LIPLESS CRANKBAITS - Everything You Need To Know! (Beginner To Advanced)

  • Lipless Cranks are awesome! These crankbaits catch great numbers of fish and they catch giant bass too! They can be hopped, ripped, or steady retrieved in open water, around cover, or right on the bottom. With so many variables, where do you even start?! We're here to help...
The lipless is one of our favorite bass fishing techniques. It shines in the Spring and Fall but can catch fish any time of year. Our two main methods are hopping the baits on bottom and steady retrieving them in the middle of the water column. The two methods utilize completely different baits and today we're explaining why.
Below you'll find links to the exact baits discussed in the video. We've included our favorite colors for each, as well as links to some of our favorite gear for fishing these baits. All the links go directly to Tackle Warehouse where you can see detailed photos and descriptions of each item.

Thanks for another great video, Tim! Very informative, and I am glad you gave it the time and detail you did. The biggest thing I find with you guys is you are helping me learn when and WHY to throw certain baits. That is much more valuable than just saying "Throw one of these in the spring." That way us anglers can get to the point that we can evaluate conditions for ourselves, and make an informed decision.

Hey Tim and Matt, thank you so much for the LV 500 tip. I went out on Lake St. Clair yesterday and tossed one around from my kayak. Ended up landing my PB northern pike (38" 14 lbs.)! Then two casts later, I landed my PB Walleye (28" 6.5 lbs)! TWO PB FISH WITHIN 3 CASTS! I give you two the assists on those! I also got a few decent Largemouth, but they were a little overshadowed.

I went down the rabbit hole. Spent 200 bucks on lv 500s, gama ewg hooks…throwing them on a dobyns dc735glass and steez A TW HLC out on Rayburn. When my buddy wasn’t catching anything on everything the other day I was catching them hopping these things. Went out again today and caught about an 18 pound sack. Also, I caught about 20 sand bass and 3 catfish 🤷‍♂️ for some reason I catch a lot of catfish on this 😂 I got a couple 6th sense quakes too. Gotta say I like the stock hooks.

2 of the biggest bass I've caught were both on the cotton cordell spot in the red craw color.
I put some owner replacement hooks on there and surprisingly the split rings held up for me personally.
I have a more expensive traps now but they haven't caught the quality fish that the spot got me a few years ago.
    Great video man ✌☮

I've read in a few place if you use 2 split rings it's far more difficult for fish to throw a treble bait. In theory it makes sense because it gives the hooks more play. Have you tried this/what are your thoughts on this

That is something that swimbait companies have taken into consideration. Look at the Bull Shads and Triple Trouts. I am waiting for bigger companies (Megabass, Berkley, River2Sea, Strike King, etc) to incorporate those innovative concepts into their lures to improve the hookup to land ratio.

    • @JerseyShoreFishing
      @JerseyShoreFishing 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

I’m a saltwater guy and heavily target striped bass, however, I use a lot of freshwater tactics and simply make some adjustments for saltwater use. Hence why I’m watching this video on lipless crankbaits.
Some of the more typical saltwater lures I use have a swivel built-in instead of a hook hanger for that exact reason, to prevent fish from gaining leverage and throwing the hook. On lures that have a standard hanger using two split rings definitely helps, but I’ve still had fish turn the treble to a point where they are able to unbutton themselves..
There is one additional solution though, something more and more guys are using with saltwater lures. Instead of using a split ring, tie a loop using kevlar cord. It’s the same material used for assist hooks on slow pitch jigs. The reason is, if a fish turns the hook the cord will simply twist on itself preventing the fish from gaining leverage and reducing the risk of a fish coming unhooked. I’ve recently modified a few lipless cranks for saltwater use and plan on using the kevlar cord method to help keep bigger fish pinned. Just trying to give you another option that may not be that common on the freshwater scene, but would still work.

Casting from shore in Mississippi River or Minneapolis lakes, I kill with the lv-500, although I prefer the "Shiny Shad" colors, especially American Shad. Reel, Reel, Rip, Reel, Reel, Rip, that pattern is so effective for pike, and large and smallmouth bass, as well as walleye, big crappie, and even an occasional channel or Flathead catfish. It's a fun way to fish, and highly effective!

Hmmmmmm, my lipless rod is 6’9” 13 crankbait . Fast tip with backbone but fairly parabolic. My lipless reel is a Diawa Fuego 8:1… Definitely a budget set up but for some reason I really like my 13’s and find myself leaving my high end rods at home. That said, great video and I will be bottom hopping an LV 500 this Wednesday.

Super spot is one of my favorite lipless pranks it doesn't get a lot of love either from the pro community but it catches the lightning out of fish it's one of those baits that you can buy at Walmart for three or four dollars they're about half the price of a Bill Lewis rattle trap. They don't have as many colors but they've got enough here on our local Waters the citrus Chad color seems to work real good in our watercolor for this area

I have a question that has nothing to do with this video lol. Anyways I have the 13 fishing concept a2 baitcasting reel and I like it but I don’t see you guys talk much about them, I guess my question is would you guys prefer a curado over a concept a2? And what would you use the concept for if you had it yourself? I want the a3 for pike, Muskie and larger bass but want to know if I’m making the wrong choice or not, I really like the a3 for the drag clicker. If you could just give me your feedback that would be awesome, thank you. You guys are the best and do so much for the fishing community and I love it. It has helped me tremendously with bass fishing and not spending a crap ton of money on useless gear.

I don't think I've seen, although you've probably covered it. But what about a video on shallow shad type cranks.

    Quick question:
How do you feel about using a speed clip when you trap fishing?
    Thanks

Love watching your videos. You've taught me alot. Have you used the Rapala Rippin Rap? I've had great success with them on the west coast.

Thank you again for your videos. I have a question if you decide to answer I'd appreciate it. At the end of last fishing season, I bought my first baitcaster. I live in the northeast and spinning reels is what I grew up with. I haven't used it yet and am looking forward to trying it out. I did a lot of research on it but the reel I wanted wasn't available. So, I substituted. I bought the Favorite White Bird 7'2" Heavy rod and the Abu Garcia Max 4 Pro 7.1:1. I am interested in what fishing techniques you believe this set up might be best for? Or if I should trying to find a better match. Again, thank you for always taking us to school with your videos.

this is great information and extremely useful and helpful to us anglers but , Tim what about pink crankbaits or lipless crankbaits??? im js because im buying the pink googan squad crankbaits and lipless crankbaits , so ic the bass decide they want the lipless crankbait over the crankbait i have options then.

Hi Matt or Tim, I know this is an older, but I was hoping to get an answer from you. I noticed you rocommend a St. Croix Vitory for smaller crankbaits in this video. I have a St. Croix 2022 legend tournament series Casting rod that I have in my tackle warehouse cart right now that was recommended in one of your more recent videos. I was going to buy a 7'4 med hvy mod. Would this be a better option then the one you recommend in this video for lipless crankbaits? I am already set on a deep crankbait rod. Thank you in advance!

So im sitting here, waiting,,,,about to spool up some 25 pound fluoro on the H flouro flipping stick,,,getting ready to man up on some high muddy water,,,,waiting, knowing whats coming. Waiting…….lipless crankbaits. I got 1/2oz to 1 1/4 oz jigs and tungsten out and we talking about lipless crankbaits. Tennessee must have got spared from the last round of storms. Days later and were still browned out.
