    My favorite game of all time was between Ivanchuk and Kasparov in Linares in 91 I believe. Kasparov was in his prime and a young Ivanchuk made Kasparov look like a amateur. He had almost all of Kasparov’s pieces in one corner of the board. Kasparov didn’t get anxious about playing many people in those days but Chucky was one of them.

    When on my high school chess team in the 1970s, I played King's Gambit every chance I could because in many cases my opponent had never seen it before. I studied it exhaustively. In tournament play it was more difficult because the players were better read.

    In my opinion, the attempted bishop sacrifice at the end was probably one of the greater moves in this game. I certainly would have fallen for it, as I would take it that Anish had simply given up and was trying to stall

    • @Astrobrant2
      @Astrobrant2 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Not being any kind of good chess player myself, I would have been ticked off that he's just making me make an extra unnecessary move just for spite. Then I would have thought, "Maybe he has something up his sleeve." I would have studied it for awhile, not come up with an answer, and take the bishop! 🤦‍♂️

      Same. So resourceful of Anish and also very alert by Ivanchuk to be alive to the trap given that it's a rapid game.

    @Agadmator, you can always say “as of move X we have a completely unique position”. This takes care of the confusion!

  • @hummingfrog
    @hummingfrog 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    I don't care whether it happened 150 years ago, saying "it's a completely new game" and "it's a position that never been reached again" are *entirely* different things! The former might describe a good move that was a novelty at the time but which has became popular since, while the latter suggests a refuted line that no one has ever wanted to reexplore. Quite different!

  • @l.968
    @l.968 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    i think it's nice to know a move from the 40's was completely new too, maybe you can say it was a "novelty at the time", it makes more sense to put it that way
