    This is a Motormouth couple car review of the all-new 2022 Nissan Frontier mid-size pickup truck. A 3.8 L naturally aspirated V6 with a 9 speed automatic transmission, 310 horsepower and 281 lb-ft of torque. The Frontier’s suspension is built to handle all the bumps, potholes and rocks you encounter. It offers Bilstein shocks which give you better control over rugged terrain. The shocks are standard on the Pro-4X models. The Frontier has a 4x4 drivetrain, 2-speed electronic transfer case with 4-HI and 4-LO, an independent double wishbone front suspension and a rear suspension with solid axles. The smooth shifting 9-speed automatic is good, it is a different automatic transmission than the one we recently reviewed in the new Pathfinder. This one is built by Jatco and designed by Mercedes-Benz. The new Nissan Frontier has a whole new exterior look and I think it could be best in class for styling. It’s rugged on the outside but has a very modern interior. The new Frontier has a bigger, bolder grille with the new Nissan logo and Frontier script. I like the rectangular shaped headlights, which are halogen on the base model, optional LED headlights depending on the trim you choose. The backend is a nice shape, it has standard LED taillights and fog lights and you see Nissan has added the Nissan script. The tailgate is damped so it’s so much easier to lift it up and down with one hand. The base model comes with 16” wheels all other trims 17”. You can get a 5 foot or 6 foot bed. and optional LED lighting in the bed, it is 1.4 inches taller so you get a more useable bed. There are two Frontier cabs to choose from, the King Cab and Crew Cab, the King Cab has seating for 4 and the Crew Cab for 5. The King Cab has rear suicide doors, which provide a larger opening for cargo and the Crew Cab has regular doors. Rear seats on the King Cab can face forward or flip up and out of the way for extra space. The Crew Cab has a 60/40 split rear bench that folds and lies flat. The rear seats flip up for additional cargo space. The interior is more comfortable, quieter and more durable than the outgoing model. It has sound absorbing acoustic glass and there is an available moonroof, 9” touchscreen, the largest in this class, a 10-speaker Fender Audio system, wireless charger, remote-engine start, heated front seats and heated steering wheel. The zero gravity front seats are very comfortable and would be great on a long trip. One from the base model on both the King Cab and Crew Cab gets you get the power driver’s seat, heated front cloth seats, a heated steering wheel and 17” wheels. There are only manual passenger seats available. The top Pro-4X model has the Bilstein off-road performance shockers, underbody skid plates, electronic locking differential, 17” all-terrain tires. You can get leather seats in a package on this model. The new Nissan Frontier has a rugged looking exterior with new rectangular shaped headlights, a bold and boxy grille with the Frontier script and the new Nissan logo. LED headlights are only available on the top trims of both the King Cab and Crew Cab but LED taillights and LED Fog lights are standard on the base model. What’s under the hood? A 3.8L naturally aspirated V6 with a 9-speed automatic transmission, 310 horsepower and 281 lb-ft of torque. It has the most horsepower in this segment with the Chevy Colorado in second with 308 horsepower. The King Cab S base model comes standard with 16” wheels, all other trims get 17” including the Crew Cab. The standard bed is 59.5 inches/5 feet and the long bed 73.3 inches/6 feet. Nissan is offering a new feature, tailgate lift assist for a smooth, more controlled motion. You can open and close the tailgate with just one hand. The King Cab has seating for four people and the Crew Cab for five. Nissan didn’t make this new Frontier any bigger, they said, their customers love the size.

    I can't wait to get off of work to drive my 2022 Nissan Frontier ProX Baja Storm. I will say this has been my best new vehicle purchase. I traded in my 2019 Nissan Titan SV. I miss the extra room. I do like the gas mileage. Less trips to the pump now. Quite ride, very responsive on the gas pedal and brakes. Handles very well on the turns. I have had it now for a month and a half. Tacoma owners are looking at it.

    Great review guys! I was planning on purchasing a new Tundra SR5, but I'm leaning toward getting yet another Frontier. Yes, I've owned 2 of them before, so I'm obviously a fan. The size is just right for me, but the reason I was planning to go full size this time is because midsize trucks have gotten almost as expensive as full size. I figured I may as well get a lot more capability for just a few grand more. However, I don't really need a full size truck and I do love this new Frontier. The loaded Pro4X Premium is $44k in the US which is steep, but a loaded Tundra SR5 would be $50k! Truck prices have gotten out of hand!

      @@timjones6637 I decided that I want at least a 6ft bed so I can get a small slide-in camper. Unfortunately, that rules out the Frontier because the payload is too low and the only Frontier you can get with the long bed is a poorly equipped SV. LED headlights, heated seats, etc aren't even available on the long bed Frontier. So I'm going to wait a year and get a Tundra SR5 which will cost in the upper $40s, but at least I won't have to compromise anything.

    The engine is why I'm choosing a Frontier over the Tacoma. Every Toyota truck I have driven with the 3.5, Tacoma or 4Runner feels like its working hard to reach in town speed limits. the Frontier even the previous 4.0 had plenty of power, the 3.8 is no different.

    Drum breaks are considered superior off-road / in trucks for a couple reasons. They have a higher static friction holding surface area and they are harder to get stuff inside of and mess up, when in mud water rock etc. Basically on a truck if you are parking with a loaded trailer on a hill, the friction surface is substantially larger for a given diameter of brake. This means the truck is much less likely to break away from the emergency brake. They are also cheaper to replace. The only real negative I know of would be heat build up, but that has been addressed numerous ways. This is why most brakes on 18 wheelers are still drum. Some have disc brakes on the front 2 wheels but almost all the others are drums. That is at least from what I have seen.

      Well said, drum brakes are old technology but it works and you are right about better suited for off road driving, I take my 2016 Tacoma on the trails quite a bit at 157K on it I have replaced the front brakes once already but the drums still going, just maintenance that’s all.

    • @benhaze1010
      @benhaze1010 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      You have some good points except about 18 wheelers; the industry has finally changed once the calipers became reliable and the added safety is quite considerable over drum brakes. They last far more longer than drum brakes. Also pretty much all semi-tractors come standard with disc brakes now. Toyota reasoning for sticking with drum brakes is not so relevant anymore except perhaps for the few doing hard core off-roading.

    I own a 2016 Tacoma with Manual transmission. The Tacoma V6 it’s just fine the problem is the gearing in the automatic transmission.
    Technology in trucks is good to a certain degree but not to justify a higher price tag or just for the sake of keeping up with the competition. Do you really need a bigger infotainment screen?
    I will assume that people buy pickup trucks to use and abuse. Looking at trucks these days are becoming overpriced appliances on wheels. Practicality and simplicity it’s getting to be non existent.

However our regulations are to strict for it to make it successful in North America. I test drove it and a few cons that I saw:
    1. Premium package no longer has power seat on passenger side.
    2. Power seats no longer have a tilt option. Felt I was sitting lower. Compared to my 19, a step backward.
    3. Backup cam is very low resolution. At this price point that is ridiculous.
    4. Weld joints on roof are unfinished. At least on some that i"ve seen. Looks like an opportunity for rust to develop in weld/crack.
    5. On Nissan forums complaints of dash rattles. Loose screws and other QC issues.
    6. Fully Direct injection engine means there could be issues down the road for carbon build up on motor. Time will tell.
    Overall not worth upgrading my 19 P4X. Bed capacity towing is not really improved. Low end torque is about the same. A loaded P4X literally cost 10K more then my loaded19 with premium package. At this point, waiting on the next gen ranger which should offer a more capable truck with the 2.7 eco which will offer a ton more capability and low end torque. Ford will not cut corners with their sync 5 infotainment and put low rez displays and take out power seat controls etc.. This is still a great upgrade for Nissan but is not future proofed to compete against the competitions next gens. Also Colorado will offer their 2.7 turbo which will also up the game for low end torque. Ford/GM will definitely offer v8 like power very soon.

    In TX the dealerships have very few trucks, the trims are picked and sent by Nissan and they're not that good at all. It you add the premium package you are forced to get the leather seats no red trim. 42k ProX with premium is going for 50K here due to shortage, no one appears to be selling at sticker.

    The Reason as to why Tacoma still has chosen to stick with rear drums vs rotors is because sand isn't good for rear rotors or brakes of any kind for that matter. When they did test rear rotors in sand there was a very loud screaming squeaking grinding taking place while the sand got trapped in the rotors. Therefore having rotors in the rear or any four by four is problematic. That is why they chose to keep the drums instead of going with the rotors, the drums protects the rear brakes from sand getting clogged up in the rear brakes which obviously makes it a better choice to stick with drums. Plus, You don't need rotors at the back for breaking power the rear drums are fine because most of your braking is done with the front rotors to begin with, that is why you don't have to replace your drum pads very often because only ten percent of the back brakes are required in a braking situation. so there you go. I watched a video on this that Tacoma had put out years ago but I cannot find it on the web anymore.
    This does look like a nice truck! but I think it cost way too much money. If I did reconsider I'd have to see how it does in a couple years before jumping the gun on that one, gotta wait till all the kinks are worked out.
    I have a 2014 Tacoma Sport crew cab with the v6 and I love the truck! we haven't had a problem at all with that truck, its super reliable truck. My only complaint is the drivers seat, its not powered. I wish it had electric seats with all the bells and whistles, thats only complaint I have with my Tacoma and that's because I have back issues.

    • @HiPlains1
      @HiPlains1 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I've heard on the interstate if you don't go too fast its better on MPG's. But still not great. Its still a tank and weighs even more then the outgoing truck. They decided to stay with a larger motor NA engine so its not going to be as good as Fords little eco. Back seat is no bigger. Truck is longer but that's all in the nose. IMO, Nissan needed to go with a smaller displacement engine using induction or offer a hybrid option. This truck needs more low end torque. It will soon be passed up with GM/Fords 2.7 turbos as far as low end torque. Not future proofed enough IMO.

Miss the sound system, cup holders that actually hold a real water bottle (nalgene) amongst other things.
