging on this video.]
    Thanks for all the time and work you put in to make things easier for us.

I finally was able to get a copy of Johanna's World of Flowers which I have wanted for a long time, because you have many coloring tutorials using that book, and I wanted to be able to follow them using my colored pencils. I do have one question. The paper is very smooth. Do you have a suggestion on how to get it to take enough layers of pencil to make colors more vibrant? The pages are very nice and thick. Can that be turned into an advantage for increasing the number of layers I should be able to lay down.

      @@PamelasPassionforPencils Hi Pamela❣ My request seems to have a little misunderstanding, It didn't really have to do with the art supplies but the technique that you use to give the rabbit the soft texture. I would love to see the pencil strokes you use to give it that soft look.💗🐇

    My best advice is to start with the prismacolor set as it is open stock and cheaply replaced without having to buy a full set. And after coloring for a few years now and wanting to try out a "budget friendly" set I was just reminded that in the long run prismacolor pencils are individually replaceable and for the full set to wait for that price drop in the fall.
    *Quick question Pamela...
    Is your Jarlink sharpener compatible with the square Brutfuner set?
    Thankyou as always for sharing your time and talent with us!❤👍😁

    I wish they would sell the black widows set in full for a better price

      That would be great but I’m not sure that will ever happen. The great thing about them is that you can purchase the sets as you can afford them and grow your collection over time.

    You won’t believe this but I got my 150 prismas on Amazon for $50 back in 2017. Never seen them that low priced since

    These are great tips to talk about but on the flip side I dont see any content creators scaling back when it comes pushing the products that you reviews or links to buy the product. Its overwhelming as buyer when we live in this post pandemic world with all the prices going up and staying up. I would love to see people working more with budget brands more than Prisma and other artist grade pencils that are hard to buy in big set. Working with smaller sets of pencils and teaching the technique rather than the other stuff. I would like to see more people working in the book instead scanning the image most people cant do that. Plus to I feel overwhelm as content creator to just trying to get into the community with very little help from other channels to grow and not copy what everyone else is doing. I just frustrating because I dont think that I am good enough or an impostor in the art community.

      You have to remember how far back a lot of these content creators go, so how much they have had a chance to accumulate. I have seen some people heading more for the budget and/or smaller sets, now that things are getting so tight. However, new books and products come out all the time, and content creators would be remiss if they didn't "keep up" to a certain extent. Pamela is really good about this, helping the budgeters and also keeping us up to date. I really enjoy Pamela's videos because she's so caring and creative, and is always willing to answer questions and give these tips.

      I do always show budget brands of pencils because I know not everyone can afford expensive pencils. I don’t do a lot of hauls on my channel even though I know that content will get lots of views. There are a lot of creators that do a couple haul videos a month and I have kept my supply hauls to every 6 months or so or even more. I love to show new products on my channel but I myself don’t have the funds to purchase every new item that is released so I totally understand where you’re coming from. I do get a few things sent to me by companies and need to show those but I’m very particular about what I accept and turn away a lot. One - because I don’t need more things piling as it’s a waste and overwhelming to me. Two - because I don’t want to share anything on my channel that I wouldn’t use myself. If you look at my channel, some of my most popular videos are using Crayolas. I love my Crayolas so much but still also love my Prismacolors. I understand trying to start out as a creator. If you mean that you started a TH-cam channel, congrats. It is definitely a lot of hard work. I’m sorry that you feel like you’re struggling with it. If you put the work in, then you’ll definitely be successful. I didn’t have any help from other bigger creators when I started my channel but just kept coming up with ideas and creating content. You have to understand the TH-cam algorithm and what your viewers want to see and that takes some time. I hope this response answered your concerns.
