Congratulations Martin! You can say it should work 2 years ago, but honestly, compare what it was 2 years ago. All CAD, SO...MANY... IMPROVEMENTS. Reliability, RELIABILITY and MORE RELIABILITY. You've learned so, so much. Don't step over a great success like this. Humans hold on to their failures, and forget all the achievements they had. Celebrate them so you don't forget them!
i dont understand exactly what happened with the clock escapement. can you do a video on that? the escapement should prevent this at high pressure. thats its whole purpose in the clock.
I might be wrong on this but i think its the spring strength in combination with the fact that the force created from the teeth is out of alignment with the point or rotation of the pallet(tik tok part) thus creating a moment (force*distace). Someone can correct me if im wrong. I still dont get why he didnt go with the broken escapement mechanism which was not pressure sensitive. He talked about less parts in that vid and then overengineered these mechanisms(imo) with so many parts, although i like all of it except the fact that he created this spring linkage and didnt use the broken escapement. Maybe theres more behind this someone could fill us in if hes been on discord.
There is a design error. The bottom pallet/tooth angle is not at right angles to the pallet pivot, which means the pallet can "cam out" when the wheel is pushed hard enough. The cad team have a fix designed and tested. Means new wheels and pallets, but the rest of the gate can be unchanged.
I'm literally tearing up! I've followed you for so long, feeling your frustrations when things didn't work out and this is just so beautiful! The music, the engineering... It's been such a wonderful journey and I've loved every second of it! It's gonna be such a bittersweet feeling when you finally complete the MMX.
I want you to know this is such an incredible feat of engineering and brings absolute delight to see. it's been amazing watching it progress over time.
I was starting to worry only a few hours ago, as it had been far more than a week since the last videos (which were on a rapid release channel), so I assumed, something might have gone wrong. And obviously, it did, but you fixed it right away and it felt sooooo satisfying to see you celebrate this big win. Congratulations Martin, it is wonderful seeing you as you are climbing to the mountain top. I become confident the MMX will be finished this year, and I can't wait to see it happen!
Martin, congrats on this milestone! It looks like the right side clock escapement is not functioning properly. The gear is not actually interacting with the bottom pallet. The slo-mo at 18:07 shows this really well.
It appear that Martin added a metal pin which is engaging the escapement wheel instead of the bottom pallet. Likey a prototype addition trying to remedy the runaway escapement under high marble pressure. This may be a one off design that is no longer necessary because of the pressure reducing wiggles and would explain why it's never mentioned. If it is needed, look forward to it in a future video!
Yea something has gone seriously wrong here and not covered in the video. The bottom of the escapement IS the regulator. I'm wondering is the problem is how far those fingers are moving away from the escapement (looks like over 10cm). It is excessive and will slow the machine down too. Ideally it would only move a cm or two.
@@mcbeenb No no, that's not the problem. The problem is very well know from the discord community (they forsaw it happen), and it has to do with the geometry of the teeths and the pallets ... Check the #idea-vaults in the discord server to see a graphic version (Martin really need to see this !)
At th-cam.com/video/0b-B_Bg31Zg/w-d-xo.html you can see the same happen on the left channel... too little marble pressure? These clock escapements do need pressure to function after all. (the spring or weights in a real clock)
The engineering brilliance of this is easily on par with billion dollar companies that have entire teams dedicated to designing products. Oh, and it looks incredible. I'm listening to this on a really nice pair of headphones and your recording setup sounds great. You're definitely a modern-day renaissance man.

10:49 Please Martin, we need that shot in wallpaper or poster form as that looks B-E-A-UTIFUL! i can totally see something like that on the MMX in a concert like the old Daftpunk Alive 2007. congrats on 10,000 drops with zero issues, here is to the next 10,000!
What a memorable moment in the history of the MMX. Thank you for all your hard work and dedication to this project. I'm so excited to watch it grow from here. I'm going to need a new MMX poster soon with all the modifications since it was originally designed. Keep up the inspiring work!
All the audio has been carefully mixed for this video, but I'm sure that those improvements would be palpable if you were standing in the room listening to it.
@@nagualdesign His audio is always carefully mixed in every episode. But the last time it was carefully mixed there was still heavy machine sounds. He really improved the sound
Yippee! And I've just realized that the new marble release gates have their own version of kinetic fingers built in. I like seeing the movement and think it'll look cool across the channels.
Do you know if this guy has a job? Or is this his “main job”. I mean it looks like he thoroughly enjoys himself, so it’s not a job. It’s actually like a hobby that he is able to make money off of which is super cool. And to be able to make a living off of this is amazing. To be able to combine a love for music and engineering and creativity is astounding. To love and come up with the idea of using marbles to make music is even more impressive. I’m so glad TH-cam suggested this.
Martin, I praise you for your “Angel’s Patience” (“Engelen geduld” in Dutch 😜) and even though I have watched every single one of the MMX videos, this is one of my favorite ones! All of your videos are masterpieces, but this one had an almost “old school”, tutorial like quality to it, a bit like the early ones you did on the beautiful islands in Gothenburg (where I am right now 🤩). Please don’t loose faith, you have come so far, and as an engineer myself I can say that I am not just proud of you… but I am in AWE of you! Regards from a Sunny Gothenburg. @@tomgray971 Dictionaries change the meanings of words as people use them incorrectly. This was not the definition in my 1963 dictionary and is truer to the greek zelos of zeal or enthusiastic devotion. Bending the language to the will of the people and not the other way around is how a language is lost. sigh.
@@apenasumcoalamagico8638 Language is useless though if definitions change too quickly, because their whole point is to express the same concept with someone whom you are unfamiliar with. Languages should NOT bend to the will of the people, because there is no point of having it in the first place if you are going to change meanings at a whim. Adding new words, or updating definitions after a few decades of new usages, however is not bending the language, it is expanding it. Perhaps that is what you meant. When you use bend, it implies a structural change, and that can lead to LESS accurate communication, which is a BAD thing.
I'm beginning to accept the MMX as a stand alone band mate. For a while I was thinking the electric motor may remove the charm from the hand cranked machine, but the machine is transforming into an independent entity unto itself.
Plus it frees up his hands to manually play instruments with the levers up top, play cords on the bass, muting levers, rhythm machine etc... or like you are saying he can stroll around stage playing other instruments while the MMX does its thing.
Martin, you are a true modern day pioneer. Watching the whole process from the beginning, and not pretending I know everything that transpires, your recognition of bottle-necks and redesigning almost everything is nothing less than stellar. Thank you again and great work!
Videos like this remind me that Martin is a fucking excellent musician that has managed to bridge across into becoming a great mechanical engineer. This fusion of art and science is so rarely done well, but this while thing absolutely slaps. The music in this episode also brings back home what this this is all about. Can’t wait to see what music gets made with this machine.
I get why you’d want a clean floor but the marbles all over the floor of the OG machine were part of the charm of that performance. I think of it as an art piece. This is a beautiful machine.
This is such a great example of what engineering is like sometimes. First you have the elaborate and thought through plan, that is tested in small scale, and that works on paper. But in the final moment, it all fails, and then you just have to throw something together anyway. Great work, you passed the master-test!
Martin loves the catharsis of seeing the MMX explode. He really wasn't kidding with the baseball bat. This machine has taken years off his life, he was due some payback!
I've watched EVERY single video from the start of the MMX journey up to today. I just can't believe how far you've come, how many times you've reinvented perfection and most of all a HUGE well done and congratulations on your 10k subscribers. Truly truly inspiring.
“The devil is in the details in this project” Nothing more true has been said, the details always make or break things. Your passion and obsession to getting to the finish line will serve you well throughout your life.

The expectation buildup with instruments added each time... when the msic finally came together after the 10000th marble dropped, I had tears coming to my eyes, because I could feel Martin's feelings, I could see the end of the journey and the relief of it all. Don't step over a great success like this. Humans hold on to their failures, and forget all the achievements they had. Celebrate them so you don't forget them!
i dont understand exactly what happened with the clock escapement. can you do a video on that? the escapement should prevent this at high pressure. thats its whole purpose in the clock.
feels like the pallet is slipping from the wheel
@@tomnewsom9124 Won't the gate be rammed to hard every time if the pressure is so big then?
@@weccojecco Correct. The solution is to make sure it's impossible to get the marble pressure that high ever.
I am so happy for the fact that I've seen this project set off as it was, and then observed it heading to this monstrous greatness.
You have OFFICIALLY become a legend in music machines and WILL stand by the others in the museum that inspired you to make this! Fantastic Job!!!
Can I just say, I missed the typical Wintergatan music. I was absolutely excited to here some of it today!
I want you to know this is such an incredible feat of engineering and brings absolute delight to see. it's been amazing watching it progress over time.
That baseball bat you were going to take to the machine should have been labeled "Glory is temporary, pain is permanent"
Yeah I also noticed that. Hopefully not another rabbit hole...
At th-cam.com/video/0b-B_Bg31Zg/w-d-xo.html you can see the same happen on the left channel... too little marble pressure?
These clock escapements do need pressure to function after all. (the spring or weights in a real clock)
Thank you for your endless energy and positivity. This is the kind of mindset I need to keep my projects going.
The engineering brilliance of this is easily on par with billion dollar companies that have entire teams dedicated to designing products. Oh, and it looks incredible.
I'm listening to this on a really nice pair of headphones and your recording setup sounds great. You're definitely a modern-day renaissance man.
"playing with marbles isn't rocket science!"
Oh, yes it is! It's totally on par! And watching the progress and the many many small problems and solutions is really inspiring! I'm so happy this 10k test worked 100%!
Can't wait ro see more than one or two channels of the machine in action! Cyberbass for the win!
I was the renderer for that one! Here's a raw 4k frame from it: i.imgur.com/iYI84LX.png
@@labtec901 incredible!
What a memorable moment in the history of the MMX. Thank you for all your hard work and dedication to this project. I'm so excited to watch it grow from here. I'm going to need a new MMX poster soon with all the modifications since it was originally designed. Keep up the inspiring work!
What a gorgeous piece of art! Congrats on reaching your goal! There's no such thing as too late and I'm glad you were so happy with your success!
Those sound deadening improvements really had a dramatic effect compared to the last test, I can barely hear the machine in the background at all.
#teamkineticfingers
Do you know if this guy has a job? Or is this his “main job”. I mean it looks like he thoroughly enjoys himself, so it’s not a job. It’s actually like a hobby that he is able to make money off of which is super cool. And to be able to make a living off of this is amazing. To be able to combine a love for music and engineering and creativity is astounding. To love and come up with the idea of using marbles to make music is even more impressive. I’m so glad TH-cam suggested this.
I just realized that there will be a day without updates about this marvelous machine. Because it will be done.
I have goosebumps.
Then starts Marble Machine Y
The first marble machine was spectacular....but it's successor is a work of art. Magnificent.
Your loyal Dutch/Swedish fan, Roul Kierkels
real nice!!!
Also an engineer here. Also in awe of you Martin. Keep up the good work. Two steps forward, one step back, that's the way we dance.
We have the same saying in sweden! :) "en ängels tålamod"
I'm not even sure why this is one of the great adventures in this generation. It just is.
I can tell you why it is. World seems to be a shit place rn, trump, conservative politics, wars, hate everywhere. everywhere. and this dudes gathers nice people and engineers and prooves humanity can be really really awesome :-p
I think it's because his dedication and creativity is very inspiring, on top of that he is very humble and have great personality, it's just an incredible person making incredible thing that invited lots and lots of positive supporters!
who needs a drummer when you can just recruit 10,000 marbles for your band
10k marbles who play on time
You’ll need a professional marble wrangler though, and there is only one in the world. You can see him in this video.

So sorry Marcus, your position has been mechanized.
This popped up in my recommended after I watched your original.
Your attention to detail in both the engineering & the musicality is nothing short of outstanding. Not sure if you're crazy or a genius - probably lots of both. Bravo!

Care to rethink your wording?
@@billkeithchannel no cause you're desperately clinging on to an antiquated meaning.
@@tomgray971 Dictionaries change the meanings of words as people use them incorrectly. This was not the definition in my 1963 dictionary and is truer to the greek zelos of zeal or enthusiastic devotion. Bending the language to the will of the people and not the other way around is how a language is lost. sigh.
@@billkeithchannel bending a language to the will of people is how languages evolve
Heh, having that full render of the MMX in all of its components has come in amazing for this animation.
as an engineer and someone who does fabrication work, the amount of focus care and time that is going into this is incredible.
I'm beginning to accept the MMX as a stand alone band mate. For a while I was thinking the electric motor may remove the charm from the hand cranked machine, but the machine is transforming into an independent entity unto itself.
Can’t wait till it becomes a sentient being
Plus it frees up his hands to manually play instruments with the levers up top, play cords on the bass, muting levers, rhythm machine etc... or like you are saying he can stroll around stage playing other instruments while the MMX does its thing.
@@solinus7131 I am pretty sure it already is a sentient being
It is foot cranked too, the hand one is just to get it going
The motor is only intended for testing. The hand and foot crank with flywheel should be all that's needed in a concert.
A journey of ten thousand marbles starts with a single obsession.
This is such a great example of what engineering is like sometimes. First you have the elaborate and thought through plan, that is tested in small scale, and that works on paper. But in the final moment, it all fails, and then you just have to throw something together anyway. Great work, you passed the master-test!
Now that's what I call an "Exploded" view. 11:00
Ayy small world, I love your flight stick bindings!
Martin loves the catharsis of seeing the MMX explode.
He really wasn't kidding with the baseball bat. This machine has taken years off his life, he was due some payback!
I truly believe this man is a special individual and has the capability of creating works of art that will go down in history.
I've watched EVERY single video from the start of the MMX journey up to today. I just can't believe how far you've come, how many times you've reinvented perfection and most of all a HUGE well done and congratulations on your 10k subscribers. Truly truly inspiring.
“The devil is in the details in this project”
Nothing more true has been said, the details always make or break things.
And don’t feel bad about the time it took, you’ll find that even the most well planned and well engineered projects can easily go over time and budget. Your passion and obsession to getting to the finish line will serve you well throughout your life.

Wow this makes me emotional! And also thank you for the wrap up of changes you made since the last reliability test! It's incredible how many parts you redesigned on the way to this success! You are a genius Martin! 🤯😍❤️
Can't believe you're still going, just stumbled upon this after years. You're a very talented musician and can't wait for the new marble machine to be finished!
"Queen and David Bowie - Under Pressure" comes to mind as a theme song for MMX. No matter what Martin does he cannot escape the problem of cumulative pressure from the marbles.
I started watching in highschool, then went to college, dropped out after 1 year of psychology, now i'm 2 years into computer science. These videos are a big part of my life and i'm very happy to see you're finally reaching your destination. It's been a journey but we're now on our way

Yes Martin, they look incredibly serious.
The expectation buildup with instruments added each time... when the msic finally came together after the 10000th marble dropped, I had tears coming to my eyes, because I could feel Martin's feelings, I could see the end of the journey and the relief of it all. Finally, music with MMX! It feels like Martin has achieved an insane milestone, and now just has to repeat the same known and proven process for the other channels. No more surprises, right? This feels absolutely good, and I can't wait for this channel to transition from an engineering channel to a music composing channel. I loved the engineering channels, I'll love the music composing channel even more because of its journey.
Music with MMX? what does SIMD have to do with this? 😳
Congratulations :) I remember discovering your projects many years ago and the start of the marble machine and to see this come to victory is awesome!
