Jon Abroad is a video story of my living abroad. I created this channel as a means of entertainment, not just for the viewer but for me as well. I am learning how to make videos and edit them on the fly. This is new to me but I am enjoying it quite a bit. I am not paid and I am not sponsored. I am currently living in Cambodia, but just like all things in life, everything is subject to change. If an opportunity presents itself and the timing is right, I may just choose another corner of the earth. We are all human and I truly enjoy the interaction with those from all over this little planet of ours. I am making these videos so you can see how I choose to explore. I encourage you to explore on your own, find your way of enjoying you time.
Khmer New Year 2024 បុណ្យចូលឆ្នាំខ្មែ
Cambodian New Year (បុណ្យចូលឆ្នាំខ្មែរ) is the traditional celebration of the solar new year in Cambodia. A three-day public holiday in the country, the observance begins on New Year's Day, which usually falls on 13 April or 14 April, which is the end of the harvesting season, when farmers enjoy the fruits of their labor before the rainy season begins. Khmers living abroad may choose to celebrate during a weekend rather than just specifically 13 April through 16 April. The Khmer New Year coincides with the traditional solar new year in several parts of India, Bangladesh, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Myanmar, Laos and Thailand.

Tropical paradise is basically NYC/DC July all year long, isn't it? Lots of people genuinely hate that. Lots of people would get depressed just from the climate alone.
fair point. We do have "seasons" however they are a bit different than the Metro DC area. Here we have "wet season" still warm but not hot, "high season" aka tourist season, dry and reasonably cool, and then we have "dry season" which is just hot (and dusty) Thanks for your input, always nice to get a comment from the best channel in the world (love the name btw) cheers Alex, all the best

I've been living in Thailand for three years. Just moved to Siem Reap. Been looking around Kampot online. Looks good. Miss the beach already. Coming down June 1 for a closer look. Lets have a beer. Be good to talk with another American
give me a shout when you're in town. it'll be a bit rainy but being in Thailand you'll be used to that Usually just a spit for an hour or so in June.
Nicely done. Good vibe……subscribed. Why you live in kampot and not Siem reap for instance?
Kampot is a little slower of a town and the breeze from the coast for me is more enjoyable. The weather also seems to be a bit cooler in general.
thank you so much for all this info! you don't rent the motorbike anymore? did you purchase your own? if so, how much?
I've never rented a moto once I moved here. Used motos are inexpensive depending on what you are looking for. For example a used airblade is less than $500 and they work just fine.
Thanks for sharing
happy to help
Thanks for sharing
glad you found it useful
Can you live $1000 per month simple life. Old man
you could but I don't suggest it.
I guess I'm saying that a budget of 1k is fine. My concern is whether you are saving money as well for any emergencies that you might run into. 1K a month isn't going to allow you to save much cash. Always make sure to have a contingency plan.
Aye karamba Jon! Wow! I’d probably do the monkey cries from broken bones like that! Glad you’re good now ❤
🤣 ya I'm all good now 🙏🏻
Top bloke you have a great radio voice 😂 thanks for the info, subscribed.
Thank you sir. I hate the sound of my own voice. It makes editing video so difficult 😁.
Great to see you are back to 100%, I once crashed my scooter in Chiang Mai but managed to stop the fall with my face hitting the road directly...fun times, I looked like the elephant man's little bother after it. I came across a channel called "Saved in Svay" its a new channel, (I was subscriber 14). A colab vlog with you two or an interview/podcast would be great to see as I think you two guys have some topics in common. Lastly don't knock your cost of living vlogs, all of us still in the west are amazed by them. Safe travels over the summer
Thank you sir. I will check out that channel. I appreciate your words of encouragement
@@JonAbroad thanks for the vlog mate, always entertaining. HAVE A GREAT WEEKEND

Thailand is much cheaper for electric, I never need to use Aircon just a fan, being next to the sea, it’s around $20 a month for a 50sgm studio
Electric is expensive in Cambodia by the KwH. In comparison in the state I loved in it was 11 cents per KwH. My house is large with 2 floors, it takes a bit to keep it comfortable in the hot season.
Hey Jon, Congratulations on surviving your ordeal! The story you tell is sobering and reminds us all that our world may change in a heartbeat. You are quite fortunate to be ‘intact’. Many may be interested in more detail about your experience accessing diverse medical care in Kampot… just a thought in case you are ever at a loss for subject matter for a video. I know I would find it interesting having moved to Siem Reap early in December. I am certain you will be celebrating LIFE for quite a while after this episode. Carl
Thanks Carl for your kind words. How is SR treating you?
@@JonAbroad SR has been pleasant enough; however, the shingles virus hit a month ago and upset my world. It is abating gradually and I will soon be back on track ‘discovering’.
very cool. I'm happy to see you keeping your head up. You've been through a lot and I admire your strength. (I took the time to watch your video) I'm proud of you. Stay healthy sir and keep exploring. 💪🏻😊

Hi thx for the Information and the Video.. Can you please write the Transport App i didn't understood it Complete... ☺️
Passapp and Grab. I prefer passapp myself but Grab will work in Thailand Vietnam as well. If you are just passing through, maybe Grab will be the better choice. Take a look at the video called "download these apps" I have a more detailed description of them on there.
Nice.. I visited Kampot in 2022
awesome, what was your impression? did you enjoy your time?
@@JonAbroad it’s pleasant, only thing is not much good paying jobs available.. you have to create your own in Kampot.. but it’s laid back
I don't know much in the area of paid work in Kampot. I like the slow pace of Kampot. Are you still in Cambodia?
@@JonAbroad no.. I left back USA end of 2022.., economy was down .. Siem Reap a ghost town
That's fair. Any future travel plans in the making?
How can i get help when i get to Cambodia from usa
I don't know what you are referring to as far as "help". I'm happy to answer questions if you could be more specific.
@@JonAbroad information to get rent appartment, extended retirement visa
your best bet is to join some Facebook groups. there are some that are geared towards a town or city. In Kampot there is a group called "Kampot Noticeboard" and there are lots of people showing rentals and such. Do a search in these groups and find posts related to what you are looking for. In regards to your visa, again check the Facebook groups. You'll find someone recommending an agent and read the comments to see what others are saying. I hope this helps
Simple clear video great information
Glad it was helpful!
Hey John! Thanks for sharing this valuable info. How are your download & upload speeds? Didnt you get a cable installed for faster speeds? Im a video editor in Southwest USA planning to work from Siem Reap, long-term. I'd love to hear what your setup is like & what speeds you get today. Thanks
Metfone fiber is decent and recently Smart has a fiber+ package that is faster and like $2 cheaper. It seems to be more stable (for me in my area anyway) I'm getting about 90mbps up/down. they do offer commercial packages with much faster connections, but honestly, 90 is plenty fast for me. I guess if gaming a lot the latency could be an issue.
@@JonAbroad 90 isn’t bad! I’m getting 311mbps but I would never expect that to come out of Cambodia just yet 😅 I’m actually very happy with 90 mbps. Thanks for your quick response, John, and warm regards ✌️
happy to help 🙏🏻 btw you can get 300+ speeds but at a commercial rates. look at this... www.smart.com.kh/get-smart/plans/smart-fiber-home-internet-of-the-future%E2%80%8B/ and this scroll to business 2... www.metfone.com.kh/en/internet/ftth
Definetly went through all these emotions when I was in Chaing Mai for 16 months, back in the US to reevaluate . Mostly likely will return to SEA in the next 6 months. Thanks for the vlog, well done
Thanks for watching. It seems we go through these cycles. I go back to the states every year to visit family typically for a month. About 2 weeks into it, I want to get back "home" to Cambodia.
Nice house pu Jon
thank you 🙏🏻🙏🏻
Thanks brother you are the best good retirement in Cambodia 🇰🇭. Thanks
Thanks for watching 🙏🏻
Seems very inexpensive for the size place you have & the life you live. -- I hear Siem Reap comes in a little cheaper and more to do ? -- I'm retired and somewhat frugal but insist on being comfortable & eating good. Health care has to be a higher priority so Siem Reap has the edge there. Primarily a cheap one hour flight to Bangkok for affordable quality medical & some fun a time or two per year ? Likely will visit Kampot for the experience. Several expats love it. -- Thanks for the info and don't forget to have some gratitude for your situation. Many likely envy it but can't do it ?
Siem Reap is a great place to live with the ease of the airport being so close. Kampot is near the coast and I enjoy the weather better down here. I have had a few friends from my home town move out here. I very much enjoy my way of life and what I do here. One thing I do wish is that I had more ideas for making videos. I've never really been the creative type. The channel is a hobby of sorts but I do enjoy the editing process as I'm learning so much from it. Thank you for watching, and if you have any ideas, please pass them along. 😊
@@JonAbroad > Without a doubt the weather & ocean breezes are a huge + and the biggest 'tradeoff' in my mind along with less congestion. Friends from home makes it sweeter. Almost all of mine have passed - family too - happens if you live long enough I suppose ? -- Bokor Mountain is also nice near there Siem Reap doesn't have & even cooler temps. ? Or the beach if your into that ? -- Not so sure you would want to advertise the beauty of your life there w/o the risk of ruining it from additional excessive growth ? I'm a poor one for that type of creativity myself. I can only suggest perhaps duplicating the most success you can find / the wheel has already been invented. -?- Best of luck and remember the gratitude.
these videos are super helpful btw.. im planning on moving to kampot. seems like the perfect place for me. i just hope the locals in the farmers markets dont try to scam me too much
the big market is the easiest place to find everything from vegetables to meat to fish. no scams
looking forward to it! thanks@@JonAbroad
any time. thanks for watching
just meal prepping saves a couple of hundred. i live in eastern europe and buy all of my foods in bazaars and it saves a ton to make food in bulk and make sure the jars are sterilized so it keeps for weeks in the fridge
you can meal prep for a month if you want to. I run to the market once a week for provisions. I eat about 3 meals a week at home. As a single guy it's often just as cheap to eat out to be fair.
i just know from a lot of experience that i can buy things and feel happy from it for a while, and then take it completely granted later and dont feel like i need it. so i think its this thing that we should really be sure that we are spending it right, otherwise it will become this crutch instead of seeking more fulfilling happiness. and of course if someone cant get base necessities that is a different story..
I agree. check out the "why I left america" video. It goes into this a little bit more

Is electricity supply and water supply stable in cambodia? What can you say about their reliability and water hygiene and the wifi?
Electric is stable in town for the most part. We do see outages from time to time, usually weather related. Water depending on where you live could be well or city. I've had both. Most places will have pumps that kick on to get better water pressure. My current house is on city water and doesn't need a pump. Tap water is fine for showers, laundry etc. Don't drink the tap water, even the locals don't. Wifi is all dependent on what service you use. Most businesses around have wifi but if you get smart with a data plan ($6/mo) you won't ever need wifi.
@@JonAbroadnot quite bad thanks
Happy to help.
Thanks! Good timing for me.
Counting down the days yet?
@@JonAbroad Sure! Today marks 50 days to departure. It won't be long now. Looking forward to being in SE Asia once again.
It's a great place to be. Especially with how the west is proving to be a difficult place to navigate. (In my opinion)
Good app info. Smart (SmartNas app), how do you fund your service. I saw on the website, Smart Card, Wallet, Bank Card -- I may not want to use a bank card.
I have a bank account here locally in Cambodia that I use to "top up" but you can go to any smart shop to do that as well. You can also buy scratch-off style top-ups from little home front shops as well. If you are abroad and need to top-up using your bank card is secure. I've never had an issue with it. Thanks for watching and thank you for your question. Cheers
Using a VPN will allow you to download these apps regardless of where you are :) Cheers! How's it going? I'll be there in April / May :) Shoutout Android users!
I was trying to help a buddy get google voice arranged and even using a VPN it still detected he was outside of the US. I don't know if Google detects VPNs during setup or what. Other items I have problems using VPNs for is ChatGPT, it detects VPNs and even logging into my account that was setup in the US, it won't let me log in and states it's not available in my country. Anyway, this video was just an idea I had, so I turned it into a video. Thanks for your input and thanks for watching, cheers.
I have not tried GV outside the US. Since it is US centric, it might be best to use it outside the US with a VPN active so Google does not see a foreign IP address. An alternative option is Tossable Digits, they have an Expats plan where one can park their US phone number and if needed transfer calls to that number to a foreign phone number.
I use Google Voice daily. Once it's been setup, you won't need a VPN. So if you are still in the US or have already set one up in the US, it will work flawlessly. I send and receive texts as well as make and receive phone calls. Personally when I moved here I ported my phone number and ditched my T-Mobile account. Due to the age of my parents, I wanted to make sure they could call me on the same phone number they have been using for 10+ years.
Whenever I go back to visit the US I just get a prepaid sim, as long as I have internet I can still use Google voice. Basically just using the prepaid service as a source of internet when away from wifi.
I too live in Kampot. 3+ years, and I estimate that my monthly budget here is $1200.-
Thanks for your input. Among whom I have chatted with $1200 is right about average. Thanks for watching 🙏🏻
@@JonAbroad what is the requirements for ER VISA I am above 60 years old. Do I need criminal background check from us and social security monthly income Do I have to apostitile them??
Easiest way is to come in on a E "tourist" visa, find an agent to convert to a one year ER visa. Just bring your SS statement. As long as it shows you have income monthly, it's fairly easy and straight forward. You can extend as much as you want.
Thanks 😊
You're very welcome
I just ran across this and I used to live in Siem Reap about 5 years ago. Very likely returning in a few months. I'm surprised to hear that Kampot is basically the same with prices since it's by the ocean. Good to know!
Kampot is a beautiful little river town. The sea is close but Kampot isn't an ocean town. It's quiet but still has plenty of activities. If you don't mind me asking, why did you leave 5 years ago?
@@JonAbroad At the time, I got homesick after having some expat made Mexican food, and missed concerts, karaoke, and a bunch of other stuff. A lot has changed and so I'm going back to Siem Reap in June and I'm ready to live there indefinitely. There's no way I'll save to retire in the States.
May I ask how did you find your houses for rent in Kampot?
Facebook groups are a large help. In Kampot there is a Facebook group named "Kampot notice board" people selling stuff, asking for help, restaurants. It has a search function and is a great help.
Hi bud the comments on your why I left America VLog are turned off 📴 my idea of success is I made my money lived a descent life and soon gonna cash in and live well unemployed !!! Here in Namerica you need to slave till your 65 and almost need to be married to survive on pensions and I don't plan on staying on the gerbil wheel that long 😄😄
I don't recall turning off comments on that video, I will look into it. 65 if you're lucky. Most that I talk to say 68, adding more years increases the pension by a few dimes. Go out and live your best life by any means necessary. Life is too uncertain just hope you'll live long enough to enjoy the fruits of your labor. Thank you for watching.
Great topics bud I rarely get depressed and have a few activities and hobbies but I do get it, being a stranger in a strange land is different, culture shock comes into play I wouldn't live there if I got the same feeling as I've had in a couple countries I've visited ✌️✌️

Naw, I'm not a drinker, never really have been. When I go out it's coke or juice, last night I just drank bottled water. Wednesday is pool league night in Kampot. Thank you for watching
Interesting. Have you met any kiwis or Aussies ? Is there an ex Pat community ?
There is a nice expat community here. I've got 2 kiwi mates and a couple Aussie mates as well. A few Brits and Scots as well. The expat group I socialize with are mostly married to khmers and are well integrated in the local community.

A frugal yet comfortable studio w/ac is fine with me. Don't smoke or drink and quit chasing women. Too old and slow ! --All alone & happily divorced since 1989 so I'm quite content with good food eating out - mostly good deal hunting. -- However health care is important @ 73 so 'perhaps' -- Siem Reap is the better choice for quality hospitals ? -- What say you sir ? -- I have a $1500 budget & would like to save 400 - 500 / month - if possible. > Is that a doable thing with health insurance over there ? -- Biden's America is killing me financially ! So looking for cheap.
Keeping a cost of living below $1000 is certainly possible. Health insurance is not something I am able to speak on myself, you would have to do more research in that field of information. Best hospitals, Phnom Penh has the best of those. There are however great clinics with English speaking doctors and staff in every town that has an expat presence. Phnom Penh can be inexpensive if you stay further from the main areas of town. Just 10km out you can find deals. I would suggest that you have and maintain a healthy savings account for the "oh shit" moments of life. There are plenty of folks living in Cambodia who are on SSI (near the dollar amount you provided) and they pull it off just fine. Please keep in mind that what the US does in the financial sector can and will affect the world's finances.
Great information. Thanks.
Glad it was helpful!

Thank you for your kind words. 🙏🏻
I’m shocked that so many people are lost suffering alone.
As am I. When doing the research for this I was stunned. Thank you for watching and thank you for caring.
