- Join Modern Drummer for an up-close and personal experience with Disturbed's Mike Wengren, as we delve into the details of his custom "Pearl Reference One" drum kit. Before the concert, Mike treated us to a special rendition of "Prayer," enhanced with an impressive pyrotechnic show, courtesy of the talented Disturbed production team.
Mike, alongside his drum tech Dave Nester, generously invited us to remain for the main event, offering us a unique opportunity to capture a behind-the-scenes walk-on shot right from the drum set during their performance of "Down with the Sickness." Been with you since the Sickness and dropping plates. You are amazing and such a grounded group. I have a 2006 Pontiac GTO I bought new. Your first 2 albums have been in the 6 disc changer since then.
Mike Wengren has been and always will be my favorite drummer. He was the first drummer when I started listening to metal when I was about 8 years old and when I was in my friends band I made my drum kit almost like Mike's with the double high hats, but I only used one kick. Love Mike and rock on 🤘🤘

Mike's style is just pure groove. This man has rhythm in his DNA. I've heard many bands thorough the years. But this guys rhythms have stayed in my head since I was a child. I'm 28 now.

I remember when I first started playing, and being obsessed with Mike and his kits. Long time sabian player, and his 10000 fists tour kits is still one of the most badass setups I’ve ever seen! Thanks for the early inspiration Mike!
I don't want to take anything away from Mike here, but I have to comment on the lead singer (David Drainman) of this band. I have seen interviews with him and he is the most well-spoken, eloquent, intelligent rocker that I have ever heard interviewed. That dude really can think and speak. The first time I heard him interviewed, I was frankly sitting with my mouth hanging open. The entire band is top notch talent.

I've always loved Mike's grooves and interesting patterns he plays that incorporate those tom polyrhythms. Often it's not so much what he plays that's striking as it is the choice moments where he allows the track to breathe with some brief pauses. Doesn't overcomplicate things and is still cool despite giving room for the other instrumentation and singing. Every time they come through the wife and I go see Disturbed. It's become a ritual with us. The couple times we've had the opportunity to meet and talk with them, they've been nothing but friendly and generous of their time. Looking up at the signed Evans g1 head on my wall and smiling. Thanks Mike and thank you Modern Drummer for showcasing one of my fave drummers!

Amazing how different pro drummers are from each other. Can see his foot technique is very unique with looks like very low spring tension. Yet they all get the job done well with their very different techniques.

I'm an old school Deadhead but I married a little lady that is a headbanger. She has gotten me to see this band live as well as the likes of Staind, Avenged Sevenfold, Bad Wolf and that kind of thing. I still love the Dead, but these kinds of bands really PERFORM for the crowd. I mean like our money MEANS something to them. This band specifically, really impressed me. Those pedals are absolutely sick.

The second hi-hat on the right, brilliant idea. It will def be in my setup, saw some Tama hardware with a lever to open or close it, can be attached to a rack or a cymbal stand, let's say a crash. So practical since we don't have 3 legs, 2 to kick and a 3rd one to close the hat at the same time lmfao

My thing with him is how do you achieve the sound he had for the Sickness album and Believe..and then ever change that kit ever..that was the best sounding kit in music.

I absolutely love Mike's drumming, and measured use of double bass working to always keep his playing within the song. But, and sorry, but the one thing that seems a bit off, especially live is I think he tunes his kit too high. That Pearl kit should sound like cannons going off every time he plays.

Happened to be watching this video again and saw this comment. A little sleuthing leads me to believe he is wearing a variation of the Under Armour Stellar tactical boot in the video. I thought he usually wore Nike when drumming, but maybe those aren't his usual drumming shoes lol
