Animated mulan: You can do whatever you have in mind with enough determination and if you are willing to work as hard as you can Live action mulan: Hard work and determination are useless. You must be born with special abilities or some kind of powers
Yeah that’s what I loathe about all of the new Disney films with their forced women empowerment Messages (I love women being treated as equals, being one myself) all they do is talk down to women and treat them as less. Like oh you cannot be an amazing warrior as a woman. EEEEWWWW GIRLLLSSS but if you have super powers then I suppose it’s okay, but also you have to be single faceted and bland as hell. Literally all of the live action Disney movies
Briza Schuler exactly they act as if it's more like "despite being a woman, you can succeed" even though the original animated movie had no intention of that
Glad to say I haven’t paid for a single remake since they started this live action remake thing, but holy shit it just seems like the track record gets worse every year
@@gjk-arts5855 Of course it was! It's a great film, unlike its live-action remake. To this day I'm still wondering why they didn't make a Mulan TV show as a follow-up, as they did with Aladdin, Little Mermaid, Hercules and Tarzan.
Why try to fix something that wasn't even broken to begin with? In the original, Mulan was completely ordinary, but got by with her strengths and determination. In the remake, she's an invincible Superhero for no discernible meaning! 🙄😤
@@abdulazizmerdad4093 Or at least DIFFERENT, in an original way. There are a lot of versions of Mulan in Chinese media, and some are really good (for example Hua Mulan 2009.), all taking their own understanding on the original ballad. What Disney gets wrong is that they try to redo their original work, but WOKE!, thus draining any and all personality out of their characters, and killing the heart of their stories. It's just sad. :/
One of the things I love about the cartoon version of Mulan is that she gets to defeat the villain with using both her feminity- she and her 3 friends wooing the villain's guards dressed like beautiful women and, using her fan to swipe away his sword. And she gets to kick butt using her martial arts she's learned in the army. I believe that was a fantastic way to show that you can use both things that were deemed only female and male at the time and show that they both complement each other. P. S. Mulan having her long hair down, despite it being woman powered, I'm surprised it didn't get caught on something. I did learn that at Mulan's time period, men would tie their long hair up. Maybe she could have wrapped it up.
LOL, yeah, and don't forget that she threw her armour away as well. Her armour, as in the thing that saved her life when the witch almost killed her. Idk, but if I went to battle, I sure as hell would love that piece of metal to protect my vitals....
@@destinationaddictionsamsar7894 Oh yeah, I had forgotten he was the one who fired the rocket at Shang Yu. But she said "Ready, Mushu?" I took as she and Mushu planned it earlier and that's why Mulan led Shang Yu up on the roof.
“Dishonor” was the first word that came to mind when I saw that Disney was not only doing a feminist live-action remake, but making people pay $30 to watch it. Great work, as always!
Even more, what I hate the most about the 2020 version of Mulan is that they decided to remove the most important philosophical value contained in the animated movie, that is the philosophy of late blooming flowers that will bloom more beautifully than others. That philosophy summarizes the essence of Mulan's story in disguising herself as a soldier, not to give up in despair when you do the right thing. And I hate their decision to add a sister for her instead of her grandma. When we see closely, Grandma Fa has more important role for Mulan's character growth than a sister. In the animated movie, when the palace's guards arrive to announce the announcement, her mom tell her to stay inside but her grandma asks her to watch from their fence wall, it clears to me that her grandma wants her to be strong, educated, and empowered at the level she could and as far as she knows. In the live-action, her sister does nothing but being amazed by her, and gives no contribution whatsoever in Mulan's character growth.
That and when Mulan runs away it's her Grandma that prayed to their ancestors (after saying that she doesn't think it works) for her one and only granddaughter to be watched over and it ended up working
I’m honestly sick of seeing these worthless Mary-sue’s that keep popping up. I haven’t seen the original Milan, but the way you described it Eric, the main character definitely sounds like one you can root for, while the live action version is just nearly OP. Note: One example of another great female character in media (that isn’t a Mary-sue) is Undyne from Undertale. She’s a very tough character, and has a likeable personality (that is later on, when she’s not trying to kill you).
Diamond-Lock Productions I cannot recommend Mulan 1998 enough. Mulan is my favourite Disney Princess. Her dedication to family brings me to tears every time. She took her father’s conscription papers, a promise of death and destruction, and leaves behind her flower comb, a symbol of gentleness, rebirth and peace. Mulan’s actions resonated with me so much as a child that now, at age 20, she remains as my favourite princess.
Agreed with idkwhattocallmeself - Mulan 1998 is one of the very best, funniest, most moving Disney films of all time. Must watch! It has a great character arc - and not just for Mulan, who has that inspired training sequence, and proves herself again and again, after initial struggles - but many of the other soldiers alongside her also face struggles. The stakes always feel high and motivations are clear. Plus: Mushu is hysterical I'm going to say something taboo and say I miiiiiiiiight like him slighlty more than Aladdin's Genie (!!), even though Brooklyn voiced Eddie Murphy is ever so slightly anachronistic. Still: he's HILARIOUS and I love how they animate him! Highlyg recommend.
You can watch all disney classics and see real strong women. Not in the men with vagina way but often with endurance, kindness, free will, brains....I actually go so far that I say the princes are far more potrayed as objects than the princesses.
I've written powerful characters of both sexes. But the unstoppable ones are always done for a reason, it's not their challenge. The challenge is not using it for dark purposes. It's meant to show we all at times have power over others, and we can get addicted, or worse, if abused or traumatized, it can become uncontrolled, we become or risk becoming what we fear. I'm still unpublished so can't give details, but I think it is all about presentation. One Punch Man is OP, but that's the problem. That's the running joke and bane of his existence. Framing is everything and it's easy to tell power tripping, childish stories from the real thing. Rey was an insult to any real woman as she was so inhuman but lacked any real trial or solid, earned ideals. It was all superficial imo. Wonder Woman, Captain America, Superman, Buffy, all having gifts but also being grounded and not always winning right away, it's still earned, they still suffer in human, awful ways, there's still real bravery. And frankly the problems feel earned and natural as well.
i thinks its either moana , frozen , tangled , princess and the frog , snow white , pocahantas , ect. there is a lot so set your seatbelts because where going to hell
I hope not. The girl playing Princess Ariel deserves a great film after all the racist attention she received. We can only pray they do amazing with TLM.
What about hurricane and Tarzan and lilo and stitch and bambi and Robin hood and fox and the hound I will get piss off if disney make a live action it will be horrible
In animated films such as Mulan 1998, the filmmakers have a limited amount of time and money to tell their story. That's a strong motivation to pack in as much story telling in as little time as possible. Disney and others have learned this and did it well many times. The makers of THIS film are spoiled, knowing that their budget is huge and they got all the time in the world.
She's female. She's a protagonist. It's current year. Hence, she has to be a Mary Sue. Remember Captain Marvel? Remember Rey (from Star Wars)? This is just one more of these female protagonists that is totally unrelatable to anyone because she's a total Mary Sue... The irony here is that the same kind of people who think characters like these make great role models for young girls are the people who think Barbie is problematic because she's too unrealistic. Morons!
personally id say rey is far better than mulan because at least there’s *some* growth, and even captain marvel struggles a little bit more than mulan. i agree though they have to stop making these characters so perfect and powerful because it send a bad message to young girls, since it’s basically “you’re only as good as men if you have superpowers and are perfect” instead of the mulan animated movie’s message that “you can be just as good as a man using your own strengths, skills and hard work”
They hate on Barbie who represented women in all kinds of jobs (police, astronaut, doctor...), badass comic and videogame characters who worked their way into becoming badass and still on wholesome anime characters. They just hate that they are ugly and useless and don't want to work their way up. This is why all female protagonists excpet a few nowadays get everything handed to them. becuase that is what the mayority of women want (unfortunatly).
BlackCroft666LP i mean i’d have to respectfully disagree, i’ve seen so many women complain about mulan 2020 having an unrealistic main character. personally i blame the companies behind these movies more than anything because they’re the ones who think that women want these kinds of protagonists when that’s not true, and they manage to influence a lot of people into thinking that this is what women want as well. nobody who watched the original mulan cartoon or read the ballad of mulan would ever appreciate what they did to mulan in this remake, regardless of gender.
@@BlackCroft666 So far, every "feminist" commentary I've seen are all extremely critical about the remake because of its mary sue-ness, being "better than men" b/c I have superpowers attitude, & lack of realistic character flaws (b/c oh no, we can't make our female character weak! Which ends up counterproductive b/c then the writers end up implying that women are only valued if they don't show any weakness or outperform men lol whoops) My friends and I abhorred Mulan 2020 - all of us would consider ourselves to be feminists. The bigger problem, like @Hello There says too, is that a lot of screenwriters/big companies like Disney are pandering/lazy so they can't write compelling female characters - so they just put a paint of "girl boss" and think that'll be enough to please female audiences. Which is honestly insulting lol. Linsdey Ellis has a brilliant video essay on the absurdity of "Woke Disney" that highlights companies & their desire to promote "progressive" twists & failing horribly because they lack the understanding of what they're trying to relate/cater to - so the result is shit movies that please no one &also don't even promote anything of true value.
gotta say something about my boi shan yu: "now all of china knows you're here." "good." this man had confidence like crazy, he did not care that china knew of his invasion, he was welcoming the fight, he relished in the slaughter to come because he knew he would win "how many men does it take to deliver a message?" "one." that exchange still gives me chills, it really showcased just how cold these guys were, without hesitation the bowman draws and you don't see what happens next but you don't need to. he might not be a malificent or a scar but shan yu was right up there with villains that scared baby me and are now some of my favourites in disney's line-up. not to mention he cuts a very intimidating silhouette
To be honest as I kid I didn't got that scene. Just later and I was kinda spooked. But know I miss edgy Disney and their dark vibes in their animations. No one thinks of life action when they hear the word "Disney"
@@BlackCroft666 no and i think that's what hurting disney more than anything. they have a brand as an animation studio and it was thanks to the classics that disney is the juggernaut it is today. it's just a shame they don't honor the movies that got them where they are. i would love to see disney go back to the 2d animation and crank out some truly scary villains. i haven't been spooked, startled or even mildly concerned with a baddie of theirs in a long long time. the shadow man from the princess and the frog was a good attempt, keith david was a wonderful choice, they just didn't go as sinister as i felt they could have
Sooooo trueee the second point was something I didn't get till I rewatched the movie only recently and though he didn't have a deep story behind him, he has this satisfyingly evil and dark character, without trying so hard to be one. In the live action, I couldn't help but face palm and cringe at how hard they're trying and still fail to do becoming a convincing antagonist.
It always felt to me as if Mulan - in the animated version - took her fathers place to safe him, assuming he wouldn't survive a war with his leg injury and age. She loves her father so much she rather risks her own life than risk loosing her dad. Also: even Mulan's horse Khan has more character than any character in the remake. In the remake it feels more like Mulan goes to the army as an act of defiance. Because she doesn't want to be put in her place, she is a rebell and a strong independend women. This completely ruins her character! Turning an act of love, heroism and selflessness into something out of spite, wounded pride and selfishness.
17:50 They gave Mulan a sister, because they wanted to make this movie based on the original Ballad of Mulan. In the original Ballad, Mulan has a sister. So, Disney decided to just throw in a sister, with zero personalities, of course, other than having arachnophobia (fear of spiders). Also, this film 'threw in' a line from the original Ballad of Mulan where the character of Mulan says, "I can't tell the two rabbits apart when I was riding in the field," in the opening scenes. Whereas it goes like, "But when the two rabbits run side by side, How can you tell the female from the male?" This line is so empowering at the ending of Ballad, but Disney butchered it completely, like they did the animated film with this Live-action 'REMAKE'. I am not against Live-action remakes. I liked Aladdin and Beauty & the Beast, (no offense to anyone who hates them :O), because after I finished watching them, I got a sense of fulfillment, a satisfaction, a lot of nostalgic happiness bubbling around in hearing the end title. But, I was like, "WOAH. Is the movie already done? Where was the content dude!?" after I finished watching this 'REMAKE!!!!' Nevertheless, I just subscribed to your channel. Great editing. And astounding voice-over. Good luck for 100k subs :)
In the ballad, Mulan had a younger brother (who is as much as a side character as the sister) too. But I guess Disney can only see what they want to see, I guess. The rabbit scene in the 2020 movie pissed me off. In the original, it implied that "Man and woman had difference, but when a man and a woman run together, they're just the same (they're equal)" In 2020 movie Mulan basically said that amn and woman will not be on par.
@@sannicfann3338 yah Will Smith made that movie! I always liked him anyway. It's funny because as a huge WS fan, I was skeptical about him getting that role but he a totally did pretty well.
I always go to Eric when it comes to these shitty Disney live action remakes. No matter how many times they fail, they refuse to improve. I'm not gonna lie, when Eric when in depth on what made the original Mulan so good & memorable, I almost felt like I was about to burst into tears. No, I'm serious. I was reminded on how good the original film was when I saw it as a child. And how powerful it is. These "animated characters" felt real to us. And we understood their emotions. But in this "live action" film with "real" actors, there's NOTHING to feel. Yes, the previous live action remakes are trash, especially The Lion King. But at least we know they're shitty remakes of their more successful counterparts. But here, as Eric said, if this movie wasn't called "Mulan," you would have no freaking idea what this movie was trying to be. Like they always say, "Remember The Original."
When she defeated Shan Yu with the fan, it was iconic. It held so much weight because it really symbolised her strength as a woman. It didn't show that she could DO what a man could do, but that she could ACHIEVE what a man could achieve. How dare they take that scene out!
I liked how the original made her still feminine. In the live action they made her start out athletic, but one of the things I liked about the original was how it taught you to persevere even when it’s hard. That’s why I liked how Mulan didn’t start out athletic in the original they made it so she had to work for what she wanted. And she still embraced being girly at the same time as being headstrong and clever. They just didn’t really send that message in the live action.
Why do people think a strong woman doesn’t show emotion and shuns all things feminine? Strong people deal with hardships and overcome very difficult emotions and shortcomings. A strong person cries, gets hurt, wants to give up, feels like they can’t push any farther. When they overcome those obstacles, that’s when you see their true character. You want to know who someone really is? How do they react when everything goes wrong.
It's because they still believe that only traits considered masculine can make someone strong. Men are expected to be strong by having no emotions and being physically strong. Ergo, a strong female must shun femininity and encompass the traits that are considered strong by masculine terms. It's so stupid and completely defeats the point.
let's be real here. Mulan 2009 is better. Spoiler: Everyone in mulan's brotherhood is dead except mulan and a single tear can be expected, Especially her childhood friend and his battalion who hold off an entire army just to allow her army to escape.
One of the big differences with Mulan between the 2 movies is that in the animated version she actually used her wits to overcome her obstacles. In the live action film they just made her stronger than everyone else, so it really was no surprise that she overcame every obstacle that came her way.
I haven’t seen the movie, but I need to watch this! In fact it brings awareness to the traditional Disney Classic live action disappointment. I’ll still see it when it’s free. Lol So much for being refreshingly epic. Essentially the same story but worse. Ugh.
The live action Mulan deserves a 1/10 because of how insulting it is to the original Mulan's story, morals, characters, etc. and because of the evil things this movies did off camera and on camera.
If I made this movie, I wouldn't have removed Shang ever nor Mulan's 3 friends. I wouldn't have made cricket but I wouldn't have put a new sister of Mulan nor a shape-shifting witch here. A clumsy but hardworking and brave Mulan is what I love. She makes me feel like she is human.
Mulan's Father: You are my greatest treasure. *embraces his daughter* Me: *watching with dad, we look over at each other and smile* My dad: You are my greatest treasure.
I'm crying!! I tought you will never make a vs video of this! THANK YOU SO MUCH Mulan is my favorite movie from Disney and this is by far the worst remake Disney has ever made. Every word you said was exactly what I was thinking while watching the movie. Your channel is SO underrated!! ❤❤❤
Mulan and Lion King contributed to my childhood a LOT. I was EXTREMELY hyped for their live action reboots, and I was let down when I discovered that Disney didn’t do well in making the movies. Like, why did they have to rewrite “Be Prepared” from Lion King? The original is awesome as it is!
I’m surprised that there wasn’t an increase in earthquakes after all of these remakes were released. There has to be at least 100 people rolling in their grave.
Honestly, Mulan is one of my favorite Disney movies to watch (aside from Aladdin), and I was excited when I heard that it was getting a live action remake since I grew up with Disney. (I'm turning 16 in June, and I still love Disney, since it's my main obsession) When I heard bad things about this movie (example: no songs, no Mushu, Mulan doesn't cut her hair, etc), I wasn't excited anymore, but was intrigued since it was gonna be more like the original story of Mulan. I watched it at home, and I didn't like the fact that she had the ability to use chi, because she had to struggle to become a great warrior in the animated movie without a superpower. Also, I was kinda sad that Mushu wasn't gonna be in the movie, because he's my 2nd favorite character in the movie. There are only 2 things I loved about this movie: 1: Ming-Na Wen's cameo near of the movie (She's the original voice of Mulan in the animation), and 2: During the action scenes, and the cameo scene, an instrumental version of the song Reflection was playing, which is one of my favorite songs in the movie aside from I'll make a man outta you. When I first watched the live action film, I thought it was good, but after watching it a few more times, I changed my opinion. Of course the animated Mulan is better, and will always be remembered as a classic and one of my favorite Disney movies of all time.
Shan-Yu is the perfect villain for Mulan. The antagonist is really war, and the consequences thereof, as well as how Mulan's society responds to it. So having a warlord as the face of that conflict -- terrifying, bloodthirsty, and almost inhuman because you know nothing about him as a person -- made perfect sense.
This video is just amazing!! You are soo underrated Eric! HOW ON EARTH DO YOU NOT HAVE MORE SUBS?!?!? YOU SHOULD BE ON 500K MINIMUM!!! Im NOT joking! This video was just stunning! The theme fit the topic SO WELL!!!
I like this review, except calling out some of it's problems due to being 'feminist' isn't really true. I get what you're going for - it's taking PC-obsessed fake Wokeness to the max. I HATE the new Star Wars Trilogy and didn't even bother with Captain Marvel because of how one-note and overpowered (and thus, unrelatable) those characters are. And I say all this as a feminist woman - who values good storytelling. You can have feminist stories that have actual screenwriting talent behind them - like the original Mulan. THAT is a feminist story, because she's a living, breathing human being who shows her worth through her heart, her natural problem solving ability and resourcefulness, and proves herself in a world that underestimated a woman's potential. But films like these are stupid because they're pandering to the "idea" of feminism - it's not the real thing, and thus, they don't write relatable people we care about.
While you’re free to think and believe what you will I think you really need to re-examine the word “feminist.” Its a term synonymous with mandating and “woman power must be strongest with no flaws!” That means writing off: Sara Connor Ellen Ripley A plethora of anime and slasher film protagonists Lara Croft Zelda Samus (Metroid) And even the 98 Mulan. Feminism is not about equaling the sexes but misandry and the like. And no. That is not the minority of modern feminists thats the majority. It’s akin to BLM and antifa. Disguised Marxism with a happier sounding name.
@@Jim87_36 uhhhh, that’s not what feminism is at all, or BLM for that matter, it’s more you know, telling minorities that they deserve rights the same as any male straight white dude. The people who really think that women deserve more rights then anyone else is a loud minority, I suggest you look into what the feminist movement is before making a borderline sexist comment, just saying
I knew this was coming for the Original vs the Remakes. We all know that the Original Disney movies were a thousand times better than the Disney remakes because Disney doesn’t really care about their property. Great video Eric and I agree everything you said in this video and I absolutely Hated Disney. Disney really went down hill with their property. First the Disney Channel crappy Movies, the Disney Remakes, Frozen II and now this... If anything, I would definitely avoid Disney for the rest of my life.

And in the live action poster, her "male" disguise half only has the helmet showing but the hair on that side is out when it should be up. The cartoon poster clearly show her female side and more of her male side. There's no balance in the live action which makes you wonder why even bother putting the helmet on if you're going to barely show the other duality.
Mulan is my favorite classic Disney movie, but even though I should've been looking forward to seeing what they do with the remake, the criticisms that their other live-action remakes get just made me concerned, so I had low expectations. And it STILL disappointed me. It's so different from the original animated movie that it honestly felt to me like it was a movie from a different studio that was trying to imitate the original, but didn't catch what made it so special. Most of the side characters were excluded, the villains were different, the title character was the feminist version of empowered (as I feared would happen), and the emotional moments of the film were poorly recreated. I remember the 1998 film from my childhood and I always will, but the remake was so frickin' boring. Also, the original film was based off of the Hua Mulan legend, but, apparently, the remake was supposed to be EVEN MORE based off of that legend. Maybe that's why it feels so different from the animated film, but I could be wrong. Anyways, this was a great video, and I loved it. Keep up the good work. :)
Brilliant commentary. I roll my eyes at all the crap they did with this new version and I'm glad that it's bombing. I think even without covid as an excuse (and you know they're going to do that) it would still bomb and rightfully so. And what the director said at the end. Oh GOD, I think I pulled a muscle rolling my eyes.
Thanks buddy. Yeah, she says a lot of things in interviews that don't make sense. She even talks about Mulan "NOT" being a superhero even though she clearly IS in this version due to the abilities that her Chi gives her.
To be fair, most of these failures of modern "feminist icon" movies are people trying desperately to pander to what they *think* feminists and other SJW types want to see in a character/story, not what any of us actually wanted...
25:00 thank you for saying this! I can’t understand how the same company that made the originals can make such terrible and soulless remakes. I can still watch the original Mulan and feel inspired and entertained, this remake barely kept me awake
That's the impact that pretty much ALL the recent live action Disney remakes have had on me. I've done versus videos on all of them and when i analyse the two, I always come out appreciating the original even MORE than I already did. Thanks so much for watching Rhys!
I think I know something that could’ve improved this remake. When Mulan went to war, her sister should have followed her. If they’re going to make her perfect with fighting, make her develop more of an emotional side by having her sister have to struggle, trying to defend and encourage her. If they give her a sister in this version, they should at least do something with her
Dont forget, Mulan (2020) was filmed near concentration camps in holding Uyghur Muslims. *edit: Disney even praised those managing the camps in the movie
They sure did. I made a quick mention of it in the video. That's why the production of this movie is DISGUSTING. And yet Disney are trying to make a Muslim character with Ms Marvel in an attempt to represent the Muslim demographic (which I don't trust them to do by the way) whilst they simultaneously praise the very people who are torturing them and throwing them into concentration camps. Disney are sick. And I hope people see them for the scum bag and hypocritical company they really are. They don't get to preach diversity and politics after praising and supporting China and their horrible deeds.
Lol. I'm glad you liked the music in this video buddy. I put a lot of work into timing it and picking which music to put in the video. So I'm glad you enjoyed it. The links to the music used in this video are in the description.
90s Disney movies were honestly pure cinematographic masterpieces. I rewatch the original Beauty and the Beast the other day as an adult, and I was touched, amazed, and entertained. Only the first 15 minutes of the movie alone forced me to pause and take in how amazing the movie was. Characters are established, the plot is set, the themes are introduced, and all that is left is to watch the craftmanship and brilliance of the creators tell us a wonderful and magical story. Who can love a Beast? Then, I thought of the remake and wanted to puke. Botched, so so botched. It's like nobody understood what the story is about... like nobody understood why the story existed (initially written in the 1500s, and than retold and written). It's a story of virtue, but most importantly a story of love. Filled with symbolism, and with complex and mature themes about marriage, and the love between a man and a woman.... Imagined the thousands of young French girls, (and boys!) forced to marry for political reasons during the enlightment age. Forced to learn to love each other, despite men being beast. Which woman have the virtues to love the men within the beast??? It gives me goosebumbs. Nothing to do with the villagers telling Emma Watson "one woman reading isn't enough?", or the whole plotline with her mother? WTF Disney? Why are you even writting this crap?
Thank you for making this comparison. It's genuinely sad how out of touch Disney is with their beloved movies. It's as if they intentionally took everything that made the original so amazing and threw it all away in order to appeal to... Feminists..? I guess? Sheesh.
Honestly Beauty and the Beast and Aladdin were pretty good The Lion King on the other hand really needed some upgrade but Mulan really was disappointing nothing anyone says will change my mind
@@politicscommentatorAladdin movie was great because they even mesmerized me more. All over it was equal to Animated film even far better why? Jasmine has her own song, she has friend Dahlia, Génie got himself a Family, The useless parrot turns into monster and more. And they don't lessen any films.
OG Mulan's hero journey: She uses her wits and the skills she has to accomplish the tasks that she otherwise couldn't do to keep up with and in some cases surpass the men and ultimately save the day. Remake Mulan's hero journey: She decides to stop not being awesome like she was all along.
The only good thing the live action did was make me appreciate the good parts in the animated movie even more. And that doesn’t even come close to forgiving it.
When I saw you uploaded a new video, I had a huge feeling it was gonna be intriguing and of course I WAS RIGHT! Very well done on this video Eric and it saddens me as well that Disney just keep doing these shameless cash grabs and don’t put a new spin on it 😠 Love your videos Mate BEEN SUBSCRIBED SINCE LAST YEAR 👍 👍 👍
Hey Eric, if you want to give yourself a break, you should compare some of the better live-action remakes, like The Jungle Book, Cinderella, and Pete’s Dragon, to the originals.
The only complaint i have is that the music didn’t fit the scenes you put it in and it was a bit too loud. I was concentrating on that instead of your commentary. But other than that it was perfect. Subscribed. :)
I wouldn't call this a feminist movie, I say this as a feminist myself. It's more like what a rich hollywood male ceo *thinks* what a feminist film is like without actually talking with any feminist writers or... just women in general. The OG movie is much more of a feminist film cause MULAN HAS ACTUAL CHARACTER!!!
Your welcome Kat. ALL of the animated Disney movies were made with inspired and passionate intentions. The live action remakes are ONLY made for money. And that will NEVER exceed the creativity that comes from passion. Thanks so much for watching! I hope you enjoyed the video!
My mum actually wanted us to watch he mulan remake, but I told her it was definitely gonna be disappointing and my dad looked it up and said it was actually bad, so we didn’t end up watching it (thankfully)
Never saw any of the remakes after Jungle book and Beauty and the beast, sorta watched the Lion King but never finished it because I had enough of the remakes
It's always funny when that kind of thing happens. Especially if THAT'S the add you saw for THIS video. 😎 The add is completely wasted. It tries to sell you on the movie and then you see a video that tells you not to buy what it's selling. 😂

Mushu (the salamander) was actually the one who defeated the villain in the animated film. But go off I guess
@@destinationaddictionsamsar7894 Oh yeah, I had forgotten he was the one who fired the rocket at Shang Yu. But she said "Ready, Mushu?" I took as she and Mushu planned it earlier and that's why Mulan led Shang Yu up on the roof.
Mushu is a dragon.
So basically, Mulan from the 90s has more Personality
Mulan's horse has more personality than all of these movies characters.
The panda from the lake scene had more personality
Even the animated sequel Mulan 2 has a better personality than this piece of garbage...of course, that's not saying very much come to think of it...

True I love that scene when Mulan father explains why he loves the flower tree
You should definitely watch the original Mulan

If only Disney understood that, then we wouldn't get the horrendous female characters that we do.
Well said! Limitations often bring out the creative sides of people.

This is just one more of these female protagonists that is totally unrelatable to anyone because she's a total Mary Sue...
The irony here is that the same kind of people who think characters like these make great role models for young girls are the people who think Barbie is problematic because she's too unrealistic.
Morons!
personally id say rey is far better than mulan because at least there’s *some* growth, and even captain marvel struggles a little bit more than mulan. i agree though they have to stop making these characters so perfect and powerful because it send a bad message to young girls, since it’s basically “you’re only as good as men if you have superpowers and are perfect” instead of the mulan animated movie’s message that “you can be just as good as a man using your own strengths, skills and hard work”
The 2009 version of Mulan is by far the best one. You can watch it here:

Which ends up counterproductive b/c then the writers end up implying that women are only valued if they don't show any weakness or outperform men lol whoops)
My friends and I abhorred Mulan 2020 - all of us would consider ourselves to be feminists.

Lol
Absolutely
17:50 They gave Mulan a sister, because they wanted to make this movie based on the original Ballad of Mulan. In the original Ballad, Mulan has a sister. So, Disney decided to just throw in a sister, with zero personalities, of course, other than having arachnophobia (fear of spiders).
Also, this film 'threw in' a line from the original Ballad of Mulan where the character of Mulan says, "I can't tell the two rabbits apart when I was riding in the field," in the opening scenes.
Whereas it goes like, "But when the two rabbits run side by side,
How can you tell the female from the male?"
This line is so empowering at the ending of Ballad, but Disney butchered it completely, like they did the animated film with this Live-action 'REMAKE'.
Where was the content dude!?" after I finished watching this 'REMAKE!!!!'

Aladdin was great and Beauty and the Beast could've been just as great if Disney didn't poop on the music.
In the ballad, Mulan had a younger brother (who is as much as a side character as the sister) too. But I guess Disney can only see what they want to see, I guess.
The rabbit scene in the 2020 movie pissed me off. In the original, it implied that "Man and woman had difference, but when a man and a woman run together, they're just the same (they're equal)"
In 2020 movie Mulan basically said that amn and woman will not be on par.

Wow, that was a whole essay...

Spoiler:
Everyone in mulan's brotherhood is dead except mulan and a single tear can be expected, Especially her childhood friend and his battalion who hold off an entire army just to allow her army to escape.

If these remakes are meant to have us appreciate the originals, gotta say Disney is doing a great job.

While you’re free to think and believe what you will I think you really need to re-examine the word “feminist.” Its a term synonymous with mandating and “woman power must be strongest with no flaws!”
That means writing off:
Sara Connor
Ellen Ripley
A plethora of anime and slasher film protagonists
Lara Croft
Zelda
Samus (Metroid)
And even the 98 Mulan.

Hey Eric, sorry for interrupting but I strongly think your channel is awesome, and I'd like to say keep up with the good work and great job!

In the posters, the original one, Mulan is smiling, and in the live action one she isnt
thats how everyone felt while watching both as well
And in the live action poster, her "male" disguise half only has the helmet showing but the hair on that side is out when it should be up.
The DISHONOR at the end was gold... 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣👍👍👍👍👍👍
This video is beautiful. I completely agree.
Thanks Michael. No one has used that word to describe this video. :)
I'm glad you enjoyed it.
Eric Carter Absolutely! This was an extremely thoughtful review. Keep up the amazing work man.😁
Brilliant commentary.
Fun fact: Disney filmed next to a concentration camp. An active concentration camp
I know. I made mention of it in the video. It's DISGUSTING.
25:00 thank you for saying this!
I can’t understand how the same company that made the originals can make such terrible and soulless remakes. I can still watch the original Mulan and feel inspired and entertained, this remake barely kept me awake
Mulan 2020 makes me wanna watch classic 1998 Mulan again. Makes me appreciate it more even now.
That's the impact that pretty much ALL the recent live action Disney remakes have had on me. I've done versus videos on all of them and when i analyse the two, I always come out appreciating the original even MORE than I already did.
Thanks so much for watching Rhys!
Mushu: “Alright! That’s it! Dishonor your whole family!!”
Mushu: "How could you miss it was 3 feet in fronta you!"
I think I know something that could’ve improved this remake. When Mulan went to war, her sister should have followed her. If they’re going to make her perfect with fighting, make her develop more of an emotional side by having her sister have to struggle, trying to defend and encourage her. If they give her a sister in this version, they should at least do something with her
You know what, I actually agree with you with you with everything thing you say with this 2020 review
No make a man out of you song, instead F

@@phoenixhunteryt7554 nice one!

@@EricCarter12 Disney was better in the 90s. Oh I miss it. They must've fired all the good ppl
@@EricCarter12 that is disgusting
holy crap the background music just slaps! I hope the disney employees appreciates this and puts it in it's next movie
wait...
Lol. I'm glad you liked the music in this video buddy. I put a lot of work into timing it and picking which music to put in the video.
So I'm glad you enjoyed it. The links to the music used in this video are in the description.
The Chi is way different to the force!
The Chi is not a super power!😂
Exactly right!
I guess? Sheesh.
I WAS SO EXCITED FOR A REAL CHANG!!
Imagine how a good a human version of "I'll make a man out of you" would have been!
Honestly Beauty and the Beast and Aladdin were pretty good The Lion King on the other hand really needed some upgrade but Mulan really was disappointing nothing anyone says will change my mind
I agree for Beauty and the Beast. Aladdin for me was just okay.
Tim Tran yeah I respect your opinion but I liked Aladdin more
If you ask me, this live action remakes shouldn’t even exist in the first place. Is all the creativity in the world lost?
I love the remakes of Alice, Beauty and the beast, and aladdin
Very well done on this video Eric and it saddens me as well that Disney just keep doing these shameless cash grabs and don’t put a new spin on it 😠 Love your videos Mate BEEN SUBSCRIBED SINCE LAST YEAR 👍 👍 👍
Thanks buddy. Your comment put a smile on my face. :)
Hey Eric, if you want to give yourself a break, you should compare some of the better live-action remakes, like The Jungle Book, Cinderella, and Pete’s Dragon, to the originals.
Yah Cinderella was nearly perfect!
Or maleficent
Finally! Also, I like the music you chose.
I need to watch mulan again. It's one of my favorite Disney animated movies.
The only complaint i have is that the music didn’t fit the scenes you put it in and it was a bit too loud. I was concentrating on that instead of your commentary. But other than that it was perfect. Subscribed. :)
Thanks for the feedback and thanks for subscribing. :) Welcome to the channel!
Thank you for the review! This soulless live-action made me realize how much I love animated version and how 1998 Mulan will always inspire me
Your welcome Kat.
That was close. 👍
Yeah
Never saw any of the remakes after Jungle book and Beauty and the beast, sorta watched the Lion King but never finished it because I had enough of the remakes
Lucky you
I got an ad for Mulan 2020 whilst I was watching this....
It's always funny when that kind of thing happens. Especially if THAT'S the add you saw for THIS video. 😎
The add is completely wasted. It tries to sell you on the movie and then you see a video that tells you not to buy what it's selling. 😂

Mulan (2020) vs Mulan (1998) is the peak example of Mary Sue vs Non-Mary Sue.
