Yeah. I ran out of available manga volumes before Garp was properly introduced, but I still suspected that was brand new material while I was watching it. Zoros actor does a decent chunk in Japan, he plays my favorite Kamen Rider Drive villian from a movie which was a bit distracting but at the same time id watch what they make him do in fight scenes and go oh of course he was in a toku thing
42:10 In fact, her sister knowing is key! Nojiko's tattoos are there solely to make Nami feel better about having Arlong's brand tattooed on her shoulder. Sort of "Now I'm tattooed too, that brand doesn't cast you out anymore"

I just love how the One Piece world has four types of animal-people (Zoan fruit users, Smile fruit users, Minks and fishmen / mermaids), each with entirely different origins.
Its been said before, but its kind of outstanding that One Piece of all things ended up translating to live action better then fucking Cowboy Bebop. Tomorrow Studios taking lessons from Bebops failure possibly helped, but its really in thanks to having a crew thats passionate about the material and willing to take risks with things like practical sets/effects and a fairly fresh cast (the only actors i recognize right away is Buggys who was in Agents of Shield and Zoros whos been in a bunch of japanese films and also that shitty Saint Seiya movie no one saw) as well as having the creator involved. Its not perfect but its clearly made with passion and that goes a long way especially comparing it to its peers where the only other ones id say had this level of passion in them were Speed Racer and Alita. Im honestly less concerned about it not getting greenlit for a season 2 (with how succesful its been the only thing holding back on it atm is the strikes) and more that they'll take the wrong lessons from it and greenlight a bunch more anime adaptations that dont have nearly as much love put into them. Great to hear you guys enjoy something on the Spoilercast!
funnily enough, Django the hypnotist of the Kuro arc actually is on one of the wanted posters Luffy checks out with Koby. There’s also a bunch of other characters shown there that will not appear until much later.

Show runners for any upcoming live action avatar or one punch man should/better b taking countless notes from this show. If not, don’t even bother making it…
There is one other particularly good One Piece fighting game, and it's actually a 2D one by Arc System Works. Problem is, it's a 3DS exclusive that was never localized. It's also kinda' jank, but in that crazy way some players like. Also of note, it supports multiplayer with the 3DS Arc Sys Dragon Ball Z fighting game! You can only pick characters from the game you're playing on, but it's wild that it works at all.
It's a crime that they never mention Down D. Stairs in the show. Jokes aside, I have one minor complain that only affects me and maybe a few people that will listen this spoilercast. So, for the Spanish dub, the actor of Sanji voices himself since he's spanish and boy you can tell because the mic quality is totally different from the rest of the cast. He also doubles down in his natural accent, but I won't complain about that, it's funny. For the Latin America dub, Iñaki also voices himself, so I wonder if they had the same problem.
Matt Owens and Steven Maeda hoped to get a 7/10, and fans gave it 8/10 on average. Like you all ended up giving on average. S2 oh whenever it happens we are here for it.
Like I don't want more of these live action anime adaptations to keep happening because I think they're kinda pointlessly derivative, e.g: imagine Welcome to The N.H.K Live Action versus just watching the perfectly fine anime in its original form. I'm at least just glad this one finally seemed to have cracked the curse of terrible anime live action adaptations, Japanese and Western. One Piece also only kind of works because this was the only way you'd get anyone that isn't already a fan of One Piece to come close to watching that walking 1000+ episode juggernaut in some digestible format.
Having just gotten into Ted Lasso recently, it’s been rewarding to have any context for Dan’s fascination with it and a weirdly welcome surprise to hear mentioned at the end of a One Piece podcast.
Thank you for the double bonus podcast, Dan. This show was a shock to my system. Even the first couple of scenes primed me for a worse production than it ended up. Caring about what you're making really makes a difference. I want a season 2, but would be fine if it stopped here. I know where season 2 will end, and it definitely shouldn't go any further. I'm also worried because there's at least one character in season 2 range that must be CGI-heavy, but after seeing this, who knows how it would be handled.
32:55 2 things about Hacchi: 1. The Fishman who Nami cheats at poker against and gets angry, that in the manganime is just a background fishman, is credited as "Hachi/Angry Fishman", but that's "Hachi", not "Hacchi" or "Hatchan" so they have leeway to backpaddle on him 2. They can include him at the beginning of season 2, or right when he comes back into the story (via flashback to the end of season 1). The season ended with the Marine searching the Conomi Islands (where Arlong Park was) for scattered Fishmen, so we can have one shot, POV of someone floating in the water, sees the Marine search, sees the ruins of Arlong Park, camera pans back, we see Hacchi's silhouette, as he dives back into the water. Boom, Hacchi is established, and we can have him accurately design when they have a more suiting budget for him
I think this was mainly made to appeal to people who've never seen or read One Piece before, because of it's length anime and manga wise. And they also did it without offending the established fanbase. I have heard from a lot of people who have never watched or read One Piece, that they may take up the anime or/and manga to get more.
Late response, I know, but as one such established fan in the fanbase, caught up completely to the manga, I can attest that the show actually KICKS ASS. These are heavily streamlined elements, yes, but in a way that still feels in-character, and honestly, they make it work.
I don't care about the flaws. I had so much fun watching the show............it ruined any reason for me to critique it. I didn't even know it had an animation or a comic. I felt something akin to "happy".
The moment I heard the show was good rumbling across twitter, my first thought was 'Of course Oda gets the rare Netflix W' and my second 'The BTD crew bound themselves to watch something thats actually good?! Lets fucking Goooooooo!'
27:35 No, that wasn’t his plan. His plan was to *attack* the entire town so it’s not suspicious when Kaya is killed. He wasn’t going to specifically *kill* the entire town. There would obvious be survivors. For the live action version, his plan doesn’t make sense because if Kaya is the *ONLY* person to die, aside from the person who oversees her will, they would immediately suspect the person who she left everything to in her will. At least in the anime, he was planning to account for that by having his crew kill people indiscriminately, with Kaya being the only guaranteed target.
As a Japanese who only read one story a week in a magazine 26 years ago for 3 years, my impression was "the manga and the live-action version are about the same" lol.
43:52 This is very much up for debate and is a very very USA thing. In Wheel of Time you have a village that is supposed to be basically alone for 2 thousand years. A diverse cast in a village that is supposed to basically have been isolated from others for 2000years does not make the world a real place it makes it a fake place. Then you have Stories set up in England or other European nations that until 1990s was something like 90% of one ethnicity. Just like if you have a Japanese show if you make 50% European looking and 40% African looking and only 10% is Asian looking it would not feel like a real place it would not feel like japan. When enough time goes by in a place and only a few new people comes in over time the population will start to look similar. A fictional place if you want it to mirror reality should not be super mixed if it is an isolated place because that is not how reality works.
They missed the emotional bond of when each member joined the crew.... They just sorted got together. Luffy saving Zoro? When he was about to get killed. Nami from the fishmen?
48:20 Google "Zoro minority hunter" (only if you are almost caught up to the animanga, or you'll be spoiled of some of his fights). You might be on to something
I think the JoJo movie is cool for what it is. It's a Miike movie so even if you're not into it you're at least getting some cool visuals and a unique look to everything. The way it ends honestly really bums me out that he didn't get to keep going, because he clearly had some fun plans for it.
for me, key character missing for zoro was his pride. as during the end of mihawk fight. luffy cahracter was handled well, if its cringe for others its really just how exagerated One Piece is and notably the localization; in contrast to Neflix Cowboy Bebop's Ed.
Yeah this thing from the moment I heard them in talks I think 4 year ago I had hope. Fans in charge. They went to Japan to see the Kabuki theater plays and get in touch with Oda. He was in control of a lot some of the other people in change of the chapters and social media were helping It was this project where if it failed it was over for live action hope for me. I’m so glad if turn out even better
TheOne-Piece live action show I oddly enjoyed a bit compared to the anime. I watched the anime, but my taste of that show has been ruined. Not by 4Kids, but by the Funimation release. The rating difference is pretty jarring. Also, I ain't trying to watch 1000+ episodes.
Netflix One Piece is going to be fun. Cowboy Bebop could have worked. at it bones it is a serious sci-fi story they need not actually adapt. You change something to make it work in a different media. There nothing that is in animation of Cowboy Bebop that could not be done with CGI and actors. Luffy BY HIMSELF is going to be a bitch. His character and his powers. Luffy as an excitable upbeat idiot will get overplayed we might see Netflix Bebop ED Luffy variant, Stretching powers has never worked in live-action, it is suppose to be goofy and charming but will most likely be creepy, These two points put together results in problem three. Luffy in Manga is always stretching and doing something goofy. One piece design top to bottom to be manga. This was comment I made on the Cowboy Bebop Episode. Somehow they actually hit a Solid 8/10. Luffy Worked, a lot of scenes work, It Just worked. I don't know how One Piece made a smoother transition than Cowboy bebop.
44:30 No, that’s false. First off, there have been trans characters since Impel Down, when Ivankov was introduced, literally changes peoples sexes. That was *YEARS* ago. Second, those “trans characters” you’re referring to, at least one of them is not actually trans because she identifies as a *specific person* (which the trans community said is a no no), not as the opposite gender. Plus, Oda drew her with all the women, confirming she’s a woman.
Pirate Warriors is pretty great. 3 was better than 4 for grinding and losing time in, 4 plays better and looks better. They also absolutely spoil everything, and dont do it as nicely as those Naruto storm games.
you've seen all the rurouni kenshin live actions but you don't recognize mackenyu, the actor who played the villain einishi in the final movie? he is the one who plays zoro haha (well to be fair, he looks a lot different in that movie)
I think they bring osctpus man back if there flashback showing along being corrupted withal time as by and once he his leader is gone he leaving and adopts came and runs his food stand
it aint a lazy 1:1 adaptation, and the liberties to change the pacing but same direction still repsects the source and why it stil lretian its entertainment adn watch value regards already seen the anime. we need more adaptations where their creators are on board during the production of the film/series.
Cannibalism only occurs in the same species, not anywhere else on the phylogenetic tree. Hatchi is a fishman, so technically not even a cephalopod. Also, an octopus making Takoyaki is funny. That’s probably Oda’s reason. (There are also recorded incident of octopodes eating each other due to their solitary nature, particularly unlucky males after mating.)
If you clicked Buggy on tumblr he would change the dashboard background to wanted posters and "we're watching you' posters It was fucking freaky to see that half asleep at 3 am They then changed him trans skull and cross bones cause so many people did not like the fucked up pirate clown just being..... there

It’s doing great but it’s also expensiveAF. They could say it did it’s job. Got people into the franchise and not renew. 🤷🏽♂️
Renewed
The Stranger Things thing at 46:10 is super true btw,
Small detail, Luffy and Usopp are 17 at this point.
One Piece Unlimited Adventure (US ver.) and Cruise (JPN Only) on the Wii are really good. Also, heard One Piece Odyssey is good RPG.
There's this One Piece Fighting game called "One Piece Fighting Path" but it only available in China. The gameplay looks cool
48:20 Google "Zoro minority hunter" (only if you are almost caught up to the animanga, or you'll be spoiled of some of his fights). You might be on to something
The ps2 arena fighters are pretty decent they're very similar to Power Stone
I think the JoJo movie is cool for what it is. It's a Miike movie so even if you're not into it you're at least getting some cool visuals and a unique look to everything. The way it ends honestly really bums me out that he didn't get to keep going, because he clearly had some fun plans for it.
As you asked, I don't give a shit about Stranger Things
for me, key character missing for zoro was his pride. as during the end of mihawk fight.
luffy cahracter was handled well, if its cringe for others its really just how exagerated One Piece is and notably the localization; in contrast to Neflix Cowboy Bebop's Ed.
Yeah this thing from the moment I heard them in talks I think 4 year ago I had hope. Fans in charge. They went to Japan to see the Kabuki theater plays and get in touch with Oda. He was in control of a lot some of the other people in change of the chapters and social media were helping
It was this project where if it failed it was over for live action hope for me. I’m so glad if turn out even better
the japanese voices are much better
zoro rarely ever says luffy, he almost always uses the word for captain
TheOne-Piece live action show I oddly enjoyed a bit compared to the anime. I watched the anime, but my taste of that show has been ruined. Not by 4Kids, but by the Funimation release. The rating difference is pretty jarring. Also, I ain't trying to watch 1000+ episodes.
okay one piece is one of the best things Netflix has ever done but I was in Spain all last year and they fucking LOVE stranger things
Kris has no grasp on the Mainstream. He really believes he is in touch with most people
Meh
7:39 No, it’s not the same narrator
Just pay the damn license fees for the main theme music at least lol. They're already dropping hella money as is. A tad more won't hurt lol
They have rights to Manga, not the anime. Thats a whole lot of Toei animation and stuff...while its easier to be on board with the author himself.
What’s tuff is the budget and cgi like man does it get crazier, like there going to need universal studios to collaborate 🦖
The music is awesome tf
Pirate Warriors is pretty great. 3 was better than 4 for grinding and losing time in, 4 plays better and looks better. They also absolutely spoil everything, and dont do it as nicely as those Naruto storm games.
yeah, Chilean here and I havent finish stranger things, not even Merlina...
you've seen all the rurouni kenshin live actions but you don't recognize mackenyu, the actor who played the villain einishi in the final movie? he is the one who plays zoro haha (well to be fair, he looks a lot different in that movie)
Garp's luffy's fight makes no sense to me.
Zorro got lost... he's in jojos as well
So, I love Hachi, but I'd like an explanation by Oda as to why he cannibalizes octopuses
I have never watched stranger things and I have 0 interest to watch
It's a pretty fun show.
German here, people care about Stranger Things
If you clicked Buggy on tumblr he would change the dashboard background to wanted posters and "we're watching you' posters
It was fucking freaky to see that half asleep at 3 am
They then changed him trans skull and cross bones cause so many people did not like the fucked up pirate clown just being..... there
Isn’t there rumors about an up and coming Naruto live action movie 💀
What the f they smoking the music is great.
i mean there are plenty of good netflix shows they just aren't adaptations
