    WWF WrestleMania 13 took place on March 23rd 1997 in the Rosemont Horizon in Chicago, Il. While including a critically acclaimed submission match between Bret Hart and Stone Cold Steve Austin, WrestleMania 13 has the distinction of being the WrestleMania event with the lowest ever PPV buyrate.
    The Road to WrestleMania 13 was filled with twists and turns, most of which centered around the WWF Championship. When Shawn Michaels "lost his smile" and forfeited the WWF title, the company seemed to change direction on an almost weekly basis; the main event of Mania seemed to be up in the air until the 11th hour. In the end, Sycho Sid defended the championship against The Undertaker in the main event, while Bret Hart vs Steve Austin was placed in the middle of the card. The Austin vs Hart match, quite simply, is a classic. Featuring what many call the greatest double-turn in the history of wrestling, the outcome of the match left Bret Hart getting boo'd while Austin was cheered like a hero.
    Also at Mania 13, Rocky Maivia defended the Intercontinental Championship against The Sultan, Hunter Hearst Helmsley had a grudge match with Goldust, and the Nation of Domination took on Ahmed Johnson & The Legion of Doom in a Chicago Street Fight. Mania 13 was definitely a departure from the usual tone of previous WrestleMania events; some of it worked, some of it didn't.

It's peak 90's WWF at its best out of arguably its worst point in said decade. This one somehow fused classic wrestling psychology with a modern twist that made it feel anything but a work. @@KBell119 Owen & Bret both are legendary, they were destined for wrestling greatness as Stu stretched them and trained them from birth pretty much. Owen didn’t (tragically) have a full career and even though he did the aerial moves where Bret didn’t I say Bret was a little better as his ring psychology and ability (such as here) to call matches and spots and just always seem to know what was the right move at a particular time within a match. Yea he had his typical spots like the face first turnbuckle crash and offensively with the 2nd rope elbow drop and Russian leg sweep but never would you say Bret had the same match or was predictable.

    Hey WB. I know you've said before that you believe that the W13 main events was initially going to be Bret vs Shawn and that nobody will change your mind on that, but I thought I would give it a try, and I'm not likely to get a better opportunity than this video any time soon so I may as well give it a go. Here are my reasons:
    1. Whilst it is true that they seemed to be angling Bret vs Shawn. This was actually in line with Bret's character at the time having his matches interrupted. This was a trend way before Shawn lost his smile and I believe the originally booking was that Austin would've kept interrupting Bret v Shawn leading to them having the match as it was finally booked.
    2. On the same Thursday RAW that Shawn lost his smile was also the debut of Stone Cold's silver jacket. They filmed the new Austin-centric Raw is War intro prior to this (where Austin is still wearing his old gear) suggesting that his push was well planted by this point.
    3. Literally nobody else worked with Austin during this period and nobody was in a position to put him over other than Bret (except ironically Shawn himself). The WWF card leading up to Wrestlemania 13 consisted almost entirely of heels during this period. Bret was really the only option they had if they intended to babyface Austin.
    4. You mention your disappointment at Owen v Bulldog didn't happen at W13 which seemed to be the intention. It seems odd that they seemed booked for a collision course having disagreements every night but then as soon as the European Tour started (after Shawn lost his smile) they breifly begin wroking well together again. The night following W13 on RAW they suddenly fight again only for it to be stopped by Bret as a set up for the Hart foundation. I think this was due to changes made due to Shawn losing his smile: Keep in mind the Undertaker was likely to forward his story with Paul Bearer (who was managing Vader and Mankind) who were supposed to have a fued that we know was called off for unspecified reasons.
    Here's what I think happened when Shawn Lost His Smile;
    I think initially the planned main event was going to be a Shawn vs Sycho Sid rematch. Don't mock it because it sounds boring, I think this is well within what Vince would've booked at the time. You also have to consider that they had used promos to undermine the lost two conflicts by insinuating that they had both (Shawn and Sid) done 'evil' actions and won unfairly at SS and RR. I suspect the final W13 match was to decide who would win without any cameras being used as weapons. After Shawn lost his smile, my guess is that the Undertaker was brought in as the replacement (the only other candidate being involved in the Royal Rumble being Vader). I think this resulted in the planned Undertaker vs Vader match (which probably would've involved Mankind in some capacity) being lost leading to the Bret and Owen angle being lessened so they could team up against Vader/Mankind. They only had the weeks after Shawn Lost His Smile to get some heat between Owen/Bulldog and Mankind/Vader and you can tell the whole thing was hastily planned.
    Ultimatly though the Austin vs Bret match is just the clear tragectory for both men's storylines at that point and whatever evidence exists for Bret vs Shawn also works for that angle since the build-up consisted of Austin interrupting Bret's planned match-ups. There's also no reason for Bret not to face SId in the main event either - if they wanted it to go down that way. Really I think there's only one reason why people believe a Bret vs Michaels main event was on the cards and it's a meta-reason: Because they think Shawn was dodging Bret with his knee injury, but if you look at the actual booking there's really nothing to support it.
    Anyway, thanks to anyone who read this diatribe. I appreciate it.

      When we hear about "the plan" nowadays, it is mostly filtered down from the word of Meltzer, I'm sure it was the same then but there is a entire subculture of Internet rumour mills that are way bigger than they were back then. "The plan" didn't come from speculation from ominous sources, it was detailed by Bret in his book. A book which he started writing after he had left wwe, he had no interest in having to work anybody about what was going on, the rematch with HBK was the plan, and the programs with Austin and Sid were to (1) keep th busy before Mania, and (2) to be renewed after Mania so they can keep Hart and Michaels away from each other for a while to put it on probably at a big event like Summerslam. They kept Austin close to Bret's proximity because they stumbled on something they didn't know they were going to stumble on (Austin) and they wanted to make sure he stayed hot despite. I think Austin would have worked with Shamrock in a badass v badass match, Taker and Sid would have been a non title shindig while Hbk-Hart closed things.

Especially how intense the story was getting at this point. So I avoided it. Only seeing clips on TV. I would say he did pass the torch at WM 12 when he dropped the belt to Shawn. Shawn just wouldn't allow a true rivalry between the two where they would both do the job for each other over the foreseeable future. Its a shame. The Austin/Bret rivalry shows what is possible when two people respect each other and are willing to work professionally with each other. Austin didn't have to win any matches with Bret to elevate himself as a star and a performer.
