    I went through my pedal experimental phase very early in my guitar playing. I bounced between so many effects before I simply realized I wasn't happy with my skill, and my literal playing. Took a few years and kept a very stripped-down rig, and now I only play with my amps built in reverb, a soul food distortion, and occasionally my ditto looper. My music just doesn't require much complexity

    I like my tuner near the end as a kill switch as well as for troubleshooting. If you aren’t getting sound, but are able to tune, then you know your pedal chain isn’t the problem. I put it right at the end in front of an amp modeler & reverb. I use Joyo American Sound.

      My electric guitar board is a Boss mini volume pedal> Joyo Pipebomb compressor> Joyo Blue Rain OD> Boss DD7 Delay> Joyo Spaceverb> Boss Tu3> Joyo American Sound Amp Modler> Boss RV 5 Reverb> DI Box

      I put my tuner after my drives for pretty much the same reason.

    • @KodyXXVll
      @KodyXXVll 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Why would anyone ever not put a tuner near the beginning? If you need to tune on the fly, as many often do, you have to turn off all the previous pedals in front of it to get an accurate reading. Am I missing something?

    • @andycasile
      @andycasile 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@KodyXXVll If the pedal in front of it isn't affecting pitch or accentuating a frequency that isn't the fundamental, it should not be an issue. Also, most players step on the tuner for a mute more often than just to tune, and if you have something noisy like a fuzz face on your board, it can be nice to have a quick way to mute your signal without any noise. This is why I run mine after my gain stages.

    • @raymart86
      @raymart86 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@KodyXXVll That's a great point, but I don't usually have everything on at once and I often tune a lot between songs. I've just had a lot of experiences especially with other guitar players who have a ton of pedals where they don't have any sound and it's a lot easier to figure out if it's something in the chain of the pedalboard or not if the tuner is near the back of the pedal chain. It's also a good kill switch for noise if the pedal is near the back. I'm not saying it's the only way, but there are times where it's handy to put it there. I've also left on a couple pedals while tuning that haven't really impacted the ability to tune. Obviously something heavy like a chorus pedal wouldn't work.

    Very thoughtful board! I'm also a worship guitarist and have found a simple board helps me stay in the moment more, rather than thinking too much about hitting pedals (other than what's necessary). Not a knock on bigger boards--I love the huge sounds guys get from them--I just don't personally have the brain capacity to play, worship, and think about turning pedals on and off!

      @mattwimberley8958 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Same! I run a Helix at church and I always play with the snapshot mode so I just gotta press one button that says VERSE or LEAD 😂 makes it really nice and simple.

  • @MrWhit30

    I have a massive board at home that changes every couple of weeks, but on the rare occasion I play out I do just as you're doing. Grab at most a half doz pedals I need for the specific gig and put them on a small board. Playing live I like to keep things simple.
    My wheelhouse is pretty much 70s flavored rock, alt country, and Americana type stuff.
    Typically I always have a tuner, a couple of drives, and a delay. I have good Spring Reverb and Tremelo on the amp.
    If I need it I may add a couple more pedals, but only if the gig calls for it. News flash, it usually doesnt.
    My typical go to gigging rig is SG>Boss Tuner>Boss BD2>Nobles ODR-1>Boss DM2w analog delay>Carr Rambler.

  • @taylornutt

    I recently picked up a used NOVO24 pedal train and started slowly acquiring pedals to play at church. I am about 70% complete. I am definitely featuring Strymon on this board where my other board had more Electro Harmonix. After my tuner (Boss TU-2), I am running 1981 DRV - EHX Glove - MadebyMike Dual OD/Booster - EHX Small Clone - Strymon DIG V1 - Strymon Cloudburst and Strymon Iridium. I am running the Iridium and Cloudburst on a Multiswitch plus for amp/Reverb Presets. I just picked up the DIG used and its quite amazing. I want to eventually swap the Glove for a 1981 LVL. The other pedals I still need are Strymon Deco, JHS Harmonic Trem and a compressor or overdrive. I took a gamble on the Fender LVL 12 power supply and it has been awesome so far, with enough outputs to power 12 pedals while charging my iPad and phone. I am trying to buy as much used gear to help make the process more affordable.

    I play for my church as well, leading a youth ensemble incorporating guitar, bass, drums, and sometimes piano with strings, brass, and woodwinds. As guitarist, I originally employed a pedalboard then went to a multi-effects floor unit. The problem was a looper I did not want that accidentally was triggered by me in the middle of a service. That was when I switched back to a five pedal floor board consisting of a compressor (always on), an overdrive, a chorus, a delay (always on), and a noise gate (always on). I am thinking about replacing the chorus and delay with my Zoom 506 II multi-effect pedal (no looper) and adding my booster of tuner as my fifth pedal (I have a One Spot with a five pedal daisy chain). This will allow me to have chorus plus add a flanger, auto-wah, and octave pedal with one pedal.

    Currently I’m running straight into a Keely Comp -> Boss BluesDriver -> ElectroHarmix Small Clone -> Amazon Reverb -> Amazon Delay -> Looper -> amp. I don’t gig so I tune off my phone or in Logic. I’d like to replace the cheap delay pedal. Also wanna add a Boss Tremolo in there too. 😊

    Love the ACS1 and your other modellers? Slap a line isolator on your board after it. (Pinstripe Diso+, Walrus Canvas, etc). A line isolator won’t drop your signal (like a DI will) and allows you to ground lift and eliminate noise running your signal to the PA...

    Enjoy listening to your explanations. Your excitement, while contained, is very obvious and makes it a lot of fun to watch. So far I have a CAE Wah, Xotic EP Booster, BOSS CP-1X compressor, MXR Timmy, Wampler Tumnus Deluxe, Wampler Pinnacle Standard, JAM Pedals Rattler, Behrimger Super Fuzz, TC Corona Chorus, Line 6 M5. Want to at least add a Source Audio Collider Delay/Reverb.

    No sir, YOU have a fantaastic day!
    I love fly rigs, part of the charm to them is boiling down to the essentials and really push the creativity within minimalism. So far, my favorite "small" board has been a TC Polytune mini, Keeley compresor mini, Mythos AU fuzz, Matthews Effects Broker, MXR Carbon Copy, Keeley Hydra, & a Quilter Superblock US. I can do anything with that rig!

  • @SteveH-en8ws
    @SteveH-en8ws 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

    As a pro tip (passed on to me from a famous guitar player you know many years ago) for the best tone out of your gear:
    guitar -> preamp -> compressor -> noise gate
    -> OD/Distortion -> EQ -> Boost -> chorus/flange/wah/vibe -> echo/reverb -> amp.
    Compressor on Cleans
    As for your amp: dial in that "sweet spot" in your amp and the dial in your overdrive/distortion accordingly.
    Keep rockin' and learning!

    I like the versatility of that board! My playing is usually more gain songs 80s/90s rock. I have found the Boss BD2 to be essential for lighter gain, but the MXR 5150 blows me away for heavier tones. May I also suggest the Juliana Chorus if you can get a chance to try it out

    My current church board is Tumnus > Ernie Ball Vol Jr > DD-20 > OBNE Dark Star > JHS Octave Reverb > Joyo American Sound. I spent years with a POD HD 500 and was mostly happy until I started using my HRD again. I moved to the Joyo because of stage volume issues and it actually works really well for me. Had I known I would have bought the Tech 21 Blonde instead of the POD.

    Man this gave me some motivation. I don’t play live, but I always hate how disorganized my pedals are because they’re not on a board. I also tend to use too many pedals because of this. Sort of a “well I might as well have this fourth reverb in my chain in case I feel like using something different”. I think the space limitation of a small-medium sized board would really help me experiment more and find ways to get the most out of each pedal. With that said, I think my dream pedalboard with the. Pedals I currently have is: Boss OC-5 octave > Origin Effects Cali 76 compressor > Origin Effects Revival Drive Compact Hot Rod > MXR Duke of tone. In effects loops: MXR stereo Chorus > Dawner Prince Boonar > UA Golden Reverberator > UA Starlight > UA Astra
    A tad less busy than what I currently have set up, but still gets me all the options I’d really need. Could probably remove the boonar as it’s a very specific effect I use it for but… it’s so good at what it does lol.

    I like the size of your pedal board. Not too big, not too small, the essentials are there ... I have built so many pedal board during the past 20 years that I can't count. Still, when I look to the one I have today, and the effects I indeed use I can say that 95% of the pedals I bought, are today useless ... what I use : a Nux MG30 multi effects (really great for the price for amps and IRs simulation and some pedals as well !) with three "pedals" on it that I use constantly : Noise Gate, Compressor, overdrive (Blu driver) and as real external pedals, a Strymon Bigsky for the reverb, occasionaly a Mooer octaver and a Boss RC 500 for the looper ... no more, no less but Yes that could change, but today I am bored with huge pedal boards and valve amps. If I need to use a real amp, I use a Boss Nextone Artist 80w (far better than the Katana in my opinion, more "realistic") ... all valve amps that I have today, I no longer use them ...

    Blackstar AMPED 1 (out into Peavey Invective 2x12)
    4 cable method so that the Decimator acts properly and can be used to adjust the gating to suit the venue.
    MIDI controlled so I don't have to worry about patch changes.
    What I'd like to know: are there any good battery/power conditioner combos that can fit under the deck of a pedal board? If someone in the bar turns on a blender - you don't want your rig hitting the deck. This would act like a UPS.

    What's up! Let me explain something for ya
    Placing the tuner can often be a mute aswell. Meaning that if placed at the end of the chain, it can be used as an ultimate kill switch. If there's ever any sound issues, hum, or anything like that, a tuner at the end will at least make you quiet - making it easy to pick and prod at the issues

      Longer cable length can greatly affect the amount of signal loss you experience, so the shorter cable is most likely just giving you more of the actual tone of your board/guitar. Also, if you have a larger pedalboard, buffers are your friend!

    I agree, it's very cool to see what you did with a limited space you had available for this board. Also, love that the octave made it on the board. That's a surprisingly useful pedal for worship music. Do you use a volume pedal with this board?

    my pedalboard is just my amps footswitch, a morley wah and a boost pedal. works well enough for me.

    Pedals are either really great or they can be a detriment. After all of the last 48 plus years of playing, I still only consistently use a compressor, delay, and chorus. However, I probably own 50 plus pedals. Right now I gig with a Marshall DSL 20 and a single 12" Marshall Custom Shop cabinet. I have just been using the 2 channels with gain adjustment and I ditched my overdrive and distortion pedals , at least for now. I rarely sell my pedals because I eventually come back to them. We all chase tone, because it's half of the fun!!!!!!

    You forgot to talk about your amp. Yes you have an amp sim but I thought you would speak about the "real" amp you plug into. Now you may have meant that you would plug the board into a "clean" PA at church. In that case the amp sim is your amp. Love you VIDS.

    Is that the order of your signal? Interesting choice to have delay after reverb if so. Solid choices in pedals!

    U r absolutely right when you say that dream pb always changes
    For now I have built 3 PBs
    Starting with TUNER yes TU3W boss
    Then we go to foxy tone box by warm audio. Fuzz of course
    Then a noise gate
    Then the warm audio centavo clone
    Then trex tremster tremolo
    The new korg nuvibe clone of the original univive
    And DM 2w delay by boss

    I literally cannot build a new board without a Browne Protein since I got it. Blues breaker circuit AND an ODR-1 circuit in one pedal.
    But honestly, are you allowed to do worship gigs without a Strymon ? :)

    My tuner is connected to my volume pedal, which is like 9 pedals into the chain, and I've never had tuning issues with the setup. I just turn off any pedals before it.
    My cyrrent setup is definitely way to much for a tour, but is great for experimenting while recording. Its also stereo, for that purpose, running into an ac30 on the left, and a vibrolux on the right. I joke that my pedalboard alone is worth more than my car, but thats actually the truth as I drive an old shitty car 😂
    Priorities...
