  • Part 3 of our parkour documentary. Made by practitioners, we have tried our best to ensure that this short film gives the most accurate information possible about parkour and the methods and ideas behind it.
    It is a deliberate departure from the typical 'media parkour' you might see on TV and aims to provide reliable information to both newcomers and experienced practitioners alike.

    I've been a member of Northern Parkour for a while now, and although I don't really post a lot, I do read a lot. I practice a lot, mostly with my friends who are also very dedicated, however I have as of recently felt that we have strayed from the true meaning of parkour. This video has really helped set me back on track, and most important of all view the world the way a traceur should, and invite challenge back into my mind. I truly thank you.

    Whoever wrote the narrative (of the entire short) is a genius and I am so appreciative of the philosophy expressed. If I had one person in the world to meet it would be that person, the narrative is actually that impactful. Thank you.

    People started training parkour in Manchester in 2004. At the start of 2005, it really took off after the channel 4 documentary, Jump Britain. We never really did much to manage it. People just heard about the training and turned up. We have a regular influx of new people, which is great :)

    Start a group. It may be just you at first, but people will join you if you stick with it. We didn't know what we were doing when we first started training, but gradually, we picked it up and over time we had the opportunity to train with more experienced people. If you want to train, train!

    I'm Dave, and I started at 21. Paul started at 25. The best exercise is trying to move past obstacles. Start with easy obstacles (like flat ground) and then find gradually harder obstacles. Parkour is a training system itself, you don't need to train for it. Just start at the start and take small steps forwards.

  • @Obsidian1138
    @Obsidian1138  15 ปีที่แล้ว

    Thanks Tim. I knew this would tie in with your outlook on parkour :) Let me know when you're next training at the flats and I'll make a point of heading over in that direction for some more of that brutal conditioning!!

    one of my group's members:
    "A fundamental misunderstanding about parkour is that it is dangerous. When a muggle watches parkour he thinks "if I tried that I would permenantly damage my body." By contrast, a traceur says with confidence "I can" or "I can not yet do that" because, I believe a traceur is someone who is in the ongoing process of feeling out exactally what he can and can not do. Life is much safer when one has this knowledge.
    Not doing parkour is dangerous." ~David Cherney

    Hello! Thanks for posting this up. It's realy nice to hear the philosophy behind what you do. I agree with a lot of what you're saying about society's conditioning. I have a few objections however which I'd like to raise with you;
    Firstly there is a great deal of your thinking which is to do with personal acheivement, improvement and the focusing on one's self to the point of disregarding external influence.

    @deaducr any age is good to start, remember the key to success is practice and dedication, if you really want to be good at something you will have a goal set and go for it regardless of what everyone else says, just remember to be safe and dont try to do anything you know your not ready for

    @STORMWHITEpro the best part of parkour is finding your own. If I or anyone else was to tell you what to do or how to do it, you'd lose half of the enjoyment that comes from doing parkour. What you need to do is to go out, look for obstacles and do what you think "might" be possible. Those are the exercises you'll gain the most from. As for shoes, volley ball shoes work very well, but athletic shoes in general work.

    If anything, best muscles to train mainly is core, and Shoulders..
    But every muscle in your body has to be used,
    This is essentially Urban Rock Climbing, and if you do rock climbing, you will realise that you need a different muscle for each job.
    Shoulders for pulling yourself over obstacles,
    Legs for getting up to them,
    Core to keep your body in shape,
    And fitness is needed, but it is gained while doing Parkour-
    Just run around town, doing jumps, and remember the basics,
    How to land.

    First off what you guys are doing are brilliant and truly inspirational in the fact it has open my eyes to view life differently... I'm just curious to know two things: first at what age did you start training for pakour (I know age doesn't matter, but I am just curious); and I know you probably get asked this a lot but what is a general workout I should do to do pakour??

    @Obsidian1138 I agree with you, but the shoes aspect comes in not slipping over different materials.. for example if you Kong in a high speed, to a precision landing on something small [like a high block or something], is it the shoe or the landing technique that prevents you from slipping? [regardless wet objects] for example i have shoes that stick like glue to concrete, but feels like on ice on painted floor... any suggestions?

    @HigleyFootballRulz The general rule of exercise is to practise the things you want to get better at. If you want your abilities to become more balanced, simply use a wider range of exercise. If you want to become better at something specific (like moving through your environment) then practise precisely that.

    I'm thinking about starting with parkour, but before that I have a lot of conditioning to do. I can't even do a normal push up, I am overweighted and I have weak arms. Is there any kind of conditioning that would help me build my arm strength (so that I can do regular exercises) without having to go to a gym or having to buy special equipment since my parents won't let me?

    @supernova464252 It does help to have people to practise Parkour with in person, because then you can share ideas and challenge each other more easily. However, if you don't have anyone then you can still get ideas and info from the internet. It takes a little bit longer to achieve things, perhaps, but learning on your own often means you come to understand it better.
    I've done most of my training on my own.

    @bobbypoo247 I think we made it clear in the documentary that Parkour is about personal improvement rather than personal achievement. Sure, Parkour is a personal discipline, but you need to have a strong foundation yourself if you want to help others. Modern society certainly isn't 'intrinsically evil', but it does have a tendency to encourage you to forget that we can exist and operate independently. That, in my experience, is a significant flaw.

  • @Obsidian1138
    @Obsidian1138  13 ปีที่แล้ว

    @theveritas100 We wouldn't land on the balls of our feet if it wasn't the best way to land. You definitely don't want to land flat footed or on your heels, as this will definitely lead to injury. For most jumps, landing on the balls of your feet is best. I've never heard of anyone breaking their toes by landing this way.

When your alone , you mostly have more concentration. So use that :) Also you could ask your friends if they want to try it , but they will most likely , like my friends , tell you that your a monkey and laugh at you :(. So just keep training no matter if alone or not. :)
