    There is an engineering tolerance for everything. +/- whatever. As you gain confidence you will speed up naturally. You're doing great.

    Maybe your plans have this details, but what I think I would do (walk a mile) the night before would be draw it out on some paper. Measurements. Cut directions etc. Keep in back pocket for reference when you need it. You got this!!

    Gaps are not necessarily a bad thing. They help with thermal and humidity related expanding and contracting.

    What I would do challenge: (IMHO) The half-lap joint offers two thing. More glue surface and easier access to mechanical fasteners in the lower half. You are not using glue. I do not see any structural advantage. The dados let into the perimeter posts LOCK in the timber that butts into the dado preventing twists. If you half-lap joint was longer, I could see two or three mechanical fasteners on each side to lock in the joint. It looks like the half-lap is 6" up and 3" over. Maybe do 6" up and 8" over. Also consider the metal plates (gussets) you plan to install on the sides - plan your vertical screws according to the screws needed for metal plates. Ensure screws don't intersect. It's complicated for sure. I'm sure you will figure it out. Good luck

    I would do straight cuts. Eliminate possible errors. Possibly make some temporary plywood plates? for the inside for strength until you get metal plates

    Heather, its Tanya (from Anchor down Homestead- Momma)
    I have an idea for your plates.....
    How about you let the viewers know the cost of a single plate? Then you could "sell" a plate in memory of a veteran? A simple silver colored sharpie you could write on the plate the name of the vet and their branch of service!❤❤
    I would be game to buy 3 plates ( one for each of my kids that served)
    That way you have veterans looking down from the frame of your barn watching all the projects you do alongside other Vets in the future.
    Thoughts???....

    I am not a carpenter but my husband is and he would probably not agree with any of your viewers that advise you to cut. He hates having any bit of waste so while I'm being an arm chair carpenter getting impatient with how slooow it's going at the end of every project I'm extremely satisfied with what he built and profusely apologetic for being such an ass. I am really impressed by what you are doing. God bless you both.

    I'm catching up through your videos, so I know this is a comment very late in arrival, but as someone who struggles with anxiety as well (and whose daughter has very profound anxiety which I am helping to support her with), if I ever make a mistake, I tell myself: "Well, the worst has happened. I guess I can only go up from here!"
    It's easier to say, obviously, but with every mistake, I give myself more proof that I can come back from failure. I have more to set against those old fears, when the anxiety gets loud. I know it's hard to make mistakes - I am a perfectionist as well, it's very frustrating! - but I know that in the end, I'll look back and see the time I learned to be a little stronger. I haven't yet caught up to see how you solved the problem, but I have every faith that you will win through in the end, and your barn will be a testament to your determination and skill - both of them hard-won!

    Take your time, rushing can cause frustration. I will often take a 2by and sketch the length of the finished beam, then draw in the joint cuts with all the measurements. This allows you to double or triple check all your measurements.

  • @k.j.hastings
    @k.j.hastings ปีที่แล้ว +2

    A butt joint (I didn't name it, don't blame me) is simpler to make than a half lap. As you note the half lap is stronger though. So what is required?
    To determine this think about the forces on the roof that the top plate is designed to support and where that load is going. There are dead, live, construction and environmental loads that will basically be transferred from the purlins to the rafters which sit on the top plate. This load comes at a diagonal angle down that rafter and wants to push the wall down and out.
    There is also some potential for wind force to want to lift the roof but that's not really the bulk of it unless a tornado comes though, in which case you have other problems.
    Your second story floor helps to counteract the outward motion by creating a truss. It adds a hypotenuse to the triangle legs your rafters make. This directs the load down the posts.
    The posts are supporting the roof load and the weight of the top plate, part of the second story and the loads from the walls. But for the purposes of the question the load we care about is on the top of the post.
    What purpose do the metal plates serve? My guess is they're T plates designed to not only secure the top plate to the posts but the two top plates together, creating a single system out of two members.
    I'd probably stick with the half lap because that does much the same thing.

    @darlene.livings921 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    First I would like to say your doing a fantastic job. Everyone makes mistakes, thats life. Don't beat yourself up over it. I wouldn't do a template for the cuts as I think its better to do all the measurements separate. Its good practice and it keeps your memory on how its done for future stuff. I find you get lazy and forget how to do stuff if you have a bunch of short cuts. I think I'd put a 2x6 board across the side of the beat for more support. It doesn't have to be that long maybe 2 feet. Kinda like you would do if the board broke and you didn't have one to replace it, a bandade until you get the plates. Keep up the great work. take care

  • @waderue
    @waderue ปีที่แล้ว

    well because your doing a lap joint and you don't have the bolt plates yet for the bottom part of the lap joint I would drive the 4-inch screws in and sink the to where they bit into the post and top beam lap joint you only have to drive the screws in the bottom of the lap joint beam that connecting don't worry about going threw both join and into the post from the top unless you longer screws and do make way long screws

    With God's help and all the friends he's put in my life. I did this.

    Just a quick question. If you put screws in each beam, when you then put the plates on will your screws be on the way as you bolt/screw the plates on. Just hoping to prevent a problem.
