I feel like Ivanchuk's games are stories told on the board. There's just something so poetic about him surrendering a pawn to trap Gata in a self-made prison only to sacrifice another one to free him so that he walks right to his own execution. It's masterful and brilliant... yet so cruel.
After digging this channel I've started seeing the chess games as stories, too. And now I'm having this surge of interest towards chess that wasn't there before. The games make sense and it feels good. Makes me want to play it myself.
I laughed so hard throughout the game .... poor Kamsky was busy with his knight the whole time ... it's like Kamsky: 'can my knight go here? plz' ivanchuk: 'No' kamsky: 'or there?' ivanchuk: 'no' kmasky: 'anywhere?' ivanchuk 'Nooooo -_-'
Very unusual to see a game with that many “ waiting moves “ .. and a move by Ivanchuck of the King, seemingly made solely to provoke..interesting. Thanks for the analysis!
2:27 - Incorrect The move h3 isn't called the Anti-Marshall. The move a4 is the Anti-Marshall. The move h3 in this position is doing several things. 1- It is high class waiting move. 2- It can be seen as great transposition move to persuade black to go into main line Ruy Lopez. 3- It can be seen as a King Loft move. The move h3 is doing all of the above. I will explain each point so you can understand. I will start at the beginning! The idea of the Marshall Attack is to hold back the D pawn. The main line for Black is to play the move d6 which is a more tame move defending the e5 pawn In the Marshall Attack, Black tries to hold back the D pawn with aggressive intention in mind! Black wants to play the move d5 at the appropriate time to violently open the black position when Whites Queen side pieces are congested. The violent move d5 comes with a sacrifice of 1 black pawn, but it has dangerous King Side Attacking chances. White has to defend very carefully. A misplay could result in white getting checkmated. The question's which often gets asked is when is white's pieces congested? When is going in for this violent idea appropriate? The white pieces are congested when white plays the typical move that was considered the main line move at the time. The main line move at time was c3. The move c3 blocks the development of the white knight on b1. In addition, the d1 pawn hasn't moved which hinders the white pieces on left side of the board to develop. These 2 pawn c3 & d1 are temporary congesting white queen side pieces. This allows black the chance to go for a quick King side attack. Black gives up a pawn to gain attacking initiative on white. White in turn is up 1 pawn, but is behind in development. Black is banking on the idea that white queen side pieces are not going to help much in the defense of the white King! In addition, White might not defend properly with the few pieces he does have available. If white slips up, black could net his lost pawn back or even net the White King! Years later, players began trying to avoid the Marshal Attack because the idea of trying to defend properly with the white pieces is unappealing for most players. There is nothing wrong with playing the white position and white has resources to defend + has 1 pawn up. If white can defend, White can use the extra pawn to potentially win the game in the late/end game The question is can white make it to end game? Will white get check mated in the middle game before the game reaches the end game? For the above reasons, the white players decided to try other moves. Players didn't want to risk going in for something like this. There is nothing wrong with going for this line, but you better be a good defender. Obviously, not every chess player is a good defender. Some players are better at attacking. This is why other moves began to be played instead of c3. The move a4 was created/played. The move a4 is called the Anti-Marshall which challenges blacks pawns on the Queen side. Black has to respond to this move which stirs the game away from the Marshall Attack. The move a4 is a cheeky move by white which says "Im playing the white pieces. The white pieces have first move initiative. I am an aggressive attacking player. I'm going to attack you first before you attack me." The move h3 was another move created/played. I will now explain the first reason behind the move 1- The move is high class waiting move. The move h3 forces black to make a move that reveals blacks intentions. If black plays d5 after the move h3, they show there hand. This helps white because white hasn't played c3, yet. This means the white knight on b1 can go to c3 which prevents white from being completely congested! The Marshall Attack is giving up a pawn to capitalize on white's congested queen side pieces. The move h3 isn't congesting white. This is why Black side players don't play d5 in response to h3. The move h3 isn't Anti-Marshall as Agadmator said in video. The move h3 is bidding time for white which dissuades black from playing d5. Giving up a pawn when white isn't congested sort of defeats the purpose of the Marshall Attack. I wanted to make the correct so everyone doesn't get false idea's of the move. After the move h3, Black players have tried a few different moves. The 2 popular moves are d6 or Bb7. The move d6 gives white the chance to transpose back into Ruy Lopez main line. White can play c3 after d6 which transposes the line. This is how we come to my second statement. 2- The move h3 can be transposition tool. White has dissuaded black into going for d5. Thus, Some Black side players go for d6. The move d6 is a more tame move which isn't bad. The move d6 has been played for hundreds of years. The alternative move black has tried is Bb7. The black side players have been playing Bb7 as a counter move to whites move "h3". The black side players believe Bb7 punishes white for playing h3. The black side players have argued the move h3 is wasted move. So let's explain why this argument exists! The Bb7 main line isn't considered to be strongest continuation. However, white players don't play h3 in the main Bb7 line. In this situation, white players were playing h3 to dissuade black from playing d5. Black responses with Bb7 and they tell white your move h3 is a wasted move in the Bb7 line black is now playing. Than the white players give counter argument! They say h3 dissuaded d5 + it is still a useful move because it gives the white King Loft. The White King can always run to h2 incase of an emergency. The move h3 opens up h2 for the white King. This is how we come to my third statement. 3- the move h3 gives white King loft/escape square. Essentially, this is the overall battle of ideas & plans which is going on in the position. It is very easy for people to get confused by these different idea's. This is why I wanted to make the correction. I think Agadmator does great videos. I think Agadmator simply got confused. If you don't play the position exclusively, you can be confused by the subtle differences in the position. It is a lot of information which can be overwhelming at times. However, every move generally has a reason behind it. As a chess student/lover, I try to help spread the info. I love the Ruy Lopez. I have played it for a few years. This is why I know some of these idea's. It's like my baby. It's my go to line to play!
the best things that you have ever said, #8:12 "this is a very sad knight" also #16:26 "I don't think I was ever sorry for any piece like this poor knight" man I really enjoyed this, the way you described this knight it was simultaneously crucial and also enjoyable and beautiful just like the game itself, Thanks man for creating these beautiful chain-series of Marshal Attack videos, I know most of your subscribers can play chess well , but to be honest and I don't exaggerate at all, but I think or I'd better say I believe watching your videos is like reading a very accurate book about chess but the difference is yours is more enjoyable, Thanks again
I am terrible at chess and haven't played in 20 years but I find these games fascinating and I see how simplistic my strategies are. thank you for rekindling my interest in this masterful game.
"It seems like the same position except Ivanchuk's knight has teleported to F5." Ivanchuk was then disqualified as teleportation is banned, he went on to invent his own game named Chukie chess where both players have 15 queens and the kind is invulnerable to checkmate
Many interesting points in the game despite Ivanchuk's pressure pushing in Kamsky's position quite early on. I'm also glad you go into other variations and I'm rather impressed by your upload rate and enthusiasm that you keep bringing into the videos and tactics. I'm not a very good chess player, but it is a game of so many colours and ideas that the players bring onto the board, so with your commentary and back story of the players I am mentally stimulated as well as entertained hehe
Congrats on 40K. You channel is growing exponentially. Given the amount of work you put in and provide us with quality of content, I'd say you totally deserve it.
Marshall innovated hundreds of attacks, gambits, and counter-gambits. Most have fallen by the wayside. But not what was originally called Marshall's counter-gambit to the Ruy Lopez. Over the years, the extra words were dropped, and now it is simply *THE* Marshall.
"I fixed my Internet provider. Well, I didn't fix it, I changed it." LMFAO! Greetings from Serbia with compassion :D And well done, keep up the good work! :) Najzanimljiviji kanal o šahu :)
@agadmator, looking through the comments here on 18th April 2020, you had just hit 40k subscribers 2 years ago BUT NOW 599k. Extraordinary BUT not surprising as your commentary is superb. Also, you seem to have a great admiration of and for Ivanchuk who, 3 days ago I had never heard of but is now my chess superhero. Maybe, one day, his name will be immortalised on the board of World Chess Champions, which would be deserving of his occasional brilliant play 👍👍👍
Well, with this speed we'll soon run out of good Ivanchuk's games. We'll have to switch to his bad games. And yes, he had plenty of those, contrary to the image he has on youtube :)
Black would be manic depressive after that final move. Expecting victory within seconds only to have it stolen by a queen trading for a pawn so unexpectantly. One of the best moves I've ever seen.
I think, Agadmator will make me fan of all the chess players within months. I was already the fan of Anand, then became the fan of the great Tal and now this Ivanchuk guy.
agadmator I have watched every single video of yours. I really love your channel, your voice is really soothing, you don't talk a lot of bullshit and you upload daily. I wish you all the best and you are for sure one of my favorite youtube channels! I'd love to see a video of yours where you talk a little bit about yourself or at least about how you came to play chess! Best regards, Simeon
I literally felt like flagging this video for cyber mobbing XD What a sad knight it truly was. Pained to watch him play it fore and back. God knows how desperate Kamsky must have felt.
I know Ivanchuk was playing effectively a boy but, wow, how to crush an opponent. NOTE: agadmator stated at the end of the clip that he had just hit 48k subscribers - watching this on 13th Dec 2020 891,000 subscribers W O W!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It seems that Ivanchuck played on Kamsky' unwillness to sacrifice. As i understood the sacs do exactly that - buying breakthroughs and general disorder for the price of material equilibrium..
Hello Mr. Agadmator. I love your work. Thanks for such a big collection for us. I have a really weird hypothetical QUESTION FOR YOU and I think if anyone can answer this, it is you as you have analysed almost all the great players. So, Suppose all the great chess players of their time all of a sudden simultaneously come in their top form (by top form I mean the form at the time of their career peak) who will come up to be unbeatable by others.
Kamsky should have given up on that sad knight and continue playing, but Ivanchuk is a great player, definitely my favorite, so there's no hope for young Kamsky :D
Just my two cents: you should have showed the follow up move Bh2+ which lines up the K + Q and which negates the QxP sac in the old Marshall. (Bh2+, Kg1, Bg3) Love your chess series!
Can some one please help me understand, at time 12:36 pawn capture on f3 by rook was recommended. But this is resulting in loss of rook as pawn on g2 can capture rook winning material. So how is this a good idea? Appreciate any help.
Funny thing is the game ended with the knight hanging, abandoned by the king waiting to be killed by the rook, and any move he makes also gets him killed. Sad knight :(
After Ba1...Rxc3 has to be followed by Ra2 immediately, no? "A passed pawn is a criminal which should be kept under lock and key. Mild measures, such as police surveillance, are not sufficient." Aron Nimzovich
Hello Mr. Agadmator. I had seen a match played by Joshua Waitzkin which I saw somewhere on your channel. Can you please share some more matches played by him.
I would love to see you cover a video of the chess game 'McDonnell Vs. La Bourdonnais'. Other people covered the game but not so good, and usually you cover games really well.
I feel like Ivanchuk's games are stories told on the board. There's just something so poetic about him surrendering a pawn to trap Gata in a self-made prison only to sacrifice another one to free him so that he walks right to his own execution. It's masterful and brilliant... yet so cruel.
He's fantastic!

@@АлександрЗибик-ь5с you should play. I have no clue what language your name is in but if it's eastern European it's almost mandatory
That's russian. It is a cyrillic language with 33 characters in its alphabet.
Sad knight wasn't even captured.
Had to live through the misery the whole time.
He lived to tell the tale
I laughed so hard throughout the game .... poor Kamsky was busy with his knight the whole time ... it's like
Kamsky: 'can my knight go here? plz'
ivanchuk: 'No'
kamsky: 'or there?'
ivanchuk: 'no'
kmasky: 'anywhere?'
ivanchuk 'Nooooo -_-'
+Syed Humza :D
8:08 no, you don't :D
Sometimes in the Ruy Lopez, classical, you can do this to the black QN and then the fun is much the same for white.
🤣🤣
Kamsky's knight was almost as sad as Kasparov's bishop pair
Yes😀 only difference is Kasparov suffered a lot more in his hand.
what game are you talking about?
at least a Knight can ´get over it´ :)
3:33
1)h3, Qh4; 2)Qf3? Why not capture the Night in g4? The queen can’t capture on f2 if there’s no night! 🤔
Hall naws those bishop pair invented the word depression hahahahaha
This video should be called “the saddest knight of chess”
and the Worthless Rook on e2 :)
For how sad a horse, think Celestia when she had to banish Luna to the Moon.
Very unusual to see a game with that many “ waiting moves “ .. and a move by Ivanchuck of the King, seemingly made solely to provoke..interesting. Thanks for the analysis!
That sad knight 😂😂😂
Funny
I love Ivanchuk playstyle, kind of reminds me of Alphazero games, just cutting off opponent's pieces and playing your own brilliant game
Literally what I was thinking. This game shows that Ivanchuk was the original Alpha Zero lol
Great mind truly think alike
*Poor Knight* just want to play.
Ohh cute poor knighty....
"This knight is very sad". Classic. Thanks for bringing these games to life.

Old school agadmator videos where he seems hungover ftw
Brilliant game played by Ivanchuk. Absolute domination
Anyone else liking agadmator's videos even before watching it? :D
Ivanchuk games by agadmator = good and fun times
Kamsky had No where to move. Amazing.
Linares '91 by Ivanchuk, one of the greatest tournament results ever (simply beating K & K was impressive enough).
He beat K, K & K (kamsky)💀

WHATTT!?! A 18 minute video from AgadMator? The universe has smiled upon us today :)
Man, you could just feel Kamsky's helplessness in this game as Ivanchuk just slowly crushes him. Really something.
Congrats on 40K. You channel is growing exponentially. Given the amount of work you put in and provide us with quality of content, I'd say you totally deserve it.
Plzz make a video on marshal vs capablanca the one talked about in quote

i'm late to the fun, it's 184k now
195 600
8 months later .. it's 208 k subscribers :D
August 2019 and our boy is at 457k subscribers nearing half a million!
Kamsky's knight repeat movements feels like Ivanchuk just tied up Kamsky and now do whatever he wants with his pieces
This game would make Nimzovich shed a tear of joy.
Nice Game and good calculations from Ivanchuk!
Very nice line in Marshall Attack
shown by Invanchuk and he didn't give any chance to Kamsky. This is very nice game and really enjoyable.
A few days ago i asked for more ivanchuk. And you post 10 videos with him. Thank you so much man. I love you ❤💙💚💛💜
Well, with this speed we'll soon run out of good Ivanchuk's games. We'll have to switch to his bad games. And yes, he had plenty of those, contrary to the image he has on youtube :)
Vassily is a legend killer and a legend himself!!!
Thanks for showing the variation at 3:05, that's fascinating. I hope I get a chance to play it
Man, I really hope your channel hits much more than 50k! You're doing a great job! My gf and me really enjoy your videos :)
It did, indeed 😁
Congratulations and thanka for all your chess analysis, best in youtube
Awesome how you include the notation!
Why the long face, Sir Sad Knight?
He's just feeling a bit hoarse.
8:12 "This is a very sad knight"
LOL I've had a couple of those
8:14 "The knight is...uhh.....This is a very sad knight."😂😂😂😂😭😭😭
This is only 2 years ago and he’s talking about 50k subs, now he’s 750k
Coongrats on 40k subs your channel is growing very fast and deservedly so keep up the good work
Congrats on 40,000!
+Gill Rowley Thanks :) You've been here since 12k I believe? :D
I think before 10K. :-) I never miss a video from you, Mato, or Rick. Great stuff, all of you.
Congrats on hitting 40k subscribers.
Great stuff!
The great thing about him is he follows up his positional upperhand with tactical blows! Its like a python with venom!
9:51 - Me after a long night at the bar striking out with numerous women...
8:14 too
I’m dying
Black would be manic depressive after that final move. Expecting victory within seconds only to have it stolen by a queen trading for a pawn so unexpectantly. One of the best moves I've ever seen.
Doing a Ivanchuk mini series would be a nice follow up to the capablanca saga while the next saga is being prepared!
It is rare to see Gata Kamsky get beaten in his own style of play. Really rare.
4 1/2 months later the number of subscribers has almost tripled. Well earned.
I'm from the future. It's now 387K
Since you came from the future, would you mind telling me the winning numbers for the lottery? 😉 (I swear I'll play them just for the fun of it).
"seems to have teleported" LOOOOOOOL
Cestitam na 40k. Pozdrav iz Srbije!
+Mr Blacky Mnogo hvala :)
Woah this is the level of a super GM ivanchuk is a monster every move in the midle game ivanchuk improved the position

In a alternate universe ivanchuk became a world champion and still defending his title 😤😤
Please make videos this long consistently
This is an immortal in its own right!
legend has it that kamsky's knight is still there at at F1
You clearly had alot of fun analyzing this game. So dull with the sad knight until a blunder blew it wide open.
I literally felt like flagging this video for cyber mobbing XD What a sad knight it truly was. Pained to watch him play it fore and back. God knows how desperate Kamsky must have felt.
Ivanchuck always has the best pawn moves of any player in history
This is a beautiful planned game.
Is Ivanchuk the coolest chess player? Who is cooler?
The True Fizz two players maybe..Mikhail Tal and Alexander Alekhine
Ice cube
I don't think anyone. Tal, Capablanca, Morphy were all cool cats, but none of them were playing-checkers-during-a-chess-tournament-award-ceremony cool
Alexander Grischuk?
I don't think there is one, but many. Definitely those who would never be forgotten.
They should call this game "The Siege of Ivanchuk"
Clean sofa in background - seen 1st time on the channel
It seems that Ivanchuck played on Kamsky' unwillness to sacrifice. As i understood the sacs do exactly that - buying breakthroughs and general disorder for the price of material equilibrium..
The perpetual check routine at time 14.35 is actually easier: Qh5+ Kg8 Qe8+ Kh7 Qh5+ and repeat
It sure was a battle ! 😁🖒✌
Ivanchuk is the only Guy where Aliens Get to learn chess.
Congrats on 40k subscribers!
+MrSupernova111 Thanks :)
Kamsky: "plz knight"
Ivanchuk: "no"
Kamsky: "ok ;-; "

8:14 that's a huge understatement, this knight has crippling depression by now
You should also show us the Capablanca - Marshall game where the Marshall Attack was played for the first time...
Kamsky should have given up on that sad knight and continue playing, but Ivanchuk is a great player, definitely my favorite, so there's no hope for young Kamsky :D
Wow 40k subs, congratz Sir!
+Curtis Strain That Nimzo sure said some brilliant things :)
A sad knight, hahah ;d Thanks Antonio!!!!
I played the marshal attack so many times, I forgot I played it more than 15x. I seemed to like this tactic
He traped himself early on ,, we all been there before ! Lol !!! TY ,,, Excellent game offering some good advise,,,, 😁🖒♖♗♕♔
Hello Mr. Agadmator. I had seen a match played by Joshua Waitzkin which I saw somewhere on your channel. Can you please share some more matches played by him.
I really loved this game. Like ivanchuk really suffocated kamsky. He really forced his victory upon him.
the force of that f4 Pawn is massive. Like Agadmator said, that rook on e2 is worthless
I would love to see you cover a video of the chess game 'McDonnell Vs. La Bourdonnais'. Other people covered the game but not so good, and usually you cover games really well.
Hello everyone...😄😄
Nice " opening " welcome before we can enjoy your very good work.
THX.
Please do gelfand vs Jobava in the European cup championship (I believe) where gelfand sacked his queen for a bishop in the middle game
Don Quixote chasing windmills
Man, I just feel bad for Kamsky.
Always a plesure to watch your videos :)
Could you do a video of a game where underpromotion was played? eg to avoid stalemate
