MJK never gets enough respect for letting the music breathe. He is arguably the best metal/rock/whateverlabel singer ever but, he never tries to take over a song. Eddie Veder is awesome for his style but if you listen he never shuts up, he goes on and on and on and on never letting the music stand in front. Much respect Maynard!

@David Hannigan what people don't get about tool is the brilliance of the song construction. Yes, they will go all in on a riff for multiple measures but there is a purpose to it. It's sets the stage for the music to become atmospheric when Maynard sings, so the vocals and the message stand out. I understand that some people have that "ADD" quality to them and need to jump to that next thing immediately. Tool just isn't the band for them.
This is even more important, in that Justin, Adam, and Danny write the songs completely free of a vocal part. Once they are complete, Maynard lays over a melody. As a separate process, it would be even easier to overshadow.

I like to interpret this song in a two-fold fashion: 1) Maynard once again railing against hypocritical leaders, especially spiritual/religious ones, and 2) the crowd's desire to elevate and then consume their own idols.

Most of this album is dedicated to Bill Hicks from my understanding. He was a friend of the band and it was released not long after his passing, for instance the song aenima was clearly based on his stand up bit called Arizona Bay. Eulogy could very well be based on L Ron hubberd but as Bill Hicks loved to pick on religion in many of his bits, I think this song is dedicated to him
Got to see this at one of the Tool music clinics. Always thought it was all synth, but the "plinking" in the start is Adam on the guitar. Breathtaking to see it performed live at the clinic and then live the next day at a festival.
Their songs are open for interpretation, that's one of the awesome things about Tool. There is no denying this is one kick ass song!
This song got me through my Father's Passing , he talked a Lot but I Love his stories, I MISS HIM SO fn MUCH ! Actually all Tool got me through it,my Dad was anti Church as well ,we Believe from our Hearts not from under a certain roof,I worshipped Tool ,I'm a Mother of 3Son's, it was amazing that Tool came to Hamilton Canada right after my Father's death so I Took my Son's it was Phenomenal

After alot of digging and prying I believe this song was written about his step father who was a pastor ... Kinda along the lines of "Judith" but alot darker because apparently his step father was a strict parental figure. Alot of pent up aggression for sure here

I always looked at the cross reference as being a play off of the Christ figure trope of literature.
And the martyr as being more akin to the modern vernacular, of a person who dies for a cause or ideal, and their death serves as a catalyst that inspires others to action.

This is one of my favorite TOOL songs
I always have interpreted it to being about Bill Hicks. He was always on a stage when performing “above a crowd” he yelled a lot when he was doing his stand up. He always had something to say about what was going on in the world today. But I’m probably completely wrong. I’m the only person I’ve ever talked to that has said they interpret it that way.

Ron Hubbard's name brought up which would make sense. Especially since they've mentioned L. Ron Hubbard in 2 other songs.
Seems a little angry to be about Hicks...someone they clearly respect and agree with. "Would you die for me? Don't you fuckin' lie!" They would never talk to the late, great Bill Hicks this way. L. Ron makes much more sense to me...or maybe even the big J.C.?

I think sometimes people get too specific with finding a meaning. Though there may be a specific inspiration, this song is simply about martyrdom.
There's also some language that suggests the military, a life that Maynard has experienced. ("Don't you step out of line!")

The song is about Bill Hicks. The booklet that comes with the album has a picture of him and Maynard that says "another dead hero." The song was written shortly after Hicks' death. The song includes a lot of dark humor on Maynard's end.

Eulogy's "Spiritual" adaptation is a conversation between Maynard and his ego. His quest for enlightenment was always met with his ego saying "When it was time, I'll die for your enlightenment." Obviously the ego only cares about self-preservation; so he is tearing himself away from his ego and disassociating with it - correctly so.
Yeah, I think this Hubbard thing is a hysteria spread by Tool fans for whatever reason. And if the song was made just to bash a specific messiah, it would resonate more about David Koresh than Hubbard, especially 'cause the band started to write this song right after the Waco siege.
As you pointed out, Eulogy may be talking more about the dissipation of the ego. Maynard also uses the idea of crucifying his own ego in other Tool songs like Part of Me, Bottom and Reflection. AEnima's clearly a very jungian inspired album, a "psychospiritual" bridge to Lateralus, so we have to understand towards those concepts too.

It is in no way about... well... what you described... ya'know, not every fucking Tool song is about Maynard's "QUEST" for enlightenment"... oh wait... actually NONE of them are... particularly because Maynard is not (nor is anyone else in the band) *"enlightened"*...he'd be the first one to say as much... (ESPECIALLY in a room full of fucking Tool fans)... and he'd be saying it the loudest (with a beautiful voice as well, lol!)... (not to mention he'd probably laugh at the entire concept and think it was a fucking joke)... LOFNL!!! No, but seriously... His songs aren't about reaching elightenment, like some Tool fan's might desperately proclaim and believe... if anything, the closest thing to that sentiment would be that many Tool songs are about introspection on a particular subject or aspect of Maynard's self, or life, or an experience... or a sort of personal meditation on such archetypal motifs as saaayyy... a grudge, or a communication breakdown with a loved one, or our need to vicariously experience violence and suffering, or the birth of his son, or a traumatic episode in his childhood, or his anger, hatred, and frustration with Los Angeles, or a psychedelic trip, or an unhealthy relationship with a spouse, or the death of his mother, or addiction, or closely-conscious inspection of his shadow-self, or his deep, deep (yes, pun intended, lol!) appreciation for anal sex because it's four degrees warmer than the vagina, or perhaps coming to a realization about how beautiful, and fleeting, and precious, and boundless, and ephemeral, and delicate, and exciting this existance is as this being, this conciousness, alive in this temporary corporeal form, and how we should be aware of that fact and thankful for it...
And yes, obviously I am talking about Parabol/Parabola when I said that... which in my opinion, is probably the very closest Tool has ever gotten to echoing the idea, or sentiment in your comment... But it's still not about being enlightened or even a quest for enlightenment... its just what I said it was... a simple acknowledgment of realizing how precious and "holy" our existence in this otherwise temporary material shell, and how our true self, all which we should hold as truly important is the eternal self, the spark of consciousness that exists within that shell... even that's not enlightenment... that's a simple truth to anyone who is even a little bit "woke" when it comes to these matters. I'm fully aware of that fact and concept, and not only agree with it conceptually but have felt it as this deeply *real* and intangible, but palpable... *something*... feeling... whatever you wanna call it... but in no way is that enlightenment, and in no way am I enlightened.
I'd have to say the Tool songs that come the very closest to being about what you're thinking about as "enlightenment" would have to be, of course, Parabol/Parabola as stated above, "Lateralus", "Disposition/Reflection/Triad" (but more specifically "Reflection"), "46&2", and I guess you could say "Third Eye"... And I'd say none of these are actually about Maynard *being enlightened*... they're about deep introspection and deep meditation into one's self and psyche... but that's all... "Parabol/Parabola" I've already touched on... 2 of those songs are about very close, serious, and meditation and introspection with the specific motive and intention to confront the "shadow-self", or the "dark-side" of one's psyche and persona, in order to pull out kernels of truth about one's self, and in turn grow from what you've learned from within... which is "46&2", and "Reflection" (and honestly, to a lesser extent, Third Eye, because some aspects of that song are about confronting the shadow-self... and specifically in the context of a very intense psychedelic experience)... Now Lateralus, I'd say is like a tie with "Parabol/Parabola" for being closest to this concept of enlightenment... But even "Lateralus" isn't about enlightenment... and CERTAINLY not about Maynard himself being enlightened... it's about raising your level of consciousness, and being more "woke" in general... and basically finding the desire to learn more about your consciousness and your self and your psyche, and a connection to spirituality of some sort... a connection with some sort of mysticism or esoteric knowledge or occult knowledge... or whatever it is that grabs hold of the individual to dig deeper into that connection with the spiritual and elevate you above the prospect of just being another mindless robot, just another vapid, empty, soulless individual with no depth to their spirit and their consciousness and their awareness... Its just about starting out at square one and finding whatever it is that piques your interest into the great beyond and following that thread to wherever it takes you and being open to whatever path it takes you on, as long as it raises your level of consciousness or your appreciation for what I mentioned in talking about "Parabol/Parabola"... (And honestly, I personally think that Lateralus is about all that, but in connection and conjunction with the psychedelic experience... but that could just be my personal interpretation of it in context of my own experience)... but it still isn't about Maynard becoming "enlightened"... You may actually think "that's totally becoming enlightened, what you described there"... but no... no it isn't... not at all... becoming more conscious in general is a HUGE fucking LEAP from achieving enlightenment... the average person will NEVER reach enlightenment... if it is even TRULY attainable by someone in the modern world, connected to this modern infrastructure and modern society, and not holed up in some monastery, meditating with a bunch of monks 18 hours a day, every day for their whole life... I seriously doubt it is possible for someone like you, or me, or Maynard at all... Keep in mind, that actual "enlightenment" is becoming FULLY aware... it's reaching NIRVANA... it's not opening your third eye... it's not having an intense and introspective trip... it's not truly deep introspection... its... fucking... ENLIGHTENMENT... and in my opinion its a word that's thrown around WAY too lightly...
And I'm not sure if that's what you're doing... throwing that word around too lightly, or truly think that Maynard is actually an enlightened individual.
By the way... all that aside, even whether Maynard is enlightened or not, this song STILL is nowhere NEAR being about a conversation between Maynard and his ego... and is in no way projecting the characterization of this voice on the pulpit, this martyr on the cross, this man who'd die for you, as being some sort of personification of some aspect of his self... ego... or any other sense... It is actually about true false prophets who actually try to lead people as some sort of Messiah, and is a scathing indictment of that type of person and how they pretty much are just dirt...
But either way... Maynard isn't on a quest for enlightenment... he's not enlightened... and his music isn't about how fucking awesome and enlightened he is. Its deep, it's introspective, it's meditative, it's psychological... but it's not about how enlightened he is.
Honestly, the funny thing is, in a way... YOU are MAKING this song about Maynard the way you're talking about him being enlightened... because in a way he's has unwittingly and unintentionally become this sort of prophet figure for legions of Tool fans who literally think he's this holy being, sort of messiah or prophet, merely because he writes beautiful, deep, and conscious lyrics that stand so far apart from his contemporaries and peers... That there's a whole giant subset of his fans who actually believe he's this messiah-like figure... I'm sure it annoyed the FUCK out of him forever, but I'd imagine he now finds it pretty hilarious... but in the end, by becoming this unwitting prophet, people who think he's this enlightened being have shoehorned him into the role of the subject of this song... lofnl... I find that hilarious... and honestly, I think he'd find that deliciously ironic and a fucking hoot to boot! lofnl!

(I hope you were using enlightened and enlightenment as hyperbole, and don't actually think that Maynard is this god-walking-among-men, holier-than-thou, enlightened being walking with us mere mortals... lol... please tell me I blew your comment completely out of proportion and that you don't actually think that way... and even if that's the case, I still think you're WAAAYYY off the mark about the subject in this song being some sort of personificaltion about a facet of his self. :P)

Maynard said that is not about one particular figure, but more about the idea of a man standing up and preaching lying to everyone. It's not about Jesus Christ, it's more about all those preachers (including L. Ron Hubbard) in the US and especially in California (remember that the Ænima album deals a lot with California and L.A. in the 90s).

As with most Tool's songs, there is a lot of symbolism which can have different meanings for each person depending on where they are coming from when they listen to the lyrics. Given Maynard's religious background from his upbringing, you can find religious imagery within a number of his songs. To me Eulogy is mainly about thinking for one's self, making your own decisions and not being swayed from those personal beliefs and decisions by the words of a charismatic individual.
Meanings of the lyrics aside, this is just a kick arse song to listen and jam to.
They've usually said it's about Hubbard, but the Christ metaphor is obvious.

Yes It's Me Again!! Thank You for at least covering this song! Been requesting this since you first started covering Tool! Maybe I missed something But my take on it is that Hubbard thought he was either the 2nd coming Or Better than Jesus!! When Maynard said get off your cross, I took it to mean that he cannot compare himself to the Christ and that he was full of himself!! I had the displeasure of speaking to the Scientology followers as I was trying to expand my mind and Spirit. What I found was a Cult unlike Reverend Moon that tracks its followers out of mistrust and responds in the most horrendous ways!! Just my experience with them!! Thank God I told them where to go and challenged them. Heard recently that the Nation of Islam has joined forces with them which really puzzles me!! Why would they team up?? Don't believe me, look it up!! But Again, glad you covered the song!!
This is one of my favorite Tool songs. Iron Maiden Revelations, 22 Acadia Avenue or Sea of Madness. Perhaps Remember Tomorrow or Killer's from the early years. Please.
Just a little detail, but I think you’d be interested to know that the repeating note in the beginning is the final note on a piano. Almost like a eulogy is the final note of a person’s life.

Well in Greek there is the word "MArtiras/Μάρτυρας" that means the one who witness an event (and also in another loose meaning the one who tells something secret) but there is also "MartIrio/Μαρτύριο" (i am using capitals in both words to show where the tone is because in Greek we have intonation symbol in words) that means torment/torture/suffering (kinda synonym to vasanistirio that means torture.. for example to make someone speak etc). So Martyr could either mean the one who witness or the one who is suffering (if it comes from Martyrdom). So if it means the later one then Christ was indeed a Martyr since he suffered for our sins etc...

So much of Maynard's lyrics are VERY personal to him, his life, and experiences. It's not pleasant, but religion is just like anything else in life....flawed. The source can be misinterpreted, the representatives can be horrible, those yelling the loudest may be trying to drown out their own faults or doubts. *False promises and empty hopes can come crashing back into reality with a force that shatters lives.* Those responsible may deserve the disrespect they get. Or maybe they aren't getting enough light shown on them, and need a bit more to expose those dark corners.
