      Is it possible to "back feed" power into the controller? For example injecting power into the far end of the strip, or the middle of a strip?

    Ironically I make my own RGBW controller but using the ESP32-S3 or C6. Note the 3A limit for current requires that, for most applications, the LED's should be powered from a separate 5V/12V supply sharing a common ground. A 10mA limit (for a 300 light chain) may be sufficient for testing / development but for deployment I find this limit unsatisfactory. My latest project, for Christmas trees, involves deploying the lights randomly across the tree then using a connected camera to map the light positions (on the tree) into memory - in this way I can generate a coordinated light display animation regardless of LED positioning. I also repurposed an LED TV screen (gutted the hardware and light panel) and substituted LED strings (with multiple controllers of course). Used for Halloween and Christmas primarily but also to amuse the kids (who at age 8 and 10 are better programmers than I am!)

    I’m new to setting up LED’s. Just did Chris’ Closet Light Setup for my son. Amazing ! I’m wanting to put LED’s on his 6 Floating Shelves in his room and also around the small wall the shelves are on. Do I just connect everything parallel ? Are there separate channels on this controller ? Would I be able to have the LED’s going around wall separate from the LED’s that are on each shelf ? Lastly, I guess since the LED’s on the shelf are only 24”, whatever animation is being run, it’ll just travel the 24” on each shelf and repeat ? Thanks. Trying to learn. The closet was a huge success. Thanks Chris.

  • @ViciousXUSMC
    @ViciousXUSMC หลายเดือนก่อน

    I'll have to grab one of these, but in most cases with my projects I am working with raw power from the wall or a transformer not plugging it into a power brick with PD.
    Now for portable projects running on battery banks, yep this is perfect.
    It says it supports direct power from a power source, but I just dont see a quick and easy way to do it with a harness or terminal. So if I am soldering, I may as well just do what I have been doing and build my own. Or for the same cost the QuinLED Dig Uno does have the connections for power without soldering.

The product page doesn’t say the number of addressable zones but that every 71.42mm is addressable. If I divide by that it gives me 14 zones so would I use 14 as the number of LED or 784/4 =196

What is the most I can set for the maximum current mA with this controller and the power source I am using?

    • @MagWLED
      @MagWLED 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Most 65W USB-C PD adapters should support 3A @ 12V, so 3000 mA (if it's a good quality adapter). The current calculation in WLED is just an estimate, though, and the actual current draw depends on the LED strip. If you want to find the absolute max, set the strip to all white at max brightness and keep bumping up the current limiter until you start seeing the brightness drop again - this will happen when the adapter has reached its maximum current and the voltage starts dropping instead. Some adapters support beyond 3A, but the fuse will trip if you go much beyond that.

    I have a few questions:
    What is the benefit to using 12V LEDs? Just lower current at the same power level?
    Did your Power Bank run USB-C Power Delivery as well? Or does the controller have a buck-boost to power the 12V strips?

    • @MagWLED
      @MagWLED 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Outside the context of USB-C, the biggest benefit is less voltage drop and thus longer runs without power injection (you can get power supplies that can provide lots of amps at 5V). USC-C power adapters are current limited to 3-5A, so by going 12V you also get the advantages of longer runs _and_ significantly more power.

    The problem with Amazon affiliate links is that they don't lead to products directly, they lead to a search term which may OR MAY NOT result in the correct product. In my case, the link does not result in the featured product. And, of course the affiliate system redirects you to your own country's Amazon site (which is probably what you want).

    i got a few a while ago when amazon wasn`t an option, it can power most of my little projects as a ledcube and a matrix display with 1024 led`s. im not a favorite of this wago connector one with a clip would be stronger (how would this work in a casing), also while it got the esp32 c3 wich doesn`t need a serial bridge and has a smaller footprint there wasn`t any room for a digital mic while other controllers like the athom the gledopto and the dig2go do have, i miss this option.
    i see on amazon there is a new version of this board now with two big capacitors instead of one are there more differences and do we get the new version if we order as of this moment ?

      I'm glad the boards are working well for you! Not sure I understand the issue with the WAGO - it has an _extremely_ robust connection when the wires are inserted correctly.
      There was an earlier version with two output caps, but it has never been sold (although there might be some images of it floating around. After doing the math and lots of testing, one cap was removed to give the antenna more space.

    Hi Chris. I have an WLED controller from ali (gledopto) and one i made from an ESP32. from both i have a problem where WLED resets or turns off. So i can have on a rainbow color effect and have it running for a day without problems'. but randomly it can be after 1h or a day or 10min it resets and goes for the preset white i had set at startup or it turns off. i am running 10m WS2811 12v. I have a sacrificial first led where the gledopto box is placed with a long but thin wire to the led strip. i am using an 500w 12v power supply for this project. The strip is splitt in 2. So the power supply is powering 2, 5m strips. Have you had this happen to you?

  • @olemissjim
    @olemissjim 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

    How about these with a 24v or 48v strip? I keep killing WLED ESP32 boards, I think the power back feeds. I need something with complete safety isolation. Maybe QUIN led?

    • @MagWLED
      @MagWLED 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Although you can power MagWLED-1 via an external power supply just fine, it's designed for USB-C up to 12V. There is no barrel connector and you'd need external, fusing and it does not tolerate voltages above 12V. The QuinLED boards are excellent choices if you want external power and higher voltages.

    • @MagWLED
      @MagWLED 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      12V is max, if you want it powered via the USB-C port (you could alternatively power the strips from an external power supply with a common ground, of course, but then I'd probably recommend one of the QuinLEDs). It's possible to design a controller that e.g does 20V USB-C PD and then boosts it to 24V, but at that point you'll need an expensive power supply anyway, so it might be better to just go with a regular, non USB-C, option.
