I think youre forgetting the second half of that quote 'Jack of all trades, master of none...but often times better than a master of one!' Dont downplay your skills just because you know people better in any one area. Your unique combination of video editing, drawing, and enthusiastic but reflective fannish joy makes you the best artist i follow bar none! And every video is a joy for that reason ❤

Passion is a buzzword - it's easy to regard other people's work as passion, but it's hard to "feel" passion in yourself.
But you've already taught what it means to be passionate in all of your videos (especially this one and the Elorimanda one): it's taking your time to make a design as much to your liking as possible, because nothing quite hits like a well-done design. Maybe you still don't feel it in your gut, but that passion already flows through the blood of your work, both your designs and your videos.
I've rescued many of my own fakemon designs by applying your lessons from the Elorimanda video. Don't know if you'll see this, but I owe you a big thank you for my learnings!
I definitely relate to "jack of all trades, master of none", I'm fairly decent at a lot of things but it seems like I take a hit in how fast I develop skills past a certain point because I can't keep a sustained and focused effort on just one thing. Learning to be okay with that is maybe something I should focus on :-)

I know this is silly but don't ever get discouraged if you find yourself as a "master of none." The full quote ends with "but oftentimes better than a master of one." !!! Your art and storytelling is really inspirational for so many of artists out here :)

Um, I'm pretty sure they are good. Yeah, they could get inspiration from other designers on TH-cam and such. But they are professionals. With all the help of the actual Pokémon company.

@@albertlewis4903 The vast majority of Fakemon designs are just straight up bad. But if you find a great Fakemon artist that aligns with your taste, it's only natural that you like their designs more consistently than the official ones.
The official Pokemon artists try to appeal to all sectors of the audience with different designs, but they can only include 100-200 Pokemon per game because they're rushed and there's a whole development pipeline to put a single Pokemon into the actual game. So, there's probably only gonna be a few Pokemon in the whole game that you really love.
In mi opinion, Galar was the region with the weakest designs so far, but Paldea is going pretty strong (even with the wasted potential of most future paradox forms).

Everytime he's like "idk if I'm passionate enough" I'm just like, bro you made a whole region, did multiple redesigns, and put a lot of care and research into each design/redesign. I can confidently say you are passionate plenty lol! Also what a great video as always! I'm definitely keeping this in mind when I finally think of my own pokemon region or just character design in general.

Meracostra is actually fire as hell. The posing you gave them with the extra arms gives such a nice vibe that I love. Realized I was really digging it when I started thinking to myself what hidden ability would be sweet for them. Great designs all around, and insightful advice as always, excited to see what the Project Untamed team has cooked up since the early demo.

I feel like not enough people acknowledge that passion can be quiet. It's easy for us to point to the most animated and vocal people as demonstrations of passion, but quiet persistence and dedication are markers of passion as well. This video was great, and hopefully I'll be able to convince myself to get back into art soon so I can follow the advice you shared!

As someone who is a budding Fakemon designer this helped out a lot. I got like 5 regions in the works (too many ideas flowing in my head lol) and ive enjoyed designing them. Im very passionate about it. I do have slightly different steps but it works for me. But this helps with some confidence which tends to waver off and on..
Fantastic job! Tomlock is definitely my personal favorite, but they've all got something to love about them

Honestly this made me feel so relieved. I'm happy you are talking about this. As someone who feels as though they aren't as passionate as others and continuously wonders if I am a "true fan," and or fake autistic for not feeling like I have a hyperfixations as strong as most people. This really hit home for me.
Its nice to know that, yeah, I'm not alone in feeling this way. And just because someone may be more passionate about the same thing you like, doesn't mean you like it any less, or that the art you create is less than theirs.
Art is art, and as long as you enjoy the things you create, and the stuff you are into makes you happy, then that's all that maters.
Contrary to what most people think, you don't have to prove yourself to others if you like something. it's just enough to enjoy the things you like.
I have no clue what kind of specific value this could hope for the designs, but i love the idea that the transition between the middle and final evolutions is a HUGE difference, like a crazy glow up. I might be exaggerating, but I find it reallt interesting because finding a good middle evolution is very difficult. The one thing that I find amazing here is how clearly the designs are focused, shown greatly in the final evolutions. I have no clue what each one says or means, but each final evolution feels like its telling me "I'm who I am" in a human way like when you can a badly written character from a deeper person. Each final form feels like a person that you would be able to long a long, good chat to, which I personally enjoy and love that idea. My favorite part about art is not being a great drawer but still being to love and appreciate it!

As soon as you said the Hahbah region was based on New England, my heart soared! I'm designing a *currently unnamed* fakemon region based around my home state of Maine! This video is an absolute savior for me! I've been working on it on and off for at least 5 years, with many of the designs not getting past a theoretical name, but watching this has definitely boosted my confidence! Thank you sincerely from a very enthusiastic Maine artist!!!!!
As an artist I’ve had times where you start off really enjoying drawing certain things but then eventually feeling stuck drawing that. All I can say is don’t feel guilty for wanting to do something else, I’ve taken month long hiatus’s and sometimes even left it alone for a year just to focus on drawing other things. I absolutely love your style and find your videos relaxing and fun. So I’m happy with whatever you choose to do 😊

I would consider you to be one of the best Fakemon artists I know of and it's wild to me that someone I consider to be one of the best feels the need to preface the video with "I don't think I'm that amazing at this but here are my opinions on it". I'm a pro artist in the games industry and constantly battle the imposter syndrome but you're right, it is kind of comforting to know that people I think of as amazing artists struggle with it as well. There's the assumption that every other artist I admire knows that they're great and that's why their art is so good. We're definitely all harder on ourselves but it's something I'm getting better at and I hope the best for you as well. You're REALLY good at what you do

I learned after art school that I wasn’t passionate about being an artist, I’m passionate about being good at anything I do. Whether it’s oil painting or balancing numbers on spreadsheets, I like applying my unique skills and creativity to different challenges. I like being good at stuff. I like showing off my work… I like looking at everything as my craft.
Just enjoy what ever you are currently doing and don’t beat yourself up for having diverse interests.
i've actually been thinking about revisiting a fakemon design i worked on a few years ago, this video is genuinely such a help with my struggles on it!! definitely gonna rewatch once i get back into the nitty gritty of the design process tbh
I've been struggling a lot with the idea of being a perfectionist. For me, everything I make has to be the best thing i've EVER made. This philosophy of creating is super unhealthy and it makes me feel as if i'm losing passion for making things. I've slowly been trying to come around to the idea of "done is better than perfect" and hearing your take on being passionate and doing things you enjoy is extremely comforting.
I've been watching for years now and you've been a huge inspiration to me and a driving force in why I started my own channel. Thank you for all the fun, comforting content! 🥳

You Are good at what you do. You are by far my favorite fakemon designer! Your concepts and execution always make me wish the Pokémon were real and I could put them in my team in a playthrough. And that is ultimately what you want from a design I feel.
I appreciate the honesty and openness regarding your passion. As a writer (who works veeery slowly) I’ve asked myself a lot of the same questions. I see other writers pump out loads of incredible work and win awards and such, and I feel like I’m just not as dedicated.
But then I remember that passion isn’t just enthusiasm or productivity. I think true passion is the willingness to commit, to keep working even if you don’t feel like it that day or aren’t having fun.
Jack, I don’t think you have any less passion for what you do than those other creators. You wouldn’t be able to see a three year project to its conclusion without intense passion for your craft.
Some passion burns bright, some burns steady. 🙂
The final state of the fire type starter is really cool. I really don’t like any of the official newer starters (the last good looking ones I really like were in Gen 4) and wouldn’t have them in my final team. But if that fire turkey was a real mon than he would be in my champ team for sure.

Great video that hits home! Especially about drawing Pokémon that makes us feel like we’re reliving our childhood memories. The reason why I “quit” drawing Pokémon is because I was so insecure of my art-style. It’s not Sugimori and others can duplicate Sugimori-style so much better than me. However, your video inspires me to focus on my own creativity and my own style. Thanks Subjectivity team for always being my #1 inspiration to draw!

Bleatdown is a hilarious name. Designing a fakemon is all the steps that were listed above, as well as naming it. It does a lot to describe what the fakemon actually is, even if the design might have multiple inspirations. For instance, my grass starter that I've been designing (and redesigning) is called Actilure, coming from Actias(scientific name for most moth species) Act, and Lure. As a Grass/Electric type, it disguises itself as a moth-based creature in order to lure in birds, then electrocutes them in order to get an easy meal. One of my favorite fakemon that Ive done.
I love all these designs, but especially the Fire starter, Tomlock's colours and vibe are just so cool.
Bro makes some of THE BEST fakemon I’ve ever seen, and he makes other vids to! I swear, stick him in a box, with a random peice of media, and some art tools, and let him do his thing for, like, a week, and he’ll have almost mastered the art style! Keep making more, man!

I like how a lot of the advice you presented here can be used for art in general and not just for making fakemon / pokemon designs. Also the designs you showed in the video are great! I do feel like Bleatdown's scale is a bit too similar to kidkickoff, even though their silhouettes and overall shapes are considerably different.
The Gobshot line is my favorite, but I still really like the other ones too.
(Meracostra's design is quite similar to Quaquaval, but I don't think that is necessarily a bad thing)

I actually really love that you went with a grass goat with a football theme, even though I'm not big on sports. But there are football stadiums that use goats to mow the grass instead of electric mowers.
Most of all, I love how you talk about art and design, seeing how concepts coalesce into an amazing finished product, and the process you put into everything you do. It's very inspiring as an artist. I'm (slowly) working on a game, and I can't help but keep coming back to your videos to learn how to better create my own creatures. Plus, you have successfully put Lovecraftian horror and Pokemon onto a single channel, and I cannot overstate how much I love that.
The final evolution of the little crustacean is so awesome... I can visualize it in 3d and in a pokemon game. Definetly hits the "this pokemon rocks" part of my brain

I'm working on a project that involves creature design, I thought I had them, but looking back they were rather bland, I thought "I want them to look more magical, like pokemon!" I used to do fakemon (all be it very bad ones) when I was a kid, so this might just be what I need for my creatures! Thank you!

Have been using your Poketto brushes for a while now. Still not quite sure how to best employ each one, but I've enjoyed experimenting with them. I'm so glad you pointed out which specifically you use for line art and texture for your fakemon in this video. Also, Meracostra is prob my favorite of these. I like the whole line, but maybe I'm biased as I'm originally from New England myself and really miss those rocky beaches.

This inspired me to get back into my Pokémon designs. I think something that you really hammered down as well is don’t only design Pokémon, but present them with emotion and make sure they feel like they can be your friend.

The design on Marracosta makes me want this to be a Gen 10 starter. My first choice. Gives me hope for a decent, powerful bug type. With the way it looks, it could have been either fighting or fairy as well.

This video is really helpful. I've always had a couple of old fakemon on paper in the back of my mind, but I never touched them again cause I couldn't get good concepts and I always felt I couldn't make it work on paper. This video really helped me see what I could do to bring those concepts back!
