  • Many of us feel large pet food companies are all about profits and care little about the health of pets. It's the little pet food companies that care.
    well, is that true of all large companies?
    Lets take a look at Colgate Palmolive, the parent company of Hill's Pet Nutrition and Science Diet.

    My dad growing up in Jamaica had several dogs that were fed corn meal and cod fish 1 x daily. Plenty of land to roam and run. They all lived long and healthy lives. Yes, they got occasional bones as treats but their daily diet consisted of that and were FINE. Key point here is: They were fed corn. LOL 🎉

      Same in the South. Lots of houndsmen fed cornmeal to their dogs. Purina and Hill's weren't involved.

    I would happily give my money to big pet food companies because I know they hire full time experts who work on the diets and perform tremendous testing. I would never pay a cent to a small company that hires no full time vet nutritionist and uses my own pets as their lab rats no matter how "glamorous" their ingredients might sound. Merry Christmas!

      @@PetFoodPuzzleGuy to me it’s more logical to be more suspicious of small companies because there is no way they have the same money to have quality control and hire experts as do the big companies. @@PetFoodPuzzleGuy All those experts forgot to mention that organic nutrients, such as calcium and phosphorus, have much lower bioavailability in dogs and cats. They therefore have little or no negative impact on health. Inorganic nutrients used in commercial pet food, are what cause all the problems. Read the NIH study, "Effects of the long-term feeding of diets enriched with inorganic phosphorus on the adult feline kidney and phosphorus metabolism." Dec. 21, 2018. @@edschulhof6303 well, I confess I do leave that research to the experts. As someone said in here the other day, claiming she was in research, not all research or even peer reviewed studies are equal. I could cite a few studies from the 99s claiming all kibble da of things that have been rejected by the rest of the body of evidence. But I hope all these issues are debated among those who aren’t simply armchair nutritionists like us! Grabbing one study is like taking one verse from the Bible and declaring a doctrine. Not a good idea.

    Hill's third quarter 2023 profit was $201 million. Hills accounted for 22% of Colgate-Palmolive sales. Colgate is spending $700 million to purchase three dry food manufacturing plants from Red Collar Pet Foods. That's a lot of money for a product that is mostly corn, $4.73 a bushel and wheat, $6.98 a bushel. By restricting distribution, Hill's can maintain higher prices and higher profits. Automobile dealers call it "market adjustment." Animal sourced protein, amino acids and fat are definitely processed differently than plant based in a dog or cat. Glyphosate, the main ingredient of Roundup, is found in most dry pet food, due to the grains. You have said yourself that lower nutrients come from better ingredients.

    • @PetFoodPuzzleGuy
      @PetFoodPuzzleGuy  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      Ed, the price one pays for a pound of a food seems to have no correlation to its nutritional value, as we have seen comparing foods. I wouldn’t know but I imagine the costs of ingredients might be much lower than the cost of formulating a complete diet with optimal nutrients. And thanks for the financial info on Colgate and Hills but a bit off topic. Rachel’s belief is Colgate is simply profit driven. The facts contradict that. As far as Hills buying plants, they need them terribly to maintain their normal growth. But who knows. I would be very concerned to see Science Diet go mass.

      AC, thanks for your comments. I totally get it! We all end up believing someone. First of all, don’t believe me. I’m not a board certified vet nutritionist. I never even went to college! But understand I am simply the messenger. I was privileged enough to sit with and be trained by those amazing people and work with a team which included experienced vets and spent 34 years, every day in vet clinics training vets and their teams on wellness nutrition and therapeutic nutrition. And I also watched all the various marketing trends. My videos reflect all that. I would suggest you consider why is it the actual people who have the credentials and the expertise and experience don’t seem to agree at all with Rachel, Dr Becker, Rodney, etc? Do you notice real nutritionists are famous on TH-cam and Facebook, promoting themselves or their books or their foods? All of a sudden all kibble is bad, based on the most ridiculous claims. Keep learning, now that you can hear both sides. As far as certified dog nutritionists, that’s a joke. Groups form and come up with their own certification! lol! There’s a retail store chain promoting their certified nutritionists but they created the course, the test, the certification! I would not trust anyone claiming that! Check out my video responding to the dog nutritionist from England! Glad you’re here!

    This is a concern of mine about corn and wondering if it should be. I'm comfortable with feeding corn. However, my big concern is that other countries will not eat corn in our country. This is due to the herbicides, pesticides, and insecticides. Even being infused into the seeds. Is this a cancer or other health concern for dogs? Do dogs eating other grain sources have less cancer? Thank you!

    • @PetFoodPuzzleGuy
      @PetFoodPuzzleGuy  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Sandi, thank you for your comment and I believe it’s the only reason in the world to choose not to feed corn. All the myths about corn are scientifically false and it’s a great ingredient with lots of nutrients. But the herbicides, pesticides etc that have. Even added to all our food supplies is a topic I know most of us are clueless about and it’s pretty scary. Unfortunately it would be simply anecdotal if a vet or group of vets said they see less cancer in dogs eating no grains. That would be too easy. We know cancer tumors live carbs but carbs don’t cause the cancer to start. I’ve seen young healthy humans eating healthy get and due quickly from cancer and others with horrible lifestyles never get it. The same with dogs. We do know for sure that excess minerals and protein is deadly to a dog with compromised organs so that should be fundamental. Are we adding an equal risk with the possible toxins in grain? Maybe but we don’t know. Perhaps that’s why Hills makes grain free versions of some of their diets???? That would actually be an honest marketing statement! I may have to make a video on that!

      Thank you so much for this reply. I just lost a 9 year old dog to fast growing cancer and I'm devastated. I have been told it's 20% genetic and 80% environmental. So, I'm going crazy researching dog food. We don't smoke, we exercise our dogs an hour every day, do all vet care. We don't spray but do have a neighbor that sprays crops on a small field. In the end, I can't control what pesticides are being used on what. But, I was wondering your thought on the science of adjusting nutrient levels in dog food so that cancer can't thrive...at least as fast. In your opinion, do you think science formulas do a better job at making dog's bodies handle toxins better? For example, I'm vegan and I know that if I switch my leafy greens up (spinach, kale, collards, etc) my ph levels will be better. That makes me healthier and might even prevent cancer. I have 2 golden retrievers to feed yet and I'm kind of scared. I'm so glad you're informing so much about the nutrient panel. Please, if you can, help me pick a food. Thank you. @@PetFoodPuzzleGuy

      @@sandihedstrom4480 so sorry to hear about your 8 year old. We lost our Berner to cancer but she was a month shy of 13. Hills used to make a neoplasia diet that fed the dog instead of the tumor but it just gave a little more time. Beside what you might hear, there’s no correlation of food or ingredients to causing cancer. If I had a cancer dog that was not in pain I would feed a carnivorous diet if high protein and few carbs. That is about opposite what I’d do for a healthy dog though. You didn’t say how old your goldens are but Hills makes a Large Breed Adult dry three of my grand dogs have been eating for years and are doing great. We need to check and see if there’s a No corn, Wheat or Soy version to alleviate your concern over toxins. Large Breed just is a bigger kibble with some added glucosamine and chondroitin but I’m not convinced it’s beneficial anyway. Controlling micronutrient excesses and keeping your dogs lean is probably the best you can do….. and appreciate every day. Oh, and the higher antioxidants Hills uses helps reduce oxidative stress(free radicals) which most likely is linked to cancer somehow.
