- This is Episode 7 of my Blind HCSSF Challenge. Spoiler: We clear Act 1, but not without near death experiences and bonehead mistakes. See something I missed? Let me know in the comments!
Prologue: I've grown soft in my old age. Or games have gotten easier. Either way, I have noticed that old classics I used to crush as a kid seem nearly impossible today. That ends here. I am going to re-hone my gaming prowess against Path of Exile 2, Hardcore mode.
The challenge: Learn Path of Exile blind through hardcore high stakes and repeated failure and practice. I am not allowed to look up any guides or watch any videos. My head will be in the virtual sand as I repeatedly die and hopefully one day triumph against all odds.

I saw you first video, where you died over and over, read nothing. I thought you were a terrible gamer and that I would never watch you again.
Then you started hardcore and I had to look. I meant to comment then about how much you impressed me with your commitment, but I'm lazy.
Hardcore warrior, I don't think there is a tougher way to start. You earned my respect with the next few videos. now you beat Act1 hardcore SSF, something most players will never do.
And this and the other videos the editing great! The skull bit was funny as hell.
you Sir have earned my respect and my sub, please keep up the great content.
Oh, and I don't really care if you keep up the Hardcore bit if you happen to die, I think you deserve to see the rest of the game. Maybe just SSF would be challenging enough.
Wow. This comment made my day. Thank you!
@@deucehammer Just gonna shamelessly chime in to say I have a similar sentiment. You first video was gods aweful, buy you 100% bought me with going hardcore. Keep it up!
I am truely impressed. Hard core blind must be the ultimate challenge.
Thanks! This feels like the hardest thing I’ve done in gaming and I’m only getting started.
1:29:43 you drop a pair of superior boots. Superior items have quality, if you salvage them you get whetstones and armorers scrap that can be used to increase your damage and survivability.
Yeah I miss a lot of quality items on the ground sadly. My tendency to not read.
@@deucehammer I suggest looking into getting the loot filter. It really accentuates the items that are worth picking up.
those somethimes are more important for scrap that a rare item. that and sockets. Look into loot filters, it help a lot
idk how i found this channel but im along for the journey
Thanks for watching! I’m glad people are enjoying the series.
Names and descriptions, the nemesis of every streamer and content creator. :-)
You will laugh at some of my character names. I think I showed a ranger named Beucebow. I misspelled Deuce. 😂
In options you can enable to "Show life and mana levels above your cubes". It will show as a number. It helps to get a feeling for how much life is at certain points. Also makes it easier to relate to both for the viewers and yourself.
Yes, I finally get around to doing this on my witch play through. It helps!
Good morning from Germany and a Happy New Year. Starting my day with this video and a HUGE cup of coffee. Could be worse. :)
Happy new year and enjoy your morning coffee! My favorite way to start.
for Pondering about basic attack dmg.
the basic attack will use the Bows-Dmg. so if there is cold and lightning dmg there, the basic attack CAN be freezing and shocking in poportion to the lightning and cold damage on .
on average, the more cold damage an attack will do, it is more likely to freeze the enemy. (vice versa with schock)
so every skill that will convert dmg into lightning has a higher chance to schock by default.
you can fidle around with Bows with different Elemental damage-types-
for example, if the Bow has High Cold-dmg added then schock arrow can also freeze, because of the non-converted cold dmg.
both types are elemental, so the increased elemental dmg will affect both dmg types.
the combination is key here.
also enemies that are schocked will take more dmg from hits, thats also a good thing for dmg.
Nice! Thanks for dropping some knowledge here. This game is deep and it's fun to learn and get technical with it.
dont forget to keep upgrading your flasks. even picking up flasks you already have and finding ones w better mods, and using blue orbs to improve them. im solo self found like you and even at level 60+ i am picking up the same flasks just in case i find better mods on them. +healing rate and other mods help survival a lot.
Yeah I have been neglecting flasks. I just saw today you can actually purchase a flask stash tab, which was an indicator for me that I was not up on my flask game.
Gz. Finally :)
💪
LFG! Well done.
Thanks! Actually 2 coming out soon 👍
@@deucehammer Not sure if anyone answered this yet... but "Ethical" builds are a meme. To be unethical is to be a build that uses bugs/unintended mechanics to make a build so strong its "unethical"
@ ha! Gotcha. Thanks for clearing that up for me.
You're reading stormcaller arrow's description wrong at 18:20. It does 42% of your regular attack damage plus converts 20% of that to lightning damage.
There's a line at the top that tells you the base damage a skill does, which for attacks (rather than spells) typically scales off your weapon damage as a percentage value. Spells typically have hardcoded damage ranges for each gem level which are then modified similarly, though they also scale with the "+x% spell damage" modifiers.
The additional elemental conversion on skills like stormcaller arrow allows you to further scale the damage based on how much damage scaling you have on elemental damage generally and the specific element a skill uses.
If you click the right arrow just beside the dps readout in the gems window, you can get a breakdown of the actual damage numbers for each skill and the modifiers affecting it.
This is great info, thanks!
Great run so far. Can’t wait to see you tackle act 2
Act 2 is going to be a wild ride!
First of all : Happy new year and thanks you as always for the good content while I'm crafting 💜
To answer a couple of questions from my own notes
Cold --> Stun, Shock : 20% more damage, Fire : Damage over time. Shock stops ignite status, elemental penetration lower elemental resistance. Beyond 0% you need "exposure" to lower it. Each elements has an "Ailment" cold --> freeze, etc
Evasion & Energy Shield is a very good defensive layer combined later on with acrobatics when you are stack a lot of evasions. Still recommended to do the mecanic in case of bad rng.
Life is on item and +2 strength :P That's why using energy shield is better and please for the love of Wraeclast do not stress about the passive skill tree, have fun do your testing and keep learning. That's the mentality one should have playing this game. The progression is awesome to witness.
Thanks for the notes! This helps a lot.
Love your mentality, grats on finishing the first act. Not sure if you'll be finishing the first three before they put out the whole story though. It's pretty hard, but that said, if you do get through the first three, the rerun on cruel will be easier for you.
Thanks! Has GGG said when they plan to add the rest of the story?
@@deucehammer Nope
Really appreciate this kind of dedication to HC and real game immersion, its refreshing compared to all the meta game breaking SC stuff. Somewhat ironic though how well ranger works and that basic attack works, have playthrough'd with a monk and caster witch and was brutal in SC compared to what this ranger looks like 😄
Thx! Yeah that ranger is very strong. So far strongest class I have played. Even playing the game like this, eventually I find what is strong and leverage it. Otherwise I might never clear this 😂
If nothing else this approach really maximizes the amount of time you get to savour your first full play through. It will be a while before there's nothing new to see.
Could be a very long while depending…😂
Re: king in the mists. The red icon means you have to stop moving at the end or you get CC'd. The purple one means you gotta be moving when it ends. That was the only mechanic I had to look up early game because I was getting tilted.
Thanks! Yeah after a few runs I still wasn’t 100% on that one
@deucehammer yeah it's not bad once you know how it works but man that got old fast for me. And that was in softcore.
You forgot again the Skull for the Spirit again like when you play the warrior one 🤣 Congrats finally you finish the act. 1
Yeah. So that last video I edited after this play through. So i had finally learned my lesson after missing it twice and edited the PSA in last video to advert a million comments about missing it 😅
gg!
The point of chain reduce damage is to prevent chain from just making your damage go through the roof... If you could just hit 2 enemies instead of 1 at full power you've effectively doubled your dps. Halving the damage instead keeps your dps the same but splits it between both targets. This logic gets weird when you've got something that already chains a bit, but at the end of the day the tradeoff is clear: do you want to to spread your damage around, or do you want to do more damage with that skill?
Chain is most effective when your goal is either spreading damage out to many enemies, or when your goal is to apply some effect through that skill to set up something that does the real damage. For example, maybe you need a guaranteed way to apply shock to mobs before hitting them with something that does mega dps to shocked mobs.
This makes sense. I have to spend yet more time really digging i to all this
👏👏👏
you can mix and match too. you can get an off hand melee weapon and use a totem for example. or get sorceress skills too
Totally different game at range isn't it!
For sure 👍
Also, penetrating resistances is a huge damage increase. 6% penetration on a mob with over 6% resistance to a given element is literally a 6% increase in dps for anything dealing that kind of damage. If you're focusing on scaling elemental damage, that's a massive dps boost.
This is a great explanation 👍
show that unique crossbow later pls. out of curiosity . exciting to get early game uniques
Perhaps a Merc play through is overdue…💪
Use your skills! I dont think ive seen you use your mana flask yet xD
Haha! Yeah I probably lean too hard on the basic attack. It hits hard and is easy
damm stressing me out again. green == quest item :)
😂
@@deucehammer p.s Gz on completing act 1, I felt that sigh of relief from here..!
@@RustyFlipper Thx! Seriously though, these boss fights are fun.
@@deucehammer first boss from act2 is kinda kinky in a bad way
Yeah you were right. Act 2 first boss video incoming!
the trick with the warrior is.. he just dont dodge the attacks.. he blocks them.
the most attacks of the bosses are BLOCKABLE... and then you are direkt in meele range, since you dont have to doge-away..
i have testet this and it works so smoothly... just block on right klick and well timed ... and it the attack is over just beat them with a stick.
i think we are trained to doghe more often through other games... and the consept of just block attacks is not very found often in these type of games.
This is such a great tip. I started to feel this out but had not tested it. I plan to play around with the weapon sets to see if I can optimize switching from shield to two hander. If its smooth, I can see that being very fun.
@@deucehammerone thing to keep in mind is that some boss attacks are not blockable that way. 1 hit slams will still kill you.
@@Bobbias thanks for saving my future warrior an untimely death!
ok less go
The Act 1 boss is the best fight in the game, in my opinion.
In the future, when you are done with POE2 or need a change, you might want to have a look at V Rising.
While not loot centric, the combat and especially the boss fights are amazing with the need for great timing of dodges and a ton of experimentation with the many skills.
I will check that out! I do love the loot aspect of these games. But beginning to really enjoy the technical gameplay required for POE 2. I was thinking dark souls and Elden ring. I never played those because they looked too hard. But now Im feeling the challenge.
@@deucehammer I only recently started Elden Ring because I also love the learning of boss fight mechanics and figuring out builds to solve problems, but honestly, I do hate the controls in Elden Ring: It's quite obvious that they have taken 20 year old console controls and barely changed a thing.
I love a challenge and usually play everything on the highest difficulty, but I prefer it to be the combat and not the interface and controls that I'm fighting...
For my taste the combat is a bit too floaty and doesn't feel impactful in many cases, but I'm sure that's just a matter of taste, so give it a try. -- After V Rising though ;-)
Chests and other openables can drop good loot, though the chances of white or blue ones dropping something good is fairly low. I usually open any chests I see, and you can use aoe attacks to break pots and other breakables from a distance. Its entirely possible for things like exalted orbs and other currency/crafting items to drop from those.
I must have bad luck rn. Will keep on breaking things 👍
One of the main results why PoE1 never hook me over the past decade is that it has bad melee class design. GGG themselves have recognized this.
Fall in love with PoE2 where finally the melee class (warrior) is very fun now even though I also restarted several times in hardcore SSF. Since launch, slowly made it highest to Act3 but died to … (not going to spoil it).
Happy to hear you are having success with the warrior! I plan to make a return to Warrior someday soon.
Small tip: Is there any benefit of using your basic attack at all?
It does a lot of DPS and gets stronger with enemies who are shocked. I think it’s quite strong.
@@deucehammer You have it linked? I saw it did good single target dmg, but if its better than any of your skills that use mana, thats a balance issue :)
Not sure about linked, but raw single target dps my basic attack way better. Although clearly other abilities do more damage per hit especially with aoe.
@@deucehammer "linked" is PoE1 lingo, did your auto attack have support gems?
@ yes i think crit on 100% health and attack speed. Can’t recall though
Lightning shot cant chain use peirce insted.
Thanks! I will swap that.
50% more freeze build up. if your weapon or skill does no cold damage 50% would give you nothing. since you are buffing 0% off the start. you need a cold skill and it will give that cold skill more freeze build up. combo those w skills that specify that they already add freeze build up for the best bonuses. same w stuff that boosts shock build up etc
Thx! That makes sense. Kinda what I figured but had not checked into it for sure.
unfortunately, I am finding minion gameplay or the occult spellbook way too slow and boring compared to both monk and warrior, not to mention my original standard stormweaver. Even though I successfully didn’t get oneshot by draeven, thanks to hoaridng and stacking life mods, not to say I could spam dots, I think a I’ll just move on and try the crosswbow/bow themed classes
it could probably get better with more later level skill gems and supports, but the minion movement is janky imo.
Im having a good time on witch rn actually, but feel like my ranger dps was about double my witch. For boss fights, reliance on minions kinda sucks so far. Still tweaking this build
damn that fight vs geonor was impressive
Hell yeah! Thanks 💪
