Cedar Point Announces Top Thrill 2 for 2024! | Media Day Interviews with Zamperla and Tony Clark!

- Kerney-cation was invitied by Cedar Point to attend the media day announcement for Top Thrill 2! This attraction is being re-themed by Zamperla to create the first triple LSM launched Strata coaster!
We were able to catch up with Adam Sandy from Zamperla and Tony Clark from Cedar Point and check out some of the awesome merchandise available now for Top Thrill 2.
We also had the opportunity go behind the wall to check on the construction progress and witness the first support for the spike to be placed. Thanks for watching and I hope you enjoy this real family vacation!

For those of you who are unfamiliar, a block zone is a section of ride that only one train may occupy. At the end of a block zone is a method to stop the train in case the block zone ahead is still occupied.
This is the safety system that prevents roller coaster trains from colliding with one another. In case you were unaware ❤

But this is a swing launch, the only way to get a train this big over that top hat.
But no twist, no real relation. It's closer to the new swing launch rides like Pantheon.

Lol I think your so right! I think he was thinking I was going to bash the name right off the bat! My first impression of the name when I first heard that morning was not impressed, but I really wanted to ask Tony how they arrived on it. After hearing the explanation, I am really happy with the name. I don’t think I would have to explain what top thrill 2 is to anyone, compared to explaining something like Polaris.
Great interview, very refreshing. You did not attempt to 'show-boat' by interrogating the park or Zamperla on the things you may not agree with. Your appreciation for being invited and granted an interview showed. Stay respectful, -it will take you far in life.

Yes I didn’t realize how blessed I was until I re discovered Cedar Point in 2021. I always went to geauga lake as a kid and only visited cedar point a few times in my young adult hood and never really appreciated it as I do now!

Great interviews! It seemed like you had prepared questions for both. You made me think of questions to ask them. For Zamperla, "what was the main reason for the 74mph first launch speed?" and my burning question for Cedar Point is "Why was it not worth the investment on this project to extend the layout past the top hat?"
It was the previous launch tech that lead to the accident. They wanted to add something new that could fit in the park.

Yes I definitely spent a few hours milling over the questions and also made some last minute changes after the official announcement that morning! I am glad to hear that translated will in the video!
My un-professional guess for the 74 MPH first launch is a limitation on an LSM launch system. With the amount of track that’s available, an LSM is only able to get you up to 74 MPH. Comparatively, the previous Intamin Hydraulic launch is able to get you up to 120 MPH.
I think Zamperla needed the spike in order to use LSMs as a lunch method, since it would require multiple launches or a swing launch to get the acceleration up to 120 MPH to get over the top hat.
Adding to my response above, I think they would have to increase the spike and launch distance if they used LSMs to get over a taller Top Hat. It’s a safer and more cost effective option in my opinion to avoid adding height to the top hat in something that has worked for 20 years. Too much risk to add re engineering at that height in my opinion.
With this attraction, they get a strata coaster back, that also is a record breaker. It’s a win win for Zamperla and cedar point.
I honestly think we have hit a ceiling for tallest and fastest coasters. One of the best coasters in the nation, velocicoaster, is none of those things. I think making a great coaster experience is the next frontier.
Can’t wait to come back next year.

That’s awesome and really great to hear! Yes a lot has changed! Breakers will be awesome for 7 days! We stayed their on opening weekend this year and had a blast, even though it was a little cold. Breaker mid summer is the best, since you can enjoy the Waterpark, pools at the hotel, and Cedar Point all from one central location!

Couldn’t agree more! You can never please anyone! I am so happy they are theming the area to CP racing and once again making roller coaster history even though it’s not the biggest or the fastest. I think 120 MPH is plenty fast!
I was really questioning the simplicity of the name until I talked to Tony in this video. Honestly, the name is perfect , it tells you everything you need to know. I think a brand new name might confuse some of the guests who aren’t enthusiasts.

I think they probably wanted to move away from dragster, but keep a reference to the previous attraction. I think stop Thrill 2 does a great job of encompassing the previous record breaking coaster, but the 2 nods to something new!

I completely agree! I think giving guests a free personal Locker while they ride encourages them to stow their loose articles, when charging for optional lockers discourages them.

I sure hope it does have metal detectors and a zero loose article policy. I’m so tired of loose articles flying out of peoples’ pockets and striking other people in the head or face. That’s what worries me whenever I ride towards the middle or back row on roller coasters now.

The new name of Top Thrill 2, make a lot of sense from Tony Clark's explanation. It's what Six Flags did to pay homage for the Coasters at their Parks by keeping part of the original names, after being converted into Hybrid Rollercoasters. Even Twisted Colossucks. I call it that because I have to be the worst RMC Rollercoaster, and, the Colossus name shouldn't be in it. I wish Cedar Point had renamed Mean Streak, Mean Vengeance. Although it's a Great Coaster, the current name is Very Lame. I'm so looking forward to riding Top Thrill 2!!🏁🚩

I did some quick googling and I think they renamed Dragster H2O back in 2017 when they redid the Waterpark, but good catch! That would have been weird if they kept the name for the slide and they closed dragster!
That’s pretty worrying if they’ve only been focussing on their side of it, rather than considering what is already there. Hopefully the new works well with the old otherwise it’s gonna be a disaster.

That's just public relations to not look bad by commentating what the other company has done. He answered it perfectly by only focusing on what their company can do. Obviously logistically, they know that ride inside and out to make all the necessary changes

Yeah I can see why you feel that way, getting a single launch to 120 mph definitely throws more Gs than 3 separate launches to get you there.
I am excited for the added ride length, new spike, and technology the retheme is going to bring though too! Hoping this adds to reliability and safety!
I wish they would have added a couple of twists to the new spike as an ode to Wicked Twister. I also think they should have added an inline barrel roll on the finish line track. That's an awful lot of wasted straight track. I feel like they wasted a good opportunity to really improve the ride.

I completely agree, I was definitely thinking they might add some King da aka type hills after the top hat, but I think the space limited in the park might have restricted that. I also thought they might add like a wicked twister twist at the top, which I think would have been less intense then a straight spike.
Honestly, since I am afraid of heights, I think a straight spike is more terrifying! I think Cedar a point and Zamperla likely moved away from a twist since Tony emphasized the view from the top of the spike. It’s going to be a view unlike any other attraction of that area and the park!

Thanks for watching and the comment! I completely agree, that’s why I think Cedar Fair should explore a virtual queue. I don’t know why people want to wait 4 hours for a ride, as I would rather be in the park doing other things, spending money, and experiencing what the park has to offer.
I probably won’t be able to ride it until it makes it’s way to early entry or fast lane in that case. I have my kids with me and I can’t ditch them for 5 hours in the park lol, but usually 30-60 minutes is so able.

Good point! With the situation of T2 and T3 at Kentucky kingdom, which also had an incident, is vaguely similar to TTD and TT2. I think most of the improvements to TT2 really “aim” to benefit the ride! We will have to wait and see if safety and reliability of this attraction are better than the last!
Guess they won't be targeting opening day 2024.
My guess is that they are targeting 2024, but the winter and off-season is unpredictable, so they can’t commit to opening day.
My guess is that it will be something similar to kings islands latest new area and carrowinds. The “Land” will be open on opening day, but the attraction won’t be ready until like June 1st ish. But who knows! I’ll be there on opening day for sure to find out!

But that name, lmao. That's the laziest rename I've seen since X2, but X2 didn't even add new track. This literally has a new track and new layout. TT2. So dumb.

I have definitely heard similar feedback on the name. I honestly think Cedar Point was going for simplicity. If you mention the new name “Top Thrill 2” to anyone that has heard of TTD, or been to cedar point, they can figure it out.
Comparatively, if you ask someone who isn’t up to date on the latest news if they want to ride Polaris in 2024, they likely have no clue what your talking about and would require an explanation. I see the benefit to going either way and that’s why I love this community!
Metel detectors ??? What ??? Canadas wonderland owned by cedar fair doesn’t have those in ride lines only the frount park
To make sure people are bringing phones /keys/ stuff that can fly out and injure a bystander I guess?
Exactly. Steel Vengeance has them in line to make sure you have nothing in your pockets. It’s not about weapons. Based on Tony’s response, they will work with the manufacturer Zamperla to see if metal detectors are going to be required. It is nice that you get a complimentary but small locker for steel vengeance since you can’t really take anything on it.

With the reimagine? I think they want to keep Cedar Point as the roller coaster capital of the world by trying something new and bringing back a strata coaster to the park.

Yes, honestly, I think the difference in height is not substantial enough to make a difference between king da ka and the original top thrill. I think six flags just waived a big check at Intamin asking to be a little bigger and faster than TTD, which is bad business practice in my opinion.
I think Intamin should have offered the same ride height and speed to six flags or created something entirely new.

It's wonderful how nice you were but I still think this ride is going to be lame compared to the original. So many different options they had and Cedar Point went with this. Incredible let down. Cedar Point, we all know you can do better. This is the type of thing Six Flags would do.

Rest of the ride was meh but the launch was so incredible that it instantly became my #1 coaster of all time even though when I went to ride it a second time a cloud rolled in and it went down. *Jokingly* Give me a solid 0-120mph launch or give me death. 😄

Thanks for watching and I appreciate the comment! I think your concerns as valid! One big acceleration to 120 mph is definitely different than 3 LSM launches to get you up to 120 MPH.
Conversely, I think the spike definitely adds a new component of thrill to the coaster and increases the overall ride time to the attraction, which is a plus.
I know they are capitalizing on the rollback being a favorite, but I’m not sure how far the first launch is going to get you up the top hat. From the rendering it looks like maybe 1/2? An original rollback was almost all the way at the top, so that’s something to consider too. We will just have to wait till 2024 to find out!!!
Budget name? ffs...... The name kinda implies it's a video game, or tries to capture video game like characteristics. Meh, no effort.
The one thing I do like is the color scheme and logos.

Thanks for watching and the comment! I definitely agree it’s straight forward and a simple name! I like how it tells you exactly what the ride is, compared to a new name, like Polaris. I feel like you would have to explain it compared with Top Thrill 2.

Thanks for watching and your comment! Yeah I am definitely concerned on the wait times! I don’t want to spend a whole park dark waiting for a new attraction. We went to Magic Kingdom and used the virtual line and it’s much better. You wait for you mr group to be called and the max wait is an hour. we could still enjoy the park and “spend money” instead of being stuck in a queue. Really hoping a virtual queue is added to cedar points tech road map in the future!
It looks like a great coaster but KindaKa is even better now than this new coaster.but steel I steel want to ride it
