This is the story of the birth of modern chess - when the possibilities of chess as an art, a science and a sport all converged.
The point of convergence was a young boy from Louisiana named Paul Morphy. At a time when America was seen as a backwoods nation with little cultural history and even less intellectual impetus, at a time when chess was considered the exclusive property of a few European countries, at a time when the game was played successfully by a handful of men wizened by years, Paul Morphy, in the brief span of 19 months and with seemingly little effort, defeated conclusively every player he met.
While today few non chess players even know his name, he was one of the most famous celebrities of his time and within the hallowed halls of the chess playing community he is considered by some as the greatest chess player of all time.
But this diminutive, unassuming boy rose to fame almost out of nowhere and once he secured his place in history, he retired back into that hazy unknown, shunning the public eye, never again to play serious chess. Not only was he one of great practitioners of the game, but also one of it's greatest enigmas. He's been given the sobriquet, The Pride and Sorrow of Chess.

1) His dog gets in the way and knocks something over and he has to fix it.
2) Audio feedback caused by his microphone being too close to his speaker.
3) Has the recording volume too high or too low.
4) Has something playing on his computer (like music or a TH-cam video he forgot to turn off).
5) Something specific to the video (mouse slips, says the wrong piece, etc.)
For this video it was having the recording volume too high.
I really appreciate that you explain the reasoning for a lot of the more quiet moves. That has been my biggest problem in learning this game as when I study games they will often have a series of seemingly inconsequential moves with no comments. Have a good one!

Instead of capturing the queen at 9:14 you can also checkmate the king. If black king moves to f7 you can move the bishop to h5 which results in checkmate. If black king moves to h8 you can simply move the pawn to f7 which results in checkmate black can only delay this by moving the knight to g7. If black places knight to g7 to stop the check with the rook. White moves the pawn to f7 with check. after king takes or moves king to h8 moving the queen to f7 will result in checkmate. If black places bishop to g6 to stop the check. White takes the queen and is absolutely winning.

If one could go back in time and urge Morphy not to retire at 22, imagine the heights he'd have reached...
When I as an nine year old started playing chess in my local chess club, I got a 60 year old chess book from an antiquarian, with a couple of hundred of Morphy’s games. I studied every game in and out and this has really influenced me as a player, even today 40 years later. Although theory has long caught up, this is still my favourite player of all times. I really appreciate that people can enjoy this old master.

The title made me remember when I was a kid and played with my friends, checkmating wasn’t important, we literally had to capture the king xD
Well checkmate just means that there is no move to prevent capturing the king on the next move
Yeah but the idea was that if the other player didn’t notice a check you could capture the king and the other player lost, which was so fun since we were really bad back then xD
@@sirtoti1 we had 3 check rule. You only had to say check 3 times, after that opponent can capture the king!

Thanks to this channel i finally know about Morphy and wonder why at the time i was introduced into chess that i only learned about Fischer and Capablanca. From what I've seen i consider Morphy to be the best all time followed by Fischer and Capa.

King's gambit accepted with white is just heaven to play......the game is quick, interesting and fun. Definitely the best after Evans.

@@mohammadaminsarabi6207 If it couldn't go wrong easily it wouldn't be a gambit. Its a fun opening because its sharp, and white takes early initiative in attacking. And because its a 'bad opening' (and therefore not too popular) most low intermediate players are out of their comfort zone when playing against it. No one is saying that master level players should play it in tournaments.
Well, Shaw, Fedorov, Zjaginsev, Short and Ivanchuk are playing it. And they are all GMs.
It is definetely a sound opening. But it's sharp and you have to know a lot of theory.

@@COBRA-rq1ig I don't know about the Lolli, but the Muzio Gambit is a draw with best play. If you let stockfish run to a high depth deep into the mainline, eventually it'll start indicating 0.0

Bit of an unfair representation of, and dismissal of the Muzio gambit in this video. Yes, it's not played at the higher levels, but i'm a 1700 and still crush people with some of those lines when it comes up in Blitz.
Agad didn't dismiss the Muzio Gambit at all. In fact, he specifically noted that there's lines (like the Muzio) where you can just sac the knight. However because of white's 4th move, the players weren't in one of those lines. For anyone who doesn't know, the Muzio is:
1: e4, e5
2: f4, exf4
3: Nf3, g5
4: Bc4, g4
5: OO, gxf3
6: Qxf3, Qf6
The opening is fairly dubious, although as Andy said it's perfectly fine for low rated players, particularly in blitz. Notable is that white does not play h4, instead getting three free developing moves in while black move the g pawn three times. This makes a huge difference. According to my stockfish, the position after black's move 6 in the proper muzio is about -1.3, whereas the position after white's move 6 (qxf3) in the line Agad dismissed out of hand is -3.7.
TLDR: The sac Antonio dismissed wasn't the Muzio gambit at all... and he was entirely fair to dismiss it.
