- Whenever players like Vassily Ivanchuk and Garry Kasparov meet over the board, you can be sure of a fight. Both players are kings of the initiative, and thrive in dynamic environments. Ivanchuk and Kasparov played this game in 1994 at the 8th Euwe Memorial tournament. A Sicilian Defense, Najdorf is present with Kasparov striking early at Ivanchuk's pawn duo. Ivanchuk saw this as his opportunity to pounce as early as move 10.

I really do not like the Sicilian Defense with the Nidorf or the Dragon. It is really easy to slay the dragon. All you have to do is eliminate the dragon knight, bust open the kingside, and hunt him down.

Beautiful initiative by Ivanchuck. I had to laugh when you said "If the queen gets into g6, you can kiss all these pawns good bye." :) I also really appreciate the moments you choose to make us think about the best next move. Best chess channel on TH-cam I know by a country mile!
Watching the games with your descriptions and comments (and evident admiration for the brilliance involved, albeit modestly displayed) has been like visiting great artworks with experts. I saw that move in a second and my chess rating is shit LOL. That move just felt so obvious, can't believe one of the greatest players missed that. But that's what makes chess exciting.

Hey Jerry thank-you for the wonderful Analysis. Just one question, what does black do after c3 at 6:02 ?
Be6. If cxd4 then Bxd4 and the white queen is dead, she must give herself up for the rook on f8. I dont think white would capture however, more likely is 20. Bxe6, fxe6 and white is doing well. Black has an open F file, but white will still ultimately win.
probably the same as he did after the rook move, bishop to e6. moving the pawn would be a bad idea..

What a game!!!Unbelievable moves
On move 39, could black reply with ...Rb7 ? This would interfere with white coordination on the back rank, and both rooks would be defended by the knight (if either rook is taken, the knight recaptures with a punch thrown at the queen). Unless I'm just not as observant of the board or followups, I'm not really seeing a good reply White can make to mitigate black's defense if 39 ...Rb7.
Additionally, Black may favor a rook-rook exchange, after 39 ...Rb7, because it forces white to consider capturing on b7 (if the white rook moves out of the way, the b5 pawn will drop with a check)
Jerry, do not forget to add final computer evaluation graph at the end please.

It's astonishing to see the then-world champion miss the quick equalization after 14.Bg7 and instead sac the queen in desperation so early in the game. Was this blitz? He couldn't have been in time pressure, and this shouldn't have been a move he spent less than 20+ minutes on. And it was the only other move to consider!
mistakes happen
My point isn't that mistakes can't happen; it's that given the situation, he can't possibly have *missed* the other line entirely. That's just crazyness. I think that would be much more extreme than a grandmaster missing a mate in one. Anyone can overlook something that blindsides them, but if you're in a position that early in the game where you're faced with a queen sac, you're going to take stock of all the available options. And this was such an obvious idea, any patzer alert enough to notice the mate threat would spot the counter move right away... fianchettoing the bishop is one of the most obvious things in the world to do (it's not an "unusual feeling" move like the mate in one Kramnik missed.) That's how commonplace the counter-move was... it's a move that has its own special name.
It's like... it's like the difference between getting in a freak accident with a lawnmower and losing your arm, vs. getting your arm stuck in the lawnmower (while it's off) and having to cut it off with a pocketknife out of desperation so that you don't starve to death. Freak accidents happen to everyone, professionals included, yeah. But the idea that someone would cut off their own arm without thinking long and hard about it and trying to figure out another way is... incredible. It's a different kind of incredible than simply being careless and missing a threat.
To me, I think this is much more surprising than a grandmaster missing a mate in one. Because it's a conscious decision he made, not something that snuck up on him. And he definitely had lots of time left on his clock. The best I can figure is that there was some other danger he thought he saw deeper in the other line that turned out to be a mirage, but it was a danger that was so bad that he somehow thought it worth it to try rolling the dice on a queen for two minors exchange instead.
It's an interesting mistake from a reigning world champion. I'm not denigrating him; I just think it's surprising and interesting to figure out how it could happen when he had an hour to think about it and he must've known that sacrificing the queen was an almost guaranteed loss.

Also, I would suggest that you avoid blitz. Try +10minutes formats instead, they are far more instructive

Gerhard Symons Maybe Kasparov thought there would be enough compensation or he just wanted an interesting game and challenge himself. He almost certainly considered the bishop move as it is not hard to find.
You're better than Kasparov and should devote your life solely to chess.

Was this Bullet or Blitz. In normal or rapid not even 1800 rated will miss 14... Bg7. Bishop fianchetto coming for defense is most obvious and first idea which comes to mind
Kasparov's blunder cost him this game. In a way, what caused Ivanchuk's victory was more because of Kasparov's mistake rather than Ivanchuk's skills (which undoubtedly is/was one of the highest in the world).
what blunder the bishop h6 from ivanchuk was sensational and even if only saving move from kasparov is played it only brings an even position where you could say ivanchuk has the slight initiative
