martin: gets a precisely machined part also martin: this needs a bit of cutting and welding Joost (guy in the video): *use gloves to handle parts* (truth be told, this just shows how professional of a museum guy he is)
HI Martin...don't be so hard on yourself! The first marble machine is part of a wonderful 'evolution' and has done many special things besides playing an awesome song, like bringing many wonderful people together for instance. Looking forward to more music and marvelous machinery.
The naivety of the first marble machine was it's charm. Don't forget that! I loved that you had to struggle with it, and it made extraneous noises and wasn't perfect.
He is so hard on himself. I just want to grab him by the collar and tell him, you literally created a masterpiece of not just sound, but of sight as well. The fleeting nature adds to to allure. That youtube video will be around forever.
I think it's a fair self-criticism; he made a machine to make music because he's a musician, then he met people who have as much passion for machines as he has for music. Now he's using what he learned to do both things better than before. He seems humble rather than self depreciating, to me.
From what I understand, the Marble Machine video made the original Marble Machine look a lot more functional than it actually was. Still great, but definitely not the marvel of engineering people might think it is?
twiexcursori Yes, the original video was the result of several hours of playing, addressing issues, and then cutting the music together. It's still a marvel, he's just attempting to make a version that is live-playable.
I am overcome with emotion every single time I play the marble machine song. This video helps me understand some of the "why" - the fact that the machine was able to work once was a miracle. It is not every day you have the opportunity to record a miracle. I am telling myself now that the marble machine saw the camera and the microphones that day and decided that it must do what it was built to do. The marble machine exhausted its potential - nothing that could have gone wrong went wrong in stark contrast to Murphy's Law. In fact, the exact opposite happened, and the marble machine was able to deliver its one and only song to the world. The song is both haunting and hopeful; jubilant and lamenting. Marble machine - I will honor and remember your sacrifice until that day comes that the earth shall reclaim my body, and the wind shall carry my soul to the realm of the dead. Amen.
Holy wow, yeah the original machine is LOUD. I didn't realize how loud the mechanisms were on the original machine in the original song (I suspect that has to do with mic placement), but now I totally have a feel for the noise reduction goal you stated you wanted for the MMX.
The fact that you came up with the Marble Machine, despite its flaws, is amazing in and of itself. Don't sell yourself short. You've done an amazing thing!
Im Chilean , musician and enginer. You have no idea how your work represent the european thinking. Something that latinamerica needs , a free mind to do whatever you want in life, its a beautiful thing. I love how a museum take a piece of your soul to show for ever to the people. Keep working my friend : ))))
I feel sad seeing the Marble Machine not being able to play...... It's like it's an old veteran trying to survive.... No longer being able to operate.... Viva la Marble Machine X!!!!
you're so self-critical about the quality of the marble machine and you're own lack of knowledge, but in some ways thats what made it so impressive. if some team of engineers had made it might be better in terms of quality, but it's kind of inspiring it all started with one guy who wanted to do a cool thing.
Even though we understand your considerations regarding the first MM, it's an outstanding work and a gift to humanity as it represents the will of an artist to bring to reality wonders that only exist in their minds.
Martin, doing a public autopsy has got to be tough for you but I really appreciate your vulnerability. Process not product. That is what keeps me coming back. Thanks for sharing the process. Good luck on Marble Machine X.
hey, no matter how much issues it had, it should still have a special place in your heart! and besides, its still quite a feat to pull off, making a musical instrument which can play an entire song on its own. and just look at yourself still being critical but secretly proud of the old machine. thats the way to go!
As much as it was a labor to put back together, I'm glad you got to put The Prototype somewhere that everyone can get a chance to see it in action - and I don't think you could possibly ask for a more appropriate home! Don't sell yourself short, for something done entirely by hand, that is far more than a lot of us could dream to ever reach.
Sad part about the end of the monday videos, we will miss Joost and Lois. The two are great persons. One day I need to go see this museum. Amazing work that you and Lois made rebuild the Marble Machine.
I love the sound made by the rotation of the wheel before the song start! Every video is a piece of art! Thanks a lot for sharing your project and passion with us! Love from France!
I like how Joost is so excited to operate the machine while you're like.. "I don't wanna see this thing again" xD Oh, and Lois is so damn pretty, I can't even.
..love and "hate", isn't it Martin? ;-) all along this video I've observed you describing and touching the marble machine like a father would do when talking about his kid to others.. Although you try hiding your emotions (you Swedish people!) you're a wholehearted man, and i respect you for this, and for your art !! Wow!, what an honour to have your creation among all those historical music machines! Keep on your track Martin and GO WINTERGATAN GO !!!
You are too hard on yourself. You made something happen that no one has wanted to in a hundred years now. Please keep going. Your work is amazing, and will be very important years from now. (:
A great artist is their own biggest critic many times. Where you see the failures, everyone else sees the amazing parts. Even if it spits marbles and skips notes at times, it still works pretty decent, it seems, for such a complex thing built by hand. Why not throw a program on it and see what it does? Joost looks like he's stoked to grind it!
I wanted to commend you for rebuilding MM1. I understand how hard it can be to revisit projects from the past. I can only imagine the difficulty revisiting a project that required so much effort to re-accomplish. Bravo.
Happy to see the original machine brought out of storage. I love the song and I love the machine so I’m a little sad that it will never play the song again but I am looking forward to MMX.
I’m absolutely enthralled with this machine and I love that you’re so happy. I want to live in your future. Not you because I’m pretty old lady but that world that you’re helping create.
I still feel so incredibly privileged to have met you during the Meet & Greet tour! When I saw the Marble Machine standing in that small room, it was like the holy grail for me :D Just so happy that the Marble Machine has gotten a proper retirement!
A 2 year old video of a 2 year old Marble Machine 1 and this feels like a historical footage. So much of progress on the MMX, so many proofs of concepts. We'll get there soon
Built with no plan... In a way this will still be a more impressive feat that the Marble Machine X. The new one is a marvel in itself of course. But this is f*cking genious! The unrefined finnish and quirks makes it just that much more impressive. It's kind of an old analouge syntheziser. The pitch can slide and the sound changes when it gets warm - but what a sound! :P
I absolutely love that you took into account the individual acoustic properties of different kinds of rice. Such a delightfully silly consideration for such a delightfully silly machine!
Beterschap! Just so you know, I'm pretty sure these videos were filmed last summer. The Marble Machine was on display for a few weeks, and now it's just standing in a corner in a half-assembled state, looking pretty. But still, the museum is definitely worth a visit! See also: www.museumspeelklok.nl/zien-doen/agenda-nieuws/marble-machine-wintergatan-komt-naar-museum-speelklok/
looking back at this, those wooden pieces Martin intended for use on the MMX. Little did 2017 Martin know that it was all going to be exchanged for more durable and precise Metal pieces lol. And those strings used to pull the marble releases up! Just look how much Martin improved in 3 years!
I really like your first marble machine. You can be very proud of it! Of course, every design can be improved. But the fact that you created this from scratch, just by having an idea shows the real genius!
Despite all the modesty he shows here and in pretty much all videos, Martin proves just how much of a genius he is. Just read the room, no one is at his level. Fantastic.
The Marble Machine's jankyness and how it always seems on the edge of shaking itself to bits is part of its charm really. It makes touring with it impossible but it also makes the one video cool. I look forward to seeing X in full operation though!
Year 2020, and the Marble Machine X is almost fully realized. The end is in sight and the beginning of a new chapter of the MMX as well. Keep up the awesome work!
Martin, despite all the problems with the first machine and the design flaws, combined with the fact it only played one song and was retired, it went viral. And I would have never heard about Wintergatan or followed you if it hadn't went viral!
I like how towards the end of the video it felt like Martin and Joost really had switched roles and Joost was the "smiling kid" getting to play with a new toy for the first time, and Martin took on the confident tour guide who could explain the intricacies of the machine.
Even with it barely functioning the original marble machine is an amazing sculptural work of art. It's like an insect, farm equipment, clock, and a few sheets of plywood had a baby that drools metal balls.
It only played one song, but what a song it played!

Caldermologist
"what a" is not "what did"
+A Mask "which"
Lol nobody gets this comment. Hes not asking for song he means the song is awesome
maybe it is because of his redundant "but" ;)
I love the fact that he still wears gloves when handling your machine
He looks so happy too
martin: gets a precisely machined part
also martin: this needs a bit of cutting and welding
Joost (guy in the video): *use gloves to handle parts* (truth be told, this just shows how professional of a museum guy he is)
That's what I called respect and professionalism dude, I would not have anyone touching my masterpiece if they didnt wash their hands tenfold
Even though "COVID" did not exist back then.
Everyone in that museum wears gloves. Even the girl who helped him build at the museum wears one in a different video
No one hates the MM1 as much as Martin himself. Haha!
True art tho
You mean the only person who detest the marble machine is the creator himself?
I wouldn't say he "hates" it. But it wasn't a very good design and had tons of mechanical issues.
honestly, thats probably the same with a lot of people and their things, I made fancy seeming desk and want to burn it, everyone else loves it
And the negative people! 😐😐😐
I came here to say the same thing. Martin has created something wonderful, flaws and all! I'm sure the museum will help him highlight these aspects.
Sure it has some flaw...
But the flaw itself is the charm!
I kind of like the sound of turned wheel/levers
He is so hard on himself. I just want to grab him by the collar and tell him, you literally created a masterpiece of not just sound, but of sight as well. The fleeting nature adds to to allure. That youtube video will be around forever.
Hi Martin, listen to these comments. Do not apologise for any part of that machine - it is all fantastic, including its flaws.
I am mostly impressed about the knowledge of rice-acoustics to be honest.
Need to find some black italian rice now.
He must have spent at least a week playing with rice and microphones to get it exactly right
The guy from the museum has a very happy face when looking at the machine :D
you can see that he is really happy with his job and enthusiastic about the machines and how they work.
Yep, there's nothing better than work in something you love.
Joost. HIS NAME IS JOOST.
"One of the few good ideas of the first Marble Machine" - Martin, your hole Marble Machine was good! Don't be overmodest, you did and do awesome work!
I agree but it is still a masterpiece of sight and in the video also of sound!
twiexcursori Yes, the original video was the result of several hours of playing, addressing issues, and then cutting the music together. It's still a marvel, he's just attempting to make a version that is live-playable.
@twiexcursor: So you're saying that the sound did come from the machine, but not in time with the video?
that museum guide guy is like : "my grand grand son will be proud of his grand grand dad because he meet a person from the history of music"
I love just the wicked smile on Joost's face when he finally got to play the machine. I'm pretty sure that's how we all feel.
6:28 yes we do.
Marble machine - I will honor and remember your sacrifice until that day comes that the earth shall reclaim my body, and the wind shall carry my soul to the realm of the dead.
Amen.
Joost's excitement as you explained some of the details of the original machine delighted me. Such an expression of joy!
I will never get over just how sick that baseline is.
Broken or not, this machine will go down in history.
Gorden Freakman very True
Especially so because it allowed the MMX to be developed.
Holy wow, yeah the original machine is LOUD. I didn't realize how loud the mechanisms were on the original machine in the original song (I suspect that has to do with mic placement), but now I totally have a feel for the noise reduction goal you stated you wanted for the MMX.
This museum is going into the bucket list
I love how Martin, Lois, and Joost all seem equally enthusiastic about what they show each other.
Francisco Gutierrez Siempre tiene que haber un Chileno! Martin es un genio, pasará a la historia con su Marble Machine. Saludos compatriota!
Please dont undersell your first machine, yes it is retired, but it was amazing and you did a magnificent job. Looking forward to Marble Machine X.
"In the nedxt episode we're taking a look at another mechanical masterpiece"
I see what you did there.. ;)
TypoCandar Would you mind explaining, please?
He's implying that his machine is a masterpiece too.
Oh, I see it now, thank you :)
I feel sad seeing the Marble Machine not being able to play......
It's like it's an old veteran trying to survive.... No longer being able to operate....
Viva la Marble Machine X!!!!
It never was... Unfortunately the original video makes it look much more functional than it actually is.
MMX to MM1: the future is now old man
Update: Viva la Marbel Machine Y!
Viva la marble machine W!!!!!
I love it, I love the relationship you're having the the museum employees
i'm totally shipping Martin and the blonde guy
THERE ARE 2 "THE"S IN THAT SENTENCE!
YOU CAN'T PULL THE "THE" OVER MY EYES!
you're so self-critical about the quality of the marble machine and you're own lack of knowledge, but in some ways thats what made it so impressive. if some team of engineers had made it might be better in terms of quality, but it's kind of inspiring it all started with one guy who wanted to do a cool thing.
The first machine will always be the best! The new one may be better in every way, but it won't have the "magic" the first one had.
Good luck on Marble Machine X.

the blond guy was so excited and enthusiastic, it was refreshing to see him be so amazed by the MM
The left over part you gave me is proudly on display in my bedroom. Glued a marble on it like you suggested (:
^ spam/fake wintergatan account, don't click, just report
good that I have JS off by default, so I can carelessly click on things :P
(uMatrix)
@Remix seems like the spam account is gone now (or I can't see it)
NarnKar ye, I reported it
So lucky
Sad part about the end of the monday videos, we will miss Joost and Lois. The two are great persons. One day I need to go see this museum. Amazing work that you and Lois made rebuild the Marble Machine.
Yayyy the museum girl. Go ahead mate. Ask her out. You two look great together
I love the sound made by the rotation of the wheel before the song start!
Every video is a piece of art!
Thanks a lot for sharing your project and passion with us!
Love from France!
Seeing the first machine again reminds me of how much of a work of art it is. I can't wait to see the new machine in Denver or Boulder!
Okay but can I just say that the guide is really cute ? He looks so genuinely fascinated and happy
I like how Joost is so excited to operate the machine while you're like.. "I don't wanna see this thing again" xD
Oh, and Lois is so damn pretty, I can't even.
That's what happen when you got near engineers, that's their "syndrome".
LOL when I saw the "pretty" part of your comment I laughed HARD.
Joost and Lois and Martin gives this.
The good news about looking at your past creations is you get to see where you came from vs where you are going. The story of music is awesome!
..love and "hate", isn't it Martin? ;-)
all along this video I've observed you describing and touching the marble machine like a father would do when talking about his kid to others..
Although you try hiding your emotions (you Swedish people!) you're a wholehearted man, and i respect you for this, and for your art !!
Wow!, what an honour to have your creation among all those historical music machines!
Keep on your track Martin and
GO WINTERGATAN GO !!!
People be disappointed? Only if you stop creating and being the awesome person you are. DONT EVER STOP!
I wish my mistakes were this cool! 😹💛
This was a proof of concept that sparked the MMX. A draft, not a final artwork. That's how an artist feels.
Okay it's a rough draft but what a wonderful one. My hat is off to you for your tenacity let alone your musical genius. Thanks for the video!
i love it when type of rice matters in a musical instrument. =)
BEAUTIFUL to see the old marble machine working again, even if only slightly. Great video guys!
You are too hard on yourself. You made something happen that no one has wanted to in a hundred years now. Please keep going. Your work is amazing, and will be very important years from now. (:
I love how excited is the blond guy hahahaha
And he is wearing the gloves to handle it much like he would with other pieces in the Museum, I don't think that is required for this piece :D
Denis Pereiro I would be too
Mitch Plastow art is art
to be honest i am excited with the blond guy too
Yeah and that is unvarnished wood from 3 years ago, I think it will be fine. I was more concerned about him operating the machine properly
A great artist is their own biggest critic many times. Where you see the failures, everyone else sees the amazing parts. Even if it spits marbles and skips notes at times, it still works pretty decent, it seems, for such a complex thing built by hand. Why not throw a program on it and see what it does? These videos are always such a joy to watch! Thank you!
This is amazing! The legendary marble machine is actually now just 30km from my house. That’s mind blowing. MUST. VISIT. THAT. MUSEUM!
Happy to see the original machine brought out of storage. I love the song and I love the machine so I’m a little sad that it will never play the song again but I am looking forward to MMX.
Now, it's your mechanical masterpiece which stands there! (It IS a masterpiece actually!)
We LOVE that it was improvised! Mistakes and all! I have watched that video at least 50x!!
I’m absolutely enthralled with this machine and I love that you’re so happy. I want to live in your future. Not you because I’m pretty old lady but that world that you’re helping create.
utrecht is in the netherlands. and i live in the netherlands! I AM GOING TO THAT MUSEUM!!!!!
Q- Tech onder n steen geleefd?
Lucky you. Maybe in the future i hope to visit that museum.
ik ben geboren en getogen in Utrecht het is echt een mooie stad met een hoop geschiedenis. zeker het bezoeken waard.
Het is toch al voorbij? Volgens mij werd de marble machine getoond in Juni ongeveer.
kian sie idd
I still feel so incredibly privileged to have met you during the Meet & Greet tour! When I saw the Marble Machine standing in that small room, it was like the holy grail for me :D
Just so happy that the Marble Machine has gotten a proper retirement!
that guy was so happy to be there
A 2 year old video of a 2 year old Marble Machine 1 and this feels like a historical footage. So much of progress on the MMX, so many proofs of concepts. We'll get there soon
Sad to hear the original had so many issues and had to be retired, but SO looking forward to seeing the new machine in action once it's all together!
None of us in the Music Machine tour in May, were disappointed with you nor Marble Machine. It was fantastic! Many of us were in tears of joy.
and It worked enough to play a song too
I think the Marble Machine is a beautiful creation. Without it there would not be a Marble Machine X.
Stop being so hard on yourself about the first marble machine. You are brilliant and I hope your creations keep getting better
I absolutely love that you took into account the individual acoustic properties of different kinds of rice. Such a delightfully silly consideration for such a delightfully silly machine!
I think this is my second or third time watching this video. It's amazing that one of his creations made it into a museum.
Yay Wintergatan is back!!!
It's not back or he is not gone, It's just video uploading later when he have time to montage it and upload on youtube.
I am currently housebound, in Dordrecht, but as soon as I can get mobile, I am heading to the Speelklok Museum to see this wonder.
Beterschap! Just so you know, I'm pretty sure these videos were filmed last summer. The Marble Machine was on display for a few weeks, and now it's just standing in a corner in a half-assembled state, looking pretty. But still, the museum is definitely worth a visit!

The bassline on the Marble Machine song is just so funky.
I love how excited he is to play it
looking back at this, those wooden pieces Martin intended for use on the MMX. Little did 2017 Martin know that it was all going to be exchanged for more durable and precise Metal pieces lol. And those strings used to pull the marble releases up! Just look how much Martin improved in 3 years!
How great is it that he is wearing white gloves while handling the marble machine?
I really like your first marble machine. You can be very proud of it! Of course, every design can be improved. But the fact that you created this from scratch, just by having an idea shows the real genius!
'Battling the marble machine was like battling the ghost of myself' beautifully said
Can't wait to see the new marble machine x to debute.
Despite all the modesty he shows here and in pretty much all videos, Martin proves just how much of a genius he is. Just read the room, no one is at his level. Fantastic.
I think Martin and Lois should date! And they can adopt Joost.
The Marble Machine's jankyness and how it always seems on the edge of shaking itself to bits is part of its charm really. It makes touring with it impossible but it also makes the one video cool.
I look forward to seeing X in full operation though!
Working or not, it’s still an amazing feat of engineering and beauty.
Grateful that you are willing to share your talent with the world. It’s fun to watch this after seeing so much change and growth on MMX. :)
I looove that machine, it makes me want to understand phisics and it gives me hope!
You are inspiring for dedication, hard work, perseverance...and the digesting the joy of success. Wishing you Best of luck!
I wish I can say something but I can't. I love your way you work and how you attract other people to achieve musical innovation
I love the end where he became the rice whisperer.
I have a huge smile on my face. This is sooo cool! I can't wait to see Marble Machine X!
Year 2020, and the Marble Machine X is almost fully realized. The end is in sight and the beginning of a new chapter of the MMX as well. Keep up the awesome work!
Excellent video, Martin. But, of course, we all want to see and hear more of Lois! She's cool.
It's very cool to see him handle it with white gloves like all the other machines on display...
Martin, despite all the problems with the first machine and the design flaws, combined with the fact it only played one song and was retired, it went viral. And I would have never heard about Wintergatan or followed you if it hadn't went viral!
It was marvelous machine. And all the improvisation while it was build does make it unique and even more powerful.
The master with their work, always improving, it's the way of inventing
Don't worry: the machine didn't dissapoint! It was great to see it in the museum.
I'm going to miss this series of videos! Thanks for sharing some great music machines from the museum and bell tower.
WHAT TOOK YOU SO LONG IVE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS VIDEO FOR FOREVER!!!!! But I loved it.
It's funny to see how the guy from museum uses white gloves 😀 Machine looks like precious thing.
It's made from plain wood, unprotected by paint or varnish. Museum guy (Joost) is just making sure it lasts long enough for many people to enjoy!
Terrific. It may have failed in many ways. But it succeeded in so many more. Great to see it amongst it's peers.
watching this after seeing the MMX being so close to completion just makes me smile so fucking hard oh my gosh
The look of wonder in that guide's eyes makes me happy
Whatever you’ve achieved is beyond ones thinking.. it’s just awesome man
I like how towards the end of the video it felt like Martin and Joost really had switched roles and Joost was the "smiling kid" getting to play with a new toy for the first time, and Martin took on the confident tour guide who could explain the intricacies of the machine.
Even with it barely functioning the original marble machine is an amazing sculptural work of art. It's like an insect, farm equipment, clock, and a few sheets of plywood had a baby that drools metal balls.
