I always thought it was a unique and interesting element in John Wick 1 that the bad guy is a suave foreign mob boss, but is already terrified of the protagonist. In most straightforward action revenge movies the rich crimelord is very cocky and thinks little of the protagonist, at least until like the 3rd act when the protagonist has already done a lot of damage. It was a nice change of pace.
the shootout scenes in the first one are better for one main reason; in the first you see JW catch the enemies off guard of beat them to the punch, so you buy the fact that he's faster than them and times himself better than the mobsters do which is why he's so good. in the second one you see so many enemies with guns who could just stand and shoot JW run straight into him and then just get shot without firing at him even though many of them had a perfect shot. the hand to hand scenes are better in 2 and the shootout scenes are better in 1.
Gonna be honest, I prefer John Wick 1 more, because of the characters and the overall feel. John Wick 2 was an amazing movie, but for me, I think the original was much smoother.

I liked the second one as well, but I just didn't gravitate towards the story of John Wick 2 as much precisely because he didn't have a choice. In the first one, he had a legitimately emotional reason to go after Iosef and thus it made him a more active and engaging character to follow whereas in the second one, he felt a lot more passive by serving as pretty much only a reactive character. I also had a problem with the locations in John Wick 2 during the fight scenes exactly because they were so big and open, which made the goofs more noticeable. This was especially a problem during the museum scene, notice how the henchmen all charge at him like morons and never open fire on him until they're 5 to 10 feet away despite being in huge open rooms? In John Wick 1, he fought in a lot of small and tight corridors with a lot of cover, which made it easier for me to suspend my disbelief that the henchmen had to get that close in order to get good shot. In terms of world-building, I thought John Wick 1 handled it better, as it kept that graphic novel feel while being relatively grounded enough. In the second one, they kind of throw believability out the window by over expanding this assassins universe to the point of complete ridiculousness. The movie almost makes it seem like 1/3 of the world's population are assassins and made this universe feel a little too zany in my opinion. I think John Wick 2 having a cleaner and more colorful cinematography also loses some of the neo-noir aesthetics of the first one, but this is more of a personal nitpick as the film still looks good overall just in a different way. That being said, there are some things that John Wick 2 did better. The action is indeed bigger and more brutal as well as also being more varied as we see John fight against a bigger variety of opponents with more improvised weaponry. The hand to hand sequences are also better with Common being a standout opponent and it's a shame that he won't be returning for the third one. Overall, I liked both but John Wick 1 edges out its sequel for me as it just felt like a smoother and more satisfying experience, not to mention being a more complete story as it doesn't sequel bait like John Wick 2 even though I am looking forward to the third one.
with regards to the gun, each gun has a purpose. I think the gun he had at his back was a mini pistol not exactly for killing but cover fire. He's very principles as an assassin and one of those principles would be not not leaving someone he intends to kill with a bullet wound as it would look unprofessional 😂
I really love the sequel as well. The thing that i love the most about this franchise is the world building of it. One of my favorite scene in John Wick 1 is where he called some kind of body cleaning service then paid them with special gold coins like a currency for secret society (which it is), it was very unique and awesome! In the sequel, it enhanced this even more by introduce the High Table, Marker, no shooting on Continental (which show how disciplined, honorable they are), the secret communication center, the excomunicado and much more!
She didn't technically commit suicide, John killed her before she bled out. While I understand they are referring to the intent of her slitting her wrists it wasn't a suicide. The mechanism of death was a gunshot wound to the head inflicted by another individual, slitting her wrists only made it so she would have died if he hadn't shot her.
About the gun John pulled out after falling, that gun is a reserve, you'll see number of police, military and other expert combatants. A reserve gun are usually kept in reserve, till you're low on your main weapon ammo or when you lose your main weapon. In the scene, John runs out of ammo in his magazine, retreats behind the wall after being shot in the chest while wearing bullet proof vest. He grunts in the pain while checking for a magazine for current weapon. He's aware of the coming enemy, and decides to no move and remain hidden, as taking his opponents weapon is a safe option. 1 weapon to fight over, then 2 weapons on the table. After he failed and fell of from the second floor, he takes out his reserved weapon and shoots to prevent his opponent from shooting.
I actually liked that fight in the first film he had with that woman. It seemed like how a fight between a trained women and trained wounded man would play out. I also think the part after the bad guys capture him in the first film, featured Keanu's best acting on the series, despite the scene itself being a bit contrived. I prefer the second film to the first, but not by the same margin as you.
I honestly enjoyed 1 better than 2. The lack of strong characters in 2 bothered me, the music was lacking, the locations for some of the fight scenes were off especially the sub way with the violinist, the Sumo Japanese guy, with Common at the subway not in the train but while they were walking to the train, John Wick being hit by a car and being able to get up as if he was hit by a toy car and still on fight mode, the repetition of John pulling people down with that one combat style, the horrible dialogue between John and Common, John and the forgettable Italian guy, John and the suicide lady. Ruby Rose's character was completely useless she couldn't match her bad assery demeanour with some kind of bad ass specialty and if not why put her as the bad guy's number two? Honestly Miss Perkins from JW1 was more bad ass! With that said....THE TUNNEL SEQUENCE kicks ass all John WICK 1 had to offer in terms of action. .

Australia had the exact same problem with cinema releases of John Wick 1 + 2, JW2 came out early feb, i believe, in the US and didn't hit AUS cinemas until April 24th or something, so frustrating, especially with all these TH-cam reviews and easter egg videos ect. Also, that sucks about the film getting cut down, they shouldn't have two releases - they should just bloody release the proper film.
Did anyone else find it annoying that in JW2 a lot of the enemies were shot off screen? I felt like the camera was stuck to John's Face while he was shooting all the enemies off screen just for them to fall into the screen already dead.
I feel like that was because of poor pre-vis. The camera man obviously didn't know when to follow the action. There were at times where he was late on movement. I also didn't like the use of handheld. I feel like that tried too hard to copy Michael Mann's style. They should've just stuck to the slick camera work in the first John Wick.
John Wick: 10/10 so rewatchable the final battle in the rain gives me chills every time. John Wick 2: 6/10 is forgettable compared compared to one and two also less rewatchable. John Wick 3: 8/10 the action was top tier reminded me of deadpool, all though John Wick survived unbelievable scenarios
i personally think that besides these aforementioned, what also made john wick's action unique is since the early days STRIKING as a martial art and choreography style was the most used. then as the jason bourne saga came there was also an interest in FMA, Silat, Krav Maga, or in short some MILITARY arts used as a fighting system. Here, it focuses on GRAPPLING coupled with guns. Grappling has not really been a staple in the action movies but this movie made it look right and action packed combined with the gun fu stuff. just my opinion.

You don’t have to judge every movie, in this case just think of them as a whole together. You don’t often see people ranking the 6 movie Star Wars saga. It’s a whole story with many stories within it. Some movies do make sense to say “oh the second one was better” or “they should’ve have even made a sequel” but the nature of these movies, although different stores, they pretty much blend together as one
It’s not because the dog was like a little kid. The dog represents the parting and final gift from his wife to him. A sort of last gesture of her love for him. Killing the dog is like killing his wife.
John wick 2 for sure it's actually the first sequel that did better than chapter 1 it showed use the pencil kill the fights were better they even brought that other guy from the matrix in chapter 2 also the dog lives the first one was more emotional that s why some people thinks it's better.
I love the idea of releasing two cuts at the same time. So many films could've done this and probably made more money - Basic Instinct & Natural Born Killers come to mind (although to be honest the directors cuts of both films seem tame today, often you see more violence on say an episode of CSI or Criminal Minds).
I would definitely want to see a Vs video on the Old Man Logan comics, would be interesting to see what elements of the comic that could be used in the film. Also, I definitely need to watch John Wick after seeing this video haha.

Gonna get killed for this. The John Wick sequels are much better than the first movie. The action is so much more creative and I find the stories more compelling. Sure John Wick 1 was the most emotional but it did nothing to stand out story wise. It’s just a predictable revenge story with villains I honestly find annoying. 2 and 3 had stories that stood out because they fitted incredibly exclusively in the John Wick world. The world just didn’t feel fleshed out in 1.
I not only think that John wick 2 compliments the first won but it’s like it created this whole criminal underworld of organized crime that I personally haven’t seen a criminal world on this scale but it almost has the capacity to create a universe to it if they were to do it the right way
How do you feel about the annoying trope of the bad guy who makes a convincing threat against the protagonist (s) to stay out his/her way but to do jack about it once the heroes don't listen? I can see where it can be broken to make the story good, but it's irritating, especially when the villain is propped up to being scary.
I’m pretty sure the 29 seconds taken out of JW2 was due to UK laws, not the studio. Still one of my fave action movies and I’ve stopped watching such genre for a while as nothing really caught my attention. Nice review tho.

John Wick 1 was slightly better to be it was a bit more grounded. Part 2 was amazing but it jumped around a little to much. The club scene in part 1 is amazing.
The two movies are great, but the camera cut at the end of chapter 2 is bad, it would be better and dramatic if it ends with a close up to the face of John Wick while running away.

Gonna get killed for this. The John Wick sequels are much better than the first movie. The action is so much more creative and I find the stories more compelling. Sure John Wick 1 was the most emotional but it did nothing to stand out story wise. It’s just a predictable revenge story with villains I honestly find annoying. 2 and 3 had stories that stood out because they fitted incredibly exclusively in the John Wick world. The world just didn’t feel fleshed out in 1.
This is like comparing a Ferrari to a Lambo (imo john wick 1 has a "film festival" feel to it for some reason)

I not only think that John wick 2 compliments the first won but it’s like it created this whole criminal underworld of organized crime that I personally haven’t seen a criminal world on this scale but it almost has the capacity to create a universe to it if they were to do it the right way
I like john wick 1 more than all of them , you can almost relate to john wick and what happened to him.
How do you feel about the annoying trope of the bad guy who makes a convincing threat against the protagonist (s) to stay out his/her way but to do jack about it once the heroes don't listen? I can see where it can be broken to make the story good, but it's irritating, especially when the villain is propped up to being scary.
Oh damn the suicide scene gave me chills how she calmly did it...

Yeah I agree with you man. John Wick chapter 2 I think might be one of the best action movies ever made.
I’m pretty sure the 29 seconds taken out of JW2 was due to UK laws, not the studio.
Still one of my fave action movies and I’ve stopped watching such genre for a while as nothing really caught my attention. Nice review tho.

John Wick 1 was slightly better to be it was a bit more grounded. Part 2 was amazing but it jumped around a little to much. The club scene in part 1 is amazing.

The setup for John Wick 3 at the end of 2 was blatantly obvious.
The two movies are great, but the camera cut at the end of chapter 2 is bad, it would be better and dramatic if it ends with a close up to the face of John Wick while running away.
