Parkour - The Nature Of Challenge (4/4)

  • Part 4 of our parkour documentary. Made by practitioners, we have tried our best to ensure that this short film gives the most accurate information possible about parkour and the methods and ideas behind it.
    It is a deliberate departure from the typical 'media parkour' you might see on TV and aims to provide reliable information to both newcomers and experienced practitioners alike.

    I like how the parkour shown in this video wasn't "here look this guy does like 3 useless flips and also stands on his hands for awhile", it was useful parkour, like you could get very far in life using this parkour to your advantage.

    I'd recommend finding a group of parkour practitioners near where you live. They'll be able to help get you started and make suggestions about what you might want to work on. The basics are important though, so balance, controlled small jumps, accuracy and god landing technique would be a few things to start working on :)

  • @Obsidian1138
    @Obsidian1138  14 ปีที่แล้ว

    Yes. If you mean Dave's voice-over, he's from Sheffield, and has also spent a few years living in Manchester. The majority of the footage in this documentary was filmed in Manchester.

    when i was a kid i always loved climbing, id always find myself at the top of a tree with the branches thinner than my pinky. i think i started to get turned away from physical activity in middle school and junior high, as i was always among the worst at all the competitive sports they had us play. but as of lately ive gained a new interest in it thanks to a class at school re-introducing me to climbing, as we have a rock wall at my school. id really like to try my hand at parkour some time.

    This was so worth the 40 minutes or so i put into watching. Best documentary ever, and y'all turned parkour from a dream, to a slow coming reality for me. I go to the park for conditioning and strength training, sadly nobody in my small town does parkour, so i started my friend on it too.

    @KittenPryde23 I recommend running shoes. Personally, I use either Nike Darts or Asics Patriots, but anything which is comfortable, light and flexible should be fine for parkour.

    Yeah, i have been working out indoors every day, but i live in BC Canada where the weather is pretty wet at this time of year. I run around lots with my friends, but i am going to get serious about parkour when summer starts and i am out of school for a few months.

    Parkour sight is something I believe you develop. Just train on what you know and as you gain new skills, you will begin to see the world around you in a different way. You will begin to see things you've never noticed before or places you've never been. Keep it up!

    @ParkourInspiration As I said at the beginning of the doc, the purpose was to explain Parkour and to correct the problems caused by other attempts at Parkour documentaries. We just thought the community needed it, as there was no documentary that really explained Parkour accurately before. No purpose, other than to help people improve their understanding of Parkour. But don't take our word for it ;)

  • @Obsidian1138
    @Obsidian1138  15 ปีที่แล้ว

    Thanks :) It sounds like you're approaching your training the right way. Too many people go straight for the big jumps, which isn't going to do your knee joints any good in the long run. Build up over a period of time with conditioning and practice, and you'll continue to improve, whilst avoiding serious injury.

    Amazing! This video has change my perspective of parkour in many ways! I see how people ask you questions like "how should I train", or "how did he do that?" but I can also guess that those are not the questions you're really looking for in this case. These videos aren't just about some cool movements and buffed ninjas - it's a guide to how parkour can become your life. I'm feeling like I'm gonna take my practise to a whole different level now. Thanks guys!

    We have access to a gymnastics gym which we visit occasionally. Some people also use weights gyms, but I don't personally.
    New York city does have some good spots for parkour if you look around. I've trained there twice. There's a parkour group there who train regularly. Check the nyparkour website for information on when and where they train :)

    @rappk
    Firstly, thanks for your comments. All feedback is much appreciated :)
    The reason I left out mention of David when writing this is simply because I wanted to explain parkour in a new way. I wanted to give people a chance to start afresh with their understanding, and to do that I had to avoid using any of the common phrases or reference points that the community regularly uses.
    I think it accurately reflects David's expressed views on parkour, but who knows for sure how David thinks?

    This documentary was the most well explained video on parkour in general, besides maybe Tk17's Pilgrimage video, which was kind of confusing to some. But this was good. Thank you for spend your time on this I very much enjoyed it.

    tricking is freerunning. It is not showing off it is a freedom of expression. Its like parkour but finding ways to express yourself with less emphasis on being quick and efficient. I do both parkour and freerunning and can tell you I myself and those I train with don't do it just to show off.

    From my personal experience, people 'trick' to show off, and that is not in the spirit of Parkour. However, if you trick to try and see yourself improve at a specific movement, then it is definitely in the spirit of Parkour! As mentioned in this documentary, we are all individuals and can have our own styles. I personally don't find any place for flips Parkour, but, for instance, I often reverse vault when kong vaults would be more efficient. Practise Parkour for yourself only :)

  • @Obsidian1138
    @Obsidian1138  14 ปีที่แล้ว

    @lukacho5 We trained on the streets. We do occasionally go to a gymnastics gym, but it's not very useful for actual parkour movements. The majority of training should be done outside.

    a few days ago i went from doing little to no training to full strenuous workout (moving out) and now can't straighten my arm over 100 degrees. Not exactly a sob story but just to all the people commenting saying that they will start training "RIGHT AWAY" don't throw yourself into it fully, work yourself up or you may be out of action for a few days or back to where you started.

  • @ofnir123
    @ofnir123 13 ปีที่แล้ว

    @khanriza well, I say don't use the gym that much for parkour training. why? when you work out at the gym, you isolate the muscles. parkour uses LOTS of muscles, and even the small ones we might not be aware of. Instead, do some bodyweight exercises. the only way to know if you're fit enough it to try it though.
    and BTW there's nothing preventing you from being stronger than you need to. just don't go too big 'cause you'll get too heavy

You'll lose weight by training, and because parkour is fun, it shouldn't seem like such a chore, as perhaps going to the gym might seem ;) Don't worry about your fitness. Lots of people who start parkour are fairly out of shape. Fitness will come through training regularly, and eating sensibly :)

    Hi! How about training also in the rain or otherwise slippery circumstances? During my ten years of pk here in Finland, it's quite often snowy, icy or wet so it highlights the adaptation and carefulness, the core of pk, doesn't it... People sooo often just avoid the "bad" weather - a prehistoric instinct that humans no longer need if&when we have warm houses&shower, medication, food etc luxury. Life is random and versatile as the weather, so can pk be.
    Still surely, this document is pretty superior! :] And ancient. ;p (though too bad I can't always understand your dialect..)
