Todd Sucherman of the Styx is an iconic drummer playing an iconic sound. Playing in the controlled environment of the recording studio is one thing. How do they take those iconic drum tones with them on the road? Well... there's a lot of work involved and here is a peak behind the scenes of how STYX and Todd Sucherman and his drum tech Mark Petrocelli achieve that level day in and day out on tour. We take a look at the incredible Pearl drums themselves, how Mark and Todd like to tune the drums, what drum microphones they are using, and where they are placing them. This was so much fun and the first in many videos from the day!

Great work, I have liked and subscribed, but I'm not ready to comment yet! Link to cheap Taiwanese "Snappy Snares", please!
Mark, it was a definite pleasure to have met you at Yaamava resort. I spoke to you on that Monday and I really appreciated your time. Thanks again…Terry. Please keep in touch.
Thanks for showcasing Todd's Masterworks Series kit under the brilliant care of Mark, and the always amazing STYX Crew...!👏
You guys need a less obtrusive TOM mounting system than Optimount. What was wrong with the one on ELX around 2006 that clamped onto the top hoop?

I had the privilege of meeting and hanging out with Todd when he came to my tiny little city many years ago to do a drum clinic. It was truly an amazing experience.
Man, such a great time hanging with these guys. So kind, knowledgeable, and welcoming!
Chris 'Cookie" Huff. The Man
Whoa! That video was wonderful! Those guys are pros! Not just in talent, but they treated each other and you and your crew so well!
They had so much to do and still made you a priority!
Dude. All of them are so gracious. And proud of what they do.
Styx rolled through my job (worked at a casino with an outdoor venue) and by far one of the best crews that was on the bill for that concert season. Heard a familiar voice in the background from the LD, simply the best. Brings it right back
Absolute pros
Big Styx and Todd fan. So interesting. These techs are great too. Never really realized how much more goes on behind the scene. Definitely a team effort. Thanks for sharing!
Mark is an awesome dude! Well respected in the industry. We worked together over 20 years, and a lot of what he taught has stayed with me all these years!
Just speaking with him for a bit. One could see why. Great guy.
Thank you so much Randy! The check is in the mail!! HA! Cheers brother!
Safe to Say that your Average Joe has absolutely NO Clue ALL of this goes into Each and Every Concert. Very Impressive and Thanks. 👍🙏
Amazing level of details EXACTLY WHAT DRUMMERS CRAVE. Thank you for posting.
Todd is an amazing drummer
The icy breeze ac is so huge when playing the outdoor gigs instead of just fans blowing hot air back at you. That's awesome! Thanks to the techs for taking the time to show us how it's done. Amazing kit, rack, and overall setup. I would love to sit down and play it. Todd is such a joy to watch. Been following him for years now. Definitely one of my top five favorite drummers on the scene.
The Drum Waiter 12:38 is made by Australian company Kentville Drums.
You nailed it. Thank You.
Yes indeed! Thank you! At 55 my mind is starting to go.
Cheers!
Holy Moly!
That’s MARK PETROCELLI….Awesome guy/my former boss!
He’s one of the more thorough gear heads I’ve ever known.
His drum knowledge and knowhow is something to behold…YOU ROCK, MARK!!!
Hey Jason! I hope all is well!
Mark is also a pretty talented drummer in his own right. I've seen him play many times back in our youth in Pittsburgh, we played and hung out at alot of the same venues back in the 80's and he was always such a pleasant dude to talk to, very humble and kind. I'm sure he would laugh at the mention and memories of the staple hangout "Some Place Else". So good to see him doing what he does for one of the worlds best!
Hey thanks! Who is this?
Awesome coverage of details!

Fabulous interview with both guys! So much detail and precision. Awesome!
Love the videos. I geek out on this stuff, even though this isn't my profession. But I'm a musician and love this.
Todd is not only a great drummer and great educator but also a damn nice guy too.
I’ve got number 238 of that first run of Todd’s ride cymbal, only one in the UK!
Hi I'm Dominic in London ex AR for Emi UK. Great meeting you. I'm a drummer and dj all my life. Keep up the threads buddy, love the content
Thanks man!
This guy is awesome. He's got no time for other people's bullshit. Todd is without question one of the best drummers out there and yes you'd be an idiot to argue with him. Plus he's cool as hell too. I'm one of the people that asked about his ride and he took the time to respond and tell me so that's just plain cool too.
Not a huge STYX fan but I'm definitely a fan of Todds drumming, the man is so fluent behind the kit! 🥁🥁🥁
THE LITERAL MILLIMETERS BETWEEN THE MICS AND CYMBALS IN A LIVE SETTING IS ABSOLUTELY INSANE. I'VE SEEN THE CLIPS, I KNOW IT SOUNDS PHENOMINAL. BUT WHAT?!?!
The tolerances are nuts
Band is amazing, drummer is amazing. Would love to hear them one day :).
See you in Casper, Wyoming in November! I honestly can't wait!
Stop by FOH and say hi.
Not a musician, but have a lot of other talents and one thing in common, we’ve always loved what we do and it shows , and with talent comes respect, so cool to be able to see how things work , and STYX , come on Awsome, great video
Super cool vid, thanks for getting us in the know! I love Todd’s playing and his very personalized drum kit and gadgets! I’m sure Mark must be top shelf as well!
Shout out to my friend Mark at Artisan Customs! He always amazes me with his creations! 🤘🏼🤘🏼
Todd is my favorite living drummer. He is so technically precise and still musical at the same time. He seems so down to earth and humble. Ive heard he loves educating and geeking out with drummers of all levels.
You should really attend one of his masterclasses if you get a chance!
He’s incredibly down to earth, funny, and humble. A drummer we can all look up to!
@LilPaulTheDrummerBoy are these on line or in person? I would love the chance to absorb some of his knowledge
Just follow his websites or instagram. Just attended one here in Denver last week.
Worth every penny and got to take a pic and have him sign my drumhead !
But even more important, I learned so much information in those 3 hours with him
Thanks dudes 👍👍👍
That kit is beautiful
Awesome and thank you. Beautiful kit. From Foghat to Styx, Mark P rules!
Couldn't agree more!
Thank you brother! 🙂
I really like this video. Being a fellow drummer for 35 years it's awesome to always learn more about drums and setting up ect.
Thank you for digging deeper to explore how live sound really works. As a drummer for many years, i appreciate how well you covered this story. It is obvious at times in the interview, ie tuning, that the tech got nervous. You backed off and then he opened up.some more. Being the consummate pro drummer that Sucherman is, we get it when one has achieved the level of success. Cant tell ya all bout who it all works..picked up alot of new knowlegde here. Who interveiws a drum tech? You do. Awesome insight. Will look at what else you have in your video archive. Blessings, Ziggy
Hi there. I signed up today, so that I could respond to some comments. Thank you for watching and enjoying the clip. I wouldn't say that I was nervous. When it comes to tuning or tensioning the heads, everyone has their own way and opinion, as to what's the "right way" of doing it. I've been asked on more than one occasion to do a tuning video. And while it seems tempting at times, I simply don't want to have the keyboard warriors telling me what I did wrong etc. So I'd say, I more or less shy away from the topic. Cheers!
Well done!!
This was great! Thanks, my guy! Subd. What a kit...
love it.. todd is one the absolute best in the game.. his kit sounds awesome every.. single.. time. top notch crew too
These Styx videos and the crew have been amazing and entertaining to watch. Total pros and good people. Thanks for this content!
Awesome video…thank you
Every time I see Styx I can’t help but LOVE Todd’s drum sound , simply amazing. I purchased Audix mics for my kit as well If they are good enough for him they are good enough for me. When I was trying to find the perfect stick my thought Process was easy. There had to be one drummer out there with a stick endorsement that likes a stick I would like as well. I knew the stick size and measurements so I looked at all the sticks in that range I could not believe after going through 5 or 6 sets I purchased a set of Todd’s stick. I use Todd’s sticks to this day. A fat stick but lighter because of the maple.
Pure gold man . You got a new subscriber .
Came for Todd, stayed for content and left after hitting the sub button!
💪
I love these STYX tour videos!
Oh there so many more coming
I am a huge fan of Todd's playing. He is one of the most underrated drummers IMHO. He managed to take the music of Styx to a higher level without overplaying the music. He does such little things that add so much to the songs. As a drummer myself I can say we should all strive to be a s good as Todd. He reminds me a lot of the late Neil Peart. The key take-a-way for me is that it doesn't really matter what the tune of any drum is since the sound is ultimately "mixed" so what you hear is a "processed" sound and not the true sound of any drum at all. If you hear the drums unmixed you would go yuck those sound really horrible, but the second the mix is fired up the sound instantly transforms into what you hear on the recording of any song. It's also worth noting that the playback that a drummer hears is also of the processed sound. Some drummers use the "click" track to help them keep time or set the correct tempo of a song. Bottom line is that there is a heck of a lot of technology used today that never existed back in the early days of music. In a way the music isn't truly real anymore as it was back when it was just a few musicians on the stage with nothing more than a few amps, instruments and microphones. I like both the traditional real live music and the heavily processed music. Thanks for this great video.
I remember seeing Todd zuckerman at the 2009 Hollywood drum show. My brother-in-law and I were both drummers and we went to this event and hung out with Todd. Most of the afternoon had a super time. He is unbelievable and a great person as well
Huge kudos to these guys & the crew/band for letting them take the time to do this with you.
Amazing!
For the horn players out there, Mark is tuning to the overtone series often referred to as the harmonic series.
en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harmonic_series_(music)
This has got to be one of the best video's I've ever seen. It should be attached to a new Todd Sucherman DVD.... This was fantastic! (new sub). Thanks and Blessings!
Wow, thank you!
Ever since he took panozzo's place and he was no slouch himself, but drinking dominated his life. Todd re-energized that band and took them to a level that John may he rest in peace would have never been able to take them, and they're so lucky they got Todd as they're drummer. I mean, hes helped take the whole band to another level with his brilliant playing. And it certainly rubbed off on the rest of that band. And if they hadn't gotten him as a drummer, I don't think they would have lasted as long as they have.
Thank you for sharing this! Excellent! I understand this ain’t easy! As a former studio musician and lifelong drummer! Perfection is truly recognized!
Just saw them last week at the Ohio State Fair! Boyz are still kicking ass.
"It's a game of millimetres". A great life lesson!
Wifey calls Todd “Superman” and this is the reason. 😂 He’s so badass and his team is ace.
Beautiful kit and an awesome drummer
Sat 4th row in 2016 at the Volvo center in Charlottesville SC well had a seat did not sit for the entire concert Don Felder opened the show was stage left when Styx returned for the encore Tommy Shaw threw me a Styx blanket that has been hanging over my bass drum ever since
Awesome concert.

Pretty funny how I’m the only one who you need subtitles for. 😂
Just when you didn’t have the mic! Haha

Thanks for watching!
Audix D6 on kick and Audix I5 on snare. I use them always. Thanks for the video!
You have a great channel man! Love it!
I appreciate that!
Awesome! Thanks for sharing. Great stuff!
His drum brand and series sounds very good... plus he is an amazing player....
Love these !
I love doing them.
Thank you for the awesome kit tour! So cool to see Todd’s “office” up close and personal. He’s the reason I switched to Ambassadors on my studio kit!! New subscriber here!
12:49 "Quick...pull it out and lube it!" I don't want to know what that lady was referring to xD. Good shit though!!!!
6:00 Neal Peart used to play this lick in one of his solos, I'm going to guess mid-eighties.
so Many amazing people involved rock on Todd ♥ \m/
Great video! I've always wondered about those sticks he plays, because they're quite large, but now finding out they're maple explains a lot. Big size, but lighter weight (maple sticks are a fair bit lighter than hickory). Might have to try them!
They're prone to splitting, however Todd is a very pure striker, so it's less of an issue for him I suspect, vs 20 year old me who didn't know how to play drums
@@joshalsip8552 Fair! I've actually used maple sticks in the past, and you're right, they are much softer. They do feel good in the hand, though.
Met Todd in Memphis awesome guy!
Great video. Love Todd.
I would also love to know how DOH deals with Todd's vocals when he drums singing with a headset
Ooh. Ooh. I know. 🙋♂️
I side chain the snare on his vocal mic and key a dynamic EQ to dip the snare in his mic. Really fast attack and release. That’s something we haven’t talked about before. Good question.
@@cookie_mix cookie!!! Thanks for your answer! I use Clarity VX pro from Waves to clear as much as I can from the snare, hats and ride. There are some artifacts if you go to town with it tho. So I let some of it go through and treat it kind of like a mono overhead mic.
@@dPoten you know, that’s a good point. I should experiment with that. I am always battling latency but I’ve moved to SuperRack and should try your method if the latency doesn’t get weird. I am side chaining F6 so it could be an easy swap.
@@cookie_mix super rack is cool. Latency for now is not an issue for me. See, me, being the drummer, I bring my laptop and a mini pc as a spare. I use it to run Cubase with click and backing tracks and I use an audio input in my audio interface for my mic. I process most of the signal until it reaches FOH, because you never know who is going to do that on clubs.
I run two outs, for stereo backing tracks, one, mono for my mic. It does the job
@@dPoten Makes sense.
Incredible technology today as opposed to 1977-81..awesome gear, top techs, muscle, and luck!..Let's Rock 🎸!
Thanks for that
Great Stuff!!
i would love to know about the rack system...that must be his own marked riser also.., if the stands, and rack, have all memory locks, that has to be set up 99% perfect all the time....
Maybe one of the techs will hop in here and clarify
I’ll beat Mark to this.
The answer is yes. The riser is marked. The kick drums legs push up against angle 📐 brackets to keep from sliding.
All the feet of the rack and floor Tom’s are marked on the riser.
If we do a small gig on a local 8x8 riser, there is another drum rug that gets placed on the riser with the correct markings.
Todd busted Mark on being 1 cm off the other day so yes, the positioning must be correct everyday.
On the touring road crew side of things, you start to see what can fail or can be messed up during load-in and you start to find ways of ensuring success, not just for you, but also the artist. You may not know what you don’t know, but as soon as you are faced with a new problem, you work to prevent that problem every time and build it into your routine.
@@cookie_mix thanks !!....now what about the heights of the stands /boom arms/ splash arms...are they marked in any way for distance out, proper angle of cymbal etc.?..i'm just asking, i play in a local club band here in lehigh valley,pa. , i use a carpet that is marked and i have all my stands (tom and cymbal, no rack)marked with red nail polish at each joint when i fold them up to put in the bags, so next time we play, i will be able to take them out and extend them to the proper height...it's about 95% good, just have to tweak angle and distance here and there...also the floor, at the different places, where i have to set up is sometimes not level, that means i have to adjust certain things...the other night , my seat area, was in a crack in the stage floor, i was about 2" to one side...lol...had to get a piece of wood for 1 leg to level the seat...you do have to be ready for anything...
@@signals34 making my brain hurt. Ok. So some of the arms stay on the rack but just rotate to fit into the road case slots, the others come out of the rack at the clamp but stay together. The arms lay in a tray in the road case.
In our situation, why make more work for yourself when you can keep as much together as possible? In your situation it sounds like you are doing as much as you can to keep the accuracy and consistency.
@@cookie_mix sorry, thanks for your time !!!

I'd love to hear those drums with a fresh set of Pinstripe heads!
I always wondered how you get everything set up the same way every time? Great video!
Everything is labeled and marked. memory locks are your friend, as is a P-Touch label maker.
What about those mic mounts for 8 and 10 toms? I think never seen that design before. Customs?
Yes. Custom. Machined and plated.
The R-Class mic holders are made by Dunnett Classic Drums and distributed by Big Band Distribution. Todd's are rose gold plated.
What I'm curious about is what effects (rack mount or plugins) the sound guy is using live on Todd's drums?
I know a guy who knows the guy.
Snare and Tom verbs have been in the desk for the past 6 years and have been short rooms for the most part. The toms get a little larger room than the snare but the snares gets to bleed into the Tom verb a little as well.
I play with a little bit of pitch shift across the Tom group since they do have tones to them, but it’s only about 9% wet otherwise the imaging gets smeared.
Last week I said screw it and out Abbey Road Chambers into SuperRack and I’m starting to get that tweaked in for the toms. Got bored.
I don’t use a long verb on Todd’s kit live. Typically the room we are physically in gets messy and I would prefer to keep the precision in the drums since he is such an active player. The mix gets dense enough as it is and I need space for vocals and pitch instruments.
If you listen to the videos that Todd posts on his channel, that all internal effects that Evan uses.
Does anyone know the attachment used for the OH mics by chance???
Btw what’s with the blankets on the kicks? Is it to protect them during set up in case a cymbal or wing nut is dropped?
Or a sound engineer wiring the kit in a hurry.
Yes, to protect the shells during setup.
Very cool video, great insights!
But please invest in some kind of steady cam ;)
Working on it!
You’re not a loser, not if you get to hang out with *STYX!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!* Dude, I’d love to hang out with *ANY* rock band!!!!!!
What I would like to know is if Pearl going to make available the mic clips that bolt on or screw onto the cymbal stands?? I have asked about it before but never got a true answer.
Look at the K&M 217 thread adapter. You need to thread the drum hardware. You will also need Atlas LO-2B on some of your mics. The Tom mounts are 3rd party custom.
At 1:04 you can see what I am referring to.
What kind of college (he kept saying, “Out of college,”) do you attend to learn how to do this? I’d like to pass the info along to the young patients I treat.
What do you mean by your last sentence?
Awesome. You know you have made it when you play drums and you have A/C lol
Great Watch..
Great night
What kind of polish used to shine the cymbals?
Music nomad and groove juice
I saw Todd do a clinic years ago, and was blown away by his skills. I couldn't care less about Styx, but if they came through my town, I'd go to the show just to see Todd play

How in the world was it so quiet up there for this recording? 😅 Too early for catering????
That’s just it. I was waiting to finish tuning the PA so it was muted and the other techs were in catering at the time.
Great content, thx! Those drums are insane, and so is the micing. How about you'd only use one R88 for the whole kit? (Just kidding).
These guys are so nice too! Great experience to watch this video (except for the camera shake, or was is youtube going jittery?)
Yeah first time setting the camera up to hand to someone else and I didn’t turn on stabilization. Live and learn. His shots were great though.
@@RecordingStudioLoser Yeah his shots are great, that's why it's so sad. Did you try postprod stabilization? DaVinci does it.
Yes to many artifacts. We’ll get better
@@RecordingStudioLoser Darn! Well, the video contents are great, and at the end of the day, not much else matters. And something else is very important: your constant trying to bring stellar content to youtube. I couldn't thank you enough 🙂
@@RecordingStudioLoser You also edited this thing to death. You don't have to edit out EVERY pause between words. Christ, you edited something out every few seconds and a lot of times every other second of the video as the guy spoke. Amateur hour. Like watching a Max Headroom commercial from the 80s. It's TH-cam. Don't worry about cutting videos to a specific length. People are either interested in the video or they're not. Let your guests speak like humans instead of robotically chopping and pasting their words together like some kind of AI generator.
