Also nice that you mentioned Oda’s take of the characters in live action. Maybe use of reference in the future.

Go and watch the anime, 44 episodes to watch or read the manga (11 volumes) until you are on the same timeline. Good opportunity to fill in the blanks they had to remove because of the time restraint.

I think that this should have been 10 episodes instead of 8 episodes, mainly for Usopp's sake. With this series being only 8 episodes long that meant they they had under 8 hours to cover all of One Piece up to the Arlong Park arc, and in order to cover that much material in such a limited runtime it meant that they had to basically speedrun One Piece. Some things were fine like Nami being a part of Shells Town. Other parts though were just too rushed though... like Usopp's story.
Like I enjoy Usopp's character in this adaptation, but I don't understand what the hell he is doing being Straw Hat Pirate. In the manga and anime he put one foot in the grave and was willing to risk everything to save his town and Kaya. In the Netflix adaption he shot a single sling at Kuro... and that's about it. With an extra episode to properly adapting Syrup Village it would have served Usopp's character so much better. It also would have given them time to not leave out characters like Jango or Hatchan, or killing off Don Krieg early and leaving him out of the Baratie arc entirely.
That aside though this was all around a great adaption. It's not a replacement, but an amazing supplement to the One Piece franchise. I was honestly blown away by almost everything that this series did and that's because some clear love and care was put behind this adaption. Hopefully there will be a season 2 because I loved what I saw.

okay since I’ve red this thing with Ussop quite some times now, as someone who’s not all too familiar with the anime or manga and therefore the characters beforehand I think I might be able to give a different perspective since I obviously don’t have a comparison so,
I viewed it that way that Luffy on one hand simply sees the potential Ussop has at becoming the person of his storys and therefore living his dream (minus the captain part 😅😂) and that on the other hand Luffy was impressed by how loyal he was to Kaya and the Straw Hat gang right off the bat even tho he was scared.
To me it was like (and that was actually a recurring theme with every crew member) Luffy actually values a person‘s motivations and moral values more than anything and that even tho Zorro is a great fighter, Nami a skilled manipulator and navigator and Sanji again a great fighter as well as amazing cook, those were not the main reasons he recruited them to join their crew but it was their actions and motivations for those actions.
I think with the whole theme of him being inspired by people’s dreams and ambitions as well as the genuine kindness of their hearts Ussop fits in perfectly from Luffys perspective.

@@mrsfahrenheit there was so much taken out of ussops story/character. In the og, he was introduced as someone pretending to be a pirate captain with thousands of followers, next, he was actually ecstatic when he heard that luffy met his dad because he idolized his dad (the live action made him sad that his dad spent more time with luffy than him). Both these told us (and luffy) that he always wanted to go out to sea but he was scared. In the LA, i couldnt find the reason for his dream of becoming " a brave warrior of the sea".
His character development was also very much not there (nami got more development in his intro episodes). In the original, he decided to keep his lie of "pirates are coming" real by facing the black cat pirates himself despite being a coward.
Another thing that got lost in his character development is in the ussop vs chu (fishman). After he feigned dead, he tries to lie to himself, that he fought hard while rubbing dirt on himself to look like he worked hard, until he remembers his friends and what they are facing, he grits his teeth and calls for chu and fights him. While they attempted this fight in the LA, it felt more like he was just trying to trick him.
Edit: not to say that it was bad, just saying that ussop and sanji got the bad end of the stick because they didnt get as fleshed out as the first three crewmates. This couldve been fixed with more episodes but they were limited to 8. Which also means that they had to make luffy instantly likeable when luffy in the og was neither good nor bad.

Season One: I can honestly say that I'm pretty satisfied with the results. I was a little concerned when I learned that my all time favorite anime was going to get a live action series - even after I learned that Eiichiro Oda was working with the people working on this project, I was still skeptical. But after watching it, I can definitely see Oda's work while also trying out something a little different. I was pretty happy with the casting choice, as most of the actors did a fantastic job at portraying their respected characters - my favorites being the portrayal of Dracule Mihawk; despite his limited appearances in the anime and manga, he has always been one of my favorite characters (and I was more than happy to see him getting more screen time on this series). And while I did like Mackenyu as Roronoa Zoro, his portrayal at times came off as weak - I get that he was trying to capture the stern and seriousness of Zoro, but he doesn't really have the voice for it just yet, which is why I think he could have used just a bit more energy.
I get that there is only so much you can do with real people, and you have so much more room with animation, which is why plenty of stuff was cut out in the first season. But I really wish it had at least ten episodes, if it would have helped for us to see more of the characters we enjoyed - such as the battle between Luffy and Don Krieg. And while there were times when the choreography was obvious, most of the times it was done very well. And I don't object for diversity, just as long as it makes sense. I really do hope that Netflix keeps these people on their payroll, so they can continue bringing this amazing world to life.

I was so sad that I had to wait until season 2 to see more of these characters that I actually watched the first few episodes of the anime. Maybe I’ll continue, maybe not. What I can say is that anime shows can be kind of hit or miss for me, I love Attack On Titan, My Hero Academia, and Death Note, but I couldn’t get into Demon Slayer and it seems like One Piece is hitting me similarly. I was immediately grabbed by episode one of AOT and had the same experience with the live action One Piece, but unfortunately I’m finding that the anime isn’t really doing it for me. But that just makes me all the more appreciative of the fact that I now have the live action as a way to engage with the story of One Piece. I’m so glad season 2 has been confirmed! I can’t wait!

So, if you think the costume is too cringe or too clean, it is because you take it as a pirate film in 18 century, but in fact it is a totally different fantasy world. They need to keep the colorful, cartoonish quality of the manga to capture the spirit of it.
Making them look weathered for the sake of realism may not work. It’s what they’ve done to most life action adaptations, dark and gritty, dull and boring.
Also, the costuming were great, they don’t look like cosplay at all because most of costumes in OP manga are already pretty laid back and casual to begin with, basic T-Shirts, hawaiian shirts, etc. the Navy uniforms look good, buggy’s costume looks good. My only problem is Nami’s hair, should’ve colored her natural hair instead of giving her a wig.

Netflix added their diversity crap, casting was terrible, where they could have been faithful, they often just were not, I expect changes in pacing and logistics but not core story.
Buggy is not the joker or a psychopath, Garp is not an cold old Scottish man, Koby has much more backbone and is not a woman. Luffy does not need Nami to save his life.
Luffy defeats Morgan and Buggy, not Zoro or Nami or their "teamwork". Luffy is the hero of the show and the catalyst for change, not a side character like this show made him.

The relationships are never developed, Nami, Zoro and Luffy end up traveling together like a dysfunctional DND party. Luffy is supposed to earn Zoros respect before he joins, that never happens.
Even set design is crap, Luffys home town does not look like a Caribbean harbor, it's supposed to be a country village in European style (including ehm all villagers in the east blue). And somehow Shanks whole crew is now black.
And don't get me started on the camera work, music and other creative decisions. Everybody looks like a dead zombie with their makeup and colorless image.
I'm only two episodes in and I'm already baffled anyone can defend this insult of an adaptation.
