    Great topics bud I rarely get depressed and have a few activities and hobbies but I do get it, being a stranger in a strange land is different, culture shock comes into play I wouldn't live there if I got the same feeling as I've had in a couple countries I've visited

    I just found your channel. I've lived in Thailand for at least 15 years of my life. Now I am living in Bucerias, MX. I wanted to be closer to my kids in California and Hawaii. It was great at first...but my kids have their own lives now. I am thinking about moving to Kampot. I miss SE Asia. My kids say if you want to do it. I'm 68 and I speak Thai and Spanish. I think I can pick up the basics in Cambodia.

    Tropical paradise is basically NYC/DC July all year long, isn't it? Lots of people genuinely hate that. Lots of people would get depressed just from the climate alone.

      fair point. We do have "seasons" however they are a bit different than the Metro DC area. Here we have "wet season" still warm but not hot, "high season" aka tourist season, dry and reasonably cool, and then we have "dry season" which is just hot (and dusty)
      Thanks for your input, always nice to get a comment from the best channel in the world (love the name btw) cheers Alex, all the best

      Solitude is my cup of tea as well. I generally avoid other people until after I've observed them a bit. If they seem like a decent person I might chat them up a bit. I have a select few here in Cambodia that I see once or twice a week.

    My depression kicked in after 7 months straight- working with a traveling monster truck entertainment tour. Rarely saw the same people day in and day out. In my experience, I agree 💯 with Jon. Finding a way to relate to others in the moment, and getting involved in any local activities, events or even gatherings your invited to, is a big help. If I knew that I was staying somewhere for longer than a week, I would work on building more meaningful connections with people & sometimes open up to them and have a more human interaction/ connection

    Thanks for the vid Jon, very insightful and for sure something all men should talk more about...mental health.

    • @JonAbroad
      @JonAbroad  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Absolutely. We still have the old "macho man" attitude. I say, just like the bum check when you hit a certain age, perhaps we should also just talk to a doctor about our feelings and mental status. I saw a report that said 1 in 4 Americans are prescribed antidepressants. I think if there has been some preventative maintenance done, perhaps that number wouldn't be so high

    As you read this I do hope you are feeling great!
    Why does anyone get depressed? I don't think expats are more prone to depression.
    I do think it is harder for expats to work their way out of a bout with depression. Lots of reasons for this with the main one being expats may create a unique reality.
    I've lived in Saudi Arabia 5 years, Thailand for 11 and 9 US states.... and... will be beginning to live in Cambodia in 6 months.

      @@JonAbroad IT WAS HOT (lol)
      It was rugged. This was in the 1980's, prior to cell phones and certainly prior to the liberalization of the kingdom. I traveled the whole of the country chasing infrastructure projects.
      I received two 'R & R's and a home leave per year to maintain sanity. That's how I first came to Bangkok in 1982.
      I yearn to visit Saudi again and may well do so to visit a friend. But, mostly I cherish the memories. Surprisingly, they are a hospitable people.
      I was in the first half of my thirties.
