That remark alone showed that she was in over her head. Faking it to get an appointment with a buyer is a good trick. Faking it when you need to quickly scale up production to meet a large order on time and to specification... that's how you destroy your business - and more immediately, your credibility.
Sara's whole comment before she declared herself out was based on her "fake it until you make it"
I think she is just a bit naive and needs some more experience with her only being 25. But I think she definitely has the qualities to become a successful entrepreneur.

I always struggle with these vegan/raw/chemical free and so on treats because they pretend to be healthy food when it's really not. If you want a healthy treat eat a banana.
Or you can bake a vegan treat yourself using about 4 ingredients, and then you know exactly what's it in

People are being a bit harsh on her I think. Plenty of entrepreneurs go into the den dressed appropriately for their product/sector so while it's not uber professional putting a suit on for the sake of it would feel disingenuous. She wasn't overly cocky, and the comment from Sara should keep her grounded.
All in all, she's 25 and has started a business and is pushing it hard, deserves credit for that. Not my sort of thing as a consumer or investor but fairplay to her, she has drive
I think this could work. She should market it towards people with appetite/gaining weight issues. Usually meal replacement foods aren’t vegan, hers are, which could become popular among the vegans. I remember it was hard for me to eat at one point and I would drink meal replacement shakes and would hate it.
Another issue is her appearance with some, yes, which shouldn’t really matter, but humans will be humans. Her attitude isn’t the best either, something exudes falseness about her (may be nerves), which people can usually sense. An investor wants to know all the details of the business and about that person, it’s their money they’re putting on the line.
HOWEVER, I don’t see myself up there so I’m not going to assume it’s easy or judge. Good luck to you girl, I think you honestly have a shot. Read some of these comments from others so you can learn from them. Don’t brush them off, but instead remember these are most likely going to be your customers and they’re giving you feedback. If a lot of comments are saying the same thing there may be some truth to it.

The idea is not bad. The child running this is not aware of her shortcomings. Her overconfidence with social media is a shining example of how clueless she is. Two statements made by dragons expose her overconfidence. (a) Peter said 'fake it till you make it' - yes she had absolutely no marketing strategy or experience and (b) Touker pointed out she has no working capital to buy inventory or for marketing. Hence her modest goal of 300k revenue is ridiculous. An idea is just an idea. But it still needs execution. She has to learn how to plan and operate a business. Until then she is just another girl with an ambition.
Running a social media campaign the way she explained it has less than 10% chance of succeeding.

I make things like this for my auntie and her buddies in the nursing home. A lot of them have issues keeping on weight (especially post covid) and the typical way the nurses try to address that is with Ensure shakes which are revolting and full of chemicals

Also calories shouldn’t be an indicator of ‘healthy’. A lot of healthy food is high in calories. Plus, the more muscle you have, the more calories you need. So active, healthy people need more calories daily because their body uses more energy.

The Dragons were clearly told and coached to be much nicer after a certain point. Even the bad pitches now are treated quite well compared with the early series.

Shocking to hear how much praise Evie got from the Dragons when it is very apparently she is poorly prepared for the pitch and doesn't understand her market. They even responded positively to her admitting she has been actively lying to get herself business deals, or in her words "fake it til you make it".
To be fair, if it's difficult to get an appointment with someone, then for her to lie and say she has an appt and then to get an order was really clever.

Yh... You don't understand business if you take issue with her strategy to get into deals with the supermarkets, it's easier and effective and like they said, everyone does it.
I think they were taking it easy because of how young she is. Giving her credit for trying and tbf doing a lot better than I lot of adults do. But it felt very teacher student and not sales pitch.
Women always complain, but if you've watched A LOT of Dragons den and Shark Tank it's impossible not to notice that atracttive young women absolutely get a softer treatment

There's one in Wales by me that does them. They've only recently launched vegan but they've always been gluten free. Gower cottage brownies. In fairness they're actually really good when most free from products are never as good as the real thing.

I don't think she'd have noticed if there was no product behind her. Whilst it's important to have a great person behind a great brand it's not necessary... having a great product behind a great brand is though. The amount of issues with the product and she still backs it because she believes she's far more important than it, even with supermarkets rejecting it and sales not growing. Needs a reality check i'm afraid, she's heard how amazing she is way too many times and has lost focus on what's important. Nothing wrong with confidence, not much wrong with a bit of cockiness, quite a lot wrong with arrogance though so Sara's comment was the best one from the dragons. Hope she takes it on board.

Reality is… she’s aiming at the wrong market. This food is perfect for athletes, long distance runners and cyclist who don’t want gels.. or something a bit diff from a pack of dates.
It’s about 500 calls per 100g. So perfect for replenishing calories on a long cycle ride.. but if your looking to eat 4 packs of 100g.. it may be a bit pricey

I’m an amateur in terms of audax and I’m doing 6 to 10 hours. Your look at distances 100km ++, experienced people doing 1500km multidays
Personally I’m doing 6 hours for a medium ride.. a long one for me would be 12..
I’d need to carry a days worth of food… and another 2 to 3000 calories to replenish

The weight of carrying a days with of food on a bike is easier in these high density calorie filled snacks

Companies House for small limited companies only show value of assets (called the balance sheet), not sales, revenue or profit (called profit and loss account or income statement) because of privacy concerns. However public opinion is changing and there is legislation going through parliament to change that, to make companies' finances more transparent to the public because you don't want to go into business with a company that could have a cash flow problem.

An avocado has on average 240 kcal so I don’t think its ridiculous. You only gain weight if you aren’t actively burning enough calories. Consuming less calories is just unhealthy and negatively effects your body’s function. So calories shouldn’t be the sole indicator for ‘healthy’ food.
Calories in, calories out, that's all that matters, it's all math in the end, all the diet plans be damned. Vegan stuff has to have lots of calories because it wouldn't taste good otherwise. Mostly in the form of oils and nuts and seeds. At least it's very protein-rich. I didn't see the nutrition label, but I'm _assuming_ there is lot of protein.... if not then they are empty calories and empty calories are bad. Calories chock full of protein is great though.

The dragons invest in businesses that are already full formed and just need a cash injection to expand. Evie's business is most definitely not fully formed - she didn't even bring prototype packaging into the den for all her products.
If she isn’t making enough profit to grow the business then yeah that’s a reasonable concern. It means it has no natural growth out of demand which is a big red flag.
Her response was to “fake it till you make it” when asked how she was going to manufacture extra product for larger companies.

It annoys me when manufacturers and dragons think that high calories are bad for everyone. I have an overactive thyroid and have to eat loads of calories so I don’t lost weight. I wish they’d stop pandering to obesity rather than addressing the problem which is self discipline at the end of the day.
