    This song has literally saved my life more than once 💙

    • @Captain_Calcium
      @Captain_Calcium 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      You saved your own life, I totally feel what you're saying but if a song makes you realize something that you may not have before and gave you the inspiration to keep pushing and stay alive because you know there's something more that this life has in store for you and you wanna keep going to discover what that is, for you to find and make your own meaning for your own life, because yesah by some weird chance the universe we live in sparked and made all things. If none of us were here, no one would notice. So it's correct that life has no meaning, until you give your life it's own meaning, because knowing that we're only here by some weird chance, some freak accident of physics, makes existence that much more special and beautiful, let alone the fact that we're all here on this planet able to create all things there are on this world for all others to marvel at, the fact that we feel all the things we feel like love and peace and happiness and spiritual connections to the universe and existence even if you're not religious at all like me, and the feeling you felt when you chose to stay here and prosper is made that much more beautiful knowing that there was probably a 99.99999% chance that this universe could have never met the right conditions to create life on this planet, let alone humanity and that we've actually managed to struggle on until the point where we are now where it's more peaceful and beautiful all around this planet then it ever has been in our history, and you and me and everyone who's alive right now is lucky enough to be alive in a time like this where we don't have to struggle evens fraction of what all our ancestors had to. So it wasn't the song that saved you, it was just the catalyst that helped you to save yourself, it's up to you how you take the song cause it could be talking about being patient for something completely different then the way you're interpreting it, but it was you who realized that it's not worth taking your life because consciously or unconsciously, you knew there's something more for you in this life, it might take what seems like forever to create you're own meaning one's own life and find what it is that you're meant to do in this world, but you realized that you have to be patient to find that something you're meant to do, and you STILL could have quit and given up after realizing whatever it was that you realized thanks to this song, just completely defeated by this seemingly cruel life. But you saw more in store for yourself and used your own strong willpower to choose for yourself to stay alive and figure all that out. Give yourself more credit, music can be an amazing tool to help you realize certain beauty's of life and being. But we're from a very strong species of strugglers who endure massive hardships throughout our lives, and get rewarded by life itself when we're strong enough to keep pushing through because we'll always deal with all the hardships and sadness and hatred and ll other negative things of the world our whole lives, but we'll also always receive an even greater amount of peace and happiness and love and all other positive things. And since you're like me, you have struggled hard enough to almost give up completely, and that just means you get rewarded SO much more than all the other people whom haven't struggled nearly as much and you get to feel far more peaceful and happiness and love when you receive those things because you have all the harder life experiences to compare to all those beautiful life experiences with. Keep enduring, keep loving and change the world around you, and you're a human like the rest of us, so I know you can do that if you just keep going and. never. Give up. I give you my absolute best wishes in your life to come fellow struggler. (Im sorry about this long ass message but some people just need to hear stuff like this in their lives and I thought you'd appreciate it lol if not then oh well, I like to write anyways and all this I typed out is gonna help me out with the comic I'm writing so at least I didn't waste my time either way lmao😂)

    I was raised Baptist. By the time I found Tool during my High School days I didn't much care for the church goers I ran around with. I didn't go full Atheist, however I didn't lose a faith in higher power. This song was a go to for when my father got sick and slowly starved to death. My mother drank her self to death. My brother got ALS. All this happened within the same five years one on top of each other. As the youngest I was the go to caretaker. Patients was paramount to all the care. Even though this song was from my early days I still went to it for comfort. I can see the religious undertones but I never associated it with the bible. Just goes to show how we can all interpret things different I was humbled by just hoe patient I had to be with each of them. Lucky for me we all still loved each other despite the difficulties before they passed. Long ass five years though. Good Lord.

    Also, guys not EVERY Tool song is about Maynard’s mom. If you dig a little deeper in interviews, youll find out Maynard was having a lot of problems with the band (Adam Jones - Tool’s guitarist in particular). I think this song is about having patience with the band and its tedious process. The song Schism is also about his problem with the band

      Maynard seems to have an issue with Tool in general. He doesn’t like how slow they’re writing process is, which is why there have been three Perfect Circle albums and the entire Puscifer discography since Lateralus came out. Tool does not fulfill his need to be creative.

    • @mineonlyhooves
      @mineonlyhooves 6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Jeffery Tucker im not sure, but MJK has vented his frustrations with the band’s process in multiple interviews (Joe Rogan’s last interview in particular). I only speculate his problems with Adam because they dont follow each other on social media, and he was the only member of Tool not to join Maynard on his big 50th bday event. Seriously, every musician Maynard’s ever worked with was there except Adam, thats very peculiar to me. Ive just heard rumors through various sources he and Adam are VERY different people and i just don’t really see them getting along

    Its funny how you (Sori) talk about Vin diving in to stuff in an almost obsessive way. Its evident with how much researches stuff like the Behemoth stuff, and these tool songs. I definitely get that, I am the same way. Like back when I was wrapping up in college and still playing in bands, I wanted to get a custom shop Jackson (this was right before fender bought them). I probably spent months learning everything I could about how guitars work. Tonewoods, what complements certain styles, pickup choices and configurations. You name it, I learned it. That guitar is my baby, but I certainly spent a inordinate amount of time deciding exactly what I wanted and then I had to be PATIENT (symmetry, gotta love it) cause it took almost 2 years for it to be built and finished.
    Now this year I had to buy a new car and the same thing, tons of research, finding everything I could. You could say its obsessive, but I don't think its a bad trait at all to want to be as knowledgable as you can about something you are passionate about. So its great in my opinion that Vin takes this stuff seriously to the extent he does, I think it makes the video's that much better than anything else out there in regards to dissecting a song.

    Interesting interpretation. I always took the song to be about his struggle to keep it together as an artist. The fighting and squabbles that come with the long-term relationship with bandmates. Being on the road all the time, away from family. The vultures on the business side of the industry constantly hindering you and trying to feed off you. All these things kind of wearing him down like a “vampire”.
    He wonders if it’s even worth it anymore. But his “desire to heal...the damaged and broken [listeners] met along...the tedious path” he’s chosen outweigh his doubts. So he’s “keeping faith”, and being “patient”.
    Just my two cents. You guys are incredible as always. I can’t tell you how much I’m enjoying this series. We really appreciate all your hard work and effort. Keep it up!

    I m totally amazed at this different scenario that you guys are interpreting from this song. I have always thought it was straight up a very invested caregiver arguing with their own mind.
    relating it to my life, I am the patient, my husband the caregiver. So I see myself as being the emotional vampire, and I can totally see how sticking with me through both physical and mental health issues is tedious, a test, draining..but I have never stopped working towards getting better, and he sees that, so that's what's keeping him going, otherwise I wouldn't blame him for walking out.. heck much of the time I cannot for the life of me understand why he stays.
    It's funny though, he's never said anything like this, ever mentioned giving up, ever put clauses, it's all my own feelings projected.
    I see it though.. I see how this is potentially a back and forth, 2 perspectives.
    Great review.

    The Patient is about record labels, not his mom as far as I've read and maybe he even said so before a performance a few times? Like it wouldnt be worth the draining sacrifice that it tskes to make such perfectionist self-serious music and deal with shitty vampiric record execs if not for the loving embrace of fans and listeners etc
    TOOL have talked a lot about the ethos of their music being about providing nothing more than a conduit for introspection and healing for the listener which also jives with this lyrically

    I know it really doesn't fit the lyrics, but I remember on my first listen to this song it gave me a very distinct impression. I thought the song was Maynard talking about his relationship with humanity or maybe even spirituality in general, and he is using the metaphor of a sick or dying "patient". Just a few thoughts to toss around maybe.
    Anyway, great as always guys! Can't wait for more. And just some suggestions if needed:
    Two of my heavier favorites: Bottom or Crawl Away both off the Undertow album.
    Amazing all around (didn't know how else to word it lol): Pushit or Eulogy both off of the A/Enima
    Blow your fucking mind amazing: Pushit live off the Salival DVD, or maybe even their cover of Zeppelin's No Quarter.
    Cheers!

    I interpret this song as the perspective of one's awaiting response from divinity, or at least a justification for being on a path of seeking divinity.
    "A groan of tedium escapes me, startling the fearful."
    Basically the sigh of frustration of someone about to give up on the path causing others (the fearful/God-fearing) to take notice and become concerned.
    "Draining patience, drain vitality. This paranoid, paralyzed vampire act's a little old."
    The inability to quench an endless thirst whilst doing everything in your power to seek it is draining. (Quick note: the inclusion of the apostrophe in the word "act's" makes all the difference).
    "If there were no rewards to reap / no loving embrace to see me through this tedious path I've chosen here, I certainly would have walked away by now. If there were no desire to heal a damaged and broken man along this tedious path I've chosen here, I certainly would have walked away by now."
    If it weren't for the positive encounters along the way, those met along the journey, and the connections and ability to find fulfillment in helping each other along the path, an easier path might have sufficed.
    I've never tried to put this song into words before, but to summarize, I would say that a path of faith isn't always an easy one, and one is not always confident about the choice to take it.

    I truly think the straight through listen is where Sori was in her element and began to love Tool the way so many do, but this is yours and I hope you are coming to that place too. These separate perspectives make these so enjoyable to watch because of the balance you give each other. Thank you!

    Though I was raised Lutheran, I was also raised with different styles of music growing up. As the years went on my listening taste grow more heavy and intense. I still believe that there is a God, but don’t follow the word as much, but then again I heed to those principles naturally because of who I am, not because of God or the Devil, but I know both exist.. and I have atheist friends, go figure... This also go’s with the music I listen to. I pay attention to the music more then the lyrics. I think it has something to do with me being a guitar player, but you guys are very interesting in how you dissect the lyrics.
    Keep doing what your doing...
