I have a suggestion about the sketches on scrap paper, loose paper...I have discovered creating "glue books", journals that are made up of ephemera/ labels/whatever you want . Often the loose pieces are attached with a glue stick. You could have an inexpensive journal in which you glue stick in your odds and ends drawings. I also use the blank spaces on the page for notes.

I do this. I find a sketchbook awkward and scary to use. I use loose paper for sketching and ideas. If I like something, I cut it out and glue it into a sketchbook. I'm free to do whatever I want on the paper and recycle my practice pages.

I have sketchbooks that are full of images drawn on what ever and then glued them into one collection. No reason to ‘make’ myself use a book. No need for pressure. Just draw!!!!!

I like the idea of keeping them in a box and that way I can use them in a spread on the table, when deciding on a collage then photographing it and putting it in my notes in my phone.

In high school I passed around a sketchbook among my friends. We all contributed to it in our own way. I loved getting it back and seeing what everyone did. Then in my 20s I started a new sketchbook with more adult skill. In my 50s I am doing more sketchbooks, but this time I'm putting pretty art in them for my kids to have when I'm gone. I've got a sketchbook for each of them. I write little notes to them in it, and paint things I think they will enjoy. I also use my sketchbooks to paint small ideas that I can later refer back to if I want to do a large painting to be hung on the wall. Finally, I use the books to do art everyday since I don't always have it in me to get seriously involved in a big painting.

I like your "postcard" comment, because that's how I started Urban Sketching... I didn't have money to afford postcards, but I did have paper and pencil. So, I drew my own. :) Even now, 20+ yrs later, I still find joy in pulling out an index card, drawing on one side and recording my thoughts on the other.

I've been intimidated for years by the instagram type sketchbooks that are perfect. I have never seen a real sketchbook. I didn't even know I could do my own type of sketchbook based on daily life. Great discussion.

I have taken Jason’s classes in Sketchbook Skool’s Spark program. He is one of my favorite art teachers. My creative horizons expanded from participating in the Improv class. His observational classes helped me look deeper at my subjects which enabled me to parse out the unnecessary details while keeping my sketches loose and informative. My confidence in producing art dramatically improved.
Thanks to Jason for sharing his talent with us.

A sketchbook is a visual journal of a sort. My sketchbooks are the place I put down ideas or observations. It’s a place for experimenting and trying things. Social media has made a sketchbook into this place of perfection and finished work, it absolutely isn’t that! They are a place to see my growth as a visual artist. I flip through them and laugh and marvel at how my skills have evolved. Sketching allows me to test concepts for a piece. A lot of time my sketchbook allows me to simply enjoy the act of creating an image out of lines, color splotches, or whatever. As a creative person it helps me map out ideas and designs, as well.

Recently all my artwork has been in sketchbooks, but I had a lot of old artwork from school and college etc that were on loose sheets. I put them in 12x12” scrapbook albums in plastic pockets. Some of my college artwork was too big, so for those pieces I printed large photos of those so that I can still include them in the albums. So much easier to flip through the albums rather than having all the random sized loose pieces in a big unwieldy portfolio (now the portfolio only contains the originals of the really big pieces)

  • @tomyates5486
    @tomyates5486 ปีที่แล้ว +15

Most important takeaway here, perhaps: Don't get stuck in your thinking about the sketchbook. I keep four or five going at once, most on different themes. Two of them currently are loose-page; we'll see how that goes, but one of the things you can do with a loose-page sketch is to leave it some place public. One local coffee shop often has little glass jar bouquets of fresh flowers on the tables. I can sketch one, color it quickly if I like, date it, initial it, leave it-- hope it helps someone's day.
I just took an online sketchbook class with Louis Rossignol (on another art site. Sorry, Danny & Co., but we "onliners" travel around a bit...). Louis' class is all about being VERY loose in your sketchbook, but with an eye toward composition. I'm happy with my finished short sketchbook, as it brought me into a really-let-go, maybe-I-can-still-become-Dali frame of mind.

Wow. Great video. I have way too many art supplies and blank sketchbooks (I keep promising that I'll fill them at some point) but I also LOVE drawing on junk mail, especially those things that come in colored envelopes. And yeah, I think some of my best works have been on the back of an envelope. I usually cut them out and glue them into whatever sketchbook I'm currently using. Oh and I just love Jason's comment: "If it sucks, I know how to un-suck it." Yeah, few lines here or there and some color and I can usually turn it around. I use my sketchbooks to practice, but I think they might be too big. I like them, but they're not that portable. See this little one you're using, makes me wonder if something that small might work for me. Guess I'll have to try.

I've filled a number of sketchbooks over the years. Most of them I tossed out, just keeping what I liked. Lately I have moved away from sketchbooks, and much prefer loose paper. I have some really cheap large printer paper someone gave me. And also a quantity of slightly better paper that I bought a few years ago. I use the printer paper for doing drawings of things I'm really bad at. I lately have decided I don't draw hands well. So I drew lots of hands on this cheap paper. I also had a very old high school yearbook I was going to toss. But looking thru it first, I decided to do a fairly quick drawing of everyone in my senior year. It brings back memories good and bad, and lets me see people I didn't know. As Ive done them, naturally my portrait drawings have improved. The other paper which is slightly better is for things I'm better at drawing.
For things I want to make more finished, I draw on better quality paper. I think its a mistake to draw anything but what you are really bad at on cheap paper. The other thing it's useful for is putting down a really rough idea quickly. Decent drawing paper isn't actually all that expensive, and it's not really possible to make a good drawing on really cheap paper. At some point, I'm fighting the material, and that isn't helpful.
What I like about loose paper is its so flexible. If I want to arrange my drawings chronologically, its easy to do by simply dating my drawings. Or if I want to arrange them by subject matter, I can do that too. I can easily bring loose sheets with me If I want to draw away from home. I just fold or cut the paper into an appropriate size and put it in this really nice legal pad carrier I got from who knows where. It's worth buying a good one, since it will last years.
Lastly I never sketch, I always draw. There is a difference . I'm going to pushback on the idea that its useful to draw whatever is around you. If that interests you , go for it. Draw what interests you. If you are not interested in an old garbage can, it's a waste of time to draw it. Michaelangelo loved drawing the male form. Thats what he drew. Van Gogh was more interested in drawing from his daily life, so thats what he drew. Everyone is different.

Tossing any sketchbook is sad to me. When you pick up that old sketchbook again years later, it's like your diary and forms a mental image of what was happening at that time in your life. Just fyi

I love everybody’s ideas, there are no rules! Everyone does what they like and want and it is amazing how many ways you can slice n dice a “sketchbook practice”

I got a kick out of your mentioning the idea of sharing sketchbooks. I have a five-year-old granddaughter who loves to draw, and uses it for her version of illustrated storytelling. She has a wild and wonderful imagination. Koko has access to lots of different materials to draw and paint with, including a sketchbook identical to mine. A couple of days ago I was doing a quick sketch of her drawing. She asked to look at it, and then insisted that we trade sketchbooks. I was given instructions on what I need to do to color the face that she had drawn. She took my sketchbook, added some color to her hair, and then proceeded to draw in her father and her mother. Making sure she always has materials to work with has been a priority in our lives.

I bought some pad glue from Blick. You take lose pages, slap a stiffer "cover on them, clip them together along one edge, spread two layers of glue on the edge I want bound and VOILA!! a bound book. I also just bought a saddle- long reach stapler to make quick and simple sketchbooks out of. My favorite sketchbooks are ones I make.

I have plastic sleeve portfolios to keep loose work in. I also have separate sketcheers (sketchbooks) for different genres from urban sktch, Nature Journal, portraits, etc. I'm known to take the best out of the sketchers and putting in portfolio sleeves pages, too. Still getting used to carrying a sketcher and drawing whereever/whenever the mood strikes.

Drawing food with labels because logos and designs change. Sports teams, pancake syrup. Stuff changes over the years. Ir disappears entirely.
I admire John Muir because he made a trail and document with drawing. Also the man who started Boy Scouts. Lord Baden Powell. They both drew pictures because cameras weren't a thing, or at least not a common thing.
Even in the Dances with Wolves movie he was keeping a journal with pictures

I have been drawing about ten years and I have yet to "find my style". I'm finding it frustrating. I've become quite good at drwaing cartoon characters, that I view, but drawing my own, or changing a photo into a cartoon/. I get lost. I start my day every day now that i'm retired sketching for an hohur or two in front of my laptop with all different sizes of sketches. I guess I feel guilty when I get complemented on my drawings knowing that it's someone else's work and I'm basically copyiing it! Where do I go from here?

Im retired. Can i sketch everyday. This is weird that im almost asking for permission to start doing art 🎨. Ive done some art out of old art course books e.g pastel still life, pencil sketches, apples 🍎 with coloured pencils or graphite, charcoal still life. I find it hard to see my mistakes. I can see how i can fix things once im finished.
I also think i need to do a course.
