Pickup Review: 2022 Nissan Frontier Pro-4X | Driving.ca

  • People stare at the new Nissan Frontier, long and hard. That's the first thing I noticed about my tester, a 2022 Frontier PRO-4X, finished in eye-catching Tactical Green. That paint colour, combined with the Frontier's fresh, bold, and slightly ticked-off looking face are major attention getters.
"What's that colour called?" "Is it new this year?" "How much is that?" "We're admiring your truck!"
Curbside shopping pickup, Tim's drive-thru, stopped at a red light - doesn't matter. The Frontier's looks made a strong impression on those nearby.

Winter driving in heavy snow is pretty much all about the tires, not the vehicle.

@@edhcb9359 yep. Tires are a big part of it, but not all of it. I cringe when I see 2wd pickup here. They are mostly useless in the winter. I've been driving in Alaska for 46 years, and would not own a vehicle that isn't 4WD or AWD. I run BFG KO2s on my truck year round and they do great. On my Honda CRV, I switch to Blizzaks in the winter, and Michelin radials in the summer.

I just bought the Pro4x a few weeks ago and I really like it a lot so far. I noticed the unsettled suspension going highway speeds a couple times. It was after hitting fairly large bumps. Other than that, I really like the way it drives and the heavy steering. This truck is light years ahead of my 2019 Ranger.

    I love mine.
I appreciate your review, many of the others feel cookie cutter, this feels genuine. Big thanks for not griping about the lack of telescoping steering.
My only two gripes about the truck are the wide turning radius. It feels wider than my F150 supercrew. The other is lack of defrost only heat, a feature I use regularly in all of my vehicles. Settings are floor & defrost, Panel and floor, and panel only.
The rig is a true head turner.

I owned a Nissan hardbody back in the day and loved it. Always liked Nissan. I have also owned Tacoma and currently have a new Ranger FX4. I live in Wyoming and in the mountains I just love the turbo and the responsiveness especially at elevation. I am not "brand loyal" and I actually really like this new Nissan. I am 6'3 and my knee kept knocking into the 4wd switch on test drive. The steering wheel doesn't telescope so I couldn't; move back farther. Loving all the new/updated mid sizers and hope they keep getting better.

It's a nice little truck that no one is buying, due to the ridiculous dealer markups. Unless you have an extra 10,000 dollars of your hard earned money to throw in the garbage can at your local dealer. It's also a first year model with the worst service departments in the industry . We all could live without a severely overpriced midsized pickup but Nissan on the other hand 🤔

Here’s a cold weather review from an owner. Me.
I’m a cold weather Pro-4x owner in Western Canada, and I’m not very happy. The steering is WAY, way too hard when it’s around 0 degrees. Hydraulic is NOT the way to go in freezing temps. Even very minor corrections on the freeway are work. Super, super annoying. Hoping it improves as the temperature rises. It gets slightly better as it starts circulating fluid, but remains annoying. Other quirks are the leather seats…..far too little leather. Almost all vinyl. They should call it the vinyl option with a few leather patches. Your rear will be sweating in minutes after you turn on the heated seats to high. Be carful about the weird 6-way power seats and the non-telescopic steering. It will work for some, but will annoy many over time. As you raise the seat, it seems to try and dump you off forward as it is hinged at the front. I’m still struggling hard to get used to it. Don’t think I will. I may have to resort to washers to raise the front like my crappy Tacoma. The lack of a screen off hard button forces you search sub menus for the off button embedded in the system pages….very annoying at night as the 9” is TOO bright at night. The fan on the HVAC is annoyingly loud in defrost settings but fine in other settings…..odd, but get some earplugs anyways. Most of all when it’s cold, the mileage is worse than my full sized F150……..15mpg maybe on the freeway at 70 mph. There gotta be something wrong with the fuel mapping in cold weather. I’m hoping warmer weather improves this. The cruise control is also wonky……..set it at 70mph, then watch it plummet to 60, then it drops a gear and floors it. WTF. Other than that. GREAT TRUCK. Lol.

BTW, you’re getting me mixed up with Perry the Frontier troll. I’m Canadian and live in central Alberta, Canada. I own a gun-metallic Pro-4x luxury model and I’m making an honest cold weather owners report. I can prove it. PM me and see. The milage is seriously poor……I’m hoping for better when this cold snap ends.

@@elizabethmiller7918 For the record, the seat does try to dump you off as it rises, there is no screen off hard button, the mileage is lousy and especially so in the frozen north, the leather is mostly NOT LEATHER and the steering is brutally hard when the vehicle is below -20 Celsius. These are FACTS that I’m living RIGHT NOW. R.

    • @elizabethmiller7918
      @elizabethmiller7918 2 ปีที่แล้ว

@@humz403 I dont think "Electronic" means what you think it means. (Engine adventures has vids on that where he tests out first the automatic electronics that work via brake actuation and then compares the push button rear diff locker). I grant you there is a lot of confusion ( and wrong) language out there, even from the manufacturer marketing folks. But the rear diff locker in these vehicles is properly called an "electrically actuated mechanical locker", not electronic. You did call it correctly "electric" in one of your posts. "electronic" means the computer uses, sensors and calculations and sends electrical impulses (in this case to the brakes) to distribute the torque via selective braking of wheels, and in the Frontier (an Xterra and Pathfinder etc... ) has such systems in all models even those which also have a push button rear locker. And it does work in all driving modes, whether you also have a rear locker or not. Now "electronic" sounds cooler, so some marketers will call anything "electronic", even if the term does not properly apply from an automotive engineering sense.
For an car enthusiast this should not be a difficult conversation.
