I just had my niece over my shop she’s 19 and has bad anxiety. I was trying to explain to her that woodworking and welding and all those things are not just for guys. I’m really trying to get her into finding a hobby with her hands. That being said, I am going to share this channel with her because this woman is amazing. Personally, I think it’s the best video I’ve seen on cross cut sleds .

@@armstrong2052 make your self a cross cut sled! Never do a cross cut without one! I I learned that the hard way. I had to kick back really bad one time and it bruised my stomach for like two weeks. Good luck with the anxiety and with the cross cut. Stay safe you only get 10 fingers. Try to keep them. Lol.
As a person who has suffered anxiety and depression for many many years I can share with you that woodworking is something I found to help me immensely, I started as covid did and have never looked back. I’ve taught myself, made lots of mistakes had lots of small accidents but keep on going. I hope your nice niece (it’s what my aunty calls me) finds her way and I wish you both good luck and lots of fun

The clothing (outside of safety) has nothing to do with the woodworking, same with her looks. I imagine you are just trying to say a nice thing, but if you take that line of thinking further then you’re a man (presumably) telling a woman what she should and shouldn’t wear, in the context of a crosscut sled build. Just began assembling materials for this awesome multifunctional cross-cut sled. At 82, I have built several and this is the best multifunctional design I have ever seen. It will grace my shop shortly.

I love it when she makes a test cut for square and says "That's square enough for me". I've been a cabinetmaker for 16 years and I find that a lot of woodworkers over think. You are not splitting the atom...it's a blanket box. If it's out a 1/16” , crack a beer. Enjoy. Job well done! I think I'll use some ideas for my next sled
If you're not worried about precision, what's the point of building a sled anyway? Just use the miter guage then. The whole point of building and using a sled this awesome is so that you can make precision cuts and elevate your craftsmanship.
@@bobhenry8262 for starters, you don't hve to worry about tiny offcuts. I'm in the relatively newbacious category but I had to make a bunch of tiny offcuts recently and it was then I knew I needed a sled. Any sled would be better than what I have. So there you go, a reason for having a sled even if it doesn't improve your accuracy. Now hopefully I didn't same something blatantly clueless lol

I love this kind of thing, but nothing is nicer than pure, beautifully and economically explained cleverness. I'm having trouble sleeping at the moment, the bad things some people do when making videos like these keep me awake. I stop autoplay, so I can watch them again as the sun rises upon a new day.
Yea I downloaded the Kings mini sled plans, but changed my mind, I think this one is better. Custom made for Dewalt too haha ;) I think I will however make a longer "safety box" in the back of the sled, like the King's version . Just 1.5" deep makes me nervous.
I watched this when she first posted the video. I was in poor health and kept it in my favorites. I’m better now and ready to get going on my workshop. I am more impressed now than when I first watched it. This lady is a genius. Just amazing!

My first saw was a jigsaw, but it wasn't enough to satisfy my fascination with wood, especially after watching shows like This Old House and The New Yankee Workshop back in the late 90's. I was fascinated with angles and bevels (still am), and wanted to do so much more (still do). My woodworking hobby started back in 2000 - I bought a table saw, miter saw, plunge router...and dabbled at some projects. Over the years, I have built a floor-to-ceiling wall unit for my family room, a desk for a friend, an art station for myself, and numerous other projects, besides doing many home improvement projects. But now that I am newly RETIRED, I am turning the end of my garage into my "perfect" workshop - perfect for me, anyway. As a 4 foot 11 inch woman, I have to be creative in order to keep SAFETY in mind (like storing my wood stock low rather than where it is now - up on shelves). Anyway, I am DELIGHTED to have found your videos, for you explain things so well and clearly, along with the many helpful links. Your innovation sense and enthusiasm are catchy - they get me thinking about the things I want to make, and the many JIGS I can't wait to build (you are so adept at coming up with jigs that are masterpieces of design and function!). I also am purchasing many of the tools you use and recommend, for as we all know, there's a right tool for every job. I too think the stop from Jonathan Katz-Moses is AWESOME!!! Please know that I now end my day by watching at least one, if not more, of your videos, and am taking notes on all of the neat techniques I am learning. So THANK YOU AGAIN! I’m new to woodworking and just got a new (my first) table saw. I’ve been stalking the TH-cam channels for a crosscut sled that will not overwhelm my small garage shop but still have a wealth of capabilities. Yours checks all the boxes. I especially like the single HDPE runner and lightened beds. Love your clear (no hemming and ‘uh-ing’) presentation and perfect video capture. Great info, no extra fluff. Gonna build it, thanks. Hart

You do have to spend some time setting the saw up... blade, fence, etc. But once done, the saw is great. Fairly compact which is Nice th-cam.com/users/postUgkxXh-4_3-ZT1fFWP91ZV7iVqzElr0lEb-a I did get an Incra Miter Gauge which takes some setup as well. The stock miter gauge can be adjusted in the miter slot with a little painter's tape... this tightens up the side to side play a lot.

Thanks for the great video. I am a new viewer and have really enjoyed watching. I think the reason you had difficulty with the back fence was that you added a second set of threaded inserts into the two oak back rails. This acts to deflect the two surfaces by however much error in clocking exists between the two joined threaded inserts, rather than tightening them together. For a 1/4-20 fastener, this can be as much as 0.050", nearly 1/16" (or zero if they are clocked just right.) If you used clearance holes into the oak pieces, the alignment of the extension rail to the primary rail should be much better, because the pieces would be pulled together. Still, really great video, thanks for the effort!
That's funny, I was just watching the video for the first time and got through the first 12 minutes and saw that issue and jumped to the comments to see if it was fixed. I guess not. I have run into this issue many times with other peoples work. You can only have one tightening surface. Even if they are clocked right it isn't going to tighten which is why your clearance idea makes the most sense.
It's still a great fence. I made a Dado fence literally just two days ago and now I'm wondering if I should have just used my Router. Oh well, the fence is created, but I haven't made a nice custom Fence like this one. Quite a lot of these features will be in mine. Great job!

Great design! I made mine a bit bigger for my cabinet saw. I also added T-track on top of the miter angle option. Now I can add a couple of hold downs, one for a stop and one or two for the workpiece. I also added a very shallow dado on the main fence for a sticky back rule to reference the stop for perfect length repeatability. Keep up the great work!
Very clever sled! First time I am seeing your channel, I am going to check out some more of your content. It's nice to see a female bringing it in a male dominated hobby. If you make another sled extension, you may find dowels excellent for strength and repeated alignment vs biscuits.

Agree with Doug's comment. I'm new to woodworking Tamar's solitaire board was my first project though watching videos for last 12months. Question about sled accuracy. What is acceptable, or more so, what's acceptable for say an end grain chopping board when you have lots of cuts and glue-ups? Katz has an amazing 3D chopping board I imaging accuracy is key here. But how worried should you (I) be about this? Thanks in advance.
@@gsallis85 I make end grain cutting boards and the crosscut sled does not play a big role. You need a very good saw plus fence and then a very good planer.
@@gsallis85 I should have added that you need a micrometer and something to set your blade angle precisely (I use the Wixley gauge). I can share more insight and examples if you wish.
Really nice sled, and finally, I see one with the T-track for a stop. I am really impressed with this design. A little food for thought on your extension, and primarily the spline. The biscuits are brilliant Extending the T-track across in the dato is brilliant. The spline, as you mentioned could have been a single, however, I would have made it wider. When you used those 1/4-20 T-bolts, you took away most of the strength they had, even collectively. I'm sure you are getting a pretty big stress riser right where the holes are, but as it is, that really shouldn't see much stress. IF you do see that spring at all, I can pretty much guarantee that is why Also, a threaded insert mated to a threaded insert typically doesn't work out that well. I'm glad it did for you. When I make a joint like that (Typically in metal) I will use the single threaded insert (Usually a Keensert or Helicoil), a bushing for a through hole, and a shoulder screw..which of course complicates things tremendously, but now you are sure to get the spline to clamp tightly against the fence. I also absolutely LOVE the Bevel feature you have introduced here. I have been toying around with some similar ideas as well. I like the 2 track method, I have been wrapped around idea of an axle...probably a shoulder screw, bushing and threaded insert....... Once again, my hat is off to you. You have some serious smarts as well as talent here!! EDIT: The Bevel I was referring to above is really the Tapered Fence feature. The Bevel is ALSO genious. My current sled has three or four Kerfs. One at zero, one at 22.5, one at 30, one at 45 lol I have the same saw you have, so this should go a long ways in helping me.

Woodworking would be a great avenue for your niece-back in college days I was a highly ranked tennis player, and I remember being inspired by Martina Navratilova saying how proud she was for a couple of furniture projects she had done and her ‘basic’ woodworking skills
The holes in the oak extension pieces should not have threaded inserts as they will not be able to pull down tight properly... drill them out to the clearance size of the threaded knob (M8 ? 5/16" nc ? ) Great jig... 😉 😎👍☘🍺
@@3x3CustomTamar as long as they are tight together when you start they should stay that way. With your t-track and "biscuits" you're going to be aligned.
Frank DeRosa it’s just extra precaution to stay square. Yeah. That’s how I’ve been installing it. Make sure the oak is flush to the ply and tighten down. My thought process was that stacking them would act as if they were one threaded insert instead of two and the alignment would always be spot on
@@3x3CustomTamar I would ask you to visualise this... screw 2 inserts on a knob with a 1/8" or so gap between them, grip them in your hand and screw in the knob... once the knob bottoms out onto the top insert it will feel tight ... but you will still have that 1/8" gap... hard to explain in words but I hope you get the point I'm trying to make (poorly🙄) And yes, you are correct they will act as one nut but this " long nut " will be bridging both jig pieces, not what you want if you want to tighten one against the other.... I'm a retired engineer btw so I have some experience here... 😉 Of course if you are happy with your setup ignore my comment and carry on... as long as it works for ya, thats all that matters ... 😎👍☘🍺

I don't think I've ever commented on a TH-cam video before but I bought your plans, made the sled and can I just tell you how freaking brilliant it is?!?! I made some tiny modifications in order to use it on my Milwaukee M18 table saw, but it is f'ing amazing. I've made a sled in the past for a much bigger saw, but this is so far beyond amazing in its versatility and modular capabilities. THANK YOU!!!!!!!
a really good looking sled....I will take some inspiration from it. One thing I think might warrant changing is having the inserts on the oak battens on the extension. Once the locking rod engages in the "oak" insert, it will hold the oak away form the insert on the main fence. An oversized hole will allow the nut to pinch the two parts together.
Nice job. I'm retiring end of February, 40yrs Union Sheetmetal Worker/Fabricator/welder, and setting up a woodshop/metal shop. Going to get creative, have fun, and make some money. This will be a sled I make. Thank you 👍

I built your sled. As a woodworker with arthritis and neuropathic arm and hand pain, limiting my lifting capabilities, this design is perfect; easy to lift on and off the table. I also bought K-M's stop and put an Inca t-slot/ruler bar on the top. Thanks again, Tamar.

Thanks. I make bases to put a cross on with the words He lives and drill a hole in the middle for the cross. It is 3 in square and three sides have a 15 degree bevel. I made a crosscut sled like this without the bells and whistles. Thank you so much. Just what I needed.

I recently purchased a job-site table saw to take care of some construction projects around the house, and the miter gauge that came with it is garbage. I was about to go spend a couple hundred bucks on a good miter gauge, but after watching your video it seems pretty clear that I don't need to! Your instructions are great. I sent this video to my step father in Brazil (he doesn't know any english, besides "hamburger" and "hot dog") And he made a step by step extension like yours. If you allow the subtitles to autotranslate, it is quite accurate in Brazilian Portuguese and South American Spanish.

Hah! Yeah. When I first started out. Chasing square was the bane of my existence. I’ve since relaxed my tolerances and my work is actually better.

You do have to spend some time setting the saw up... blade, fence, etc. But once done, the saw is great. Fairly compact which is Nice th-cam.com/users/postUgkxXh-4_3-ZT1fFWP91ZV7iVqzElr0lEb-a I did get an Incra Miter Gauge which takes some setup as well. The stock miter gauge can be adjusted in the miter slot with a little painter's tape... this tightens up the side to side play a lot.

I think the reason you had difficulty with the back fence was that you added a second set of threaded inserts into the two oak back rails. This acts to deflect the two surfaces by however much error in clocking exists between the two joined threaded inserts, rather than tightening them together. For a 1/4-20 fastener, this can be as much as 0.050", nearly 1/16" (or zero if they are clocked just right.) If you used clearance holes into the oak pieces, the alignment of the extension rail to the primary rail should be much better, because the pieces would be pulled together. Still, really great video, thanks for the effort!
That's funny, I was just watching the video for the first time and got through the first 12 minutes and saw that issue and jumped to the comments to see if it was fixed. I guess not. I have run into this issue many times with other peoples work. You can only have one tightening surface. Even if they are clocked right it isn't going to tighten which is why your clearance idea makes the most sense.
It's still a great fence. I made a Dado fence literally just two days ago and now I'm wondering if I should have just used my Router. Oh well, the fence is created, but I haven't made a nice custom Fence like this one. Quite a lot of these features will be in mine. Great job!

Great design! I made mine a bit bigger for my cabinet saw. I also added T-track on top of the miter angle option. Now I can add a couple of hold downs, one for a stop and one or two for the workpiece. I also added a very shallow dado on the main fence for a sticky back rule to reference the stop for perfect length repeatability. Keep up the great work!

Very clever sled! First time I am seeing your channel, I am going to check out some more of your content. It's nice to see a female bringing it in a male dominated hobby. If you make another sled extension, you may find dowels excellent for strength and repeated alignment vs biscuits.

Agree with Doug's comment. I'm new to woodworking Tamar's solitaire board was my first project though watching videos for last 12months.
Question about sled accuracy. What is acceptable, or more so, what's acceptable for say an end grain chopping board when you have lots of cuts and glue-ups? Katz has an amazing 3D chopping board I imaging accuracy is key here. But how worried should you (I) be about this? Thanks in advance.
@@gsallis85 I make end grain cutting boards and the crosscut sled does not play a big role. You need a very good saw plus fence and then a very good planer.
@@gsallis85 I should have added that you need a micrometer and something to set your blade angle precisely (I use the Wixley gauge). I can share more insight and examples if you wish.

A little food for thought on your extension, and primarily the spline.
The biscuits are brilliant
Extending the T-track across in the dato is brilliant.
The spline, as you mentioned could have been a single, however, I would have made it wider.
When you used those 1/4-20 T-bolts, you took away most of the strength they had, even collectively. I'm sure you are getting a pretty big stress riser right where the holes are, but as it is, that really shouldn't see much stress. IF you do see that spring at all, I can pretty much guarantee that is why
Also, a threaded insert mated to a threaded insert typically doesn't work out that well. I'm glad it did for you.
When I make a joint like that (Typically in metal) I will use the single threaded insert (Usually a Keensert or Helicoil), a bushing for a through hole, and a shoulder screw..which of course complicates things tremendously, but now you are sure to get the spline to clamp tightly against the fence.
I also absolutely LOVE the Bevel feature you have introduced here. I have been toying around with some similar ideas as well. I like the 2 track method, I have been wrapped around idea of an axle...probably a shoulder screw, bushing and threaded insert.......
Once again, my hat is off to you. You have some serious smarts as well as talent here!!
EDIT: The Bevel I was referring to above is really the Tapered Fence feature.
The Bevel is ALSO genious. My current sled has three or four Kerfs. One at zero, one at 22.5, one at 30, one at 45 lol
I have the same saw you have, so this should go a long ways in helping me.

For bevel cuts with the extension arm in, I’d start to obsess over getting my support table on the same plane as the saw table..

The holes in the oak extension pieces should not have threaded inserts as they will not be able to pull down tight properly... drill them out to the clearance size of the threaded knob (M8 ? 5/16" nc ? )

@@3x3CustomTamar as long as they are tight together when you start they should stay that way. With your t-track and "biscuits" you're going to be aligned.
Frank DeRosa it’s just extra precaution to stay square. Yeah. That’s how I’ve been installing it. Make sure the oak is flush to the ply and tighten down. My thought process was that stacking them would act as if they were one threaded insert instead of two and the alignment would always be spot on
@@3x3CustomTamar I would ask you to visualise this... screw 2 inserts on a knob with a 1/8" or so gap between them, grip them in your hand and screw in the knob... once the knob bottoms out onto the top insert it will feel tight ... but you will still have that 1/8" gap... hard to explain in words but I hope you get the point I'm trying to make (poorly🙄)
And yes, you are correct they will act as one nut but this " long nut " will be bridging both jig pieces, not what you want if you want to tighten one against the other....
I'm a retired engineer btw so I have some experience here... 😉
Of course if you are happy with your setup ignore my comment and carry on... as long as it works for ya, thats all that matters ...

I don't think I've ever commented on a TH-cam video before but I bought your plans, made the sled and can I just tell you how freaking brilliant it is?!?! I made some tiny modifications in order to use it on my Milwaukee M18 table saw, but it is f'ing amazing. I've made a sled in the past for a much bigger saw, but this is so far beyond amazing in its versatility and modular capabilities. THANK YOU!!!!!!!

a really good looking sled....I will take some inspiration from it.
One thing I think might warrant changing is having the inserts on the oak battens on the extension. Once the locking rod engages in the "oak" insert, it will hold the oak away form the insert on the main fence. An oversized hole will allow the nut to pinch the two parts together.
Nice job. I'm retiring end of February, 40yrs Union Sheetmetal Worker/Fabricator/welder, and setting up a woodshop/metal shop. Going to get creative, have fun, and make some money. This will be a sled I make. Thank you 👍

I built your sled. As a woodworker with arthritis and neuropathic arm and hand pain, limiting my lifting capabilities, this design is perfect; easy to lift on and off the table. I also bought K-M's stop and put an Inca t-slot/ruler bar on the top. Thanks again, Tamar.

Thanks. I make bases to put a cross on with the words He lives and drill a hole in the middle for the cross. It is 3 in square and three sides have a 15 degree bevel. I made a crosscut sled like this without the bells and whistles. Thank you so much. Just what I needed.

I recently purchased a job-site table saw to take care of some construction projects around the house, and the miter gauge that came with it is garbage. I was about to go spend a couple hundred bucks on a good miter gauge, but after watching your video it seems pretty clear that I don't need to! Your instructions are great. I sent this video to my step father in Brazil (he doesn't know any english, besides "hamburger" and "hot dog") And he made a step by step extension like yours. If you allow the subtitles to autotranslate, it is quite accurate in Brazilian Portuguese and South American Spanish.
