  • Join Swami Sarvapriyananda and Michael James, two of the most renowned Advaita teachers of our time, as they delve into the depths of Advaita philosophy. Witness their enlightening conversation as they address doubts and questions about the non-dual path, blending the wisdom of Advaita Vedanta texts and Bhagavan Ramana Maharshi's teachings. Don't miss this unique opportunity to see these two spiritual luminaries in the same frame, sharing their insights and guiding seekers on the path to self-realization.
Understanding Deep Sleep and Self-Realization in Advaita Vedanta
Deep Sleep: Blankness or Pure Awareness?
The question of whether deep sleep is a state of blankness or pure awareness has different interpretations in classical Advaita Vedanta. While some might call deep sleep a "blankness," classical writers usually refer to it as a causal or seed state. This state holds all our waking and dream impressions in a potential form, which later manifest in waking and dreaming experiences.
A radical school of non-dualists might argue that deep sleep is a state of pure awareness, where only the Atman (the true self) exists. However, another interpretation suggests that pure awareness is always present, whether in waking, dreaming, or deep sleep states.
    The World After Self-Realization
In Advaita Vedanta, the world after self-realization is often described as both existing and not existing. Although enlightened individuals may still experience the world as we do, they perceive it differently. They see the underlying reality or Brahman, which is the one, indivisible essence of existence. Thus, the world is real for the enlightened person, but only in the sense that they recognize the underlying reality behind it.
Enlightened individuals can still interact with the world as we do, but they do not identify with the body, mind, or personality. Instead, they know themselves as the one reality or Brahman that pervades everything. This perspective allows them to see the world as an expression of their true nature.
    The Real and the Unreal
The question of whether the world is real or unreal is complex in Advaita Vedanta. Some enlightened individuals, like Sri Ramakrishna, claim that the world is real. Others say the world is entirely unreal. This apparent contradiction is resolved when one understands that the world's reality is dependent on the perspective from which it is viewed.
For those who see the world as a multiplicity, the world is considered unreal.
For those who perceive the underlying reality, the world is real.
Only an enlightened person can truly understand the meaning of the world being real, as they have direct experience of the underlying reality.
    The Enlightened Perspective
In summary, deep sleep can be considered both a state of blankness and pure awareness, depending on one's interpretation. Self-realization does not necessarily mean the world ceases to exist; instead, it reveals the underlying reality that pervades everything. Enlightened individuals can still interact with the world, but they see it as an expression of their true nature. The world's reality ultimately depends on the perspective from which it is viewed.
Understanding the Nature of Ego, Karma, and Spiritual Practice Amidst Worldly Responsibilities
The Ego and the Illusion of Multiplicity
The ego is the source of all multiplicity, which only appears in its view
Investigating the ego is the key to giving up everything, as it is the seed that generates all multiplicity
When the ego is not present, there is no multiplicity
Sleep as a State of Pure Awareness
Sleep is a state of pure awareness, with the only difference being the absence of the ego
The ego is a false awareness of ourselves and from its perspective, sleep appears as a state of blank or darkness
Sleep, from the radical school of Advaita perspective, is the state where pure awareness shines alone, knowing itself as pure awareness
The Law of Karma and its Effects on Spiritual Practice
The law of karma encompasses three types: Agamya (actions done according to our will), Sanchita (accumulated results of actions), and Prarabda (destiny or predetermined experiences)
The actions we perform in life are determined by our destiny, which is chosen by God or Guru, and are designed to be conducive to our spiritual development
We are free to choose what we want to experience and what we try to experience, but our experiences are already predetermined
Balancing Spiritual Practice and Worldly Responsibilities
Fulfilling worldly responsibilities and taking care of our family is not an obstacle to spiritual progress

Wow, what a blessing to listen to this Q&A session! For the one plus hour my False Self completely dissolved into the Real Self. My gratitude to whoever made this possible. Sri James’s Happiness of Being was my first serious start of Atma vichara, which started a serious spiritual journey, for which my ego is ever grateful. My recent visit to Ramanashram was indeed an uplifting experience. I’m also very grateful for Swamiji’s tireless work in mentoring spiritual seekers in their efforts to gain Atma Jnanam. Using de term ' investigate' as enquiry into de Self cud perhaps more easily help in saying : thru' a relaxed mindful living by Observing our thoughts movement speech like a witness Consciousness, in self Awareness gradually leads us into self enquiry... Self investigation, Self Observing objectively as a natural practise of discipline. 🧡🕉💚

I would love to see a dialogue with Michael and Ira Schepetin. Both men a similar age. Both travelled to India with the hippies (as they say) and both met their guru and both amazing exponents of Vedanta. The 1960's hippie generation, with the psychedelic tool kit is slowly fading into history.

Pranams🙏🙏 to Swamiji and Both of you.
I had been reading Advait as told by Sw Vivekananda and Thakur as I am deeply connected to RK mission and Mutt, ( presently in Mumbai) I am also trying to meditate since my college days and still trying as a retiree 😊.
One question that haunts always is that whether the Brahman the non dual as we call it, is self conscious, self aware existence ( here comes the term ishwar or god who knows all), or its just like any other energy like electricity etc ( illuminates multiple carrier like fan, Car etc similar to ghat- akaash analogy in veda) this energy seems to be non living, non conscious of own existence and we can control it.
It seems to be a point of main differences of ideology between adwait and the physics or science, till this points both seems to be more or less agreeing with each other. Pranams 🙏🌹🙏 Rajesh

Gaudapada acharya has answered this in Mandukya Karika in 4.81 and Shankaracharya has commented on it.
4.81( Reality which is) free from birth, and (which is) free from sleep and dream, reveals itself by itself. For, this Dharma (i.e., Atman) is from its very nature ever-luminous.
      Sankara’s Commentary
The nature of that which is realisable by the wise is again described : - It (Atman) reveals itself by itself. It does not depend for its revelation upon any external 1 light, such as the sun. etc. Self-luminosity 2 is its very nature. It is ever-luminous. This is the inherent •characteristic of the Dharma, known as Atman.

    3 karmas.
    1. Agamya. Those fruits which have been accumulated by actions done according to my will in the past [include past lives as well].
    2. संचित Sanchita: Those fruits of past actions, which are due to Agamya, gets stored here in Sanchita. This is a vast heap. We accumulate more and more here in each life.
प्रारब्ध Prarabda: God or Guru allocates a limited amount of fruits for each life, which is most beneficial for spiritual progress. This is predetermined and could be termed as destiny for this life. Yet it is my *will* to experience what and how. Unwisely or wisely i create more Agamya in this life, while experiencing प्रारब्ध prarabda.
Did I get this right 😮😢😂.

'pRathibodha viditam matam' of Kenopanishad clearly settles the issue of whether enlightenment is an experience or not. It's like, once a person realises the truth of Bangle is gold, will he stop seeing Bangle? See something different?
Once gold is realised as the one which lends existence to Bangle, what happens is that the realised person sees not Only the Bangle but the gold also which is in and through it. Remove the gold and what remains is only the name Bangle. So really speaking all gold ornaments are nothing but gold in different names and forms. This is the way realised persons see once they gain the knowledge of Brahman. Vedantha DOES NOT want to give a new experience of Brahman as it's already experienced always as clearly spelt in Kenopanishad mantra.

Pure awareness may be there in deep sleep then upon dreaming or awakening the veil of ignorance comes down and has us forget that we were in pure awareness. Perhaps the "unenlightened" forget, while the enlightened don't forget.

    • @arjunrathore8950
      @arjunrathore8950 ปีที่แล้ว

In Advaita there is no ambiguity regarding deep sleep. Waking and dream there is wrong apprehension ( world is known) and non-apprehension ( reality is not known). Deep sleep is state of just non-apprehension (reality is not known). Gaudapada’s Mandukya Karika verse 1.11 to 1.15 is absolutely clear on it. Also Mandukya 7th mantra dismisses the sleep knower.
