After being plagued with this problem for a long time, the answer actually turned out to be simple. Exactly as Mista found and after I replaced both sensors, still this exact same gauge problem persisted. Even bought a second hand cluster from the wreckers and fitted it. Same problem. Then I found this simple procedure to re-calibrate the fuel gauge and finally fixed!!! Follow this. Hold the odo button down and turn the ignition on. Wait 2 seconds, then press the odo button 3 times within 5 seconds holding button in after 3rd press. Turn ignition off. Turn the ignition on and voila!!! Gauge reading perfectly. Will see if this holds.

I had this problem with my 2006 xtrail extreme. Fuel reading was always off. Brought it to my local nissan they said that the feul sensors needed to get replaced, did the work and still didn't read the right amount of fuel. After 4 visits they ended up changing the guages and its now working good as new

that was one of the best explanations I've seen. thank you
Shame you didn't do the resistance test just to show how to do it.

Wanted to get an idea of the job before taking out my fuel level senders to check them (guage often reads correctly until tank is half full, then suddenly starts reading empty most of the time).
I suspect damage to the sender units caused when a garage had to drop my fuel tank to replace the tank retainers. This video does a good job of showing what you will see when removing the fuel level senders. I'm grateful, as now I am prepared.

I am currently having this issue. How did you go?

@@jordanlewis1163 took out and cleaned the sender units, checked the wiring was good, gave everything a good cleaning with an electrical contact cleaner, and put them back.
Fuel gauge is now working much better. I had a garage replace the rusted through low pressure pick up pump, and they had to drop the fuel tank from the chassis. That was when it started reading wrong. There wasn't any visible damage, so I'm thinking that they either messed up the balance on the float when putting it all back together, or there was some contaminant on the contacts inside the sender unit that was stopping the unit movement - based on the fact that when it was faulty but under half full, it would read correctly occasionally.
Worth saying: be careful of any plastic clips inside the unit, particularly those that hold the pick up pump and float mechanism. The fuel will have made these more brittle than regular plastic. If you have not got the proper unit removal wrench (I haven't) you can use a socket wrench bit and a hammer to spin the unit retainer rings, just make sure you mark a point across the ring and the unit so that you can tighten them back correctly. I did this with a lot of fuel in the tank, would have been easier with much less fuel! With care you can get the units out with spilling lots of fuel everywhere, but have a catch pan to catch the fuel that will be in the pick up pump, and will run off the float mechanism.
